Since his resurrection by Ed Brubaker as The Winter Soldier, Bucky Barnes has pretty much been ill-served by Marvel in his solo outings. Take a look at Ales Kot and his Bucky Barnes: The Winter Soldier, Volume 1: The Man on the Wall, I mean what the hell was that about!?!

Here you have a story that fits the character and his notorious past: The Bucky tries to get some sort of redemption by giving others with questionable history a second chance.

His goodwill is strained to the limits by trying to help a “Bucky” wannabe: a teenaged HYDRA assassin.

Work habits die hard, so Bucky kind of has his work cut out for him.

Bottom Line : This one’s less punch-y and more dialogue driven than some super-hero comics, but it works pretty well because it’s a story that actually fits a character and his past – his motivations logically evolve from his comic book history. Imagine that!

Those two Bucky fans – the dude with 10 cats all named after French philosophers in Duluth and the lady, who works part time as a stripper in Gothenburg, Sweden (“Hej, Birgitta!!) – should be happy.

Bonus points for not making the villain, The Spot a loser.

This one was really good; a gripping, often moving, story with great artwork. My only complaint is that it isn’t an ongoing series!

This wasn't the best Bucky story I've ever read but it was the best one I've read in years. Bucky is my favourite Marvel character and I hated most recent stories he appeared in – don't get me started on Thunderbolts, and no, I didn't like Tales of Suspense (which I now realized I even forgot to mark as read here, it seems I just wanted to forget it as soon as I was done with it). The story wasn't revolutionary good but it was a well-paced intrigue fit for a mini-series. It reminded me of how good Brubaker's Bucky was and got closer to it than anything with Bucky that came out since.

One of the better takes on Winter Soldier since Brubaker stopped writing him. Nice art too.

I really wanted to love this. I read the first issue and I adored it! The premise is one I've been dying to see for this character. In the end, while I certainly didn't hate it, it ultimately wasn't as moving as I wanted it to be. It didn't hit as hard in some places as much as I thought it would.

I'm a sucker for a redemption story. I like the exalted heroes (Superman, Steve Rogers, Thor, etc) as much as the next girl. The heroes that start out from a place of honor, doing the job because it's the right thing to do. The valiant thing. However, I also really love stories about the characters that are trying to make up for a checkered past. Whether that be because they had a different system of morality and were shown the light (Michael and Eleanor in the Good Place) or they were forced to do bad things and someone took them under their wing and taught them a better way (Damian Wayne, Black Widow, etc).

Bucky Barnes is a great example of the latter. Hydra forced him to kill for them and he was freed from their control when Steve Rogers used the cosmic cube on him. In this book, he decides to use his second chance to try to help others stuck in a bad way. It's a really great premise for a character like this. The only thing that makes him feel worthwhile is helping others.

I like the plot enough, it's just that the writing didn't have as big an impact as I expected. Again, it's not bad, it just didn't leave as big an effect on me. While I felt sorry for RJ, I wasn't particularly invested to keep reading this book. I certainly didn't speed through it needing to know the ending.

Anyway, the arts nice - reminded me a tid bit of Phil Noto's style. It makes the action scenes work. Loved seeing Spot again, he's a cool rogue.

Not quite a recommend from me, but definitely not a bad book for Bucky Barnes. He doesn't have a lot of solo issues.

This is LITERALLY all I've ever wanted from Bucky - atoning for his past by helping others, and maybe even becoming a pseudo-dad along the way. Love the art, the characters, and the story (despite being a tad predictable). Excited to see where this run goes!

"ONCE YOU'RE IN THAT PLACE, YOU JUST... HATE YOURSELF SO MUCH THAT...YOU CAN'T IMAGINE HOW ANYONE ELSE COULD EVER NOT HATE YOU... IT'S THE LONELIEST THING"

Esses dias reassisti os filmes do capitao america e a minha obsessao pelo bucky voltou a toda força. Assinei o marvel unlimited pra ler esse quadrinho e to gostando bastante do app.

Gostei MT dessa hq. Achei bem triste, o final é super triste tbm, so depressao. Mas o bucky tem um gatinho, o que eu achei bem fofo ksksksk

This is probably closer to a 3 than a 4, but as awful as Bucky comics have been since Brubaker left, this is a breath of fresh air that pushed itself over the line for me.
It starts out seeming like a Punisher comic, but then there is a twist that Bucky is mostly just menacing people with his guns not shooting them, and he is now helping people get a second chance in a witness protection type setup. The theme of second chances runs throughout the book and is explored well.
Bucky also gets his own little version of himself whom he gets to try to mold in his own desired image. The book drags a little in the middle when it turns into a Robin book and Bucky-Batman is nowhere to be found, but then it picks back up with some decent moral quandary puzzles before ending with some promise for a future book.
My main criticism with this is that aside from one scene dealing with flashbacks and brainwashing, this never takes full advantage of its title character's shtick.

