Athena Whiteridge was born into a powerful prophecy, with her brothers, Anders and Atlas. Together, they form the Triad. Set to rule as the first female Alpha of her pack, this wolf has a more than enough responsibility placed before her, along with the ability to manifest fire, and shift into more than a mere wolf...
On a night out to investigate missing supernaturals, Athena is rendered dumbstruck by an unsuspecting human, Kalen Ryan. All her strength and skills can't save her from falling for him and the bond. Except—wolves don't take humans mates. Without understanding their intense connection, the pair leave club Zephyr and attempt to bring Kalen into the Unseen.
Forced to face a council of leaders and her family, Athena must explain how Kalen is beyond the Barrier and in their world.
In attempts to fend off concerns—Athena uncovers her father, Cyrus’s deceit and treachery that runs deeper than she believed possible.
The trouble is only beginning. . .
Join the Whiteridges, as they navigate betrayal, love, and battle an ancient evil in a race to save humanity and the Unseen.
Working at her family’s business by daylight--she writes and runs her own indie publishing company, Lake Country Press all other hours of the day. She’s blogged and been published in She. magazine. Triad is her debut paranormal romance novel, which is now accompanied by sequel, Equinox. Fate of the Damned will be her junior book!
She makes her home in Wisconsin with her husband, Bryan, and their amazing daughter, despite having a deep love of tropical weather.
When she's not reading a manuscript, book, or writing her own, you can find her in a bathtub, hanging in a coffeeshop, buying too many books, or enjoying a craft beer.
Triad follows Athena Whiteridge and her brothers, supernatural siblings charged with protecting the human and supernatural world. One night on patrol, Athena meets Kalen, a human and her mate. Instantly aware of the strong bond, Kalen goes with Athena and her brothers back to the Unseen and must deal with the ramifications of taking a human mate – something that is unheard of.
While dealing with her new role as a mate, Athena must also juggle being the Alpha, a daughter, a sister, and a leader to her people. Plus, supernaturals and humans have gone missing, and there are rumors that an ancient enemy has resurfaced. Athena determines to do whatever it takes to solve this mystery, protect her people, and embrace the role she is destined for.
I love Athena! Fierce, loyal, proud, and strong, Athena, or Thea, is the epitome of an Alpha, and I loved her character growth throughout the story. She is a natural leader, and her ability to think of the big picture while dealing with endless day-to-day pressures is amazing. I love her fierce and fiery spirit, her honorable intentions, and her immense loyalty to those she loves. Bold, self-assured, and valiant, Athena goes through so much in the story, from love to loss to heartache, and her story is fantastic!
One of my favorite parts of the novel is the fantastic sibling relationship. Athena and her brothers Anders and Atlas are the Triad, and they are destined for greatness. This puts a lot of pressure on the trio, but they manage it with maturity and determination while still embracing the lighter and less stressful parts of life. Their easy banter, teasing, and tendency to annoy each other are so realistic and show a long and strong bond. I love that Athena’s family life is filled with love and respect, and I love how she and her brothers work together as a unified team. Even when the siblings don’t agree, they always support each other and have each other’s backs. One’s weakness is the other’s strength. Their personalities are distinct and unique, and they complement each other well.
And then there’s Kalen. Sweet, sweet Kalen. I think he’s my favorite character in the novel. Kind, compassionate, creative, and really introspective, Kalen isn’t your typical alpha male love interest. The man is smart, caring, gorgeous, and wonderfully hunky – what’s not to love? As a human new to the supernatural world, Kalen goes through a lot in this story, and the way he handles everything, with grace and without prejudice, is impressive. I love how naturally he fits into Athena’s life. He becomes fast friends with Anders and Atlas, and his easy, affable, and wise attitude towards life endears him to everyone. Most of all, I ADORE the way he talks about and treats Athena as if nothing is as important as her. He respects and appreciates her and shows how much he cares in so many ways.
Kalen and Athena have an amazing love-at-first-sight, fated-mates romance, and I am totally here for it!! I love the fated-mates trope in romance, and Kalen and Athena take it to the next level!! They have a deep and passionate bond, and their relationship is very intense. Because they are fated mates, their feelings and impulses are almost uncontrollable, which leads to some very steamy scenes. Sa-woon!!! I love how close they grow, how much they care for each other, and how they work as equal partners in all that they do. Above all, their romance is… well, romantic. Swoon-worthy. Epic.
