Newly widowed mother Abby Baker goes home to Hope Harbor to help her ailing mother and restart her life. Weighed down by grief and fear of failure, she wishes she had the strength of her grandmother, who raised a young child alone while taking on the role of lighthouse keeper after her husband drowned. What was the secret of Granny Abigail’s strength?
Carson Stevens is a lighthouse enthusiast who has bought the deteriorating Hope Island lighthouse to restore it and turn it into a bed-and-breakfast. When he meets Abby, he wants the attractive granddaughter of the former keepers to be part of the restoration.
As Abby and Carson work together, they uncover clues to a family secret that threatens to change Abby’s life forever. But someone is trying to sabotage their efforts at restoration.
Renovating the old lighthouse is Abby and Carson’s goal, but as they grow closer, they discover that what they’ve really needed is a renovation of their hearts.
Praise for Abigail’s Secret
Who doesn’t enjoy the beauty of a lighthouse and the lure of the rocky coast of a Maine island? While reading Abigail’s Secret, I was moved into thinking the lighthouse and its island are metaphors for brokenness and loss, that bring back wholeness and love, while revealing ‘Abigail’s Secret’. To quote, “She (meaning Abby, Ms. Turk’s heroine) was connected to the island as if it, too, were a relative.” Readers of contemporary romances will want to add this novel to their list of favorites.

A lighthouse. A new friend. A family secret. Abigail’s Secret delivers a sweet story of family relationships and new beginnings, with a bit of mystery thrown in. Turk skillfully weaves past and present into a story sure to touch your heart.
Abigail’s Secret by Marilyn Turk is a charming contemporary Christian mystery suspense that I loved. The novel concerns the restoration of a light house and the nearby keepers house. The old connects with the new as some surprising artefacts are discovered. This reminds the reader that God can restore our lives. He renovates us from the inside out, blending the best of the old with the new. God is the light-bearer. Like the light house He warns us of danger if we just keep focused on Him. The generations are linked down the years by a diary with entries from 1945. A grandmother and her granddaughter share not just a name but life experiences too. There is a mystery to solve. Happenings have a threat level that raises the reader’s heart rate. See if you can work it out. The women in the story are over-comers. They have overcome loss and grief as they raise their daughters as a single parent. God knows just what we need. He sends people to walk alongside us at just the right time – angels in human form. We all have fears. We need to release our fears to God in the form of prayers – worry about nothing, pray about everything. There is a wonderful warm community feel to the whole novel. The reader ‘feels’ cocooned by the characters and included in the story. I always love Marilyn Turk’s novels. It is such a thrill to read her books. They are delightful. I received this book for free. A favourable review was not required and all views expressed are my own.
Just finished reading this very easy to read book about a young widow living in Maine with her young daughter as she read her grandmother’s journal of her life as the wife of a keeper of the light and then she became the keeper of the lighthouse. The journal flashed back to the 40’s sharing details of the war and what it was like to live during that time. It also shared how life was like in Maine and interesting facts about lighthouses as well as restoration. Lots of layers of plots as story unfolds in present time and gives insights to the past and how that impacts their lives. Loved all of the characters in this book and the writing paid attention to detail. Loved it from the first page. I received a free copy of this book and was asked to give an honest review - which is easy with a book so well written.
Although historical fiction/romance is not my preferred genre, Abigail's Secret captured my attention and kept me turning the pages. Turk has masterfully crafted a story which blends issues and intrigue in current day with events which occurred during World War II. I was pleasantly surprised to find myself learning facts about the war which I had never known. The book paints an inviting picture of a seaside town with an island nearby where a lighthouse stands. Throw in a budding romance, a touch of suspense, and the revelation of hidden family history, and you've got yourself a great read.
NOTE: I received a complimentary copy of Abigail's Secret, but I am not required to write a positive review and have not received any compensation.
I generally enjoyed this contemporary Christian romance with a hint of mystery. The story centers around a recent widow who returns to the Maine coast where her grandparents tended an island lighthouse for decades. The contemporary romance is balanced with revelations from her grandparents' experiences during World War II.
