When the Faction returns to Creel Creek, Constance thinks it's to help solve the mystery surrounding her missing mother. But they have other priorities... like the spike in attacks coming from the shadow realm.
It doesn't help that Constance has her own demons to face—the kind from hell.
Can they work together to rid the world of these threats? And will Constance finally find out what happened to her mother?
As Grimoire as It Gets is the fifth installment in the Witching Hour series. Perfect for readers of Urban Fantasy, Cozy Mystery, and Paranormal Women’s Fiction.
Christine Zane Thomas is the pen name of a husband and wife team whose love of mystery and sleuths spurred the creation of their own mysterious writer alter-ego.
While not writing, they can be found in northwest Florida with their two children and schnauzer, Tinker Bell.
Their love of food takes them all around the South. Sometimes they sprinkle in the occasional trip to Disney World. Food and Wine is their favorite season.
This is by far the best book in the Witching Hour series! Christine Zane Thomas weaved in so many twists and turns - and managed to keep everything on the rails (even when they were going off the rails for the characters).
Early on in this series the author reeled me in with her inside jokes and slight campiness. (The Creel Creek After Dark podcasts, a favorite ongoing theme, add so much to the storyline.) As the series continued, the Witching Hour characters have filled out into amazing "people" you wouldn't mind having in your own small town. (Although you could probably do without the baddies...)
While there is definitely humor throughout this series, the author also knows when to introduce tender moments. Case in point: In "As Grimoire as It Gets" the scene between Constance and young Elsie on movie night will pull at your heartstrings. (Oh!)
I've loved the relationship between Constance and her familiar, Brad. I bet most readers do. The author laid the groundwork in previous books for testing this critical relationship - and boy did she. I was on pins and needles by the end of this book. In contrast to shaking up the Constance-Brad relationship, the author brought together the town's paranormals in a climax of epic proportions (this is no hyperbole here). That is one scene I would LOVE to see in a movie.
For fans of this series you might notice a bit of a "step back" from character Dave - Constance's love interest. Don't get me wrong, he's still there but this latest book really focuses on the power in (and out of) Constance's hands. I think this was a great choice by the author.
The cliffhangers in "As Grimoire as It Gets" are plentiful. What will happen to "the books"? (Brilliant unwinding of what the individual books really are.) Do we really understand the Faction (and who is controlling it)? Who can Constance trust? And... we said goodbye (for now) to a couple of characters. How will that play out in the next book?
Hurry, Christine Zane Thomas, we're all waiting to find out!
At the end of the last book, I swear Thomas said this book would be the last. I was ecstatic when I found that there was at least one more. Now, I'm old and forgetful, so if she didn't say this was the last book, chalk it up to three adult kids and knee husband leeching my brain!
As for a review, I can't sing enough praises a out Thomas and her amazing skills for story weaving. Her characters and their interactions draw you in, the scenery and small town feel are consistent and memorable, and her plot twists boggle the mind! I seriously hope that book six isn't the end, but I feel sure that Creel Creek has many more stories to share!
OMG!! Friend to enemy and back...enemies to friends (ish)...enemy into enemy...this wonderfully complex tale embodies the old saying, "Believe half of what you see and none of what you hear." The characters, relationships, and skills are evolving. The intensity is ratcheting upwards; "If you can't beat them, join them. Then beat them" sounds so benign but feels so sinister! Yet there's still room for a sweet moment or two, and a child's innocent wish may be granted. This writing duo is amazing; I can't wait to discover what will happen with the shake-up of alliances and when treachery will be revealed!
So I'm really wishing I could give this book a 4.5 or 4.75. I loved the book; however, I totally saw this one person ended up being bad. It really disappointed me because it was the 1st time I saw anything coming and was right about it. And it made me sad to because now the whole series will shift...or I'm willing to bet it's going to. As far as the rest of this book, it was pretty darn good! It had a great story, with the normal unexpected twists and turns, but it also had some sadness in it as well. It made me cry towards the end!! And I'm just hoping everything works and settles down in the next book.
