Game life is good... when nobody is bothering you.
With Donald and his friends having moved into the all-expenses-paid, plush suite within the DSR Corporation’s headquarters along with several other beta testers, their lives have certainly taken a turn for the better.
Well, except for Donald’s love life. It turns out his girlfriend Rosie has been cheating on him while also playing without him and behind his back. Double ouch. If that wasn’t bad enough, an old flame of his is he turned down when reunited is now taking potshots at him at every opportunity. At least he has his friends to help him through it.
Having a barrel full of laughs while playing games with your friends is a surefire way to get over a girl, right?
Speaking of, who knew becoming the Duke of Everhein would provide such lucrative bonuses and quests so early on in the game? Since Donald decided to save the kobolds instead of killing them, he is one step closer to clearing out the Glade of the various inhabiting clans. The question is, will any other encounter go as smoothly, or will there be some hiccups along the way?
There is some good news though. Once Donald and his friends have all named their new AI’s, they will be able to summon them into the realm of Orbis as familiars. There’s a catch, however. They have no idea what the creatures will be.
First, my review: “This was a fun book. I am glad that I read it. You should try it too.”
Second, I am not a bot...at least I don’t think I am. Yes this is copy pasta (just learned that term, so fun!) simply because I feel like any book I read deserves acknowledgement but at the same time my feelings on reviews conflict with the normal review process.
I enjoyed this book, so my goal is to promote it and help the author. If you are a potential reader, just stop reading now and take the above as all you need to know. I am not going to share my reasoning, thoughts on the book, or any opinions that would influence your decision to read it. It is my opinion that Art needs to be experienced at an individual level. You are the only one that can determine what you like and don’t like. Don’t let others make that decision for you. You should definitely read the book and completely ignore all of the reviews. Or not if you don’t think this book is for you. That choice is all yours and the beauty of art appreciation. You are a much better judge of what you will like than anyone here.
If you are a member of the IAK Guild (thanks, Jason) or part of the review police, feel free to criticize me and challenge my philosophy on reviewing art. I think we all love a good debate. The forums are open and I welcome your comments. I was wrong in my previous request to get you to stop. Your blatant disregard for that request has led to some fun discussions. Growth is important for us all.
I had the opportunity to listen to the publisher's pack through Audible.
First: Todd Haberkorn is an awesome narrator. Male voices. Female voices. Accents. Wow! He could make a bad book good, but this is a good book so he made it pop off the virtual page.
Second: It was amusing that this novel was written with a lot of what I consider British English (he's from Canada and now lives in Australia) but the accent of the narrator for the MC was American. However, having lived in Australia in the past, I had no problem changing gears on "boot" for trunk, "mates" for pals, etc.
This review is for the second book in the publisher's pack.
As with book one, it is well plotted. Vivid characters. Action, adventure, a backstory with more depth than any other Lit-RPG I've ever read. Humor. I like the MC and all the supporting cast of characters. The baddies are both complex and there's more going on behind the scenes with at least one of them than we know at present from the breadcrumbs being dropped.
This is a bifurcated story: life IRL and life in the game where things are becoming more and more real.
Highly recommended. Even for folks who don't play RPG (tabletop or online).
Liked it so well I listened to the publisher's pack combo twice. That's saying something!
Sad that the rest of the series isn't available in Audible.
This book was a worthy, enjoyable sequel to the first and I absolutely cannot wait to continue the story in book 3. My only complaint is that it ends with a cliffhanger and, though the Kindle version of book 3 is available, the Audible version is not even available for pre-order. I need the Audible version to continue due to my poor vision (I listen and read along with or without Whispersync), but I will be impatiently waiting, because this series is definitely worth it!
I am loving this world and the real world sub stories especially.since this is only derricks 2nd book.the only issue is there are so many names of npcs in the book you loose track of who is who
The first book was not bad at all. Was formulaic but had some interesting mechanics and was overall fun. The second book however, is just trite and banal. The dialogue felt like a script that was being read. DNF
