About the author

Jeremy Black is an English historian, who was formerly a professor of history at the University of Exeter. He is a senior fellow at the Center for the Study of America and the West at the Foreign Policy Research Institute in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, US.
Black is the author of over 180 books, principally but not exclusively on 18th-century British politics and international relations, and has been described by one commentator as "the most prolific historical scholar of our age". He has published on military and political history, including Warfare in the Western World, 1882–1975 (2001) and The World in the Twentieth Century (2002).

This book definitely ends on a downer and it's difficult to be fair to the majority of it due to it's ending. The author, as of 2000, was not optimistic about England's future with the EU or with Scotland or Ireland. In fact the author doesn't seem too upbeat about any of the things that England has done since Henry VII.

I liked reading about the Kings and Queens and the changing government. The author's prose was overly complex at times making it harder to understand. He also felt the need to explain feudal terms which I actually understood pretty well but didn't explain other terms that I didn't know.

I was looking for an overview of England's history and that is what I got but I'm still dissatisfied. While it wasn't uninteresting, there also wasn't a lot of life and joy in the book. Makes me wonder if the author wanted to write a murder mystery but was forced to honor a contract to write this book first. In the beginning he felt the need to do his best and get through it and then became more and more disenchanted with the whole project as it went along.

Şanlı Devrim sonrası biraz aceleye gelmiş gibi. Amerika'nın kopması, Kanada ve Avustralya'nın statüsü, Victora Çağı, dünya savaşları, imparatorluğun çözülmesi vs gibi konular çok havada kalmış. 19.yüzyıla kadar klasik tarih yazımında giden kitap, sonrasında bir anda sanayi devrimi ve teknolojik değişimlerin Büyük Britanya halkları üzerindeki etkilerine dönüyor. Son kısım, toplumsal değişimi neden-sonuç bağlamında incelediği için fena sayılmaz.

Doğrusu kitabın bu kadar yerilmesine anlam veremedim. Çevirisini gayet başarılı buldum. 500 küsür sayfaya göre de böylesine devasa bir konuyu başarılı biçimde özetlemiş. Puan kırmamın tek sebebi kitabın biraz kısa kalmasıdır. 200-300 sayfa daha uzatıp okuru daha tatmin çok tatmin edecek bir eser yazılabilirsi bence

A basic overview of English history, or the history of the national area of England, more accurately. The book's focus is on overarching themes, rather than on a chronological narrative. The neophyte would probably be well-served by combining this with a more conventional narrative history.

Its strength is that it gives the reader a decent conceptual framework with which to organize the welter of names and events of British history. Its weakness is that there's little there that is particularly gripping.

Although I enjoy nonfiction and history, this book is hard to follow and poorly written. I gave up in the Tudors chapter. I'd rather find a better written book on the subject than waste any more time.
