I knew Camp Shadow Lake held secrets. What I didn’t know was how deep those secrets ran.
My first few weeks at Camp Shadow Lake changed my life. Not only did I meet the guy of my dreams in Levi Kass, but I found my soul-sister in True King. Oh, did I mention there’s this whole other world where vampires are real, witches exist, and a secret society runs everything behind the scenes?
Yeah, it’s been a wild few weeks.
The man behind the curtain is the rich and sophisticated vampire Count Warren Thornberry, who pulls strings like an all-powerful puppeteer. For some reason, he desires me. And Warren is used to getting what he wants.
But he can’t have me. I’m dedicated to Levi, who has vowed to track down my father’s killer and end him. As Levi heads to the mountains to fulfill his promise, Warren makes his move. While I battle against his magnetic pull, I must also fight to save my friendship with True, who seems to be drifting away before my very eyes.
My attraction to Levi is my one and only constant at Camp Shadow Lake, but will even that be broken?
Wendi Wilson is a mother to two rambunctious boys, a fat black cat, two ferrets, and a pup named Izzy. She spends her time watching her boys play baseball and football, volunteering at school, reading and writing.
She enjoys reading YA paranormal romance, NA romance, and dystopian novels. Her first book, Shadowed Strength, is the culmination of 20+ years of work, a dream finally realized.
Piper’s first four weeks at Camp Shadow Lake have changed her life. Not only has she discovered the existence of vampires and witches but that a secret society run by an ancient vampire, Count Warren Thornberry, is designed to keep vampires in line. Piper has mostly recovered from her near death ordeal at the hands of Sarah and her people. Most importantly she feels she’s one step closer to solving her father’s murder. Her relationship with Levi Kass is blossoming and she’s found her soul sister in True King. When news suddenly comes out of the blue that her best friend Coco is dead, Piper is devastated.
While attending Coco’s funeral, Piper is approached by an odd job man who claims her father’s body was missing from his coffin prior to his funeral.
“I mean, they buried an empty box. Someone took the body. If I had to guess, I’d say it was someone who was worried that the evidence the police didn’t find, may someday be revealed. They came at night. Two men. They took the body, and the mortician was so upset he said, ‘It’s a closed casket, they won’t know,’ and put sandbags in it instead. I heard one word as they snuck off - Siskiyou.”
An enraged Piper realises that not only was her father murdered by rogue vampires, but his body was stolen and taken to their hideout in the Siskiyou Mountains. She now wants revenge. Warren Thornberry promises to find those responsible and later when one of his scouts finds her father’s wedding band, Levi and a few of Warren’s men, set out to find their nest.
Before he leaves, Levi warns Piper about Warren and his obvious interest in her. Despite her promise to be careful, Piper accepts Warren’s offer to train her in defence techniques - a decision that Warren uses to pursue her relentlessly. The question is, can he be trusted? Meanwhile the arrival of a new vamp counsellor in the camp and True’s odd behaviour since she started dating him, leaves Piper’s with a sense of foreboding..
The Count is the second instalment of the Shadow Lake Vampire Society series which picks up shortly after the events of the first book. Both authors have once again concocted a tense, suspense filled plot, full of excitement and intrigue. Piper has come along way from the haunted protagonist suffering from PTSD following the death of her father of the first book. We see a stronger, assertive and more fearless Piper (or ‘Bad Ass Piper’ as she refers to herself 😉) who wants justice for her father and refuses to be a victim. Several revelations come to light in this instalment regarding not only Piper’s father, but about her visions and abilities and what she truly is. I had an inkling about Piper’s father in the previous instalment which only got stronger in this book. By the time my suspicions were confirmed I squealed, “I knew it!”
The world building has been interesting throughout both books. On the one hand we have vampires such as Dean Charles Purty and his fellow counsellors who want to peacefully coexist with humans. On the other we have the feral rogue vampires who hide out in the Siskiyou mountains and prey on humans. In the middle of this we have the rather shady Shadow Lake Vampire Society headed by Warren Thornberry who maintains and enforces the peace between both groups.
This was an exciting continuation of the series and judging from the jaw dropping cliffhanger, the authors have paved the way nicely for the next exciting instalment.
Ideal for fans of urban fantasy/paranormal romance, supernatural mystery, secret societies, vampires, murder, betrayal, troubled teens, summer camps etc
Book two picks up without missing a beat. From the very first page until the end you become involved in the mystery surrounding the camp, and wonder exactly what is going on. What exactly do they want, who can Piper really trust? And what exactly do they want with her? What is going on with True and Levi?
While I thought the first book was just good, I liked this one much better. There were a lot of plot points that took me by surprise. I loved how it all progressed. My concern is that there is a possible trigger, in the form of a mild sexual assault scene, that should be noted. The person being assaulted is unconscious and the scene is not graphic but it did take me by surprise.