Other characters in the novel are intriguing as well. Athena has a tendency to rescue people in need, and this includes two vampires. Lincoln is young and funny and feels he has much to prove, and Colin is old and has a fascinating past that connects him to Athena. I’m curious to see where their stories go and have a feeling their characters are going to be an integral part of the next book.
The mystery surrounding missing humans and supernaturals is another intriguing element in Triad. Who is kidnapping them? What are their motives? Has the ancient demon Xercarus returned? Can the Triad defeat Xercarus? The plot is filled with twists and turns, which lead to an epic and shocking conclusion.
The supernatural elements in the story are really interesting too. With vivid descriptions and powerful imagery, Weisrock created a unique and immersive world. Vampires, wolf shifters, dragon shifters, demons, and more have integral roles in the story, and it’s fascinating to learn the hierarchy and systems of their society. It’s also cool to see all the different powers the characters have and how these powers change as the story progresses.
I loved so much about Triad – the romance, the strong family bonds, the suspense, the action, the love, the heartbreak, and that amazing and shocking ending! Did I mention the fantastic (and steamy) romance? I so enjoyed the story and can’t wait to read the next book in this series!!! Thanks so much to Brittany Weisrock for a copy of the book in exchange for my honest review.
Britt Weisrock’s Triad follows Athena (Thea) Whiteridge, future Alpha of her pack and the future Queen of an alliance of North American packs, and her two brothers. The triplets, known to supernatural beings the world over as “The Triad,” Athena, Anders and Alpha start the story in the human world, where they hunt down leads indicating the return of an ancient and vicious blood demon, Xercarus. In their search, the instead discover Athena’s mate… who happens to be a human. Their union brings Kalen (Kale) Ryan, a musician and former womanizer, into the Unseen, a world where supernatural beings are hidden from humans by a magical barrier. Kale’s presence there, combined with the looming threat of Xercarus, will send Athena’s world into a tailspin—one she may not be as prepared for as she thinks, despite a lifetime of training.
I was drawn into Triad from the prologue where we see the birth of the Triplets, and even more so in the first chapter where we see them as adults. The sibling bond and banter throughout the book is a refreshing relief when the tension gets high—which it will, I promise! When the Whiteridge’s meet Kale and realize that Athena’s wolf has bonded to him, Weisrock does an incredible job of capturing the uncontrollable feelings that result from the bond. At first, it’s almost humorous, but it swiftly becomes sweet and—just as quickly—steamy. While graphic, the sex scenes in this book never feel overly gratuitous or trashy, and the author makes a BEAUTIFUL point of bringing safe sex and a strong desire for both parties to be fully consenting at every step into the book without ever detracting from the sexiness of the moment.
Throughout the book, the Whiteridges experience unfathomable loss, subterfuge, and outright danger. The sacrifices that Athena and Kale are both required to make will test them both as individuals and as a pair. The action and tension never fade for long (and when it does, it’s usually lightened by some amusing comments from Athena’s brothers) and you will want to keep turning until the very last, heart-wrenching page. If you like Dead Until Dark, Buffy, or Supernatural, you will devour this book as I did, and your inner wolf will howl for more!
Triad is a steamy shifter novel that makes its mark on the paranormal romance world!
The first thing I loved about this book was the fact that Athena was not only a female alpha, but that she could shift into a dragon as well as a wolf. Coupling that with her unique bond with her twin brothers, this book instantly set itself apart and I dove into it eagerly.
I adored the character development in this book. In situations that could have been ridiculous like the “love at first sight” cliche, Weisrock makes it not only work, but believable. Kalen and Athena were such a good couple and I enjoyed watching their relationship grow.
My only small complaint was the pacing of the story was a bit all over the place. At times I felt it stagnated then it rushed to the ending and left me with THE BIGGEST CLIFFHANGER! Honestly I’m happy that Equinox is coming out soon because I need to know what happens next.
I am definitely looking forward to reading more by Weisrock! This is an amazing debut novel and I highly recommend it to any fans of paranormal romances.
