He took her from all she had ever known, asked her to trust him when she most needed someone to trust, and she followed with her heart, unaware he carried a dark secret that could tear them apart...
When a stranger, a golden knight who is one of the king's barons, comes to Glenna Gordon's isolated island farm, she learns her whole life has been a lie. Lyall Robertson, Baron Montrose, carries a secret royal order to take Glenna to the father she has never known, a man so powerful he has hidden his daughter away to protect her from his enemies.
Raised in seclusion for her own safety, with no knowledge of who she really is, Glenna has become strong and self-reliant, someone who is unused to being ordered about. But Lyall doesn't have time to deal with one headstrong woman. He has a single, all-consuming goal: to win back his family lands lost when his father was declared a traitor.
As they ride across the wild hills and valleys of Norman Scotland, a land filled with unexpected danger and treachery, they are swept into a forbidden love, one as dangerous as the enemies pursuing them. But Lyall is tortured by a dark past and a secret that threatens their love, and soon, Glenna must face the truth: that her heart as well as her life is at risk.

Boy, have I missed this author! I'm so glad she's back and back with a truly "wonderful" book. Rich in time and place and character, Jill Barnett just never fails to enchant. Glenna is a strong heroine and her love for Lyall is hard won. I don't want to give anything away but there are few surprises, which I loved. Lots of snappy dialogue and adventure between their first meeting and falling in love and some great scenes! I laughed, I cried, I loved it. I can't wait to read the next sister.
I was blown away by this wonderful book! Such an emotional story filled with action, adventure, suspense and surprises. I was riveted to the pages of this captivating tale from start to finish. Please don't make me wait to long for the next in this series!
I gave this a four star not because I didn't like it or because it fell short of my expectations. I am not that full of myself. It's only book one and I so enjoyed this I need to continue. I truly loved the adventures of Skye, Fergus, and the mangy puss. On to book two!
Not good. I usually love her books. Not this one! Not likeable characters or worth caring what happens. How had a normal idea, compared to her magical ones, go so wrong?? Expected more!
363 page ebook. Story did drag at times, I felt it could have ended at 280 pages. However, after reading the author's note at the end, I can understand the length.
The descriptions of the Scottish countryside in the 1100s is amazing. I'm a little worried.. seems that the first two daughters are very very similar.. is the next story going to be a repeat of this one?
And.. What happened to Mairi's eyes? There was a cryptic comment during Lyall's flashback.
Overall, I did enjoy the story though I feel it is too long.
I really liked this book. It was a historical romance with some leeway for actual events; however this did not detract from the story in any way. Plot was interesting, description was awesome. The only part that at times irked me was that the main character continuously did silly things to escape from her 'love interest'. Given the time the book was set, it would have been foolhardy to do most of these regardless whether she had led an unprotected life, she was not very worldly. Some may find this credible. I like my women characters to be smart and strong.
The story was set in 12th century Scotland, beginning with a birth of triplets(daughters) to the Queen, near to a battlefield. She does not survive childbirth and for the princesses' protection they are separated and brought up without revealing their real identity to them or anyone other than the three trusted King's men, who arrange it all in absence of the King, who is exiled to England.
The main character, Glenna, is the eldest daughter who has had to be very resourceful to survive as a peasant due to the early death of her noble protector.Times are very tough and she steals to survive, along with her supposed siblings. She finds out that they are not her siblings and she is the King's daughter on coming of age and being removed from her isolated island home by a noble who says he is Baron Montrose. He lies and tells her that he was sent to take her to her father. He has another agenda and this is revealed much later in the book.
They have many adventures fraught with danger and betrayal before their love triumphs. Despite the main female character's occasional foolish 'escapes', this is an interesting and entertaining read.
I enjoyed the storyline. It kept me captivated but I had too many struggles finishing it to give it more than 2 stars.
There were a lot of grammatical errors though. Too much of a pet peeve of mine to ignore when character’s names and titles are being misspelled several times, quotes begin and don’t end or start when nothing is being said out loud at all, sentences have no distinguishing end, etc. Some details went on too long as well that I found myself skipping over paragraphs describing a location or feeling on and on for pages at a time.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and I look forward to reading the rest of this series. I have to tell you that I thought about not going work so I could finish this book. 😊 The characters were engaging and Glenna could be quite entertaining. I have to say that o didn't much like Lyall in the beginning. He was much more likeable after he admitted he was in love.
I enjoyed the story and the characters but I felt like it didn't flow as well as it could have. This may be my fault because I have recently been reading a lot of award winning books with really good writing and this is just a little romance. This won't keep me from reading more of her books in the future though. The characters and the story really were good.
A good historical novel is a good read. This one is a great read. The characters are strong but flawed. The history is very interesting and accurate . . . Except for the invention of triplets. Treat yourself. As for me, I cannot wait to read the sister's stories.
I Love period novels and this author can certainly write to keep your interest. I want to read the fate of the other two sisters and hopefully the next books will have a bit more of the humor the author usually use on her books.
I didn’t catch this new series by Barnett until recently. I’ve always enjoyed her writing. This did mot grab me which may be more indicative of factors external to the book. Enjoyable enough to finish though.
This book is full of excitement, adventure and surprise. Beautifully descriptive, and fun to read. Lovely animal companions, and great descriptions of people and settings. Action packed.
I really liked this story and the characters. But I took away one star, because there were so many errors in the writing - mostly typos and a few grammatical errors. It annoyed me every time I came across one. The author needs to find a better editor!
I liked the story--a little long and lots of detail not always relevant. However, I think Jill Barnett needs a new editor or proofreader. It is very distracting to read a book filled with so many errors!
Not what I thought this book would be when I read the excerpt from the book before. She was a thief with two brothers. She didn't know she was royalty.