In book 2 we are fully immersed in death and despair that continues to find amd surround Piper.
Now add in a sexy Count "the number one thing I knew for certain was that he'd do and say anything to get what he wanted. And, apparently, what he wanted was me."
Wendi L Wilson continues with her suspense and romantic story surrounding Piper, building on the story and grabbing and digging her fangs into the reader even more to keep us needing to know the story behind Shadow Lake.
As with book 1, this book also is a cliffhanger but I am still hooked on series wanting more.
The Shadow Lake Camp gang are back and things get even better in Book 2. Piper is still in shock over the death of Coco, and the book starts with the Funeral for her dearest friend. This is obviously hard for Piper, after the strange and mysterious death of her Father over a year ago. Once the funeral is over, Piper, along with True, head back to Shadow Lake, where there are some new Counsellors (Vamps of course), but slightly nicer ones than the previous ones who thought compelling children and drinking their blood was an acceptable past time, let alone torturing the other Counsellors. There is also a new Camp Cook, Zelda, and she tells Piper she is not only a Vamp, but used to be a Witch, and she can see it in Piper to. This opens up the obvious storylines, the visions etc, and leads to some other things that I will let you read about, but it makes for an awesome Part 2. Multiple things happen in this book, all of them making for a fantastic read full of intrigue, romance, lots of fun, bits of action, and a story that you will not be able to put down for a second! For starters, True gets her own Vamp boyfriend, one of the replacement Counsellors, a guy called Xander. Piper immediately gets a bad vibe from him, even more so when she learns that he has come directly from Warren’s Estate. After her series of attacks in book 1 by other Vamps, Warren offers to start training Piper in self-defence, much to Levi’s horror and disgust, but eventually he does agree to it. However, Warren takes every opportunity to push boundaries, and it is quickly clear that he wants Piper, in every sense of the word, and does everything possible to push Levi’s buttons, as well as pushing Pipers. This is a really powerful storyline, one with lots of raw emotion, sexual tension, but also some really intriguing and intellectual parts as Piper must overcome one of the most powerful Vampires on the continent. It makes for some gripping and enthralling reading, and you seriously just get lost in the book, totally absorbed, having to know what is going to happen next. In the middle of all of this, Levi and a couple of others are sent to go and track down a ‘Wild Vamp’, who lives in the Mountains, they take refuge there, and this Vamp is responsible for the death of Piper’s Father. Again, this is another aspect of the book that is totally compelling and engaging, with a very clever and creative storyline. A lot of thought and effort has gone into the world-building surrounding the background of the Mountain Vamps, as well as ‘The Society’, ‘The Council’, and all the interwoven connections, and this shows as you read the book, and find all these fascinating things that just keep drawing you further into the story. With any Urban Fantasy, you need a storyline that is going to keep you engaged, excited and interested, and this has it in spades. There are a lot of other storylines that happen in this book, but I will let you read about them, I don’t want to give too much away. Needless to say, the Authors have packed a huge amount into this book, making it a sensational and exciting read. Piper’s character continues to grow in this book, which is something I always love about a good series. Piper not only goes to develop some skills with Warren as mentioned, but she also discovers several other things (I’ll let you read about them so no spoilers), about herself, adding to the story, but giving her character a whole new depth. Piper has a lot of potential as a character, and I really hope that they continue to grow aspects of her in the following parts. I have to say, this is one of those books that I finished and was really disappointed, as I didn’t have the next part, and it was so good, and had such a good ending!!! This book had one of the best endings, one you really don’t see coming (at least until the final few pages), as there are so many ‘moves’ and ‘counter-moves’. At times, it is like a complex game of chess, as each side tries to outmaneuver the other – but it makes for such an exceptional and fun read. If you read the first book, you will love this one, and if you like anything Urban Fantasy, you will Love this series, it is Absolutely Brilliant – get on board now to what is going to be the Urban Fantasy Series of the Year 2020!!
I have mixed feelings about this book cover. There is something odd about the female on the cover, around her head and neck and it does kind of spoil the cover a little. Having said that it didn’t bother me enough to not want to read the book. I loved the cover for bk1, and really enjoyed reading the book, so naturally I was eager to read bk2. If this book cover was by authors I hadn’t read before, would I have picked the book up from a bookstore shelf? The totally honest answer is, I aren’t sure I would have. Though I don’t pin everything on a cover, so I’d like to think I would have still picked it up and read the blurb etc.
