Celta, a place of magic, telepathic animal companions, and adventure! Five stories highlighting some fan favorite characters:

Fractured Stone: Struggling with his disinheritance and the loss of his identity, Holm Apple strives to make a new life in a new city with his HeartMate and their Fams.

Hidden Stone: Garrett Primross didn't expect to be hired by a Cat, let alone two of them, and their idea of payment doesn't match his. When a GreatLord appeals for Garrett's help, he's reluctant to take the case, but finds that solving the mystery unexpectedly leads him to inner answers.

HeartStones: Losing his sight and psychic power, treasure hunter Zane Aster wants to make one more score. He discovers a House on the cusp of sentience, but missteps might trigger their deaths.

Stories from Celta!

If you are a fan of Robin D. Owens, own everything she's written, and follow her on Facebook, you might know some of these stories. All are redone, freshly edited, and at their best. If you have never heard of Celta, her magical romantic planet where spells are real and humans talk mentally with cats and each other, you'll be less confused starting with Heart Mate, the first novel in this great series. That leaves great crowds of us to enjoy the latest collection of visits to our favorite destination. Some of these stories fill in backstory, like how Rand Ash and Holm Holly first met. There are also new editions and some new endings, including Robin's story in the Debris and Detritus anthology. All.of them are fun to read and enjoy!

This was a fun one to read. I liked the different stories.

Passage Through Stone - I especially like this first one, sort of wished there was more as it was how things started, the ships leaving earth to find a safe place for people.

Homing Stone - I liked seeing how Holm and Ash became friends. It was a big risk for Ash, but it paid off big time for him.

Fractured Stone - I hated to see Holm struggle in this one, to find his place with his new status. The one good thing is that Lark was there by his side encouraging and supporting him all the way.

Hidden Stone - I think what I liked best about this one was that Garrett was able to change his way of thinking about First Families and that Laev realized who much his family was protecting him. By the end the two of them formed an usual friendship.

HeartStones - I think this one was my favorite. I liked how there were 2 lost souls, the house and Zane. They managed to find each other and be better for it.

Earth and Celta

PASSAGE THROUGH STONE
Colorado Area, UStates Middle Region, Earth

Levona Martinez is a psi mutant who has been hiding in the mountains since the death of her parents two years ago. She had escaped the psi ghetto and now, with her telepathic cat Pizi, is headed back to the city after seeing a great spaceship headed there. The spaceship means that people, psi mutants, are hoping to escape this planet and find another to settle. For Levona, this is the answer to her prayers and she hopes to get a berth for her and Pizi on the ship. But that will prove to be easier said than done. The ship is fully booked, even the cryogenic tubes, so it will take a miracle for Levona to get aboard.

A brave, fearless, intelligent young woman, Levona is determined not to be left behind. What will she have to do to accomplish that?

HOMING STONE
380 Years After Earth Starship Colonization of Celta, Druida City

When he meets with Holm Holly, heir of a FirstFamily, they team up to fight off attackers in a local bar. Holm is unaware of Rand's family background, and both young men agree to meet the next night as Holm must go through his SecondPassage death duels. To Rand's shock, he realizes this has set off his own SecondPassage. His need for revenge on the Rue Family for killing his parents and brothers and destroying the T'Ash Residence, and claiming all of the Ashes' land and money, rumbles to the surface. His FamCat, Zanth, accompanies him as Rand goes to meet Holm. What happens will set the tone for the future of both young men.

FRACTURED STONE
Gael City, Celta, 403 Years after Colonization

Holm Holly, now Holm Apple after being disinherited by his parents, has left Druida City for Gael City to live with his HeartMate, Lark, and their FamCats. With some financial help from Lark, Holm has rented a building where he is opening a fencing and fighting salon. It has been a harsh few months since the split with his powerful family, and, if not for Lark, Holm doesn't know how he would be able to cope with starting a new life. His worries about his future, his grief, and the plain shock of his father's action have left Holm doubting himself. And now he must somehow find the gilt to finance this new business, and hope his experience at his uncle's salon is enough to keep the gilt coming in. Holm hates to rely on Lark's income, even though she is not bothered at all by it. Will he be able to gather enough clients to give both he and Lark a comfortable future?

HIDDEN STONE
Druida City, Celta, 421 Years After Colonization

Garrett Primross Is barely able to make ends meet as a private investigator. He will soon be unable to pay the rent on his building unless someone walks in the door with a very big investigative need. So when a shabby black cat arrives and makes him an offer, Garrett is not too excited. Black Cat Two is a Familar Animal Companion who is exceptionally well spoken. He reveals that he is representing Black Pierre, the FamCat of the T'Hawthorn Residence, and Garrett is suddenly interested. He and Black Cat Two head to the residence where he also meets a young calico cat who escorts him to Black Pierre, who now resides with the chef. Black Pierre is furious because he has been accused by the Residence and staff of stealing Hawthorn items. He wants Garrett to find out who stole them. However, GreatLord T'Hawthorn appears on the scene, and, he, too, wants to know where the stolen items are. His staff and the Residence refuse to tell him anything. Much to Garrett's surprise, the GreatLord, Laev, hires him, immediately transferring a large sum of gilt to Garrett's bank account Now to find the items and the culprit.