This book has so many elements to it that all come together to make it such a brilliant read. Supernatural beings, family ties, prophecies, and love.
The relationship between Athena, Anders, and Atlas is lovely. They're each their own person and yet they always have each other's back. Athena is a bad ass alpha and nothing will stand in her way of protecting her family.
As a fan of romance books I particularly enjoyed Athena and Kale's relationship. The intensity burns on every page.
Triad is an exciting page-turner with family at the heart of it.
First of all, I must say I feel so lucky that I got to review this beautiful book before publication day. I am very grateful to the author for the given opportunity 🖤
This is the first book of new series, as well as the debul novel of promising new author. The story takes us to the Unseen, to a very special wolf shifters family from where we meet the Triad: Athena and her brothers, Anders and Atlas. And soon after Kalen, the bonded mate of Athena, joins the story and things just take off from there.
"Triad" is packed with action, magic, family bonds and love that was blessed by a goddess. It's a story about finding friends in the darkest places, as well as realising that not everyone deserves our trust. We see Athena and her pack facing incredible evil, but at the same time finding a way to enjoy life, to experience love, passion and overcoming fear.
However, the only thing that separated this read from 5 stars to me is that the story is more family bonding, finding your people rather than ancient demon and fighting evil. And I am darker fantasy lover, with lots of fighting and action, so I wanted more of... blood, I think. Yet, Athena is very strong and admirable protagonist that I just fell inlove with. Also, Kalen and Whiteridge boys... talking about new book boyfriends! 😂
By the way, the ending will leave you in shock and suffering from book hangover, but it's so worth it!
I was lucky enough to beta/ARC read Triad and watch the story and characters evolve from the very beginning.
Triad is a paranormal romance that captivated me from the first page. Athena is an alpha female and true warrior who handles every obstacle thrown her way. She falls in love with Kale and has a whirlwind romance all while trying to keep her family safe and understand her strong feelings.
When reading a book I enjoy when the book just sucks me in and I have to keep reading until I get to the end. Triad was no different. I sometimes only had one chapter at a time and I couldn’t wait to see what was going to happen next! Brittany made the characters just come to life for me. It was so easy to picture her words as elaborate visions. This book will keep you on your toes and take you on an adventure in more than one way.
Athena is stepping into her role as alpha wolf but she’s also falling in love. There are some very steamy sex scenes but it is never gross or lewd. Author makes sure that is important we acknowledge safe sex and consent from both sides.
I honestly can’t wait to have a hard copy in my hands to read it again front to back.
If you enjoy a book that is intriguing, romantic, powerful, engaging, heart-wrenching, and breath-taking. So many adjectives to describe this one book. Please put this on your must read list of 2021 and pre-order yourself a copy today!
A huge thank you to the amazing author of this book for sending me the ARC for her Debut novel to review!
TRIAD by Brittany Weisrock
🌟🌟🌟🌟✨
I absolutely LOVED this book! It was so much fun to read, I absolutely adored the characters and I will be thinking about the ending for the next month!
This starts out as a perfect love story where nothing could possibly go wrong, and it absolutely sucks you in! And besides the two main characters, there is a crowd of loveable side characters who help make this book so much better!
The world building is great, and I can’t wait to see more of it explored later on!
This is hands down one of the best Fantasy Books of the decade. Glimpses of Twilight mixed with the vibes of Melissa DeLaCruz's Blue Bloods, AND THEN SOME, this book is a MUST READ for anyone interested in Fantasy... especially those of us raised on YA Fantasy that can't quite give up the fun of the genre, but need a bit more maturity to keep our attention.
Such a fun, NA paranormal romance! The characters were vivid and engaging, and the storyline was intriguing. While I usually prefer more of a slow burn romance over the insta-connection the MC and her LI have, the relationship still managed to hold my interest, and bonus - more pages to fill with spicy love scenes. It's hot and angsty, and the twist ending will have you checking for updates on book 2 before know it. Well done.
Age/Trigger Warnings: 18+ for sex scenes. Family member's death (emotional grieving scenes, not a graphic death scene).
Spice Review: 4.5/5 - Multiple spicy scenes but not completely detailed. Intense passionate feelings throughout the book.
