Die Stille der Steine - Warschau im November 1944

Rate this book

An amazing book! Back in November 1944 it was forbidden under penalty of death to set foot on Warsaw, a ghost town at that time. But a group of German soldiers got permission to go there, and one of them, Joe J Heydecker, took pictures of the wrecked town. Those pictures are collected in this book. They are the only photos that exist of Warsaw during that time. In addition to the photos, you also get a very personal view into people's experiences during the Warsaw Uprising, e.g. through diary entries, poems, memories etc. There is something very depressing about this book but I still want to open it to read it or to look at the photos. A very special read! Atmospheric, unique, important - highly recommended.
