Hawk Connolly knows Joshua Thornston is their bad guy, but his pack needs an in to get the proof they need. Enter Peter Thornston and his celebutante siblings—pretty faces whose only talents are wearing clothes and being seen. Taking a shot at them in public is the quickest way to get in the door, and Hawk is prepared for everything… except discovering Peter is his mate.
Peter Thornston lives in the shadow of his brother and sister. They are the ones everyone loves, the ones everyone wants to be close to. And he knows his father isn’t exactly a good guy, but Peter never suspects that he is the actual bad guy. When he lands in Hawk’s crosshairs, he starts reevaluating exactly who his father is and whether he can live with it.
When he finds out just how deep the conspiracy goes, he has to choose: his father, or the wolf who pulled the trigger.
I liked this book a teeny bit better than book 1; however, it still felt sort of wonky to me.
The same as with the first book, I didn't find this one very romancey. It felt much more Fated Mates, so instead of them getting to know one another and falling in love, it was very... instant. And them ending up together or not was never really in question.
I liked both MC's and all of the side characters well enough, but I found the layout of the story to be kind of atypical from what I'm used to.
For example, the Big Bad was defeated (a bit too easily IMHO) by around 80'ish percent into the book, instead of closer to the actual end. Then for the last 20 percent of the book, the characters just sort of amble around wrapping things up, which honestly felt like at least 5 or 6 epilogues back to back. It was weird.
The angst was kept to pretty manageable levels, along with the steam, but this installment of the series had a bizarre fascination with Hawk's "knot", which is a werewolf plot point that's always kind of squicked me out.
Overall, I was okay with where the story ended, but other than the next book probably being Hawk's brother Grady's story, I have no idea what's really left to cover in this off-shoot of the Chosen One and Hellhounds universe.
I'd rate it at around 3.5 stars and will continue with the next book, even though neither of these first two books has completely blown me away so far.

Really enjoyed book 2, perhaps more than book 1. It's more of a slow burn, focusing more on the storyline from book 1 with made werewolves and the threat they pose, meaning this can't be read as a standalone. Peter is something other than human so there is no need to hide things from him so it has less angst there too. I'm interested to see where book 3 goes after that epilogue
What can I say? I absolutely LOVED this marvelous, amazing, grab-you-by-the-feels, smoking hot, action packed, emotionally charged, and totally awesome addition to this fantastic series. I can't wait to see what happens next.
Terrific story-line with wonderful characters and lots of action had me thoroughly enjoying this book! This is the next book in the series that picks up right where the first book about Conrad and Ryder left off. The taking down of bad guys behind that story is the focus of this book and I loved the complexity and team work. Hawk and Peter make really good MC's and I so enjoyed their interactions!
We really get to see more of the internal workings of Mason's pack and get a little better feel for the group dynamics. There are some outside the pack support that is crucial to the success and I so enjoyed the pictures that were painted of all the action. The writing flowed and the pacing was really good!
This is book two of the Bodyguard Pack series and it would be best to read in sequence. I am so looking forward to the next book in this series.
I was gifted this book from Gay Romance Reviews and i freely give my honest opinion and review
I enjoy the world these stories take place in and continue to love these characters. This story is taking place at the same time as some events from a couple connected series (Chosen One and Hellhounds). Peter is the best of his family, his siblings aren’t bade but they do the part to be spoiled and carefree while Peter avoids any of the attention and extravagance they love. My only real issue is how Anodo handled the whole mate thing between Hawk and Peter, I know there was the whole apology afterward and what not but I felt it was unnecessary and that it hurt the relationship in the group.
I received a copy of this book and am giving an honest review
The beginning and ending of this was good. Some editing issues, but not bad. But from around 60% til 90% this was like a totally different book. The writing was off, the sex scenes made no sense, and I was lost.
I really wish that there were more stories about other kids, outside of the Jerricks. There could be so many stories from that.
But anyways, this story was about trying to take down one of the people stealing power from kids. If you are lost, this is a part of the chosen one universe and you really need to know about that to understand this world.
I'm glad I read these books, I got to see Viceroy, the hellhound who was skipped in the hellhound series.
I really like this universe so much! Protecting Peter is the second title in the Bodyguard Pack series, set in the same universe as Macy Blake's Chosen One/Hellhound books. You don't have to have read any of those books, but I'd definitely recommend reading Convincing Conrad (the first Bodyguard Pack book) before picking up this one as it links directly.
