—CONCLUSION:
i don't write reviews, i don't think i am capable of even properly analyzing a book to then decide on its numerical value out of five. but i have things to say.
when i first read ghg, majority of my notes were just me screaming at the sheer unfortunateness of literally everything (mostly done with tears in my eyes as well) or highlighting every time ML appeared. i didn't even start ghg because of the fact it's a danmei/has a romance sub-plot, i'm here for the horror!!! and horror it showed me!!! also wow was the romance equally as horrific and tragic!!!
MAIN CHARACTER bai liu as an mc is one of the more unique mc's i have read in webnovels. i've had my fair share of the typical #mastermanipulator3000 or the doormat mcs because they swear on showing kindness to everyone, and bai liu is both, but in his own unique way. well, he's moreso manipulator than he is a kind mc. he's hella calculating, self-serving, and ruthless. he focuses on monetary value and benefits, leading him to essentially curating who he keeps close. bai liu says he simply strikes up deals with people because of value and nothing else, but his actions show another layer because its that meticulousness that really makes him deeply care for those he sees potential in!! him and another character, a younger girl, have my favourite dynamic in the entire novel. you really see his way of caring for people through her. (very amusing for a 9 year old to tell a 24 year old NOT to sacrifice himself). its this exact support system he made that this novel actively shows you its HOW he doesn't fall to complete moral evil or even apathy. i need to pick his brain apart i fear
PACING NOW IF YOU DON'T LIKE SLOWER PACING AND LONG ARCS... this may not be for you. even as someone whose been reading webnovels for a couple of years now, these arcs are LONG. which is somewhat understandable due to the nature of its genre requiring quite a bit of world-building and or needing to provide further commentary on rather meta concepts. ghg quite literally has an arc dedicated to the question: "what makes a human, human?" (ice age arc was quite slow in pace for this reason). furthermore, some really can just feel like a struggle up against a high hill in the same way sisyphus does. for example, the forest frontier arc. that felt like fifteen years. despite this, the arcs that are good are really good, it's very clear seeing this in the second arc. really blew my mind and hooked me in. a personal anecdote i suppose: i had no access to wifi on a cruise last year, so i decided to pick up ghg again which led to me going over the rose factory causing me to absolutely bawl my eyes out. it was so emotionally draining, but the expansion of the interpersonal relationships and their impact on mc made it one of my favourite arcs. also REALLY good quotes. i still feel ill thinking about it. a common sentiment i've heard is the pacing in the last 100 chapters was completely off the rails which i agree. the ending felt rather rushed as well. i won't say much but there definitely could have been a lot more done with it.
MAIN PAIRING if i could attach a tag to the main couple, i would say "hurt and 90% no comfort and 10% maaaaaybe comfort." god, i love them??? i hate them??? theyre so tragic??? theyre so fated??? they make me want to rip my hair out??!! man do i just love a couple that brings out each others fondness in such a cruel environment and also are kind of each others downfall(ish. cant say much or the spoilers will come after me). i really do like the fact the romance was secondary, it made every encounter all the more precious and if it was an angsty chapter (or even arc), it was all the more painful instead. really interesting dynamic between the ml and... himself? but also not himself? can't say anything more since it's spoilers but :) for what little romantic scenes you get in consistency, bai liu's connection with the side cast whether friend or foe make up for it! spoiler:
WRITING STYLE the writing style itself was pretty good. occasionally, the prose would irk me a bit, such as how dialogue can be structured like: [character name here:] ? [character name here]: ? [character name here]: ... that felt a bit gimmicky, but i don't harp on it majorly as it could just come down to personal preference. sometimes it can even feel padded. the descriptions of certain monsters and settings can be incredibly grotesque, some arcs i just couldn't eat anything while reading because of how disturbing it'd be. but oh well! that happens when you read a survival horror web novel! not only will ghg psychologically torture you but also make you visualize the absolute horrific physical surroundings the cast must fight for their lives in next! isn't that just oh so fun.
ghg isn't a simple read. it asks for the reader for active engagement in its story, its morals, and its characters. especially bai liu, if the reader cannot pick up the nuance on his character then the rest of the webnovel is going to be misconstrued and hard to maintain interest in. additionally i've found myself struggling to grasp the sheer logic of some solutions, potentially due to the novel's usage of deux ex machina over... and over... and over again. because of this, i'd say it's not for everyone. it's good, like really good, but the cost of feeling invested is definitely high.
i really did love this webnovel though. one of my favourites if you couldn't tell :)
If you like horror tropes, game-style arcs, mystery, slow SLOW burn, some angst, a big cast with complex backstory that develops kind of slow and each at a time, this novel might just be the thing for you.
