I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.Key West Dead by Mark Nolan is the sixth book in the Jake Wolfe series. Like the previous books, it works well as a stand-alone. This series has become a favourite of mine and it was a thrill returning to Jake and Cody’s world. Sit back, relax and prepare for an explosive ride.
Although not as thrilling as the previous books, I enjoyed Key West Dead. This may have a lot to do with the fact that Jake no longer works for the secret Black Ops team P.O.E.T.S (President’s Operation Emergency Team). Jake and Cody are used to facing deadly situations, and this time was no different.
Jake, Cody and Sarah took a trip to the Florida Keys to attend the wedding of a fellow marine. However, what should have been a day of celebration turned into a time of mourning. Someone intent on revenge blew up the newlywed’s boat, killing them instantly. Now Jake and Cody find themself in a race against time to stop a bomber whose main intent lies in revenge.
Nolan delivered a story filled with intrigue, drama, romance and humour. It had me turning the pages as I tried to figure out the identity of the bomber and the motive behind the bombings. During the course of the investigation, the bomber deemed Jake and Cody a threat, ultimately placing them in his crosshairs.
A few times throughout the story, I feared for Jake and Cody because of the bomber’s many attempts on their lives. These moments made me nervous and kept me on the edge of my seat.
I had fun reconnecting with the characters whom I love. However, despite my growing affection for these characters, Cody remains my favourite. Smart, intelligent, adorable, but deadly given the situation.
Mark Nolan – Jake Wolf Series Bk 6 – Key West Dead – Reviewed 3/20/21 – Read 3/12/21
When a wedding turns into MURDER, Jake and Cody are on the search for the MURDERER!
Jake, Sarah, Terrell, Alicia, and Cody all traveled to Key West to attend the wedding of Harlan and Aubrey. Harlan was a fellow veteran and almost all of the guests at the wedding were vets. Jake and Sarah rented a boat to stay in with Cody as they were trying out the living together thing. While they attended the wedding, they left Cody back on the boat. Cody had also been a war dog, his handler passed away and Jake adopted him.
Terrell and Alicia were here for the wedding, and a little vacation time together. As we know Jake and Terrell were in the service together, and Terrell had donated his blood when Jake and his IED detection dog were blown up. The men were best friends but more than that they were officially blood brothers.
As Jake walked around and watched out for things, he kept getting the icy feeling of danger up the back of his neck. Lately, many veterans had been getting death threats, therefore, Jake and Terrell were armed and keeping an eye on things. Then when a drone flew over and hesitated, he snapped a photo and sent it to Terrell. When he came over, he asked him what he thought, and then told his old lieutenant, about the icy feeling that he had. As they were talking Terrell asked if he had heard from Conch, another vet from their old squad. They were both sure that he would attend, but that he was a no-show. Again, Jake just couldn’t shake the feeling that something was wrong.
As the wedding started slowing down, Jake and Sarah walked with the couple down to the dock so that Jake could ferry them out to the sailboat, called the Mojo. They planned to take their honeymoon trip by sailing around the Bahamas. Again, that icy feeling went down his neck. When Cody alerted, sniffing the air and whining, he tried to get Harlan to let him and Cody board so that Cody could check out the boat. Harlan told him that he was just being paranoid, plus Cody had already been on board the day before. Jake let it go, but when the Mojo exploded, Jake almost collapsed!!! Cody was barking, as if to say, “I tried to tell you something was wrong”, but now it is too late.
And the story begins as they hunt for the killer…
What did I like? I have read all of this series and certainly loved every single one of them. I was fortunate to have featured this author on my site, and we talked about his research while writing his books. He told me that his son and his fellow combat Marines were a big help with Marine humor, plus that Cody is loosely based on his personal dog that has passed on now. The amount of research he did on the IED detection dogs was unbelievable. Also, many of the unique weapons that Jake uses are real. When you finish his books, Mark includes information about these things.
