Akira Toriyama (鳥山明) was a Japanese manga artist and character designer. He first achieved mainstream recognition for creating the popular manga series Dr. Slump, before going on to create Dragon Ball (his most famous work) and acting as a character designer for several popular video games such as the Dragon Quest series, Chrono Trigger, and Blue Dragon. Toriyama came to be regarded as one of the most important authors in the history of manga with his works highly influential and popular, particularly Dragon Ball, which many manga artists cite as a source of inspiration.
He earned the 1981 Shogakukan Manga Award for best shōnen/shōjo manga with Dr. Slump, and it went on to sell over 35 million copies in Japan. It was adapted into a successful anime series, with a second anime created in 1997, 13 years after the manga ended.
His next series, Dragon Ball, would become one of the most popular and successful manga in the world. Having sold 260 million copies worldwide, it is one of the best-selling manga series of all time and is considered a key work in increasing manga circulation to its peak in the mid-1980s and mid-1990s. Overseas, Dragon Ball's anime adaptations have been more successful than the manga and are credited with boosting anime's popularity in the Western world. In 2019, Toriyama was decorated a Chevalier of the French Ordre des Arts et des Lettres for his contributions to the arts.
In October 2024, Toriyama was inducted into the Harvey Awards Hall of Fame.

The premise of this arc begins with a shift in protagonist: Son Goku sacrificed himself in the fight against Cell, so that Son Gohan may rise as Earth's new hero. As Roshi says on the cover for Chapter 421: "Dragon Ball isn't over yet! Sure, Goku's gone--- but that kid of his will take his place!" Little does Roshi know, Goku will snatch the limelight away from his son in due time, and indeed Goku makes an appearance six chapters into the story, announcing he will be able to come back to Earth for 24 hours so he might participate in the newest Tenkaichi Budokai.

This volume is strange because nothing of significant consequence really happens, compared to the previous several arcs. While this is labeled part of the Majin Boo Arc, the volume ends before we see anyone related to Boo, any sort of Majin or Kaioshin or anything. The first few chapters have a bit of a "slice-of-life" feel with a return to Toriyama's gag manga days in Dr. Slump. Gohan is trying to live the life of a regular sixteen-year-old, going to school in the city while occasionally giving in to his Saiyan blood's urge for battle by beating the shit out of bank robbers and things. Using his Super Saiyan form as a "disguise," Gohan establishes a name for himself as a local hero, but he wants to keep some degree of anonymity, so he has Bulma give him a henshin watch to transform him into the costumed superhero Great Saiyaman. Unfortunately, Gohan's finally inherited his father's idiot genes, so he forgets to disguise his voice and easily falls for Videl's simple detective work to bust the Saiyaman's secret identity. Videl is the daughter of Mr. Satan, the weakling who fooled the world into thinking he defeated Cell. Intrigued by Gohan's big dick Saiyan chad energy, Videl asks him to teach her ki control and bukujutsu. Gohan's younger brother, Goten, conceived in the days before the Cell Game, also needs to learn how to fly (despite being able to easily go Super Saiyan already), so the three train together for the upcoming Tenkaichi Budokai, the first our heroes have joined in ages. Meanwhile, Vegeta and Trunks train together, while the still-dead Goku meditates in the afterlife to build his strength before the tournament, when Baba will let him walk the mortal world for 24 hours (just as Grandpa Gohan did ages ago).

Readers familiar with the series will know that the tournament takes a turn when Spopovich and Yamu show up and start fucking everyone up with the evil power granted by Babidi, which will ultimately lead to the rebirth of Majin Boo, an ancient evil that has been slumbering for centuries. But none of this is touched upon in this volume, and the only hint at bigger goings-on would come from the reader's memory of the Great Ape attack in the first tournament arc, or the rise of Piccolo Daimaou immediately after the second. This volume is mostly a comedy, at least until the Trunks versus Goten battle from the Youth Division of the Budokai, which returns to the energy of earlier Goku versus Kuririn or Tenshinhan fights.