Besides being entertained by a romance, I like to learn a bit about a new topic when I read fiction. In this case it was that four German submarines patrolling near the Maine coast surrendered at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard when Germany surrendered, May 7, 1945. I had no idea.
Turk's novel is a fun novel even though the plot was predictable. The end went fast, from the secret being revealed to immediately moving on. The build up was such that I expected some issues with the revelation. In fact, I scrolled back on my ebook to make sure I hadn't passed a few pages. The characters were pretty well developed and I particularly liked little Emma. The setting was was interesting, an island off the Maine coast. I would have liked to know how they generated power, however. I just like those kinds of setting details. The Christian witness is strong although I was disappointed more compassion was not shown to a homeless veteran. Turk missed a potential teaching opportunity at that plot point.
I received a complimentary digital copy of this book from the author. My comments are an independent and honest review.
Simply put, I enjoyed Abigail’s Secret immensely. I loved the way the author used the diary of Abby’s grandmother to tell her part of the story. Her descriptions immersed me in the life of a lighthouse keeper and how WWII played a part in her life. As children and grandchildren we have a certain perspective of our parents and grandparents, and it was interesting to watch Abby get to know her grandmother at a deeper level through her journal. Enough tidbits were threaded into the story that I was able to determine the secret, but there were aspects that surprised me. Having renovated a historic building, I appreciated the author’s descriptions of the work being done without the passages seeming like a DIY article or glossing over the realities of construction. It’s obvious she did her research. I liked Carson’s down-to-earth personality. He knows he has the tendency to be idealistic and makes efforts to temper that. I love Maine, especially the rugged coast, so I especially enjoyed this virtual visit to a place that holds many happy memories.
Marilyn Turk’s latest “lighthouse” story introduces us to two Abigails: a present-day young widow who needs confidence and courage to fully restart her life, and her grandmother Abigail, whom we meet through journal entries made in the wartime 1940s. Finding this journal, secreted in a lighthouse undergoing renovation by a new man friend in her life, contemporary Abigail draws strength from reading about her grandmother’s life and faith and begins to unravel the insecurities plaguing her life. Danger and potential trouble bring new opportunities for personal insights to arise, and a long-kept secret opens a door Abigail never anticipated. The characters in this story are genuine, and the plot grows more interesting in each chapter. Highly recommended! Note: I received a complimentary book but was not required to write a positive review and have not received any compensation for my review.
Once I started reading Abigail's Secret I was hooked. I love the lighthouse being in the middle of the story, being on an island. It sounds so wonderful! Abby makes a good detective/researcher trying to find out the secret of her grandmother that was an official keeper of the lighthouse. The hard work involved was amazing. There's a bit of romance here and there which is just right for me. Super book! I received a complimentary book, but I am not required to write a positive review and have not received any compensation.
I really enjoyed this book. Just enough romance, mystery and suspense in an interesting setting. I was a little sad when I got to the end of the book. I hope the author writes a sequel!
Main Characters Abby Baker: San Diego interior designer moved back home to Maine Carson Stevens: Just bought the Hope Harbor lighthouse Emma: Abigail's 5-yr old K. E. Lawrence: Seems to know Abby on sight Grace Pearson: Abby's mother Abigail Martin: Grace's mother, Abby Baker's grandmother
Interesting little romance including a lighthouse which I enjoy. This is my first time reading this author.
Abby Baker, a young widow, was a San Diego interior designer returning to Maine to help her mother who suffered severe COPD. At the lighthouse memorial for her grandparent's, who served as keepers during World War II at the Hope Harbor lighthouse, Abby met Carson Stevens, the man who recently purchased the island and the lighthouse.
During their friendship Abigail came into possession of not only copies of her grandfather's logs, but a journal her grandmother had kept after her husband died. This turns out to be quite a revelation.
Present day Abby is named after her grandmother Abigail from the WWII timeline. Which Abigail has the "secret" from the title is for the reader to find out in the book.