What will you like? Incredible action, humor, romance, mystery, murder, intrigue, and lots of unique boats/weapons. You will enjoy the humor and banner between Jake and his fellow characters, follow along on his romance with Sarah, walk with him as Cody and he searches for the killer, meeting new characters that work with him, a culinary route around the Keys, and an exceptional ending. Another exciting and emotional trip with two exceptional characters, Jake Wolf and Cody. Don’t forget to mark your calendar as this will be coming to you on March 31, 2021. The amazing, astonishing, and adventurous story will keep you up late into the night. An excellent read!!!
KEY WEST DEAD is the sixth instalment in Mark Nolan’s contemporary, adult JAKE WOLFE military, suspense series focusing on former marine, above Top Secret clandestine Black Ops specialist and attorney Jake Wolfe, and his service dog Cody. KEY WEST DEAD can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story lines is revealed where necessary.
NOTE: KEY WEST DEAD includes scenes of violence that may not be suitable for more sensitve readers.
Told from several third person perspectives including Jake Wolfe and Orion KEY WEST DEAD focuses on the hunt for a homegrown terrorist in Key West Florida. Attending the wedding of a former US Marine, Jake and his girlfriend Sarah, along with friends police detective Terrell Hayes and his wife Alicia, are stunned when the boat, upon which the newly married couple were sailing, explodes killing everyone on board. In a matter of days a series of boat explosions, and a demand for thirty million dollars from a bomber calling himself Orion, finds our hero Jake Wolfe, along with his bomb-sniffing dog Cody, on the hunt for a killer who is targeting the marinas in Key West, Florida. Jake will ‘volunteer’ Cody’s services to sniff out any suspected bombs and IEDs, a job that is about to place Jake and Cody in the direct line of fire.
KEY WEST DEAD is a story of betrayal and revenge, grievance and obsession, desperation and loss. Mark Nolan pulls the reader into an intriguing, intense, tragic and edgy story line of vengeance and retribution.
To say I am obsessed with Jake and Cody would be an understatement. They are, hands down, my favorite literary characters, ever.
I was initially introduced to Jake and Cody back in book one, Dead Lawyers Don’t Lie. I have read every single book since then and have fallen more and more in love with them with every book I read. One of the things I truly love about the Jake Wolfe series is that even with the time that passes between reading books, I never feel lost or like something is missing. Mark Nolan does a wonderful job filling us in on what has happened in the past, and the storyline, in a sense, is a standalone adventure.
Key West Dead has a lot of thrill, mystery, and a little comedy and romance. It definitely keeps you on the edge of your seat, curious as to what is going to happen next, but Cody’s good natured humor keeps it light (and I promise, you will find yourself smiling at times!)
Key West Dead was an amazing mystery set in an amazing location. It will keep you on your toes with action and is a book that should not be passed over!
Key West Dead by Mark Nolan is the sixth book in the Jake Wolfe series, and the action-packed twist and turns of drama continue right where the story of Jake and Cody ended in book five.
I absolutely adore this series, as not only do you get the story of Jake and his comrades, but you get to follow his romance with Sarah and this time they take a trip on a boat to the Florida keys to attend a friends wedding. But in true Jake Wolfe style, he is accompanied by his loyal and trusty best friend Cody.
But of course the trip cannot go according to plan! After all, this is a Jake Wolf story, and from the moment he attends the wedding, he has a bad feeling. A feeling which refuses to leave, and he’s not the only one sensing trouble, Cody too starts picking up on something suspicious.
After the bombing of his friends boat, and the ongoing threats Jake and Cody embark upon another gripping case, and as always, you will not necessarily expect the path it leads down.
Nolan always delivers the perfect blend of a well plotted action story with a side of humour and romance, and I’ve been hooked since book one.
Cody is the mans best friend you have always wanted, and you cannot but help get swept up in the mystery and the non-stop action. A perfectly gripping read which will have you eagerly awaiting the next instalment.
I’d recommend for those who want to get embroiled in a gripping action series which has a smidge of romance and something for everyone.