Not certain I can even keep up with the spells and mysteries of each book. I think they get more complicated with each book. Perhaps you need some basic magical understanding to keep up with the intent of the spells? Glad Constance gets started on her mom's recovery but she has lost a lot to get there. Looking forward for Constance working for the Faction. Enjoy!
These authors can spin a story with lots of twist and excellent characters. This series is a bit more melancholy than other books in the genre but it also adds depth. I have to admit that I never expected many of the twist that were revealed as the book progressed. I'm still shocked.
I was really sad to read one of the characters left the story but I really think she has a mission to be determine in the next book. I believe she will come back with a vengeance and help creel creek rid the town of the evil that lurks at night. We'll see when the next book comes out.
I don't always find a seriesof books enjoyable as there are usually one or two that don't hold up well. This series has been the exception so far. Each book has been engaging in its own right and the characters and their stories continue to evolve. It's a wonderful cozy read.
I really love these books & the characters. My only problem is I'm in my 70s & it's sometimes confusing trying to keep track of all the people, especially if they get possessed. I have to keep notes. Often, I'm checking back to remember a reference to an event. I'm starting book #6.: it will be hard to wait for #7.
There's only been 1 other author I loved so much, I signed up for their newsletter. Christine Zane Thomas makes #2. I enjoy the wit, characters, mysteries and continuing storyline. I really enjoy this author's ability to add humor without resorting to foul language. The best dirty joke uses innuendo.
I loved this book so much. Just another fun cozy paranormal mystery. The story of Constance expands as we finally get to explore and solve the long awaited problem of Constance’s mother. What really happened to her mother? In the end, we learn a lot of interesting things about the things that were found out.
This book is a great read but poor Constance seems to encounter frustrating delays at every turn. There are funny moments but the family and friend dynamics are what make this book in my opinion. Grab a copy, get comfy and enjoy!
Amazing story and many more characters. Loved the part that Ivan isn't who we thought he was and Jade/Ivana is pulled into the mix. Looking forward to the next book.
I really like this series And each book gets better and better. There is so much going on and so much danger and intrigue that it keeps you in the edge of your seat. Really good!!
Loved this book. Lots of action and different troubles. I like that they’re vastly different instead of same shh different day haha thanks for another great book. Ready to read the next!
While I've enjoying reading this series I have been disappointed in books 4 and 5, the endings have been so convoluted that I read the last couple chapters twice, but still could not figure out who was doing what. Still worth reading.
Well, some interesting things were revealed in this one. Good twists in the plot and some partial resolutions. Why do I get the feeling it only means there will be new things in need of being brought to a resolution?
I understand that this book is to draw a completion to a story arc. I sort of wanted to see how things were wrapped up, but I just cannot take anymore. None of the characters are growing on my and they seem to just be getting more tedious. I gave up.
As Ghouly As It Gets could be another title for this one! Lots of secrets revealed and a surprise family happening in this installment. Some of the story was a little confusing to follow in the midst of all the secrets and revelations but it all became clear in the end!
So much going on with this one. From daily normal living to uncovering more of the past and bringing a town together. I'm jonesing for a large caramel latte to take me onto the next adventure of Creel Creek!
A lot of things happen in this one and the author does an amazing job with all of it. There were definitely afew twists and turns, one I saw the outcome, one leaves me in utter shock... Can't wait to see what's next.
Book 5 in The Witching Hour series and Constance is still looking for her mum. She's moved in with Dave and that seems to have unsettled gran, who's taken on an apprentice.
There's a BIG ending, and I'm looking forward to book 6.
Not bad for a brainless read, trouble is I been reading so many of this genre lately they've all blended into one. Need to read something with more substance again to appreciate these properly.
Fast paced well written story. Lovable characters. Where is Constance mother's body and who took? Demons, ghouls and evil abound. Happy for now. Great series.
By far the best so far of this series. Thank you you Christine Zane Thomas! I love this series and I can't believe you are making me wait until February 2022 to read the next book.