If you want romance to be the main focus and not a kind of subplot that affects the main plot, a romance that you see since the start and all its development, a story that doesn't stop what it's doing for some long flashback, smut, this novel is definitely not what you are looking for.
I really, really enjoyed this novel! But I don't think many danmei romance readers would like it as much. The romance is there, it’s painful, it’s relevant to the main plot, but it’s not the main focus. It doesn’t start right away; instead, it develops through multiple flashbacks, which can make it feel like it came out of nowhere. Counterpoint: love-at-first-sight vibes!
Conclusion: If you’re looking for pure romance, you won’t find it here. But if you want to see the MC slowly accepting himself and experiencing that ‘broken people healing each other’ kind of story, you will.
(Please note that the English translation for the novel is not fully translated yet)
My god…I felt like I became high (Did in fact) because after you start this novel, YOU ABSOLUTELY CAN’T PUT IT DOWN (I ruined my own life by staying until 4am reading this) The main protagonist Bai Liu (白柳) is introduced as a money grubber laid off worker, that had a desire for money so strong he entered a horror game, the novel starts off slow by showing us how this fella is ABSOLUTELY RECKLESS in the instances!! I enjoyed reading how MANY INSANE methods this guy can come up with (Very cost-effective too) to pass the instances, and his development from someone who only values money to someone capable of love is absolutely precious to me. It’s also a very refreshing concept of seeing Old you vs Present you kind of concept? I’m not sure how to put it but yea.
What when well in this novel: The side characters in this novel are to DIE for everyone has a unique story and good background to support their desire in the horror game (Fyi you can trigger going into the game by having a very strong desire) and the main group all possess strong loyalty with our MC, Lu YiZhan (陆驿站)our MC’s best friend is my favourite from all of these side characters…because HE LITERALLY WENT TO LENGTHS TO ENSURE THAT OUT MC HERE ISNT DOOM BY NARRATIVE AAAAAAAAA and he treats him like his child 😭💖
-THE INSTANCES!!! HOLY COW the main reason I had so much trouble putting down this book was because of the instances!!! they all had very creative ways to build up the main plot of this novel! From the mysteries behind the MC’s and ML’s past and to the other side characters past!!
-As much as i hate to say it this novel has a very well written antagonist, aka The Evil god, Or like Bai Liu (6) (白六)from the Original timeline (yes this novel has timelines) YOU FEEL ABSOLUTELY NO REMORSE on wanting to kill this man BECAUSE HE IS JUST THAT BAD, LIKE HE TORTURED OUR MC IN NOT ONE BUT AT LEAST 3 INSTANCES!!! in a nutshell he is just our MC that doesn’t possess a soul.
Things that can be improved:
-Really wished there were at least…AT LEAST 50 more chapters to give this novel a proper closure it was really good until the last few instances whereby the chapters just got shorter and shorter? And after building up Daniel for so long 壶鱼辣椒老师just had him brutally kill the Wandering circus members in the 2nd last instance and have him killed by Bai Liu irl which is a little rushed :( and the final duel between our MC and the evil god was also very much rushed, like…wdym he killed him to ascend to god hood and erase his wrong doings in a span of 2 chapters ;-;
-THE ML!!! Omg as much as I don’t wanna talk abt him (PS I LOVE THE COUPLE VERY MUCH BUT I JUST CANT WRAP MY HEAD AROUND PROPERLY WITH HIS BACKSTORY!!!) I was a little confused with Tawil (Soul) and Spades (Body) for Xie Ta our lovely ML there were multiple times that i was a little confused with the complex mechanics when it came to this character like how did Spades possess the same soul as Tawil when Tawil erased his existence irl?? It took me to grow more brain cells for this character. But all and all at the end of the day he’s very pretty and devoted to our MC so I will not complain 😭🫶

Listen, I know I'm not done with this, but this is such a staple of my 2025 reading year that I want it logged for this year - and this is MY Goodreads so I can do what I want.