Since the beginning, I have enjoyed Cody and Jake (mostly Cody!). The setting is dead-on and immerses you into the storyline. If you've ever visited the area of Key West, you'll feel it come to life. Nolan is well-versed in how to drop clues, only to twist them to lead you in another direction when you're sure you have everything aligned to make a guess at the culprit.
As usual, I loved the assorted cast and how I can associate their actions and words with the visual image we're given. They are realistic and relatable - incredibly grateful that they aren't overly written or portrayed as super heroes, but as people who are simply trying to do the right thing.
Full of action, this is a series that I have gotten my "non-reading" teens into. It's exciting and definitely a series that I increasingly enjoy with each new book!
I have volunteered to share my review and all the opinions are 100% my own.
Wow, this is a great story. Mark Nolan is one of the Authors that I look out for, because you know anything he writes is going to be good. Jake Wolfe is such a great character, and his ex-Marine dog Cody is amazing. Such a smart dog. I really enjoyed the tense and interesting plot, and I found myself turning the pages faster and faster to find out what was going to happen. So good!! Jake Wolfe and his girlfriend Sarah Chance were enjoying their time away together in Florida. They were in the Key West to attend the wedding of Jakes friend Harlan and his soon to be bride Aubrey. Orion was angry and he was certainly going to get pay back, many millions if he could make the County pay up. If the County Commissioner didn’t wish to pay, then they would soon find out how angry Orion could be. Jake was horrified when boats began to blow up, and his ex-war dog Cody was quick to indicate the explosions were the result of IED’s. Cody was an IED detector dog in the Marines, so he soon became very valuable in trying to find the next bomb, before someone else was killed. You could easily lose yourself between the pages of this book for many enjoyable hours. Hands down this story is well worth a read.
I have read all the books in the series. I love Jake and of course his 9 Cody. The two get into very scary life and death situations. In this book there is a bomber bombing boats along Key West. The first boat destroyed included two good friends of Jake and his pal Terrell. The rest of the book tells how Jake and the entire Key West Sheriff Dept tries to identify and apprehend the bomber. Jake and Cody are targets and thankfully Cody can smell bombs and warns Jake of the danger. There is lots of action and danger. Thankfully Cody and Jake too are not hurt. I have the next book loaded on my Kindle . Can’t wait to start it!
This is another great read from Mark Nolan! This series is one of my favorites, especially with the absolute love and loyalty between Jake and Cody.
When Jake and his friends' vacation plans are destroyed by an IED, Jake and Cody help search to save more lives. But when the bomber becomes angry that his plans continue to be thwarted he aims his hatred and Jake, Cody, and their loved ones.
Can Jake and Cody find him before he destroys anyone else?
This book is a great addition to the series, in a different locale than we normally find this crime fighting duo. I have volunteered to share my review and all the opinions are 100% my own.
Jake and Cody are back again for another explosive adventure, this time in sunny Florida. Of course, life is never simple for Jake, and what starts with a friend's wedding ends with he and Cody trying to track down a bomber without being caught in the destruction themselves. I love that this book can keep you turning pages, with plenty of action, a little mystery, and some laughs along the way. There were even some sweet moments with Jake and Sarah, but overall Cody is definitely still my favorite. He might be a dog, but he has just as much character and depth as the humans in his life. A brilliant thriller that will keep you up all night reading.
This is an author I have read every one of the books in this series and have enjoyed from the first to this one. I highly suggest reading this series from the beginning to get to know the character Jake and his dog. He is a strong character that I have enjoyed from the first book and is one of my favorites. This is a story that pulled me in from the beginning by the author’s attention to details. The story has a realistic feel and the characters bring the story to life. Jake is back in another suspenseful story. In this story, he plans on attending a wedding in Key West what he doesn’t expect is that someone has a plan to kill the wedding couple. Will he and Cody be able to find this killer before he executes his plan? I really enjoyed this story and what the characters bring to the story. I highly recommend this book and this author.
