I wake up in a white room, strapped to a chair. They are watching me from behind a glass wall. I did something terrible, they say. And they want to understand how an Omega was capable of such ferocity.
But the problem is… I can’t remember anything. Not even my own name. The things they put me through… They won’t help me remember. I close my heart, block them out, and they hate me for it. I hate them, too. And this shared hatred is what will bring us together.
Author's Note: This book contains dark themes and possible triggers. It's intended for mature audiences only. Read it at your own risk.
Cara Wylde loves to write about strong, feisty women and their hot Alphas who will do anything to make them happy. Her books are filled with romance and just a dash of mystery, suspense, and that eerie atmosphere she fell in love with reading too many gothic novels. With a master's degree in Comparative Literature, she can't help but play with tropes and themes from various genres, trying to come up with fresh perspectives on the paranormal characters her readers love so much. Vampires, shape-shifters, demons, witches... Cara will always make sure they get their own twists.
When she's not writing, Cara is reading, planning her next story, or daydreaming. Her idea of pure heaven is a day filled with nothing but her laptop, a huge coffee pot, relaxing music, and a new, exciting project.
I found this series on why-choose.com and since it had a trigger flag but no details, I thought starting with the prequel would be best.
The premise and writing are great. But I cannot get into SA by the love interests. The future harem are awful and vile in this short. I can't imagine they get better in the duet.
There's just no redemption for characters who assault the fmc like this. Some readers like it, but it's not for me.
The book was only a preview. What they did to her was wrong on so many levels. You have no idea what happened for real. I hsve to think about reading the actual book.
This is a prequel to the Dark Moon Prison series which I have not read and most likely will not read.
I read this prequel purely as a dark erotica mini-novella standalone and NOT as a romance (in general, I prefer my romance to have dark themes or dark storylines, without the actual romance itself being dark), and based on what it was - it was excellent.
The heroine may be an omega but she's certainly not weak. She's tough, smart and capable - and thankfully, not rendered stupid by her 'betraying body'.
The dub-con scenes were well-written. Hot sex and love/romance don't always go hand in hand, and Wylde captured this feeling accurately. I felt a very real sense of antagonism between the Alphas and Wisteria - their ABO natures may have drawn them together, but they don't like each other. At least, not yet.
The best part though? She doesn't submit to them. There is no 'surrender', even though there's sexual release. There's no unnecessary feelings of attachment towards the Alphas who've treated her so abominably. Her body may be compromised, but her mind and her heart are still her own. An all too rare occurrence in modern romances!
This is the prequel to the series. A little teaser as if you would say. And it is just banging great! Loved it and book one that I read so far. Will have to hop on book two and if there are any more to catch myself right up on. Do not read if you have "certain" triggers, because this book is definitely dark and will have dark themes throughout it. She can't remember her name or why they keep asking her why did she killed her pack. ... she just can't remember anything. But it seems they will get it out of her one way or another...
Penumbra – Dark Moon Prison prequel – Cara Wylde I hadn’t read this author before and I was not sure what this prequel was going to be. Can I just say it’s a pretty brutal and trigger laiden. The Omega is subjected to appalling treatment by the Alphas and is hugely confused about her circumstances throughout this short read. I expect the series will be an angsty enemies to lovers type of read with a hefty dose of brutal thrown in. This book has glimpses of the steamy that could transpire in the future - enough to make this an 18+ read. Three stars.
Super super short novella free on Amazon kindle! This was pretty much spice with absolutely no backstory since our mc had amnesia. Not always a bad thing but I usually prefer a short introduction to the characters (although I’m pretty sure this is part of a series it can be read standalone). Also when Cara Wylde says dark romance she means DARK, I’d highly recommend checking for triggers on this one. Spice rating: 7/10🌶
This novella immediately draws you in and will not let you go. It is an interesting concept and I cannot wait to see where the next one goes. This werewolf story will make you think about what could possibly happen next to the main female character.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
She doesn't remember anything. Not her name, where she lived, nothing. Yet they want her to confess to murdering her pack. Officer Stone tries but she seems to not be able to speak either. Than Father Rivera tries and nothing. Finally she talks but than the warden Green says things have changed. So begins life in prison for her. TBC book.
Imagine waking to find that you couldn't remember anything, your name or how you got to where you are. This is a great prequel which I would heartily recommend and hope that others enjoy it as much as I did. Prison is bad not knowing why you're there worse. Great starter book.
Interesting start to a new series. I cringed through some of it. Time will tell if this series is for me or not. A short prequel so I've no connection to the characters yet. Many of you will like it however prison dramas are not for me.
This is an interesting prequel. A woman with no memory and the men who will stop at nothing to get her to confess her crimes. It is very dark. I would not recommend to anyone with abuse triggers.
I would recommend reading this prequel. I always love when authors are able to give the reader something to get them very interested in continuing to read the other books in a series, which I am starting right after this review! Thank Cara
This is a gripping and intense read that will captivate fans of dark, adventurous romance and fantasy, particularly those who enjoy complex, emotionally charged stories that explore the blurred lines between love and hatred.
"Penumbra" is a well-written and engaging novella that serves as a compelling introduction to the "Dark Moon Prison" world. If you enjoy dark fantasy and omegaverse stories, I recommend giving it a try.
This is a wonderful prequel to what promises to be a brilliant series. Lot’s of possible triggers in this short read as it’s a dark read. It certainly whet my appetite to read the rest of the series.
To sum this up it’s a woman being SAd in prison by an officer to try and get her to confess to a crime she doesn’t remember committing. I will not be reading anymore of this series
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Penumbra sets a dark, shadowy tone from page one, pulling the reader into an eerie world where memory loss, confinement, and distrust reign. The concept of an Omega accused of brutality, with no memory of her crime or her identity, is both tragic and gripping. The sterile setting, paired with the intense emotional strain between captor and captive, creates a haunting mood. While the story leaves plenty of questions unanswered (likely by design) there’s a raw, unsettling intensity in the slow-burn tension and the hint of shared hatred morphing into something much deeper. A moody, atmospheric prequel that promises a storm of chaos and chemistry ahead.
