A biography of the former slave who after escaping to Canada with his family became a well-known minister and active power in the Underground Railroad and served as model for Harriet Beecher Stowe's famous book.
Frances Cavanah (1889-1982) was born in Indiana and attended DePauw University. She wrote many shortstories, articles and textbooks for children. She is also credited with the following books: Boyhood Adventures of Our Presidents, Pocahontas, A Little Girl of Jamestown, Abe Lincoln Got His Chance, Our Country's Freedom, Jenny Lind's America, When Americans Came to New Orleans, We Wanted to be Free, They Lived in the White House and The Truth About the Man Who Sparked the War Between the States.
This book is all about a man named Josiah, Si for short. Si was a slave in the south & was trying to buy his freedom. He earns his money by being a preacher on Sundays. He gets all the money he needs & his owner tells him no. They are able to work things out & he is sent with a pass to get to Kentucky. The title of this book is almost as long as the book it's self. Plus, the whole title summarizes the book. One thing I loved about the Si Character is how positive he was. His whole life was full of tragety & yet he stayed close to God & always hoped for a better future. His character said in the book "We must hope for the future, or we will not go on." I would recommend this book to anyone who likes U.S. History. By: Frances Cavanah 150 Pages