Storyline Review: The storyline was amazing. I felt like the story was "long" because of how much content, world & character building, was provided, not because of the page count. I took my time reading the book and I'm glad I did. It allowed me to savor the story in portions. I basically went on an emotional roller coaster ride, feeling the characters emotions and relationships building over time. The feelings of neutral, intense attraction, frustration, grief, passion… It's all there and captivating.
Without giving away too much information, this story is about Thea (Athena), who is one of the triplets known as the "Triad", shifters with powers that was prophesied about. Her brothers are Anders & Atlas and have prominent parts in this book. Thea is a female Alpha and has to go through scrutiny from people around her, even though most are supportive of her leadership and strength. Since they're shifters, they have more than a family bond, they share emotions and thoughts and it made the story more intense. Kale (Kalen) is the love interest introduced and you immediately feel the confusion and attraction since he's Thea's mate, but a human. Kale, Anders & Atlas all have the mindset that Thea is capable of handling herself and they will not force their thoughts or actions upon her. Kale is respectful of her boundaries, eager to learn more about this new life and his mate. The villain is Xercarus, an evil demon that is creating a horde. While he doesn't have an active part in the dialogue, he is mentioned often and a lot of events take place because of him. Lincoln is a newly turned teenage vampire and Thea and family basically adopted him. Colin is an old vampire and has an amazing transformation story. His story has missing pieces from memory loss and I really hope to find out more about his character and his connection to Thea in the sequel. Unfortunately, this story ends on a cliffhanger but should not be avoided because of that. There will be a sequel.
Writing Review: Well written. No noticeable errors in grammar, spelling, punctuation, etc. The characters were described with detail and connected really well. There was no confusion about "who is this character" because all of them were written with details about appearance, relationship connection and powers. I can appreciate how the author noted physical attributes/actions during the dialog, as it helped remind me of who the character is and gave them more of a relatable quality.
Additional Notes: If you want to read a book that makes you feel things emotionally, this is it. Intrigue, drama, suspense and passion all wrapped up in a paranormal romance package. Eagerly waiting for the sequel because I need to know things!!!
*I was given a free advanced reader copy with expectations of a complete and honest review. This review is not paid for by the author and the words written are mine alone*
Triad is a spicy, suspenseful, fated-mates, paranormal romance I thoroughly enjoyed! This shifter romance was unique as our FMC, Athena Whiteridge is an alpha who has the ability to shift into both a dragon and a wolf. Athena and her brothers are tasked with protecting the human and supernatural world. One night she meets a human she’s very attracted to. Turns out this human, Kalen, is her mate. An ancient enemy resurfaces and Athena must figure out how to save her people and fulfill her destiny.
Athena is strong, confident, and fierce. Her relationship with her brothers is strong, and this plays into the book as they must rely on each other when tensions are high. Kaden was such a sweet, caring character. The way he handles the intense changes was commendable and he fits into Athena’s life with ease.
All the characters were so interesting. The plot was filled with so many shocking twists and turns all leading to an epic ending! Triad was a page-turner and I’m looking forward to Equinox!
Energetic urban fantasy with splashes of magic and plenty of action! Ventures into all out erotica, at times, too.
Think Underworld meets Twilight with just a pinch of Star Wars.
I can imagine readers of urban fantasy and steamy romance will love this. If you like your werewolves, vampires, demons and fantasy motifs, this is definitely for you!
My only criticism is the cast of characters were almost all young, beautiful, rich and privileged with perfect families - a bit difficult for me to relate to at times. I liked Lincoln, though. But then he was the odd one out!
Without giving the whole plot away, here is my honest review:
Aside from the Twilight Saga, I have never read a Paranormal Book about Werewolves before. I'm biased toward other creatures of the dark, and yet, I can safely say that TRIAD is one of my favorite books of 2021. Fast-paced and thoroughly gripping, it will shake you to your core from the get-go. With a hot and heavy love story combined with a high-stakes plot, TRIAD will leave you at the edge of your seat.
I'm a sucker for romance, and Britt gives all of it within the first few chapters. In the snap of a finger, everything is intense, passionate, and electrifying. It made me keep on reading to find out what happens next. And oh boy, did I get a lot of things that kept me biting my fingers in suspense.