I wish this series of books could be a movie series. The story sucked me in immediately and it was hard to put it down each evening to get some sleep. Jake, Cody, and Sarah along with Terrell and Alicia didn't know the excitement (or tragedy) they were in for attending a friend's wedding in Florida. Lots of excitement and action with a little down time with friends. The wonderful descriptions of scenery and food made me feel like I was right there with them - and glad I was only reading about the explosions as those were also very explicit (not a complaint). I wish Cody had a bit more dialog. Its always fun to find out what he is thinking. I recommend the entire series. It can be read in order or as stand alones although you would miss some of the background information. Anxiously awaiting the next adventure with Jake and Cody.
I love the Jake and Cody mysteries and this one is explosive. Jake, Sarah and his dog, Cody attend a wedding in Florida. All of his marine buddies are in attendance, but Jake feels like there is something wrong. As they are returning to their boat after the wedding with the bride and groom to ferry them over to their sailboat, Cody is sending signals that something is wrong. Jake wants himself and Cody to check it out but Harlan refuses. When the boat explodes, Jake and Cody start on the trail of the killer. This is another non stop, action packed story that will keep you guessing until the end. If you enjoy gun toting marines with special weapons, you will love Jake Wolfe and Cody. I received this book as an ARC and this is my honest review.
Key West Dead by Mark Nolan a fantastic five-star read. This is number six in the Jake Wolfe series and they could be read as stand-alone but honestly, I would say read them in order as you get the best out of them, you get to know the characters like Jake and Brody who is simply the star of the show to me. The suspense in this story is so tight it will keep you on the ledge, but the suspense isn’t the only part of the story. There is romance and drama and even some funny moments as well, they all make this a compelling and well plotted story. The thing that always strikes my from this author, is the attention to detail, usually when I read about something I know I get put off as they always get something wrong, but this author must spend so long doing research or simply writing what they know, as the detail is so well done.
This was my least favourite book of the series. Gone was the badass fighting Marine with all the secret weapons and backing of the secret government resources. This really was more of a falling in love, starry eyed story with not much intrigue as in the previous books. Sort of feels like it's time for Jake and Cody to retire.
Jake Wolfe and his ex-war dog Cody are back in another of their thrilling adventures and this time, they are in Key West in Florida so that Jake can attend the wedding of a friend, it is a barefoot beach wedding at one of the resorts on the Marina and while Jake is mingling with the other guests and catching up with people, he has a feeling that all is not well, his neck is tingling and the feeling of a premonition of danger, despite the fact that most of the guests are veterans and it is probably one of the safest places in the Keys, but this feeling only intensifies when a drone passes by and looks directly at him, even though this particular hotel has a no fly policy. After the ceremony finishes and the reception is over, Jake and Cody sail the newlyweds to their cruising sloop, however, as they approach it, Cody alerts Jake that he can smell something on the boat, the newlyweds stubbornly don’t allow Jake and Cody to investigate, preferring to set off on their honeymoon instead. Unfortunately, minutes after they set off there is an explosion followed by a ball of flame as the boat blows up in front of Jake. As the authorities arrive and take control of the situation, Jake is struggling with feelings of guilt and remorse and he is blaming himself for not insisting harder on carrying out the check until he sees the same, or very similar drone flying around and this throws him into a rage where he threatens the person behind it and swears revenge.
The next day, all the local news networks are talking about the devastating event and the person who has claimed responsibility for it by sending them the drone footage, as well as their ransom demand for $30 million from Monroe County. Meanwhile, the criminal being discussed is planning their next targets, the timings of them, planning the method of placement and finding out as much as they can about the man who threatened them. Jake is having breakfast with friends and trying to make sense of what happened when Jake receives confirmation that his request to take Cody to check some of the other marinas in the area has been approved and so the pursuit of the bomber commences in earnest. When the group leave, Cody turns up outside the restaurant and so Jake splits off from the others to take him for a walk back to the marina, but just as they are passing the county courthouse, Cody signals that he senses something followed by Jake seeing an individual jumping out of a car and heading away on a bicycle. Jake realises what is about to happen and shouts a warning before firing a gun shot in the air to encourage people to listen and just as the two clear the area and take cover, there is a blast from the abandoned vehicle. Jake goes into marine mode and starts to fight the fires in the immediate area while making sure that people are ok while demanding that someone calls the authorities. When they arrive at the area, he again has to make a statement and he is again annoyed that he wasn’t able to stop it, or protect the people around him, but as he talks it over with people later on, he is even more resolved to help solve the mystery of what is happening.
