Summary: A well structured, light read about leadership. The book looks at leadership through the lens of three perspectives: if you have a bad boss, if you manage a bad boss and if you yourself are a bad boss. Each section is worth reading though to build a more full picture of leadership and to give you different strategies and insights into workplace sections. There's lots of reflection activities and each section has actionable tools and advice on what to do given a specific leadership section. There's also a myriad of examples to help contextualise the theory behind the book. All in all, it's a solid leadership book, written in an engaging style and worth a read.
I would recommend this book to anyone who works with other people, particularly leaders.
The main message I took from this book is that through intentional action, a lot of difficult workplace situations can be avoided and improved.
Some notable points: - People don't leave their job, they leave their boss.
- Eight myths of the modern workplace: 1. Leadership is a title. 2. Leading is one-size-fits-all approach. 3. Leaders are not needed in a flat organisational structure. 4. Leadership is an innate ability. 5. Leaders have no emotions. 6. Bad leadership is attributable to bad people. 7. Leadership needs are different for different ages. 8. Leaders, employees and bosses should love their job, no matter what.
- When you get to the point that your work is making you so unhappy that it's affecting your wellbeing, you need to consider 'voting yourself off the field'.
- A job isn't worth selling your soul or your values for, because once your integrity is gone it's hard to restore it.
- Before you check the effectiveness of the leaders reporting to you, reality check the effectiveness of your own leadership.
- People who make the best bosses have a genuine desire to make the life of those around them better.
- Your tone and behaviour set the standard for what's acceptable and unacceptable in your team, so it's important you know the truth about your management and leadership.
- When you start to think you're the smartest person in the room, you need to find another room.
- Purpose without supporting behaviours is meaningless.
Excellent book that is full of insights, real life stories and words of wisdom from an author who knows what they are talking about. The easy to follow step by step approach to assessing the situation, strategising the way forward, acting with purpose and reflecting provides practical guidance to all employees whether they are a boss or not and whether new to the job or a long-term employee. Working through the book is almost like having Michelle as your personal coach.
There are lots of leadership books on the market, and everyone has a bad boss story. What I liked about this book is that it brought those two elements together in a helpful way. It shared useful organisational and leadership data and research but kept it practical with tools and techniques you can implement. I also enjoyed the stories. All in all, a great book to read. Helpful and hopeful.
Bad Boss is one of those books that surprises you – in a good way. I was expecting it to be helpful, but also full of negative bad boss stories. Sure, it has a few. However, it was far more constructive and insightful – and shared stories that demonstrated how tough situations can be turned around. It is a super practical and helpful approach. I really enjoyed reading it.
Almost 43 years into my career and I could relate to so many parts of this book, Michelle has written superbly and thoroughly enjoyed the read. I always considered that all leaders can manage but not all managers can lead. It doesn't matter where you are at in your career, this book reminds you of the human factor; the need for good, open and honest relationships that brings the best out of people and the best out of you.