Having had a second chance himself, Bucky is extending the same opportunity to others, getting people out of dangerous lives they're regretting and setting them up with new identities in the Midwest. It's not without its problems, not least because bagging groceries in Wisconsin is even less fun than torturing people for Hydra. And then Bucky runs into a kid who especially reminds him of himself - though is more a fan of the murderous early work. It's probably the most low-key comic ever to feature a guest appearance by the Spot, Reis' art perfect for evoking a murky world of motel rooms and backwater bars suddenly shattered by violence. Although obviously it's spitting in the face of anyone who's primarily a fan of the Winter Soldier by way of the MCU, given the complete absence of a maritime refurbishment plotline.

Loved this! This is the Bucky Barnes story I was waiting for, and didn't realize it. In this run we see Bucky as a flawed human being, struggling with the weight of an immense trauma, and trying so hard to do the right thing one day at a time. We get a wonderful supporting cast of Tony Stark, Sharon Carter, and Doc Samson. Rod Reis's art brings the characters alive beautifully. His unique, expressive faces, strong anatomy, and color choices are real stand outs. It definitely makes me want to check out his other work. (I'm also convinced he based Mr. Cole's appearance on David Bowie.) Overall, the more I turn this story over in my mind, the more I find to love. It's earned a permanent place on my bookshelf.

Bucky is giving people second chances and helping them start new lives, and when a Bucky-ripoff tries to kill him he also gives the boy a second chance! Here's Bucky, with his own mini Bucky, trying to start over and dealing with all the family drama and tension! Watch as a pretty heartfelt and intense series turns into some sort of slapstick goofy ending that's supposed to be dramatic but had me putting down the book to laugh my ass off at how silly it was. See Rod Reis' beautiful artwork that carries the book, with some incredible fight scenes and layouts that make the book almost worth checking out. And then forget the book because it's a generic Bucky story you'd see everywhere and nothing about it is really all that memorable.

9/10:
This short five-issue series is one of my favorites that center on the legendary Bucky Barnes (Winter Soldier). This is long past his days as Captain America’s sidekick, presumed death, and time as an assassin for Hydra, yet his past still haunts him. Despite this, we see Bucky truly embrace that past, trying to atone for it by saving those who need a second chance at life alongside fellow heroes Sharon Carter (Agent 13), Tony Stark (Iron Man), and Doc Samson.

Watching Bucky essentially become a guardian for the young RJ Boyle was really exciting and makes me want more from that duo together. I really hope that RJ eventually returns, because he hasn’t done so since this series released 5 years ago. But to see this kid go toe to toe with the Winter Soldier and even someone like Captain America (Sam Wilson) or US Agent (John Walker) would be incredibly exciting!

“Well, that the problem, isn’t it? Helping someone and saving them are two different things. You can’t make someone perfect, Bucky. And you can’t BE perfect.”

Second Chances by Kyle Higgins has to be my favorite Bucky Barnes story arch. The stunning art by Rod Reis makes the story come to life. The raw emotion, the isolation, the feeling of being a burden and wanting to do the right thing. Second Chances gives Bucky Barnes a new light. They really humanized him. He wasn’t just this PTSD brain washed solider trying to be good. But instead, used his resources to help others. Is that what a true hero does? Do real hero’s wear costumes and fight bad guys? Or do hero’s help themselves and help others at the same time. This story was beautiful in the most tragic way. I look forward to reading more Winter Soldier stories like this. It felt genuine and one of a kind.

A great chapter in the life of Bucky Barnes, this series blends the gritty reality of Bucky’s life as the Winter Soldier with the hope and heroism that Cap inspired in his friend. Bucky’s trip to save people seeking a new life away from crime is a heartfelt welcome, as is the new cast of characters who begin throwing themselves in his path. The artwork brings to life the espionage and grim nature of Bucky’s world to life perfectly, making this a must-read.

This was pretty good! Now free & pardoned, Bucky Barnes wants to help other people start over. In this he meets a young RJ who has been sent by HYDRA to kill him. RJ's entire look has been based around Bucky's old costume and after RJ's handler shoots him to get to Bucky, Bucky takes him in.

I love the gag that Bucky's arm kept getting destroyed mid-fight until he gets a cool Starktech arm upgrade. I thought the story was pretty good and Bucky with literally his own Bucky was cute. Also his cat!!! 😍

The later issues weren't as strong as the ones before it and I'm bummed this wasn't a series. It felt a little too fast and that they could have done more with this only for it to end early. The ending was good but personally it wasn't what I wanted so it left me kinda bitter lol.

The art was so good. It fit the vibe so well and was pretty. Bucky's full beard for a hot second there really went off. Solid run, wish I had more Winter Soldier.

I absolutely loved this mini series. It isn’t groundbreaking, nor is it the best series I’ve ever read, but I loved it nonetheless. Both the writing and the artwork are stunning. I would liked to see it continued one day.

A limited series about Bucky Barnes, of course, I'm going to be all over it, and you can bet that I have reviews for every single issue. That's right, once my dissertation's in I'm resurrecting the blog (www.cartonmanettedarnay.wordpress.com). In the meantime, I can tell you that this five-issue series was really great. I had my doubts because the cover of the trade paperback is very kid-sidekick, but I was proven wrong. The art is great Reis is really talented, and some of his panels are pretty gorgeous. Most importantly the story had heart, it was emotionally driven, with some pretty awesome fight scenes, and it's the kind of story that Bucky deserves. I loved it, and I would love to see more!
