What does sex lube, a murder, and a secret guild of women have in common?
Kit Maguire is the link. That, and her discovery that the purple-willy-shaped tube of lube is fantastic for styling her wayward hair. A national disaster means the lube is in short supply and the hunt is on to find more before Kit’s curls turn to frizz. The Women with Curls guild is desperate for a demonstration but Kit isn’t keen on sharing what little she has left.
When the handsome Jackson Delaney arrests her for the murder of her boss, Kit is faced with life in prison and the threat of a permanent ponytail. It’s up to her flat mates to discover who really killed the lovely Mr Roy, but can the two vicars and an absent-minded scientist find the key to Kit’s innocence before it’s too late?

The queen of curly hair herself has called it, 'Hairlarious.'
Married and bringing up four children during her twenties and thirties, K T Bowes reserved her storytelling for them.
She emigrated to New Zealand in 2006 with her family on a one way ticket. They arrived with just one suitcase each. The international bestselling Hana Du Rose Mysteries began shortly afterwards, hammered out on an old laptop used for Skyping family back home.
Since then, she has published more than twenty five books ranging from women's literature through teen series, to a fantasy trilogy.
The author has given interviews to That's Life Magazine and the BBC during her writing career. Each of her first in series novels are free to readers on all digital platforms.
K T Bowes has a passion for folk art and renovating wooden furniture. Her work as an archivist often appears within story lines. After two significant falls, she gave up horse riding but often has a guest horse or two in the paddock. She lives above the city of Hamilton, close to the Waikato River and the Hakarimata Ranges. Many of her novels are based in New Zealand, but some transport the reader back to England and the Midlands where she grew up.
With the great reviews I was totally prepared to be laughing and loving this book. Yeah, no. Kit uses lube for hair gel and puts in on in the shower and then doesn’t rinse out the tub so her roommate slips and has a cut under his eye? far fetched. One minute Kit is hanging out with her step-sister and they are laughing and having a great time. The next minute the step sister is being rude and snotty and Kit thinks about how mean she’s been in the past. Finally Kit is at a group meeting for people with curly hair and they are making hair gel out of flax seed. One woman says she has a weak stomach when they describe the consistency of the gel as snot but does they leader stop saying snot? No. Um, bodily function jokes are kind of grade school don’t you think?
Kit has problems, not the least is she needs a lot of particular sex lube to share with her hair club. And in the meantime her boss is killed. And a former boss has a heart attack. And she's arrested. And has an unexpected roommate added to the existing ones. this book was a fun read centering on what women of co!or must do to care for their hair. But it also has a mystery element and some basic life questions. Writing isn't as strong as I would like but the story is fun and compelling.
I really had fun reading this. Not wanting to give away the plot of the story....I will say with vigor...I love my naturally straight hair. Kit, her flat mates and the curly hair club women kept my funny bone on edge. Mixing all the humor and drama together impressed me with the author's unique imagination of using hair care as an idea for a mystery. Now I must get book two!
Very well written, great plotting and a seriously hilarious lead. As a fellow ginger but without the curly hair. But my mom had it and she spent hours and hours getting hers to react like normal hair, which curly ginger hair is most definitely not. The book brought back fond memories.
This was far too juvenile and slapstick for my tastes. Kit was annoyingly hair-obsessed and a bit spineless; every other character I remember was unlikable (with the exception of Raki and the new curate, Jerry). The mystery was underdeveloped, and the solution was just fallen into. I suspect tweens might like this.
I found this book disappointing! Maybe there are clubs out there for people with curly hair but who knew the members could be so radical? I was surprised that the elders of a church would accept their vicar sharing a house with an unmarried woman! Though I am not a prude the constant reference to sexual lubricant and the rather silly name for it was rather off putting. This book might appeal to others but not to me.
This book was so funny it had me literally laughing out loud, embarrassingly so. Luckily I was home, so just my family witnessed it. I am ready for the next book in the series!
Not quite my cup of tea. Was an ok read. But a bit juvenile. I could recommend for a much younger readers. Not really an adult type book. The supposed humor was just plain silly. A nice read for a young teen.
Loved this book. Kit and her flat mates are great characters. Kit is trying to find a large number of bottles of lube to give out to other women with curly hair while trying to prove her innocence in the death of her boss. Laughs throughout this read.
So, the Curly Girl Method is a real thing. I am not sure I want to devote so much time to my hair but there are a couple of ideas worth trying. Understanding the drama of curly hair is probably needed to enjoy this book. Some of it is a little over the top, but I found it quite amusing.
What an enjoyable read. This old man reading a romantic mystery. 🤔 But then Ms. Bowes’ books are always a joy even when they are more serious than DEAD STRAIGHT. That is if there is anything more serious than a murder. This book has it all; a little romance (one relationship gone bad and maybe the start of a new one), murder, mystery, twists and turns, and some red herrings - did they or didn’t they murder poor Mr. Roy. Also some surprises.
Some really funny snippets in here that made me laugh out loud. Who knew having curly hair could lead to such an interesting life and to such trouble. The drama certainly seems to happen around Kit, with an ex turning up on the scene after his father dies, unwelcome attention from a colleague and sharing a flat with two hunky Vicars.