In 2025 I got though arc 6 which is about 2,200 pages. Here are mini reviews for each arc:
Arc 1 - The Siren Town
This remains one of my favorite arcs. I just absolutely loved being in Bai Liu's head and getting to know him as a character - I really wish we got more solo games tbh! I also thought this was definitely one of the spookiest arcs so far. The story was so interesting, we really got to see Bai Liu shine, and of course it kicked off such an insane and amazing story, ending with the intro of our beautiful Tawil <3
Arc 2 - Burst last Train
Definitely not as good as the siren town but I am definitely more of a story based horror game lover so a completely action based one wasn't as fun to read about. But, obviously, we meet Mu Sicheng in this arc who is an absolute love! Him and Bai Liu working together is one of my fave things
Arc 3 - Loving Welfare Home
This arc was LOOOOONG like double the length of the previous 2, but it also gave SO MUCH lore that is SO important for the rest of the story - every arc from here on out somehow connects back to this and Bai Liu's past. This has a more story based plot which I preferred but I will say this one i started to feel the repetition just a bit with how Bai Liu is constantly at a fraction of a health point and an F rank and is still somehow stronger than EVERYONE else. BUT i adore him so I guess it's fine
(Department of heresy "arc")
This is the short interlude between the orphanage incident and the rose Factory. Honestly I thought this was going to just be filler or giving us set up for the rose Factory which it was but it also gave us a lot of lore that I was not expecting for them to drop in this part - plus we meet Tang Erda my loveeee. I love that the story is getting so much deeper and more complex and very meta
Arc 4 - The rose Factory
God this one was SO LONG it took me forever to read through. It was good and especially the ending got CRAZY but this was the first one that definitely dragggggged. But I feel like it set up so much as has put us at such an interesting place in the story!
Arc 5 - Ice Age Arc
the "reality" section before this arc started was a bit long and dry, but this arc was REALLY good! My favorite movie of all time is "the Thing" and this arc was definitely inspired by that story. It was also a perfect mix of spooky, psychological, puzzles, and then also character development and plot development. I'm so excited that we finally got to see Spaces in action!!'
Arc 6 - Dense Forest Frontier
I LOVEDDD this arc omg this is where the romance really begins and we get SO much information. Also the amount of quotes I was highlighting was crazy - I can't wait to see where this goes next after all we learned/discussed during this arc. But this was fun, funny, a little spooky, lots of suspense and I was on the edge of my seat for most of it. Overall this was a great arc
Overall so far:
I LOVE this story. For each review, it might seem strange that I'm giving it 5/5 stars because there were some individual arcs I didn't love/found quite tedious, but this story as a whole is just so incredibly intertwined and complex, and things build on each other so much. The arcs I didn't love when I first read turned out to be so important and, looking back, I enjoy them a lot more.
Bai Liu is absolutely one of my top favorite danmei (and maybe just book in general??) main characters of all time. I love how smart and crazy and flawed he is but also his inexplicable charm that he can pull in both characters in the story but also us readers. on paper he is truly kind of evil, but in my heart he's just a little guy who deserves the world so ig it's okay if he destroys things along the way.
I can't wait to continue this story in 2026 and learn more about Tawil/Spades, Bai Liu, and our little circus of misfits!!

Hey so...I've been crying for the past hour and a half 👍🏻 but at least I finished it after more than a week
GHG +Thriller Trainee were definitely the danmei I most wanted to read and boy, was it worth it. But if I had to compare, I think Thriller Trainee was a little better - from certain points of view. Now before you come at me with forks, let me explain.
The plot itself was beautifully written. If you're a fan of unlimited flow, like I am, you're definitely gonna like this. Bai Liu was a likable character - not a goody two shoes, not evil either. He was the perfect mix of a good guy who will use you shamelessly but he won't lie about it.
At first you won't understand him, but as the novel goes on you'll finally see that beneath all that scheming is just a boy who wanted to be loved.
I also loved the found family aspects of it. The Wandering Circus were the perfect team of misfits and they were hilarious together. Mu Sicheng, Mu Ke, Liu Jiayi and Tang Erda - I loved every single one of them and they deserve all the good things in the world. Lu Yizhan and Fang Dian as well. The others...I couldn't care less about.
As for our ML, whose identity is kind of a spoiler...He's my favourite character. I don't think I need to say anymore.
As for the relationship between our MC and ML...I've never read a more bittersweet love story in my entire life. So many sacrifices were made, their story was so heartbreaking, I cried multiple times because of them. Unfortunately, the ML doesn't appear much in the beginning and this is a long novel, so this saddened me.
The unlimited flow part of it was also very entertaining, I couldn't put it down although I told my friend multiple times that I will go to sleep and I still ended up sleeping at 2am (right now it's also 2am haha).
Now........the aspects I didn't like:
- It was way too long. As in... unnecessarily long. I don't particularly mind long novels (though they wouldn't be my first choice unless I'm mentally prepared) but I feel like there were certain parts that could be way shorter.