I know a lot of people shit on the Boo Arc for being silly, but I think it's also true those same people just don't like pre-Raditz Dragon Ball (and the same people divide the story by the two anime adaptations, rather than seeing it as a singular manga). It's also true these chucklefucks don't know shit about Dr. Slump, so don't realize Toriyama has always been a funny dude, and might enjoy turning his new manga back into the comedy it started as, when it was a Journey to the West parody. While I do personally like Toriyama's humor, and so enjoy the gag bits in this volume, it's possibly a bigger "problem" that this volume doesn't end up being too indicative of the rest of the series. The slice-of-life element makes it feel like Toriyama had a vague plan on going a dozen or so volumes focused on lower stakes centered around Gohan, or otherwise steadily escalating back up to a Cell-tier threat after the "reset" Gohan's teen years represent. In theory, Dragon Ball after Cell could have focused on Gohan, Videl, maybe Goten, maybe Trunks, maybe even Piccolo hanging out and going on adventures without the fate of the universe always at stake. Maybe Boo could come in later, maybe the "worst" threat could just be on the level of the Red Ribbon Army or something, I don't know. But Japanese kids wanted more Goku, so Gohan gets kicked out of the manga's focus so Goku could be the hero again. It's possible Toriyama was upset at fan/editor demand, hence why Super Saiyan 3 looks so silly, or why Gohan is made even sillier when he fails to catch the Potara earring in the fight against Super Boo. I don't know, man. But I do feel it's maybe appropriate to consider this chunk of the manga as its own thing, and not strictly part of the Boo Arc overall.