As I was reading this it reminded me of a book I recently read by Roseanne White, "Yesterday's Tides”. In both were women during WWII who had friendships with Coast Guardsmen protecting the coast from German U-Boats. One woman was in North Carolina, the other in Maine. Both women were given their sugar rations by the coastguard members and both women used the sugar to bake things for the men. Both books surprised me by information about the German's spying under water and attacking American ships off the Atlantic coast from Maine to North Carolina, possibly further.
The book's romance was somewhat predictable. And the "secret" was at least in part foreseeable halfway through the book. But the faith element was beautifully done, much of which included prayer and trusting God.
The ending was a bit rushed. Events and information were brought out toward the end that needed expounding like the relationship between Abby, Grace and newly added characters. Completion of the lighthouse renovation and anything other than friendship between the two main characters were not included until the epilogue.
I bought both the book and the audible version (at a reduced rate… and there was a reason for that). Due to the sing-songy narrator and her mispronouncing words, I would have preferred reading it.
“I promised I’d keep the secret until I die, and I will keep that promise.”
After reading a previous book by Marilyn Turk, I quickly decided I wanted to read her newest, Abigail’s Secret. It is a dual timeline, one part taking place in the present and one in the 1940s, both involving Hope Harbor, Maine.
Abby Baker is a widow with a five-year-old daughter. She has returned to her hometown to care for her mother, whose health is declining. At a service honoring her lighthouse keeper grandparents, Abby meets Carson Stevens, the man who bought that lighthouse. Carson dreams of turning the lighthouse into a B and B.
Between her mother’s memories and an unexpected discovery, we slowly see Abby’s grandmother, Abigail’s, life unfold. Abigail is a person Abby highly regards for her strength and resiliency. What makes Abigail so strong?
At first, I wasn’t very invested in Abby and Carson’s lives, and I did have a few questions about Abby’s mother’s memories. By the last fourth of the book, the action picked up and the pieces began to come together. I was flipping pages as quickly as possible at that point. I really did enjoy the conclusion! (And I’d love to see that renovated lighthouse.) Discussion questions are included at the end, so the book could be used for a book club.
I received a copy of the book from Celebrate Lit. No positive review was required, and all opinions are my own.
Notable Quotables:
“I keep reading my Bible and repeating the verses that say, “You are not alone. The Lord is with you.” And I know He is, even if it doesn’t feel like it sometimes.”
“Maybe it was time to quit running away and start running toward something.”
“Don’t make promises about the future. You never know what the future holds.”
I love lighthouses, and was very involved in this story set around a fictional lighthouse in Maine. It's both a historical WWII book and a contemporary book, because we keep getting snippets of the lighthouse keeper and her life during the war. The suspense part didn't start right away, which I appreciated! We got to know the main characters and watch them build the friendship that runs through the book. I enjoyed how the suspense unfolded along with the stories of WWII. There are a few different things going on that may or may not be related, but they hold the story together! I loved how it wasn't just a story about one woman, but it involved Abby's daughter, mother and grandmother! I also loved the hero! I never pictured Carson as a typical hero, but as more of the average Joe. The one most girls overlook or even just keep in the friend category, but Grace knows what a treasure he is and helps by giving him some great advice regarding chasing her daughter! She sees his true intentions and gives him the green light while also warning him to tread lighly! I loved it! If you enjoy sweet/clean romance, suspense, historical or contemporary, then I hope you will too!

Abigail’s Secret by Marilyn Turk Review by Sue B. Crews
A lighthouse and romance and secrets, OH MY! Marilyn Turk weaves together all of these elements into her new Christian fiction novel, Abigail’s Secret. The main characters are comfortable in their Christian faith. The story is set in contemporary Maine but includes historical references to World War II Maine as well. The best part of the book are the mysteries and secrets that creep up as the story progresses. Abigail’s Secret is an excellent read. I highly recommend it to all readers of Christian fiction.
I received a complimentary book, but I am not required to write a positive review and have not received any compensation. My review contains my own thoughts regarding this book.
If you're looking for a book to transport you from the humdrum of quarantine life to a rich and vibrant multi-generational tale, set in a charming town near the coast, then Abigail's Secret is just what you need. I love books that can whisk me away from the first page and keep me engrossed till the end. I could almost feel the mist against my skin and smell the salty sea air.