HEARTSTONES
Druida City, 424 Years After Colonization

The old house is lonely after losing the last of its inhabitants. A long-forgotten memory brings up words that come from the walls "If I am debris, then you must be detritus". The house isn't sure what that means, but maybe that's its name. So when a weary, sickly, mostly blind man enters the house looking for a stolen brooch dropped by a thief, the house has hopes. Zane Aster can barely walk, his back is aching badly, and yet if he can find the brooch, he might be able to collect the reward from the FirstFamily it was stolen from. Inside the old house, Zane knows the jewel is, indeed, there, he can feel the magical powers it holds. Meanwhile, Debris and Detritus realizes that a being is here, and the house feels something it can't explain when that being falls and is quiet - could it be concern? Will these two sentient beings discover something about themselves?

STONE IN ZANTH'S PAW
Ash Family Beach Estate, Druida City, 426 Years After Colonization

The top FamCat of the Planet Celta, Zanth is not pleased that he has work to do on a beautiful summer day. Especially that he must escort two silly turtles to the seaside to meet their Mother Turtle, Swift-In-The-Sea. The turtle girls are so excited that their mental comments are ringing in Zanth's ears. To make matters look even worse should anyone see Zanth, two of the housefluff bunnies accompanied them. Danith D'Ash, animal healer and one of Zanth's people, has cared for the two turtles for their mother, who does not like to deal with humans. Zanth gets the girls to the shoreline, where he runs into a par of wolves with their pup who look to be starving and injured. Sending them back to the house for Danith's care, Zanth then finds himself being carried on the back of one of the turtles to a small sandbar where they'll meet their mother. Terrified of the ocean, but not wanting to show weakness, Zanth will have to convince one of the turtles or their mother to return him to shore. What has Zanth gotten himself into?

If you haven't read Robin D. Owens' Celta books, you have no idea what you're missing! Her amazing imagination, her incredibly human characters (yes, even the Fam animals!), and the detailed life on Celta have kept me mesmerized for years. There is plenty of humor, poignant stories, and romance to keep readers coming back for more. I loved this anthology, and confess that my favorite is PASSAGE THROUGH STONE, loving the strength and bravery of both Levona and Pizi. One of the things that keeps bringing me back to Celta, over and over and over again, is that it feels like a nice place to visit and a place that I would actually want to live in. Not that it doesn’t have its share of problems, if only because it was settled by humans and, well, humans gonna human in all sorts of ways both terrible and wonderful. But also because the place is more or less functional, with occasional hiccups because, again, humans.

So it’s a place where people can, do and will screw up their own lives and the lives of those nearest and dearest to them. A place where sometimes evil flourishes, and occasionally stupid holds sway, but for the most part things generally work. And that’s kind of a refreshing change from a lot of SF and Fantasy worlds where the story generally starts with everything going totally off the rails into situations where things are always darkest just before they turn completely black.

Celta is an SF world that reads like a fantasy world. It’s part of a tradition that includes Pern, Darkover and Harmony. These are all worlds that were settled by breakaway groups of humans that left Earth and were then lost or abandoned or a bit of both.

Celta is particularly similar to Darkover and Harmony in that the people who left Earth all had psi powers and were all persecuted for those powers.

But the first story in Hearts and Stones reminds me of a bit of science fiction romance I read years ago, Trancehack by Sonya Clark. In Trancehack, and in Passage Through Stone, we get to see conditions on Earth for psis before the migration, as opposed to the post-landfall stories we have for both Darkover and Harmony. And the conditions on Earth for psis are pretty bleak and generally awful. Conditions on Earth in general suck in this post-apocalyptic world, but it looks like the psis are getting all the blame for events they had no part of, as a way for the Earth governments to point fingers at someone else. Or to put it the way it was said in a different world, “the humans kill what they do not understand”. So this opening story to the collection, and to Celta as a whole, is downright bleak. It’s kind of a hard read, especially in the plausibility of the terrible treatment of those who are ‘different’, but that plausibility is what makes it sear.

The rest of the stories in the collection take place on Celta throughout its history as we’ve seen it through the course of the marvelous Celta’s HeartMates series. Most of the stories either provide insight into events that happened either before or after the books, or they provide further exploration into characters that we’ve otherwise seen only glimpses of through the main narratives.

The two stories that stand out in this regard are Homing Stone and Fractured Stone, as they serve as bookends on the life of Holm Holly, a character who appears multiple times through the course of the series.

But the first of those stories, Homing Stone, is also a prequel for the first book in the series as they were originally published. It’s the story of a young Rand Ash, the hero of Heart Mate, setting out to befriend Holm, the heir to one of the great families of Celta, in order to enlist Holm’s, and his powerful family’s, help in righting all the wrongs that were done to Rand and his family when he was a child. Now that he’s an adult, Rand is ready to deliver a cold serving of revenge and a hot slice of justice to the people who murdered his family and stole his birthright. This story serves as both the portrait of the beginning of a life-long friendship and an introduction to characters that series readers have long loved.