The book puts you straight back into the plot where bk1 ended with Piper attending the funeral of her best friend Coco, who officially died in a car crash. Piper is going through a whole range of emotions, from the obvious grief and sadness, to remorse and guilt thinking perhaps if she had kept in better contact with Coco that she wouldn’t have died. Levi Kass, vampire counsellor is there to hold her hand and attend the funeral along with her mother to help her through the funeral. Piper’s mother has been compelled to forget all that happened when she visited her daughter at camp at the hands of the vampires Sarah, & Lars. Levi gets a call saying that Warren Thornberry, the head of the Shadow Lake Vampire Society has a lead on the vampire responsible for murdering Piper’s father. After a lot of persuading Piper agrees to stay home for a couple of weeks to rest, and grieve for her best friend before returning to camp to work.
When Piper does return to the Camp there have been a lot of staff changes. Alexander Banks is one of the newbies and it seems has definitely made an impression on True, the only other human counsellor at camp. In fact, as the book goes on it seems that True has completely changed, the once fun, gossipy, friendly counsellor who spent lots of time with Piper now only has time for Xander. Even the campers are subjected to a new grumpy, bad tempered, bossy True. Is True’s complete change of character down to being loved up with Xander or is there more to it than meets the eye? Piper also wonders if she is maybe a little jealous of True & Xander’s relationship as her own boyfriend, Levi is off in the mountains with two of Warren Thornberry’s men searching for her father’s killers.
Warren Thornberry is putting more pressure on Piper, he enjoys provoking Levi by training her in self defence, inviting her to parties on his yacht or to his home. He seems to believe that he can win over Piper and take her away from her current boyfriend Levi. Warren also keeps raising the subject of Piper being turned into a vampire too. Levi warns Piper to be wary of Warren but she just seems to see the innocent helpful side of the things he is doing and tells Levi he could never come between them as it his him she cares about.
I don’t really want to give away anymore of the story as it would be revealing things that would spoil the flow of the book for readers. I will say the subject of witches that was mentioned in bk1 The Vision is brought up again and as one of the new Camp Shadow Lake staff is a Vampire & was a Witch before being turned into a vampire, things in the “witchy” department do progress a little more in this book. We also learn more about the vampires living in the mountains, as well as some vampire history and how Warren formed the Vampire Society.
My immediate thoughts upon finishing the book were, I enjoyed reading the book, though not as much as book 1. It also seems there will be even more action to come in book 3. Will the camp continue? How will the revelation at the end of the book affect the coming war? Will Piper & True develop their witch powers more? Will either or both of them become vampires? So much more to come.....
To sum up I slipped straight back into the world this book is set in. I have to say I am kind of enjoying disliking the “bad vampires” too! As well as looking forward to what happens between Piper & Levi and what their future will look like, especially wondering if and how the whopper of a cliff hanger at the end of this book will affect things.
Wendi.L.Wilson & Katie French once again show their abilities to create Intense and startling effects and strong reactions from you as we once again as we seamlessly re-connect with these characters and some new ones in bk.2. We find a storyline that is filled with deception, loss, sadness and a growing love that escalates as the pages zip by your eyes. Once again, involving Piper as she becomes the centre of being mentally and emotionally distorted with so many threads being rotated and moved into different positions in her life, All because of one particular character. Meanwhile having to deal with so many of her campers getting into mischief plus unfortunately her Co-worker. All this within weeks of her rock Levi not around to support her. Levi returns with the news she has been waiting for for over a year, you would expect things to return to normal ! But could this be the end for both of them? Don’t forget we are dealing with Vampires here, a species that shouldn’t even be real !! They hold their own kind of magic and can lie and cheat better than mortal men. Finding out the truth of these secrets will be shocking in bk.2. Leaving us with shocking revelations in the cliffhanger, I was left with an internal scream of nooooo!! When I realised it was the last sentence......I’m loving this series !!!
I was lucky enough to get an advanced readers copy of this book, and with perfect timing, as I'd finished the first one just a few days earlier and wanted to know how the story would progress.
In this book, we follow Piper through her life as a counselor at shadow lake camp, her love interest is following up on a lead on her father's killers and during her wait for him she has her own issues to deal with as her best friend at camp has started acting a bit off. The ensuing events will have you entertained throughout the book as Piper discovers new things about herself and her abilities.
I find I like the main character more and more, her journey to discover who she is and how strong she really can be is inspiring and reminds you there is hope to get back from the dark depths of your own mind where Piper was when we met her in the first book. The book ends with a few surprising revelations which I can't wait to figure out how will impact Piper later.
Would I read it again? Definitely, if I ever end up getting through the current backlog of reading material that I have.