Taking a sniper shot at your mate (even if it is a ruse) isn't exactly the best way of starting a relationship, but Hawk has a really good reason - Peter's father is a bad, bad man. Of course, Hawk doesn't know he has a mate when he takes the shot, but it does give him the reason to be assigned as Peter's bodyguard, where there's a bit of slow burn 'getting to know you stuff', then bam! Chemistry! Or, well you know...the mating bond. Once the bond is accepted there's nothing allowed to come between Hawk and Peter, but there are always challenges to overcome to win that HEA, and these guys are no different. There are some internal challenges (both men have a bit of emotional baggage, e.g. Peter's lack of self confidence due to living in his siblings' shadows and the residual pain Hawk has from a previous relationship) and some external ones. I loved the surprise at the end when the bad guy is finally dealt with. It really helps cement Peter's place in the pack.
It's great that we still get a good amount of page time with the other pack members - they make for an entertaining cast of side characters. It's also nice to see the characters we engaged with in the previous book flourish in their relationship. I started out really disliking Peter's brother and sister (Paul and Penny). This is a testament to how well they are written: they're superficial airheads who pretty much ignore Peter's wishes at the beginning, but hidden depths become apparent and there's no doubt how much they love Peter by the end.
Protecting Peter has a great storyline with plenty of action, magic, humour and heart. It's a fantastic read that I'd happily pick up again. I do have to say it's not quite perfect and would benefit from another round of edits/proofreading. There isn't a lot of errors - not so many that it spoils the reading experience but just enough to be noticeable. That said, I'm already looking forward to seeing what happens in the next installment. 4.5* rounded up.
A copy was provided by GRR in exchange for an honest review.
I enjoyed watching Hawk and Peter learn to become mates. But, I have questions about things that didn’t really make sense to me. Why didn’t Peter remember the things done to him? It didn’t sound like there was any kind of spell to make him forget, and yet...
How did Lauren hide her true nature for so long? How did Thornton find out about the supernatural? And how did he figure out how to commit the evil that he did? Why didn’t the hellhounds, or any other group, have any idea about the made wolves until recently, if they’ve been around for more than 20 years? And if they had been so successful at staying hidden, why out themselves now?
very good story.. i enjoy this series... it is well written and so many fun thoughts and emotions going on.. the personalities were a lot of fun.. i really liked it and cant wait to see what else goes through
Book 2 {‘Protecting Peter’} is, IMHO a better read than book 1. The characters are more fully developed, the storyline is more clearly delineated, and the writing is smoother. As with book 1, there are a few unexplained/unfinished comments and events in, which ᗷᑌᘜᔕ me endlessly. But overall, an enjoyable read!! There also seems to be a nice little hint as to book 3.
I actually liked this one more then the first book. Well written with nicely developed characters. There were still a few things I did not care for but overall great story. I hope to see more of this series.
This is Hawk and Peter's story and is the second book in the Bodyguard Pack. Please read the first one if you haven't already because this book picks up exactly where Convincing Conrad leaves off. These are fabulous books! These are set in the Chosen One universe but you can read them without having read the others. There are a few minor references and there is a scene towards the end that might not make 100% of sense but it wouldn't detract from the story. I wasn't sure if I would like the twin brother and sister Paul and Penny but they prove that they are not just spoiled rich kids. Peter has always been the quiet sibling and the one who doesn't really enjoy the indulgent lifestyle like they do. Hawk is such a great character too. My heart broke for him and his feelings about his art. I was also glad to see the other guys from Mason's pack again, especially Connie and Conrad. Those two siblings are so strong. And let's not forget T and T! They are so cute. I hope Mason gets his own story here soon. He deserves some happiness too! I am interested to see where the story will go from here with the timing coinciding with the end of the actual Chosen One set. I recommend these books. They are all great reads!
This is book 2 of the Bodyguard Pack series and should be read after book 1, Convincing Conrad. I enjoyed this book well enough and thought it was a nice addition to the series.
Hawk and Peter are both interesting characters but the pacing of their relationship was a bit off for me. It’s a bit of a slow burn until it’s not. There’s a particular scene where Hawk can’t get to Peter and has a complete meltdown, which really came out of no where for me. That being said, I still enjoyed the mates aspect of their relationship and the continuing plotline of the world’s re-emerging magic (thanks to Sawyer and his mates from the Chosen One series).
I love that the MCs spend so much time with the main pack, allowing the reader to get to know these great side characters.
I’m looking forward to book three which I’m hoping tells Grady’s story!
I really love this series. It’s fun, exciting, and full of magic. With each book we uncover more and more surprises and connections, and I enjoyed every bit of it. “It was like he’d been waiting his whole life, never knowing something was missing...” Peter and Hawk are fantastic. Their stories hurt my heart but their connection, gah, so passionate and comforting. I felt their pull, their love and their struggles. I wish I could be part of Mason’s pack and this world. It makes me want to dive in and never leave.