As the days follow on and more attacks are planned and carried out, the locals and tourists are becoming increasingly worried by the situation, as are the local government, but they are worried about the economic impact it could have on this area which revolves around tourism. Will Jake and Cody be able to figure out who is behind the attacks and why before more innocent lives are lost, or will they be the next victims before they get the chance? This is another thrilling race against time where an ex-marine and ex-war dog take on another criminal with malicious intentions.
Although this is the first book I am reading from the series, I had no trouble following it. This book is the sixth one in the “Jake Wolfe” series, and if all the previous books are exciting, I would love to read it from the beginning. The book is perfect for picking up if you are in the mood for a procedural crime drama. In this book, Jake has to fight a sinister person called Orion, who targets one of Jake’s friends and blows their ship up on their wedding day. The author adds in many moments of action and adventure to keep the story entertaining. One of my favorite moments was when Orion kidnaps Button and holds her hostage. Another exciting moment was the van chase scene. I was wondering how Jake would act in the situation.
Moreover, I also appreciate the author for balancing the action with the drama, as we see Jake and Sarah getting closer. I liked the intimate moments that the two shared. Jake also has some heartwarming moments as he tries to motivate Denny. Similarly, Sarah also spends time with her friends like Alicia.
However, my favorite part of the story was Cody and his relationship with Jake. It is always entertaining reading a novel where an animal is also a central character, particularly in crime fiction. It was interesting to see how Cody helps Jake in his investigations, and I thought the was the highlight of the story.
Overall, “Key West Dead” is a lovely addition to the series and makes me want to read it from the beginning.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
When Jake and Sarah are attending a wedding of an brother in arms, they get more fireworks than the wedding itself. Can Jake find the person blowing up boats or will he kill more people?
Jake and Sarah are attending one of Jake's military buddies wedding and they decide to hire a boat for the weekend, with their trust friend Cody will the trio enjoy a lovely get away or will it end up in disaster.
While in the ceremony they discover that a few of his fellow vets have received death threats and Jake's sense become alert as he feels that something is not right and that he feels something bad is about to happen, but on the way back to the boat they befriend a couple and walk them back to their boat, within minutes the whole atmosphere changes and Jake is drawn into a murder investigation. Can he find out who is blowing up all these boats, can he locate the bombs with his trust bomb dog Cody or will the killer escape.
This is the first story I have read by this author and I loved it, the twists and turners have you wrestling to uncover who the killer and the bomber is with piecing the clues along the way. I loved that the ne character is a dog and a very intelligent dog, the research that must have gone into the book is fascinating and brilliant to understand these brilliant creatures was absolutely amazing.
I loved the character of Jake and the interaction with his friends was a great read, the banter was a great light relief to a hard hitting storyline and with an excellent and well written story draws you further into the story page by page. I can't wait to start this series from the beginning, although this can be read as a stand alone story I would like to get to know where Jake and Cody's bond comes from and how Jake met Sarah and get to understand more that relationship.
WOW- this series just gets better and more addictive with each new release. Key West Dead is the gripping new instalment in the Jake Wolfe series by Mark Nolan. I know I keep saying this, but I really can’t get enough of this series- and I don’t think I’ll ever tire of joining Jake and Cody on one of their exciting ‘adventures’- no pressure, Mr. Nolan, but I hope you’ve got many more exciting adventures for Jake, Cody, and their many ‘friends’ to negotiate, because I have a slight addiction and need a regular ‘fix’ to keep me going- so a regular ‘supply’ for the foreseeable future would be excellent, thanks! 😊 This story could be read as a standalone- but as there are recurring characters, as well as other important details that help to build a bigger picture, I would recommend reading the other books first, before embarking on this adventure as knowing what has happened previously, and how much Jake and Cody have been through together- will greatly enhance your reading experience of this story. This time Jake and Cody are pitted against a psychotic bomber who is hell bent on a demented agenda… and taking out Jake and Cody in a fiery inferno just became his top priority- the perfect ‘icing’ on his deadly plot. Will Jake and Cody manage to outwit their deadly adversary long enough to take him down, as well as keeping their friends safe in the process? This is definitely worth the read to find out!! I could go on and on about every little detail of this fantastic book- but instead I will sign off here so you can grab yourself a copy and dive in asap- highly recommended! I can’t wait to see what Jake and Cody get up to next!