Beyond the incredible setting, the plot of this book is deep and meaningful. Abigail learns about herself through her grandmother's diary and is able to find the building blocks to start again--with the very appealing Carson, who is also doing a building project of his own. Add in the clever mystery element (I won't give it away) and the fascinating historical tidbits, and this book has something for everyone!!!
Marilyn does such a wonderful job of developing the characters in all her books , it makes you feel like they are your friends. I especially enjoyed the way she included several generations in this book. She transports you back several generations as if you are there, and then back to current days as Abigail's secret unfolds. She has hints throughout the book so I had part of the secret figured out before the end of the book, but there were some unexpected twists that were surprises for me. This is definitely an enjoyable book to read.
Other titles by Marilyn Turk that I’ve read were period pieces. It was interesting to read a modern day suspense novel while also visiting the 1940’s through Abigail’s journal. I enjoyed learning more about Maine, the lighthouses, and the Coast Guard’s duties during the Second World War. Marilyn’s characters easily drew me to them, and I was curious to find out what would happen next. Abigail’s Secret is a fun and informative read and I would gladly recommend it.
I received a complimentary book, but I am not required to write a positive review and have not received any compensation. This was a wonderful story of strength, forgiveness and so much more. I found the information on lighthouses extremely interesting and enjoyed the log books, diary and historical information. Lots of suspense and felt the characters were realistic and described well. Highly recommend this book and wasn't ready for the Epilogue as it came too soon.
The story kept you wanting more. Reading about the woman taking on the job of the lighthouse and raising a child reminded me of my grandmother. She was a strong woman because she not only raised her own children she helped raise all her grandchildren too.
Delightful love story, though takes the whole book for it to develop. Wonderfully descriptive of the area and the mystery that unfolds through the story gives it extra depth.
I enjoyed this book. Carson and Abigail are likable and the slow progression of their relationship based around the common interest of the island and lighthouse is authentic. The secret is unexpected and well-built in the story and character backgrounds. See for yourself!
Wow! More then one story in this book. Marilyn did a great job weaving these stories together and separate at the same time. Plus!! New information on lighthouses and their keepers. Great read for all, don't have to be a lighthouse fan to love this book and intriguing story.
Marilyn Turk is known for her lighthouse historical stories, but this contemporary romance had the aspect of a dual timeline causing it to be a wonderful contemporary romance filled with history. Abby meeting Carson who was restoring the lighthouse her grandparents had been keepers of in the 1940’s brought a mystery element to this tale. When Abby visited so many memories flowed back from her childhood and she was enthralled with the renovations. Her past career was an interior designer, thus she could imagine the new colors, fixtures for the Bed and Breakfast Carson intended it to become. There is a mystery element not only from Abby’s grandmother’s journal but also Carson experiencing setbacks with tools missing, damage, etc. A quick read that is well worthwhile with the vivid scenes, history and talking about renovations on a lighthouse and the workings of the lighthouse when in use.
This read was well documented with research not only for WWII history and how it affected lighthouse keepers but all the reconstruction aspects of an old lighthouse. There is a faith message intermingled in the story along with some surprises for Abby and her mother.
I received a complimentary e-book copy of this book from the author and was under no obligation to write a positive review. I have shared my own opinion.
Marilyn Turk, the Lighthouse Lady, is a master of characterization. In Abigail's Secret, Turk carefully builds her characters' personalities through conversations and personal reflections, and even uses historical documents as a building tool. She even crafts the local lighthouse and keeper's quarters as a magnet to draw in and bind her characters together.
The natural attraction between Abby and Carson eventually leads to romance; Carson's fondness for Emma, Abby's daughter, helps move the relationship along. Kindness and caring, and examples of love and tenderness abound in each person the author describes; from Abby's ailing mother, Grace, to her grandparents, Charles and Abigail who were the lighthouse keepers during WWII. After Charles's death, Abigail continued keeping the light while raising her infant daughter, a monumental task accomplished through her unwavering faith in the Lord.
