The only thing harder than being a saloon girl is finding true love as a mail order bride.
Jane Thompson suddenly finds herself a widow after her abusive husband passes away. With no way to support herself, she is forced to advertise with a mail order bride catalogue, agreeing to move out to Wyoming to marry a farmer who proposes a home and a peaceful life.
But what seems like a blessing at first becomes a nightmare.
There is no husband in waiting. Instead, Jane is forced to work as a saloon girl… for the slimy Mr. Cox.
Widower Adam Keen is a man who has condemned himself to an uneventful, unhappy and monotonous life, until he stumbles upon the beautiful and distressed Jane, who is also… pregnant.
Risking everything on an impulse, Adam decides to help free her from Mr. Cox.
But is Adam ready to risk whatever he has left for Jane? And how far can Jane escape, when caught between love and duty?
Each book in the Evergreen Frontier series is a standalone story that can be read out of order.
Florence Linnington stumbled upon writing historical romance at a young age, and has never looked back. What drives her to keep going at her writings are simple: joy and peace.
Florence's novels strive to bring characters to life, be they having a strong personality or an unassuming nature — it is this mix of disposition that makes novels a pleasant read.
New to discovering my mail order bride books?
You can start reading any of my books in any series — that's right, any one of them as each story is a standalone read even if they are in a series. You will not get lost; you can still immerse yourself in the story 'universe'!
Well done, again. Author Florence Linnington is the best author out there. She some how keeps her book's from becoming like the other's. But each of them are fresh and with new twists and motives. I do keep up with her. Thank You for another fantastic book, can't wait for the next one!
Burdened Mail-Order Bride and her Reserved Widower is the seventh installment in Florence Lennington’s Evergreen Frontier series. In it readers meet Jane Thompson and Adam Kent. Both are emotionally wounded individuals escaping the sadness of their lives by relocating to Evergreen, Wyoming. She as a disillusioned mail-order bride duped to venture West and forced to become a saloon girl. He as a troubled isolated pianist making his living playing in saloons. They both have secrets. Her secret is two-fold. The first is the circumstances that led up to and catapulted her into being a saloon girl. The second is her unexpected pregnancy from her marriage to an abusive husband, Phil. His secret is that he is a widower who cannot get over the tragic loss of his wife and baby. How does Destiny bring these two together? You must read tis book to discover what occurred.
Once again, Ms. Linnington does a remarkable job with this historical western romance. I find her writing style entertaining. I think she does a swell job illustrating the trials and tribulations befalling a biracial romantic relationship. I find her plot moved smoothly with just the right number of rising actions (via the lead characters inability to face their demons) to keep her readers’ attention. The dialog, conversational and internal monologues, is strong. Her use of descriptive language painted clear and vivid scenes. At times, I felt that Ms. Linnington over stretched her lead characters personal and internal agonies. Nevertheless, I find myself still wanting to read the rest of this series as each one continues the main theme of a mail-order bride searching for happiness. Yet, each installment differs through an assortment of characters that challenge the protagonists’ happiness. Way to go, Ms. Linnington.
Jane has not had an easy life. Raised in an orphanage and from there winding up homeless, marrying an abusive man, and once again finding herself about to be homeless after her husband died, she sought a way out as a mail order bride.
Unfortunately, it turned out the man who paid her way out west was not seeking a wife, but women he could trap into becoming saloon girls working for him and forcing them into selling their bodies to his customers.
But luckily a kind piano player rescued Jane from this deceitful and cruel man bringing her to the nearby town of Evergreen where she could work at Cassidy's saloon, a place where the women were paid & treated well, and where they didn't sell themselves to the customers.
I enjoyed reading this story. Unlike in some of her other books, we were given the chance to see the ways many women who were unfortunate in how their lives had progressed sometimes were forced to resort to in order to support themselves when they didn't have a man to protect and care for them. It showed us a sometimes darker side of the lives people were often forced into through a lack of other options available to them.
And yet, despite the harshness of life, as with her other stories, I had to believe that this story would have the happy ending that I have come to expect from Ms. Linnington's tales. This book did not disappoint me, though there were many twists and turns that Jane needed to overcome that some of Ms Linnington’s other characters have never needed to face.
As with her other books, if you enjoy a good mail order bride tale, I would suggest giving this one a try. I don't think you'll be disappointed.
Jane was an orphan who accepted a proposal from a rich man. He was a drunkard and beat her. He was killed in an accident and she decided to put an ad in the catalogue as a Mail Order Bride. She received a response from Copper Run in Wyoming. She got there only to discover it was a saloon owner that answered and lied in the ad. She tried working there only to discover she could not do what they wanted. In comes Adam from Evergreen to save the day~ He plays the piano in the saloon in Evergreen and saw Jane’s plight. He managed to get her a job at the local saloon. Soon, she had a following of men who she listened too. Cassie, who has her eyes set on Adam is jealous and causes trouble for Jane. Jane then discovers she is expecting and a low-down man once again is offering to marry her. Should she say yes? What about Adam? Who will she choose? How will she survive? What will Adam do? How can he face failure again if he chooses Jane? I received this as an ARC and am leaving a voluntary review.
A good mail order bride story. Jane’s husband was an “up in society man”. He had a serious problem of drinking and beating up Jane when he was drunk. Soon he died from his drinking and Jane discovered he had not been paying the mortgage and the bank was repossessing their house. Jane did not want to go back to living on the streets, so she applied to be a mail order bride. She answered the first letter she received, and traveled to Wyoming to be married. It was just a hoax to get her out there to work in a saloon. Very interesting story, a must read to see what Jane does to get out of this situation.
Rating books takes speculation! My mother gave me a voracious appetite of the written word! God bless her soul for in my 70 years, reading was always my comfort, a book my friend, and as with knowledge, a history book or a biography, they have enlightened my wisdom. Thousands of books!
Yet, fiction has a gift, at times, that comparing genre I have to go with my feelings! I loved this book! Ms. Linkington captured me with great characters and a lot of emotions! I give her a five star rating! You won my love.
I enjoyed reading your book. It was a pleasant experience yet intriguing, too. It kept me interested from beginning to end. The main characters were special and likeable. I am looking forward to reading your next book. Your short synopsis of it was intriguing making me wish I could start it now.:--)

As usual I was taken into the town of Evergreen. It was though I knew the old townsmen and met the new ones. By the time I finished the book I couldn’t wait to see what happens to the old friends and meet the new ones. Already downloaded the next book.