At the center of the story are Athena Whiteridge and her brothers. They are werewolf royalty who live in the Unseen, a world hidden from humans. Their job is to protect mortals and other creatures in their area. One night, on a regular patrol, they run into Kalen Ryan, a handsome human who instantly forms a connection with Athena. Lo and behold, once their eyes meet, the relationship solidifies. The reader discovers that they are mates.
With a crown and prophecy that's been handed to her since she was a child, a family to protect, and now a mate, Athena must balance her life as a princess and the astonishing bond she just found. Dangers and threats await the new couple, and they must navigate together to survive.
TRIAD is a sexy, romantic, and suspenseful twist on the tried and true genre! It will build you up and break you down in the span of one book, leaving you begging for the second installment. It's a definite must-read, and I highly recommend it to Paranormal fans!
It’s full of adventure, twists and turns ... it made me cry laugh feel loved. You get to understand each character and connect to each in many different ways. The books full of wolves, vampires and all different mystical characters which gives it its own unique twist!
I read it in just over a day because it was that addicting I couldn’t put it down it drags you in and keeps coming up with more ways to keep you intrigued into what happens next. The author has done an amazing job with keeping us on our toes !! (And in my opinion is the best thing in a book)
Prophecies meet power in this nonstop romp through the Unseen, a world cloaked from our own, where nearly every paranormal creature--from elves to vamps--live in their own society. At the heart of this is our heroine, Athena, a shifter with both a dragon and wolf side to her, and her brothers, Atlas and Anders, and together these triplets form the prophetic Triad. Not a moment is wasted as the trio seek out those who would threaten the human and supernatural world alike, unwittingly thrusting Athena into the path of her fated mate, who isn't at all who she expects. Steamy scenes come fast and furious, and the action doesn't let up as the pack expands, exploring themes of trust, love, self-determination, and found family. But oh the ending! Can't spoil--just gonna have to read the next one!
Firstly, I’d like to say that this is not my normal genre. But thanks to this novel, I’ll be looking for more like this.
Ok, Brittany has sculpted a world so full and vivid that I think she may be from The Unseen herself. How else could she conjure up such epic characters? The characters have so much depth and believability I’m sure they have their own passports!
Right from the get go, you fall for Athena and her brothers and are willing them on. Then, in comes Kalen and Lincoln and you form a protective ring around them all.
I don’t want to go into any story detail as you need to go into this with fresh eyes. As soon as I finished it, I went straight to the sequel - desperate for answers.
Do yourself a favour and read this. Brittany is one hell of a storyteller.
I had the wonderful opportunity to received an ARC for this book in exchange for an honest review. Thank to you Brittany Weisrock for the opportunity to let me experience her world ahead of time. Now on to my thoughts.
I love the Paranormal Romance Genre its full of all sorts of goodies that no two books are ever alike. And boy does Weisrock nails it with this story. This book is a black hole of engaging, dynamic characters and spice! Lots and lots of spice! So when you pick this book handle with care you might get burn.
The story follows Athena and her two brothers Atlas and Anders who are part of the prophetic Triad, a group of shapeshifters with mythical powers destined to protect the creatures from the Unseen and Earth. The best way I could describe it is, think of them as the Charmed ones...if they were shaepshifters and knew their destiny all their lives. Its that good.
What I loved most about this book is the characters. Athena is the Alpha wolf with a a baddass set of powers and the responsibility to lead her people and her brothers. But she is also this sweet young woman that you can't help but cheer on. Atlas and Anders are Betas to her Alpha and they assist her as much as they aggravate her. But hey, that's what family is for and that's a big theme for this book. Family and loyalty.
And where there's romance there must be a couple and that comes in the shape of Kalen and Athena. Destined mates who found each other while Thea was on a mission and boy do sparks fly. The book nearly catches on fire from the chemistry between this two. Kalen is not your typical Alpha A Type personality male that you see in the genre. He is sweet, lovable and kind. And while not they usual thing seen, it works deliciously well for this story. Kalen and Athena compliment each other in such a way that you just want more of them.