I am once again going to say that so many people have loved this book and this series that I’m sure I can’t say anything new. However, that doesn’t stop me from feeling the same way about the series and about Key West Dead. Jake and Cody are here and now Sarah his veterinarian girlfriend is ensconced right on the yacht with them. I was so jealous I could hardly stand it. A wonderful dog, a handsome guy, and a yacht. Geez. But in this story, there is a lot of action and some awfully hard times for all of them. This is exciting and a cliffhanger. I spent most of my time sitting on the edge of my seat, reading as fast as I could. This book in the series might be my very “favoritest”. Is that a word? Probably not. I've been known to make them up:)
I want to make a comparison here but want to make it 100% clear that Mark Nolan is his own person, and he has his own writing style. But...he is in the class with Robert Parker and John D. MacDonald. Mark Nolan does not write like either of them. He writes like Mark Nolan. But all three authors have a common denominator, a charismatic character. His books are mysteries and full of suspense and yet somehow just as MacDonald and Parker did, there is a certain amount of charm mixed in. Some mix of words that makes the whole story flow. A lot of suspense mixed with a little bit of humor keeping us holding our breath or laughing out loud. I think this is because these three authors knew how to craft and create good characters. Those we fall in love with and hope every time they will be ok. Like living in a movie inside a book.
Don’t miss any of this series. Each book will stand alone but just take my word for it. You need to read them all.
Key West Dead is book 6, the last volume in the Jake Wolfe Novel series. Mark Nolan ends this volume with the words “The End,” so we don’t expect another book in the series will be forthcoming. Key West Dead brings the saga of Jake and his war dog Cody to a satisfying end, but also leaves us with the feeling that the author has another series in the works that has Jake, Cody, Sarah, and their friends as the main characters. Well, at least, I hope that he does because I want to read more of their stories.
Book 5 ends with Jake being disavowed by the P.O.E. T’s, the President’s Operation Emergency Team, a very secret black ops team. They fire him because he disobeyed their orders when he destroyed a biological weapon capable of destroying humankind instead of capturing it for government research. This book opens with Jake and his friends attending the wedding of another marine veteran. After the ceremony, they witness the young couple’s death as their sail boat blows up. A mad bomber who calls himself “Orion” is out to extort millions of dollars from the county for wrongs committed against him. Blowing up boats at random is just Orion’s way of getting their attention.
Jake and Cody come to Orion’s attention when he is seen on the news and on social media swearing that he will hunt him down and bring him to justice. Orion makes repeated attempts to kill Jake, Cody and Sarah who defeat each of those attempts. During their ultimate confrontation.... Go read the book to find out what happens. Better yet, go read the complete series if you haven’t already read volumes 1-5.
Jake Wolfe, Sarah and Cody are at a Key West resort to celebrate a good-friends’ wedding. It is a beautiful celebration and the couple are slipping away to start their honeymoon aboard the Mojo, a 36’ Peterson 328 sloop. The scene is very tranquil and the wedding party wish a bon voyage to the happy couple. Suddenly the boat erupts into a huge explosion and they sink into the sea.
The local psycho nick-named Orion has set off an I.E.D. and enjoys the fireworks. He is sure that Key West and the state of Florida will pay him $33 million dollars to stop the sabotage and destruction. The infrastructure of Key West is also a prime target and Orion has no qualms about the lives he erases nor the people affected.