- Unnecessary arcs - reading this I could tell you sincerely that there were at least 3-4 arcs that could easily be cut off and you won't even notice they're gone.
- Related to the last point - the UNGODLY amount of NPCs and side characters. I DO NOT CARE ABOUT NPC NUMBER 6165. Can we move on? Why do I have to know their story only for them to appear in one arc and then be gone? It made certain arcs feel way too long and unfortunately it did take a bit of my enjoyment
- Usually I prefer a more romantic story or at least a story in which both the MC and the ML appear often together - if they're the type to do bad things together, that's even better. Here for the first few arcs (which again, we're talking about thousands of pages, not just 300) we barely got a glimpse of him once every 400 pages and then it's just for a short scene. The author did set up for him to appear more often later, but it did take some suffering to get there. So if you're not reading this for the romance plot only, you'll be fine. I was a bit frustrated, ngl.
- And the last point is the translation - I hate MTL, that's what I wanna tell you. The chapters that were translated? I was hooked, didn't skim through it. But when I was past that point, it was almost unbearable. Still bearable but my brain cells had to work over time for sure. I definitely would recommend waiting for the translation to be finished.
All in all, this is gonna be my personality for a month afterwards. Although it had both ups and downs (not shocking, this is a 500+ chapter novel), it will definitely stay with me for a long time and I don't think I'll ever fully recover from it.
Please be aware that this story is still ongoing as of writing this review.
I love this story to death! This is an unlimited flow/horror/survival novel. However, the characters make this story great. The MC and ML are well written, but I'm talking about the supporting characters. They have great characters development and they're realistic with flaws and strengths. It is wonderfully paced so the adventure or suspense parts read faster. There is a plot but it is an unlimited flow so it is very loose. However, each game instances are complete and well written.
The Children's Welfare Home and Love Welfare Institute game instances are perfect. Liu Huai...
I’m tired of Bai Liu being the invincible MC who’s always a thousand steps ahead of everyone. At this point, it feels like I’m just reading the same arcs on repeat. I read and loved Kaleidoscope of Death, so I thought this book would be on the same level—or even better. Sadly, I was mistaken. I’m dropping it at 42%, right after the Ice Age arc.
i jumped into this completely clueless — didn’t read the summary, didn’t check spoilers, just knew the name “mu sicheng” — and somehow that blind leap became one of my best reading choices this year.
the chapter count looked terrifying at first, but the pacing makes it fly. i finished it in a little over a month because every arc had something gripping going on. no draggy stretches, no filler, just consistently solid storytelling.
bai liu is such a standout lead — sharp, calculating, unbothered in the funniest ways, but also carrying a kind of loneliness that hits hard when the story finally unfolds. i loved how the novel keeps dropping pieces early on that only make sense much later; everything connects with purpose.
the worldbuilding is insanely detailed. the game mechanics are wild, creative, and genuinely clever. romance exists, but it’s on the slowest of slow simmers — if you’re expecting heavy early romance, this won’t give you that. but the emotional payoff later makes sense once you understand the characters’ circumstances.
the ml barely shows up in the beginning, but that absence is intentional and meaningful. once the bigger picture is revealed, their dynamic gets so much weight.
bai liu’s tactics are some of the most satisfying things i’ve read in unlimited flow. he’s not just relying on himself — his strength comes from how he uses, guides, and trusts his teammates. each character has their own voice, motivations, flaws. even minor characters feel like real people with their own stories instead of props for the mc.
and the found family aspect? genuinely beautiful. the wandering circus stole my whole heart. their bickering, their chaotic teamwork, the way they slowly shift from “who is this guy” to “we will die for our president without hesitation” — i got so attached to them it’s embarrassing. i cried for them more than once.
this book really values all forms of love — friendship, loyalty, family, bonds formed under pressure — and it shows how love can be both a strength and a wound. the author doesn’t shy away from the painful side of it, and that’s part of why the emotional moments land so well.
it’s definitely a slow build, especially in the beginning, but the payoff hits like a truck once everything starts coming together.
in the end, i got hit with tragedy, found family, insane plot twists, and a story that sticks with you long after you’re done. ghg is honestly a gem in the unlimited flow genre, and i’m so glad i picked it up.
I was quite interested in this book due to the very good reviews, but the first arc bored me, and I don't have enough free time to waste on a 1 million-word book. My main complaint? The main character. I love clever characters! But he's annoyingly perfect. Everything he does is incredible, his skills are extraordinary, he solves puzzles no one has been able to solve... I didn't feel any emotion during the story.