All in all this book is a pleasant addition to the genre and I can't wait to see what else this author has in store for us...Is the next book out yet? HAHAHAHA
Triad is a steamy debut from Brittany Weisrock, perfect for paranormal romance fans. It features a strong lead in Athena, a well-rounded (and fun!) cast of supporting characters, and a hot central romance. Romantic scenes are sexy without being too graphic, while the action scenes are exciting and well-paced. Following the tense and unpredictable close to Triad, readers will be anxious to sink their teeth into the next installment.
Triad features a strong female MC, the alpha of the triad, Athena Whiteridge aka Thea. The males in her life, from her father to her brothers, to her love interest Kalen, are openly supportive of this role, and it is discussed at times in conversation/dialogue, which is wonderful. I enjoyed the contemporary setting, language, and references to popular culture throughout the novel. The sensual scenes are varied, exciting, and gracefully written. The action is well paced and maintains you in suspense for much of the novel. The fight scene with Xercarus and his hoard was my favorite. The main characters and supporting characters are very relatable. The ending is a bit of a dagger to the chest and leaves you anxiously awaiting the second book in the series. Overall, I loved it.
Where do I start, without spoilers? I had the privilege of advance reading Triad. Brittany introduced me to a world of fantasy and romance I connected with immediately! The attention paid to details in this story is next level.
The story follows Athena Whiteridge (Thea) and her brothers, Anders, and Atlas. Thea is supernatural and a relatable bada**, who made me want to keep reading. I didn’t want to leave the world Brittany created. The dynamic between Thea and her brothers is top notch and their witty dialogue is downright comical—in such a pleasing way. I loved, loved, loved the romance between Thea and Kale. It’s been quite a long time since I’ve read a male lead character who wasn’t the predictable emotionally unreachable guy. Such a refreshing change! Let me just say, I got to the end and all I wanted was MORE! Can’t wait for book two.
I absolutely loved this story! Weisrock did an amazing job of building this world and making our main characters peak interest and fascination. Athena Whiteridge, in particular, is an amazing female protagonist who is strong and bold beyond her amazing abilities as an alpha. She just is badass! As she journeys through this amazing story with her brothers, Anders and Atlas, and meets her match in Kalen, the reader is captivated and eager to know what will happen next!
4.7 Firstly, thank you Brittany and Lake Country Press for a copy of Triad! I've heard a lot about this book and kept my eyes on it for too long. When I came across Lake Country Press looking for reviewers - I knew I hit the jackpot! Not only they're the nicest press but the book is A M A Z I N G. Athena, the alpha, the wolf and the dragon, the one who possesses fire power. I mean, have you read about a stronger female protagonist? She's beauty, she's grace! I really enjoyed her character. She was strong and vulnerable at the same time. The family was her main point, the second one was a duty to the Triad and protecting the human world. Few chapters in, she fell in love with a human - Kalen. Maybe it wasn't the love at first but they had that strong bonding from the second their eyes met. And let me tell you the story became spicy! Oh! I enjoyed it, of course, but I did not expect them to have 'fun' so often! I got tired after just reading about it, haha. I wasn't sure about Kalen at first. Yes, he's a gentleman, he was very protective and loving toward Athena but something was missing. He grew on me as a character but I wouldn't consider him my bookish boyfriend. I guess I'm more into the bad boy type who doesn't fall in love with you so easily. Anders and Atlas, the twin brothers. They did annoy me with their continuing bickering but I guess that was the point? I actually felt like a member of their pack while reading. I do not have any siblings myself so it was nice to see that I actually do not miss out a lot. Sorry for being rude! Just prefer some privacy! The vampires, fairies and werewolves were the main paranormal creatures. I really wanted to hear more about the fairie world because I have a weakness for them! But I do understand that this book focuses on different topics. I do not want to bore you with my review to much so let me go straight to the ending. O M G! It really shocked me. I expected something to happen when the battle started but for it to end it in such a cruel way? Oh, my heart. I do not want to spoil it too much so I'll leave it for you to experience it yourself but trust me when I say - you won't expect that plot twist for sure.