Jake and another Navy Seal set out to find the bomber and right the injustice. The bomber in turn has taken a vengeful hate for Cody and Jake and decides to target them as part of his campaign. Thanks to Cody his plans are disrupted.
Mark Nolan builds a great deal of tension in this narrative. There are many twists and turns which keeps the reader engaged. I can see a winning pattern to his writing and find myself vested in his characters.
I suggest anyone who wishes to have a little escapism in their lives settle down with one of his books. The experience is very entertaining. 5 stars-C.E. Williams
Welcome to another adventure with Jack and Cody as they attend a wedding the newly married couple are blown up on their boat as they sail away to happiness. Obviously, this action brings our intrepid duo into yet another dangerous and exciting adventure, can they catch the mastermind behind the explosion before they cause any more financial and economical damage to the affluent Florida Keys area?
In taking on the role of investigators Jake not only puts himself in danger but his close friends and loved ones. How can he keep not only himself safe but those close to him as well? The author takes us on another exciting adventure using his knowledge and research to great effect. You can not help feeling the pressure and sharing the emotions that Jake is feeling as you feel you are riding on Jake’s shoulder as a ghost wanting to warn and help him in his endeavors to catch the criminal who is causing mayhem. Jake’s and Cody relationship are expertly described and you can feel the total and utter trust they have in each other, as well as the fact their rely on each other to make their mission a very successful one.
As usual with Jake and Cody their mission is fraught with danger, taking twist and turns following evidence, making for a rip roaring read. Praise for the author in creating yet another excellent story line keeping the characters, both good and evil, fresh with new environments and situations as well as giving substance and believability to the actual events which happen.
Where next for Jake and Cody? I cannot wait to find out!
This sixth book in the Jake Wolfe Series by Mark Nolan finds ex-marine Jake, his veternarian girlfriend Sarah, and of course the ex-military K9 Cody, searching for unexploded bombs as well as the bomber in this suspense-filled action-adventure story that includes murder and kidnapping. Their hunt begins from the very first explosive pages and continues through to the last page. Interspersed amongst all the drama is a developing romance that has its own share of suspense and adventure. Once again the author extols not only the bravery and individual loyalty of the US military, but also the trials and obstacles back home, such as depression and PTSD, that are part of the price of their sacrifice for their service to their country. All of the characters are well known to readers of the series, but the author takes the time to introduce them and their uniquely identifying characteristics as well as their former military nicknames for the benefit of the new readers. As always, the star of the show is the dog Cody who has been trained to detect I.E.D.s and other explosives, but is way smarter than just that training. The author also explains in great detail just how dog handlers and their dogs work together, as well as how they should be approached safely. I look forward to the further adventures of Jake Wolfe. This is a voluntary review of an Advanced Reader Copy of this book from Hidden Gems Books.
Key West Dead is a gripping tale of an ex-Marine and his ex-wardog Cody, as they sniff out clues to stop a rampaging boat bomber in Key West. Jake (Jukebox) Wolfe, in town for the wedding of his ex-military brother Harlan, unwittingly becomes wrapped up in a series of bombings that result in dozens of murders. Jake and his brothers are loyal as they come, and will not rest until bad guy Orion is stopped and brought to justice. He has a keen sense of danger, and catches whiff of small clues before anyone else can. He is smart and dangerous, and will stop at nothing to track down their cunning villain.
This book is pretty well-written, and I appreciated the details that made Jake's history, locale, and boating come to life. One thing I found disheartening was that none of the women in this story pass the Bechdel test. Some of the wives of important people seem like they could be interesting, intelligent characters that could add to this plot (our hero's girlfriend is a veterinarian, for example) but they seem to exist solely to be pretty accessories near their men. I would have liked to see Sarah and Alicia developed a bit more so that the book isn't entirely dominated by men. All in all though, this is a good crime story of cat-and-mouse, and readers of this genre will likely be engrossed in its plot.
