A tentative peace with the Opplian kingdom along with mountain passes choked with snow both suggest a quiet peaceful season for Trysten and the hordesmen of Aerona weyr. But don't get too comfortable.
The royal family of Cadwaller pays a visit to oversee the completion of a deal with the Seelian kingdom to restore normal relations. But what the Seelians were promised is something Trysten and Elevera can't deliver. Tensions rise. The fate of the kingdom shifts. Clandestine deals threaten to plunge Cadwaller into chaos and bring famine to the dragons of Aerona. All as Exeris prepares for one last gambit.
Being the dragoneer of Aerona weyr may not be enough. Trysten will need to be more. She and her dragon must rise above to set the stage for her greatest trial and final encounter with Exeris.
In this book, we learn the truth about the Caldwell kingdom’s hardships. The Seelian kingdom has kept Caldwell dependent by controlling the taxes and tariffs, affecting both the people and the dragons. To prevent Caldwell from ever gaining stability or independence, they have kept the kingdom locked in ongoing conflict with another realm, blocking any chance of forming new trade agreements or alliances. It’s strategic control — calculated, deeply rooted, and designed to maintain power.
As these realities surface, Trysten begins to understand what it truly means to step into her role. It is not simply a matter of power or ancestry. It is the awareness that she now stands in a position where she can either continue what has always been accepted — or choose to challenge and change it.
This is also where the plans of the Originals come into focus. Trysten learns more about the history, the agreements, and the expectations that have shaped the world she lives in, and she realizes she is not standing on the outside of these forces. She is in the center of them. What is revealed changes her understanding of herself, her purpose, and the future that may now be set in motion. It is not an easy revelation — it is one that demands clarity, strength, and resolve.
This book marks a turning point in the series. The system is exposed. The motives are clear. And Trysten’s role is no longer a question — it’s a call. Off to read the final book-don’t want it to end but bit I can’t wait to see how it all plays out!

Trysten has begun to find her voice and her central beliefs. Not that she didn’t have them before this, but the presence of royalty in her village meant that a lot of decision making was left to those who could more easily naviagate through court intrigue and machinations.
On one hand, the plot becomes clear. On the other hand, we’ve known the plot since the last book. In last, Trysten would have been pulled in opposing directions trying to resolve things. Now, however, she has decided that she’s taking no more nonsense from anyone. It’s set up the last book perfectly. It ought to be an epic ending for a huge tale.
Another great book. What do you do when another horde tries to take over your skies? You take it. How do you begin to understand what the Originals want? One is brought to you. What do you do when a prince dies? You set the next one up to be king. Trysten definitely has her hands full if she can keep her dragons and villagers from going to war.
I’ve so enjoyed learning about Trysten and her dragons! Great series! Can’t wait to read book number nine-I’m excited! This number of words to count as a review thing is annoying!
I love this series! But omg I like some romance too which this doesn't really have. It let's you "assume" two of the male characters are interested in the Herione while she's only interested in one. I want Trysten to be with Prince Aymon.
Really, I absolutely love these books. Every time I think I've figured out what is going to happen next a curve ball comes out of nowhere sending my guessing of the plot line down a new rabbit hole.
Elevera, Aymon, Paige. Awesome characters. I look forward to the times I can grab my book and find out what happens next. Trysten and her horde feel like family to me. SaYalla!!
Compelling story, never ending action and intrigue. I could not put it down in this world, the story and the characters bring the greats to mind. Tolkien, Lackey, Salvatore, Jordan, and so many more
Another thoroughly adventurous and enjoyable book in the series! Quick paced and filled with wit and personality….as well as humor. The tables are starting to turn in favor of peace.
When Trysten and Elevera defeat (or whatever you call it) the Seelians, I CRIED for her brilliance, for her transformation! I have loved reading this series