This second installment of the Bodyguard Pack series takes place directly after the first, and it’s best read in order. This book is also part of Macy Blake’s larger Chosen One universe, though it’s set apart. While I think it would be helpful to have read Blake’s books to fully understand this series, it’s not entirely necessary. Drake does a good job of giving all the pertinent information needed.
There’s a lot going on in this book, because not only do we have the mate pull between Peter and Hawk, but there’s also several larger plot points that come to fruition. We know just how bad Joshua Thornston is, and we get to see the conclusion of that plot point. But also there are more secrets embedded in the tale. Peter’s true heritage comes out, and we find him stepping into a role he never imagined. And Hawk has secrets all his own, as well as a troubled past he’s still healing from.
I enjoyed this second offering in this series even more than the first book. Part of that comes from being familiar with the universe and most of the players. The other comes from liking both MCs immediately.
Hawk, who we got to know a little in book one, has a background we don’t know about yet other than that it was negative. Peter is the youngest son of one of the villains from book one. It’s a very interesting dynamic that is set up here. The writing is crisp and the storytelling kept me engaged the whole time. The book is a quick read and while there are some heart wrenching moments I think it is pretty low angst.
Hawk comes across as sensitive, caring, empathetic and damaged. Peter comes off as sweet, caring, concerned and questioning. His love for his siblings, who I initially feared were going to be nothing but stereotypes, was heartwarming. There were fun secondary characters and I loved Penny’s fierceness and Laurel’s caring. It was also nice to see reference to some familiar character’s from Macy Blake’s Chosen One universe.
There are places I would have liked some more depth and explanation. I still don’t feel like I got enough information about the villain, what was happening or how it was possible. I don’t know if that will be further explained in future books but I was still left feeling like I was missing pieces of the story. The same is true of Hawk’s background with his ex and his parents. Both things seem especially relevant given how the book ends.
But I’m definitely hooked and I hope we don’t have to wait long for book three!
**I voluntarily read an arc and this is my unbiased opinion.**
I'm thoroughly glad I decided to continue with this series after the first of the books I was only in like, not love with. This one gave me what the other was missing so to speak. There's a bit more drama and a bit more steam. I also really liked Peter. He was sweet and considered himself not interesting compared to his siblings. Their heritage so to speak was also intriguing. I desperately wanted to know what they were other than human.
I also liked Hawk. He was protective and cared deeply about his brothers. He crafted secret art and showed no one. That is until Peter came into his life. Peter who reminded him of an angel. It was cute.
My favorite part of this book however wasn't even about the two MCs. It was how a certain werewolf finally admitted to a certain human how they felt. Huge heart eyes here people. And hearing the boys call him daddy, just precious and the icing on the cake.
Protecting Peter by Casey Drake is the second book in tge Bodyguard Pack series and is a paranormal m/m romance. It is exciting, suspenseful, and had my full attention from tge start. Shifters, magic and other paranormal elements add to the draw of the world found within these pages. I found I had so much fun lgollowing these characters in their story. I can not wait to dive into more.
☆I was able to read an advanced copy of this title and am reviewing voluntarily and honestly my own thoughts, opinion and reactions based on that copy.☆
This is the second book in the Bodyguard Pack series. I would recommend reading Convincing Conrad first, to get a better understanding of what’s already happened.
Hawk and Peter had a slow burn romance. Their connection was electric - it hummed through the pages.
There was plenty of mystery surrounding Peter and his siblings and what they were.
I’m eager to read Mason’s story but I’m guessing Grady is going to be next.
*I voluntarily read this book. All opinions stated are solely my own and no one else's*
Following up directly from where the last book ended, this book starts as the Pack makes a move against the family that seems to be behind all of the problems with fake wolves going on. This involves targetting the adult children of a sketchy businessman to become their bodyguards. Expecting to be involved with spoiled rich brats that are potentially just as culpable as their father, the Pack is surprised to find that the kids are not like their public personas and more may be going on than was first seen.
Hawk is a bit conflicted in this as he is the one who fires the shots that start everything in this book. As he gets closer to Peter he feels guilty over those actions, regardless to how necessary they were. But as he gets close to Peter is also becomes clear that there is more going on with this family and the connection to missing supernatural children is even more key than first thought.
Peter doesn't really fit in with his family and when he meets Hawk and the Pack he is surprised to feel like he fits in there. There are clearly odd things going on as he gets close to Hawk, and also odd things starting to come up about his own father and family. Soon Peter has to make a choice about where he wants to be and who he wants to be as his entire life changes.
