I've always written stories. I started out as a kid creating monster stories with a $5 typewriter from the early 1900's. Now I write novels: speculative fiction (SpecFic), crime fiction, or contemporary fiction according to whatever ideas occur to me. I live in Christchurch, New Zealand, about as far away from anywhere as it is possible to be. Earthquakes devastated the city in 2010 and 2011. They appear in my books. I've got a degree that I've never used and two diplomas, one in Hypnotherapy and the other in a subject I don't mention to anyone, as it was so long ago. I read widely: particularly SpecFic, YA, contemporary and non-fiction. My favourite author is Connie Willis, but I mostly read indie authors nowadays. I also enjoy copy-editing and proofreading other authors' manuscripts.

A down at the heels detective is hired by an insurance agency to find out who stole a shipment of Opossum fur. Wouldn't opossum fur be worse than rabbit? His paramour reporter companion becomes involved when there's a fire.

It's all a bit strange.

Sardonic PI, Danny Ashford and energetic investigative reporter Deepa Banwait join forces again in the latest instalment of the fresh and intriguing Quake City Investigations series.

After a warehouse is broken into and a million dollars in possum fur products are stolen, Danny is hired by the insurance company who are desperate to avoid paying out (who knew possum fur was so valuable?) Soon, the case becomes more than just theft and the stakes are raised when Danny find the murdered body of someone involved.

As usual investigative reporter Deepa joins forces with Danny as they attempt to get to the bottom of who is behind the crimes and why—making themselves a target in the process.

A great story filled with twists and turns! Kept me guessing ‘who done it’ right to the end!

Berry's storytelling is exceptional again and although this is listed as a novella, it's 141 pages packed full of plot, twists and turns, the wonderful dynamic between Danny and Deepa and a cast of possible suspects.

Danny and Deepa are fast becoming one of my favorite crime-solving teams. I love how they work together and sometimes to each others' frustration. Berry's plot is woven in such a way that you don't really know who the culprit is until you're almost on top of it. Also this story introduces a potential new nemesis that I hope to see more of in later books.

A really strong series for anyone who likes PI mysteries, crime noir, thrillers or just a generally good mystery. Available on Kindle Unlimited.

Mystery, Murder and Possum Fur

I found this an enjoyable and oddly off-kilter modern noir detective story. A down-on-his-luck private eye pursues justice and a fast buck in an earthquake damaged city. The cops are lazy, the reporters intrepid and the initial crime just the tip of a crooked iceberg. An amusing page-turner.