Key West Dead is the sixth book in Mark Nolan’s Jake Wolfe series. This book finds Jake and Cody in Key West, Florida and, as the title suggests, people die. There’s a crime to solve, and the stakes are high as the killer continues planting and detonating bombs. Cody is a great character, and this is another story where his talented nose is in high demand. We also see Cody, as well as Jake, dealing with their PTSD as well as the ongoing traumatic events. It doesn’t help that what was meant to be a nice, relaxed holiday has turned into a life-threatening case. It was good to see more of Sarah in this book as well! Although often sent off with friend Alicia while Jake and Cody are investigating, she gets in on the action as well as showing her openness to adventure and skills in handling a boat. For me, this is a four-star book in an enjoyable series. The Florida setting is fun – made me feel like I was on holiday! I’d recommend the series to mystery and crime fans who like canine characters as much as humans.
Key West Dead is the 6th book in the Jake Wolfe series. It centers around the character Jake Wolfe. This book easily stands alone or as part of the series. I have not read the others in the series, yet I had no trouble keeping up with the characters or back stories. I do plan to read the others now as this book was so good. Mark Nolan did a superb job with this book. There were several things I loved about his writing. One, the characters appropriately cursed, and it fit with the characters. However, Mark Nolan didn’t just use the F word or other language. He would describe the language in such a way that you completely understood without being vulgar. The second thing I enjoyed was that there were no descriptive sex scenes. The main character and his girlfriend flirted, and the story alluded to them having sex. But it wasn’t crucial to the story and never went into great detail. This book was a fantastic read. I had trouble putting it down. I highly recommend you take the journey down to Key West and into the life of Jake Wolfe!
Key West Dead (Jake Wolfe Book 6) by Mark Nolan. I LOVE this series! I can't wait for each new one and I might just have a huge crush on Jack Wolfe! You can read these as a standalone but I highly recommend reading them in order just to get the best reading experience. This book finds the gang in Key West for the wedding of friend Harlan who is a Veteran friend so all the guests were mainly vets. When Jack spots a drone around the boats he gets an uneasy feeling so he's on high alert. After the wedding Cody, Jack's retired military dog hits on the boat the newlyweds are getting on he knows somethings up. Things go downhill from there and Jack is determined to find out who is responsible. In this book you get to see more of Jack's relationship with his girlfriend Sarah as they are planning on renting a boat together and living on it. When Jack realizes he's up against a psychotic bomber its a huge rush to find him before its too late for Jack and Cody! Read this book for a can't put down thriller. You won't be disappointed.
Key West Dead is book six in the Jake Wolfe Thriller series and can be read as a standalone. This one is probably my least favorite of the series so far, and feels rushed and not executed as well as the previous books were. It could be that I am used to Jake and Cody now, and predicting what is to come, so it could be a biased focal point for me. This time around, the duo are on a boat in the Keys with long-time girlfriend Sarah when someone decides they want to take out all the military in attendance. Cody is an ex-war dog that can do it all, and this time is no exception, and goes right to work helping Jake discover who is involved and taking down the bad guys. While we still have all of the action, danger, and over the top scenarios, the last two books have also had quite a bit of romance in it as well. This is still a good book to read, just not as interesting to me as the previous ones have been, but hopefully the next one will step back up to the plate. Anyone that is new to the Jake Wolfe Series may love this, as there is a lot to unpack in it, just like the others.
Jake Wolfe, a former Marine, finds himself in Key West attending one of his brothers in arms’ weddings. The wedding gets off without a hitch. It’s the honeymoon that ends abruptly when the boat the two were sailing to the Bahamas blows up right in front of Jake and Cody, a former IED sniffing dog.
Jake soon learns that the bomb that took his friend’s boat is not going to be the only casualty of someone’s messed up idea of blackmail. Orion, the bomber, requests $30 million in Bitcoin from the Monroe County Government, or boats will continue to be rigged with IEDs.
Boats blow up along the coast of the Keys as Jake offers Cody's search skills to the Monroe County Sheriff's Department. Jake and his friend, Terrell, begin to put puzzle pieces together about Orion. They have to figure out the actual reason behind these bombings before Jake, Cody, Terrell, or one of their close friends ends up being a part of Orion’s master plan.