This book once again connects to the Chosen One series by Macy Blake with a bit of a spoiler involved into the course of the book as well. In fact, while the story was good, it sort of had the climax at an odd point. After things seemed resolved there was still lots more story which was more connected to the events of the other series, and sort of felt like it didn't fit in. It also dragged out the bit with Hawk and Peter. But beyond that it was fairly interesting and brought about a conclusion to the events that started in the first book, while introducing a new direction for the story to continue on in subsequent books.
This is book 2 in this series which has an overarching storyline so I recommend reading in order. Also this book takes place in the Macy Blake "Chosen One" universe and I recommend reading those books before this series.
I found this book to be really good. I liked how chaotic it felt which I found to be realistic. I also really enjoyed the main storyline. A few things continue to remain a mystery but I also thought that made sense for this story. I really appreciate that the first 2 books featured introducing people to the magical world who don't know about this magical world which I feel is unrepresented.
Overall, this was a good addition to this series and I can't wait to see what happens next.
Hawk was the Beta of the pack. Or so it was claimed in a meeting with Thornston. However Hawk was almost too mild a character, I expected that he would have been more assertive, especially because of what he went through as a teen, and how he fought for his brothers.
Peter on the other hand, despite being the baby of the family, wasnt a push over or spoiled brat. He stood up for what he believed and what he thought was right. He read a room and people.
As a couple I believe the characters worked. Especially as Hawk saw Peters full potential long before Peter or his siblings ever did.
I enjoyed the first so much, but there was just something .... I did enjoy the story, but it slightly missed the mark for me
I enjoyed this book. It was well written and had enough twists and turns to keep me interested. However, I do believe that it would have been immensely better if I had read the first in the series. You definitely don’t have to. The book is written with enough information that the storyline is complete. But many of the references and conversations were focused on events from the first book and I think having the background knowledge from the first book would have been helpful. These thoughts are my own, unbiased and honest, written after reading an arc of the book.
I am really enjoying this series, to get the most enjoyment I recommend reading the books in order so start with Convincing Conrad.
Peter is the least in your face of the three Thornston siblings, he would describe himself as a bit of a wallflower in comparison, The attraction between him and Hawk was instant, but they have a few hurdles between them (taking a shot at Peter, Hawk). I believe this is a action packed, simmering passion filled, slow burn story that is so well written, within the same world as Macy Blake’s The Chosen One, not that you need to read those to read this series, but I would. I can’t wait to read more and for the rest of this pack to find their mates
I love the world ms Drake is building with this series. Protecting peter is more world building than romance. An explanation of why Mason didn’t want pack members to date/mate. I don’t like it but I understand once it’s explained. Hawke and Peter are perfect for each other. Peter has a hidden fierceness that compensates for Hawke’s lack of confidence. I love Peter’s relationship with his siblings. They were better people than I thought. The author creates a mystery about the darker side of this magical world. Who is involved? How was the bad thing accomplished? I look forward to the next book to see how it expands further.
Peter is not what his appearance would have people think. Hawk has found his place in Mason's pack and has a good life. Then he sees Peter and realizes that he might have just found his mate. As these two, along with Peter's siblings and the pack, figure out what Peter's father is planning, Peter and Hawk have to figure out their relationship and secrets that were unknown to them. You will find yourself laughing and fanning yourself with this story. I cannot wait to find out more and see others get their HEA.
What would you do if you found out that your father was a real bad guy and your fated mate was the person who was going to take him down? This is the dilemma at the heart of the second volume in what is turning out to be a favorite series. As in the previous volume, the characters are all interesting and well developed, the excitement/thriller aspect is well integrated with the romance and the romance itself feels right and very hot. Glad to see our two guys from book one finally get some happiness and I look forward to as many more volumes in this series as the author would like to write.
Peter is entangled in a plot to get to his father who was involved with Conrad's story from book 1, Hawk is put on protection detail to find any clues to help but doesn't count on his attraction to Peter. The relationship is solidly built and explored emotions wise, a few road bumps along the way which could disrupt things. Some shocking revelations and intrigue with a very satisfactory ending with possible hints at the next story. It was sad at times when loyalty was questioned and answers revealed but everyone found their place in the world.
Waited anxiously for this series and it was well worth the wait and read! I could not put it down with the suspense of learning that Peters dad was another of the mastermind behind all of the kidnapping. Hawk and Peter mated life experienced a few hiccups along the way but their strong love for each other only grew stronger. I recommend this book by Casey Drake, you will not be disappointed.
