Professor Pfrehm refers to these 30 lessons as a “journey” rather than a “course” or “class.” That’s because learning a foreign language really is a journey. A journey has twists and turns. Milestones and mistakes. And most of all, journeys are full of surprises. Your biggest surprise with Learning German: A Journey through Language and Culture may be that the language is easier and more rewarding than you ever imagined.
This Basic German course is the next best thing to taking the first semester of German in a college or having private lessons.
Professor Pfrehm is passionate about the language and teaching. He does his best to make this course both entertaining and informative. He sets it up as a journey through the language and culture, and it is a journey worth taking. I actually was surprised by the amount of grammar and vocabulary he covered in 30 half hour lessons. Of course, to get maximum of this course you need to not only watch the video lectures but also do the exercises in the course textbook.
I'm sure that if you are diligent about this and follow professor's Pfrehm favorite advice "Übung macht den Meister", you can achieve very impressive results with this course. In my case, as I used the course to refresh my ever disappearing basic knowledge of German and was watching it while doing household chores (more listening than watching), I did not retain as much as I might have wished, but I still had lots of fun along the learning journey.
Whenever I put any of these types of Great Courses/Wondrium courses up as 'read', I'm including having both finished the actual lectures and also having read the accompanying coursebooks (I'd feel like I'm cheating if I only counted the former). In this one's case I also did the 'homework' for each chapter.
I've been a learner of German for a long time now, and there were quite a lot of handy details, tips and tricks that Professor Pfrehm showed through the course; I definitely feel my grasp of the language has improved.