****

*Videl with pigtails is most definitely Toriyama's cutest female design. I'd like to think Spopovich beats the shit out of her for cutting her hair....
*the narration notes Son Gohan's age as sixteen, and seven years have passed since Cell's defeat, so the so-called "Teen" Gohan who went SS2 was actually nine-years-old....
*the hair and eye color changes of the Super Saiyan form allow Gohan to kick robber ass in "disguise"
*Erasa in Gohan's school is oddly mistranslated as "Eliza" in the translation I was reading, which is silly because Sharpner's name isn't altered....
*the gym teacher looks like Freddie Mercury
*Sharpner's goofy face when he accidentally hits Gohan with the baseball looks like Toriyama is really trying to extract some gag energy from his Dr. Slump days
*Great Saiyaman as a Kamen Rider parody to complement the Sentai parody of Ginyu and his buddies. Oddly, Gohan doesn't seem to realize he's mimicking the wacky poses of the Ginyu Tokusentai... or maybe he's just repressed the memories?
*Bulma apparently smokes cigarettes now(?)
*Vegeta, to Gohan: "Maybe the world is peaceful now, but if you overlook your training you will get rusty." Which is exactly what happens in GT and most of Super
*Goten's Chinese style clothing is similar to what he wears in Super, which is neat because I'm so used to the Turtle style gi that I forgot he ever wore anything else.
*Chi-chi pulls all her hair in back of her head, rather than having locks hang in front of her ears as before. This makes her look the same as what I know from Super, and unfortunately makes her less cute to me.
*Goten somehow has a spot of matted hair like his father. As with Grandpa Bardock, it's nonsense; I'm pretty sure Kid Goku was seen with wilder hair before he bumped his head and lost his Saiyan programming, with the matted section of hair reflecting the spot where he fell. Unless that's "headcanon"?
*Gohan, about his hero name: "That... you'll find out next chapter!" and "I'll tell you, as promised." Fourth-wall-breaking gag humor, as if Toriyama was very dedicated to having more silliness in Dragon Ball moving forward.
*Saiyaman's bandana is orange in the colored manga, rather than the white seen in the anime
*No. 18 has her blue shirt and white pants, of which I have a Banpresto "Glitter & Glamours" figure, and of which there is a MegaHouse "Dragon Ball Gals" figure. The purpose of my chronicling 18's outfits is to figure out when they appear versus the DB Gals figure releases, by the way. But I don't even own any of their 18s....
*Gohan, about his hero suit: "What?! Even you, Piccolo? It looks lame to you, too?" Poor kid must have thought Piccolo would share his fashion sense, since he always wore demon clothes when he fought as a child.
*Chi-chi: "Oh... well, you can just go to school later!" Chi-chi actually allows fighting now that it could provide money?
*Goten's undershirt for his gi is black in the Full Color version, rather than the blue of the anime. This makes it more unique than his father's gi (beyond just having longer sleeves). Gohan has orange wristbands and socks and stuff for his new demon gi, which is also different from his "classic" style.
*Goten can easily go Super Saiyan, perhaps because his father conceived him in the week between "completing" the SS form and starting the Cell Game
*Chi-chi trained Goten a wee bit, meaning she's still something of a martial artist beyond her gag punches
*Gohan, to Goten: "What? You're a Super Saiyan but you can't fly?" Bukujutsu is still a technique that must be learned as part of ki control, whereas Super Saiyan... isn't.
*Chi-chi, to Videl: "Are you sure you aren't here to date my son?," and later, "But don't you dare try to seduce my son to reward him!"
*Gohan, Goten, and Videl lined up on the cover to Chapter 428, as if they're meant to establish themselves as the new protagonists
*Videl is fuckin' smol compared to CHADhan, who often appears to be roughly twice her size. Not too bizarre, considering Goku doubled his own size back in his third tournament.
*Videl seems to use the idea of training to get closer to Gohan's Super Saiyan monkey dick
**Videl: "You like girls with... short hair?"
**"I'll keep training with you until I can fly like him!," using Goten's example as an excuse to sniff around Gohan's balls
*Vegeta: "Is there a sale on Super Saiyans going on or what?"
*cover for Chapter 430 is pretty "iconic," with Goku and Great Saiyaman and the other tournament participants
*Yamcha: "Are you crazy? I'll be an embarrassment..." Yamcha is officially a member of the sidelines, alongside Oolong, Roshi, and the wives.
*everyone's tearful reunion with Goku kinda got to me a bit....
*Trunks: "Anyone under 15 can't fight adults?" Goku would not be able to participate in the real tournament if these rules applied to his first two Budokai appearances. I can't remember perfectly, but he may have been too young in his third tournament as well. Such are the great changes between the early days of the Dragon Ball world versus the newer world that's moved on without the Dragon Team while they've been facing galactic-level threats.
*there's enough attention to detail paid that Goten is still seen hiding behind Saiyaman's cape to peak on his father when everyone starts walking toward the preliminary setting
*No. 18 has the black shirt with white striped sleeves and jeans, which is her final costume for the MegaHouse figures
*Kuririn and 18 seem to be merely living together with their daughter at Kame House, meaning they aren't married, just as was true for Bulma and Vegeta earlier. Now I'm confused as to whether Goku and Chi-chi are actually married, as IIRC their wedding was non-canon "filler" in the anime....
*Kuririn: "I feel bad for people who don't know how strong we are. The people who can really fight here are only our friends."
*Piccolo: "This is my face's normal color." The tourney staff seem to have forgotten they used to have a fucking pterodactyl man fight in their tournaments....
*Announcer-san recognizing Goku, Kuririn, and Piccolo, meaning at least someone recalls the glory days, when it wasn't just weak humans tussling
**"To be honest, the Tenkaichi Budokai was no fun without you!! Low intensity fights, you know..." Which is, of course, how Mr. Satan was able to become famous.
**to Piccolo: "Oh, and please don't destroy the ring this time."
*after 18 scores too high on the punching machine, everyone else just casually bops it to achieve "normal" enough scores (still always shitting all over Satan's score)
*Kuririn: "The Budokai became too fancy."
*Goten pushing off the ground after his high-speed dash toward Trunks was a good example of combining the higher power-levels of present-day characters with the fight choreography of pre-Raditz battles
*everyone fucks off before the match between Trunks and Satan, with only Gohan forced to stay for a sniff of Videl's privates, since he has to pretend to be a normal person
*Trunks: "What was that?! He must have gone out of his way to look bad. After all, he's the world champion..."
*Satan's face after Trunks "lightly" hits him is hilarious

****

Using my "slice-of-life" tag because this part of the manga lacks "stakes" entirely; that is, no Majin have yet been introduced, and the Budokai looks like it's just a fun way to celebrate Son Goku's brief return, and/or a means for Gohan to crush some puss. And much of the volume is just Gohan goofing off as Great Saiyaman anyway.