I can't believe Piper couldn't figure some of this out herself. Especially, that True was being compelled! She can't be stupid. All the strange things that keep happening to her the visions, knowing where people are, fighting reflexes to knowing what move you are going to do next. Hello you're a witch! Also it was pretty ridiculous for her not to believe she could not be compelled by a vampire. They only warned her now many times. I do enjoy the characters though. Loved the vampires this book except Xander. I would have thought when a certain something came up missing Piper would have jumped to the vampire conclusion. Especially after Levi Sanders if he had a funeral. I can't believe she fell for the story True have her about what happened that night. I am really curious to see if her family member likes her boyfriend. And is Warren going to get away in the next book of be killed? I really love the dean, he's like the fatherly type some kids never get!
I received an ARC copy of this book for an honest review. I'm absolutely loving this series of book's, they just keep getting better. There are secrets revealed and a love triangle between the wonderful Levi and Warren who are both wanting the affections of our heroine Piper. But she only has eye's for one man, and we all know who that is, but Warren isn't used to hearing the word No and is used to getting what he wants. And then there's True her best friend going through some action of her own. I'd definitely recommend this series and Wendi Wilson as an author as she's brilliant and makes reading a joy 💕💕🥰🥰😍✨✨
Angst Filled, Friends Lost And Others Found!!😔😢💔🙏💕 3.5 Stars 🌟 (Read using Kindle Unlimited) Shadow Lake Vampire Society Book Two: The Count
This one was quite dark throughout, it didn't have any of the light hearted scenes that made the storyline so much more appealing in book #1. I missed the light with all of the dark. Someone tries to isolate Piper from all of the others in this one. She really starts to doubt herself, her worth & importance!💔 Warren, The Society leader, takes her under his wing to train her!🙏
Still enjoyable but it went too formulaic for me in this book. It all felt so obvious.😕 Hopefully book #3 will see it back on track!🍀
Wow, so much happened with Piper in Book two! So much was revealed! Sadness, anger, crazy vampires, and then happiness, enlightenment! Just when Piper thinks she's training to protect herself from rogue vampires she learns the truth and gets some intense surprises. Then she learns so much more about herself and what she's able to do. Only to then have a giant surprise drop in to leave us all hanging with our mouths open! Wendi Wilson, love, love, love your writing, and whatever is going on in your brain to create this world keep doing it!
Wow. Just wow. Wendi Wilson and Katie French have outdone themselves in Shadow Lake Vampire Society: The Count, book 2 in the Shadow Lake Vampire Society series. I absolutely loved it, maybe even more than first book. Everything about this book was perfect. The pace, the twist and turns, the downright jaw dropping moments—the ending. Holy Hells Bells that ending. My jaw is still on the floor. I need more, and I need it now. Well done ladies, well done.
Any scene where Bella and Edward kissed was exactly the same in this book. The "I trust you, you won't hurt me" to the "I'm not good, I've done horrible things" and more are Twilight replayed. These books are good but seem a little bit ripped off from Twilight. I'm on to book 3, I guess I'll run into the Salvatore brothers or Elana.
Another good read! I think it would be a toss up which book had more action; this one or book two but both tell an intriguing story that will keep you on the edge of your seat! I highly recommend this whole series. Both are excellent reads!
4 Stars for The Count by Wendi L Wilson and Katie French. This is book two in the Shadow Lake Vampire Society series. Levi and Piper have me hooked. Now here comes the Count. I will say there are parts in this book that could be triggers for some. Just be warned. This book had everything I love , twists, turns, steam, and drama. I am enjoying this trilogy so much. I am ready for book three.
Piper is returning to Shadow Lake as a counselor after going home to grieve for her best friend. She is aware that the camp is run, and mostly staffed, by vampires. The dean is a vamp too, but only consumes animal blood. However, this time a very powerful vamp has taken an interest in Piper. She wants no part of it. A confrontation is coming. Can Piper and her friends win?
but way too short. I read this in an hour. I really wish it had been just a little longer. The story is great. The characters are well written. Just a little longer please.
Amazing story this author had wrote!love the characters she's created. The mysterious turns and lots of action.looking forward to the next chapter in this series.Check this author's books out!!!
Definitely a good continuation. The characters are growing and Piper is coming into her own. Not a fan of the cussing but I have been largely ignoring it. Overall a good book 2 and i can't wait to finish the story.
Great character development and the story keeps getting better and better. I loved the two twists towards the end and can’t wait to start book 3. Piper and True are so awesome and I am so excited to see how this all ends.
I love this series! There are lots of twists and turns, surprises, action, and your stay in the trope but deviate just enough to make it interesting. If you love The Vampire Diaries or Twilight you'll love this series.
Oh my. I think this one was even better than the first. Wendi and Katie have done it again! They make an amazing writing team. That ending though! I can't wait for more.
Such a roller coaster ride, I loved it. So intense at parts. A great YA novel that has something for everyone! I’ve pre ordered the last book and can’t wait to read it.