Fractured Stone, on the other end of the spectrum, shows Holm Holly, now Holm Apple, forced to make his own way for himself and his heartmate in a new city after having been disowned by his birth family as a result of the events in Heart Duel. Although there are, of necessity, references to events that occurred in that previous book, the heart of this story is wrapped up in its portrait of a man making his way in a direction he never expected to have to take, without the love and support he expected to have all of his life. Holm has lost a great deal of status, and now has to make a name for himself based solely on his own accomplishments. It’s a hard lesson in letting go, but very well done.

Last, but not least – if only because Zanth would NEVER allow himself to be the least of anything, there’s Stone in Zanth’s Paw. One of the loveliest things about Celta are its Fams, the psychically powerful familiar companion animals that provide so much of the heart – and comic relief – that imbues this series. Zanth is the FamCat of Rand Ash, the Fam of all Fams of the entire series. He’s also a great, big, egotistical cat who will remind catservants that as much as we wish we understood what our cats are trying to tell us that it would not be an unmitigated blessing. Zanth is not merely every bit as demanding as any cat you’ve ever met, he’s capable of expounding upon his demands and his rights and his status and his deserved privileges at every opportunity.

The story about the Stone in Zanth’s Paw is a slight story that might have been better served up in a previous Celta collection, Celta Cats, but it still serves as a terrific reminder of the wonder, occasional majestic and frequent sheer hubris of these telepathic animal companions.

Escape Rating A-: Hearts and Stones is a terrific collection for anyone who has already been to Celta and is just itching for an excuse to return. If you’ve never been to Celta, but are interested in taking the trip, start with Heart Mate.

Owens builds on life before Celta and returns to beloved characters

Robin D Owens is a wonderful worldbuilder. This anthology gives a glimpse into life before the generational ships left Earth to eventually settling on Celta. There are also stories that build onto previous characters, such as T'Ash and Holm beginning as friends and allies, and Primrose as he searches for Laev T'Hawthorne's lost family items and how they become friends. Each story is a worthwhile and quick read.

Several of the stories in Hearts and Stones fill in holes left as the series has progressed. I enjoyed those. I was worried I would be lost as I have missed reading the later books in the series but I had no trouble with the stories or the characters. Seems I remember them all. The first story was my favorite. It is set on Earth at the time the starships were loading and leaving for Celta. I loved the main character and her cat but was left wondering what happened to the people left on Earth. There seems to be a lot of untold stories there.

2021 bk 114. Hearts and Stones is Robin D. Owens Covid gift to us - her readers and fans. During the time of isolation she worked on writing or revising 6 stories of Celta, bringing us new and old familiar characters. I found the stories a delight to read and wanted more of the new characters. I was also glad to fill in some holes in the lives of old characters. My favorite of the six would be hard to pick, but I think it would have to be of Xanth - the fam cat that started it all and his adventures with the turtle tots. Great read!

Wonderful meeting new and old friends

2 of the stories centered on new characters. By the end you wanted to meet them again and learn more of their lives. At the same time, what we were given was complete enough with no feeling of being left hanging
Other stories revisited people from other books, allowing us to dip back into their lives, very enjoyable.
Makes me want to reread the entire series, while waiting impatiently for another new book

I am a big fan of Robin Owens, especially her Celta Heartmate series. When I discovered she was creating a new book of short stories with many of our favorites, I was thrilled.

I loved Hearts and Stones, as it was such a wonderful and enjoyable read. Hopefully, we will get more from Robin in the Celta world. Thank you Robin for this fun book.

Wonderful return to some of Celta's characters from past books! This is a compilation of stories that "add" to some of her previous characters and reading of them quickly brought back memories of her other full stories...nostalgic like a favorite security blanket especially during these difficult times. Now I want to curl up and reread all the books and of course still wish for my own Fam (cat, house fluff bunnies, or ?) and sentient Residence*~*~*

Hearts and Stones is a selection of short stories beginning with the escape from earth of a courageous group of mutant pioneers on three space ships that head for the planet Celta. The other stories pick up with characters familiar to reader of the Celta HeartMate series and give us insight to the characters such as Rand T'Ash and Holm Holly. This was an excellent addition to the series and retained the flavor of Robin D. Owen's longer novels.

I almost didn't buy this book as I felt the Celta series was going a bit stale after the last book, which was a struggle for me to finish. I am glad that I didn't give up-this book of short stories are very enjoyable. I especially liked the insights on the inner ticking of Holm Holly, the short stories covering him made him a character that is much more likeable.

I love reading every book Robin D Owens comes out with. I have so many good memories of reading them and this one will join them as it got me through many late night feedings with my newborn baby.
You definitely need to read her Celta series before reading this, which I strongly suggest. Each of these stories adds more to the world she's created and I love it.