I’m a HUGE fan of paranormal books and shifter ones in particular, but Triad is different to anything I’ve read and I LOVED it! There are loads of refreshing differences between this novel and some other shifter books. First up, Athena is the alpha and a total badass, respected by both her family and her whole pack and I loved her. This was a pleasant change to the usual male alpha/submissive female. She’s a confident, strong and independent heroine who rules fairly and with a conscience. And she’s very tall, which is worth noting, as tall girls don’t get enough representation in books!
Second, I loved the characters’ family relationship. Despite the hierarchy, they were one unit, showing affection and love for each other and they always had each other’s backs. I particularly enjoyed the Triad’s banter which was reminiscent of any siblings and it showed their humanity and made them relatable. And third, despite their instant attraction, there was a lot more depth to Athena and Kalen’s relationship than some of the ‘fated mates’ novels I’ve read. Kalen constantly challenged Athena and stood at her side, rather than being submissive and in turn, Athena is respectful and protective of Kalen and supports him through the challenges he faces.
The story is beautifully written and contains everything I want from a fantasy novel and more. The world building is exciting, unique and beautifully executed. Each page was filled with epic battles, fearsome creatures, deceit, deception, heartbreak and romance and I loved every minute of it. The book ends on a huuuuge cliff hanger, so consider yourself warned! I can’t wait to get my hands on book 2 Equinox.
Brittany Weistock is an author to look out for and has firmly made it onto my one click author list!
When it comes to paranormal romance, I'm more of a vampires and demons kind of gal. I like 'em dark and I like 'em with teeth. But oh boy did this book suck me in. I was not prepared for how much I would love these characters and their world. WARNING: this book is HOT!!
Athena and her brothers form the triad, a group of three wolf shifters with incredible powers. They use this combined power to protect both the supernatural world, and the oblivious humans beyond it. Athena is a badass, and not your average wolf. She is the alpha to her brothers' omega, the queen bee and the one calling the shots. I think what I enjoyed most about this setup was how the men around her all gave her the respect she deserves. It was refreshing not to have the main character struggling to be seen and heard because -gasp- she's a woman. I also gained a big soft spot for her brothers, and with the themes of family and strong bonds reoccurring through the book, they had her back in a way that gave me serious Twilight vibes.
And of course, there's Kalen. Sweet, lovely, cheeky Kalen, who is sooo not my usual type, but had me falling deep. Athena and Kalen are drawn to each other from the moment they lay eyes on each other. It's rather inconvenient and throws a major spanner in the works, especially for Athena, who has serious responsibility that definitely does not involve cute humans. But they have serious chemistry, and soon their lives become tangled together in ways neither of them ever imagined.
This book left with a serious hangover! I won't say any more, but you have been warned... ;-)
Triad is filled with action, romance, spice, and a ton of fantasy lore that keeps it all very interesting. It reads similarly to Twilight and makes for an easy binge read.
The world in this book is filled with wolves, vampires, elves, etc that remain behind an unseen barrier within the human world which makes for compelling lore.
Athena is a total badass main character who is powerful, commanding, and totally relatable. All of the characters are fun to read about and their banter and actions make them relatable and people you want to root for. I went in somewhat blind, so the romance took me by surprise, but I enjoyed Athena and Kale's relationship and just wanted them to be happy already!
I'll say at times I felt like the story could've been shorter as there was a lull in action. The climatic fight doesn't come until the last 50 pages or so and it feels a little too late and ends all too quickly. I also felt like the plot was at times predictable and sometimes too focused on the romance rather than the "big bad" and the prophecy.
However, overall, this was a good debut novel and ends in a horrifying cliffhanger that makes you NEED the next book in the series ASAP.
The first thing that struck me about this book was the sense of family unity. Despite the typical teasing that is completely normal with siblings, they have each other’s back and can rely on each other one hundred percent. The other thing I liked about this book is that it was different from other shifter stories in that the Alpha was a female. So many of these types of books have a strong male alpha and the female is weaker, usually not aware of her powers or ability to shift. This book turned that on its head and this time the female alpha was bonded to a human man. I won’t give any spoilers, but let’s say Kalen’s journey was an interesting one. The relationship between the two of them was one of mutual feelings and, as typical in shifter books, instantaneous. Athena was the type of female protagonist that I love. Strong, badass and feisty. The overall theme of this book was family and loyalty but with one hell of an ending that will leave you screaming for book 2.