Abigail's Secret is chocked full of historical details and unexpected mysteries the reader doesn't want to miss. Marilyn Turk's easy, conversational style is a pleasure to read. I hope you will enjoy Abigail's Secret as much as I did.
I was gifted the book by the author and am under no obligation to give a favorable review. I choose to do so because it is a worthy read
Abigail's Secret by Marilyn Turk was the escape I needed during these turbulent times. I read it until I fell asleep and couldn't wait to wake up to it. Turk hooks you from the first paragraph with authentic, quality writing throughout with no mid-book lull. The characters are reliable, likable and consistent. It is always a bonus to learn some facts while reading for pleasure and Turk's meticulously researched book taught me things about World War ll, lighthouses and renovation projects. This Christian romance has just the right amount of spirituality to feel natural, never preachy. Turk glides seamlessly back and forth between historical and contemporary fiction, linking them together to create the best of both worlds. As the title suggests, there are secrets and mysteries to unravel and Turk layers them flawlessly, keeping me guessing until the end. I absolutely want to visit my first lighthouse after reading this book. I recommend this book wholeheartedly. Disclaimer* I received a free copy of this book and was promised nothing in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
I always love stories set in the present that give me a glimpse from the past. That's exactly what I experienced when reading Abigail's Secret. Fortunately, it doesn't take too long to discover what the secret is, although there are two Abigails in the story and the secret belonged to the one I didn't expect.
As another reviewer stated, this was an easy read. Light on the romance with more focus on the lighthouse restoration and the older Abigail's secret diary. I would have liked the storyline regarding the yacht owner to have occurred a little earlier in the story. The explanation for his interest in the younger Abigail happened more quickly than I liked. There was not enough time to flesh out his connection to Abigail and her mother. Likewise, her connection to Carson was all wrapped up in the epilogue. It's probably just my preference that both scenes had been expanded further.
Although this was a miss for me, I am reading something else by this author as part of a novella collection and enjoying it much more.
*Many thanks to the author for providing a copy for review.
A lighthouse, and the island it sits on - long forgotten - finding new life as mysteries of days gone by are brought to light. Carson Stevens has long dreamt of owning a lighthouse and finally that dream comes to fruition in Hope Harbor, Maine. Many hours of hard work will bring its glory back, but the troubles begin.... Abby Baker, granddaughter to the last lighthouse keepers, returns from the west coast to help her mother who is not well. Enjoying the gorgeous scenery and wanting to learn more about the lighthouse, she volunteers to help with the renovation, discovering all kinds of fascinating historical information.
The wonderful description of the rugged beauty of the area would certainly be enough to make me want to visit. The theme of second chances and new beginnings is woven throughout the book. Add a little mystery, intrigue and a possible romance and you have a lovely way to spend an afternoon.
This ARC was received through Candlelight Fiction, LPC books and Iron Stream Media. The comments and impressions are my own and were in now way solicited.
This was a surprisingly good read that kept me up at night until I finished the story. First of all, this is a Christian based read. There are multiple references to prayer and to God. There is no bad language or adult situations. It is part mystery, part romance, and part multi generational saga. It centers around a couple back in WWII that cared for a lighthouse in Maine and on the modern day descendents of that couple. However, there is a twist which is what makes this story interesting. While I pretty much knew what was going to happen, it was the journey of the characters that kept me reading. An island, a lighthouse, and a promise is the theme on which this story is built. Add in some gentle romance and you have an unforgettable story! A must Christian based read.
Marilyn does a wonderful job of interweaving a love story with mystery, historical accuracy, and, as always, her signature lighthouse. Her extensive historical research and the way she masterfully inserts little known historical facts into the thread of her story make history come alive. I particularly like the storyline of the granddaughter who so closely relates to her grandmother's difficult circumstances and wishes she had her grandmother's strength and courage. The way Marilyn presents the grandmother's life through her journal allows the reader to slip back into the past along with her main character. I also love the way she portrays the family dynamics with the three generations of women and the gently unfolding attraction between her main characters. Although I guessed Abigail's secret, Marilyn added an unexpected, exciting twist at the end which I did not see coming.
