After a quiet six months, Gwen, Arthur, and Merlin are in the middle of preparing for their first Yule and Christmas together when an old friend appears to announce she needs their help. Morgana’s Sisters and their new allies are summoning the Saxon god Woden to gather up all the lost souls in his Wild Hunt on the night of the winter solstice, and the ghost who knows the truth about the Paladin’s Prophecy is destined to be one of them. Can Gwen and the others rescue him and stop the summoning in time for Christmas?

‘Twas the Knight Before Christmas by Hermione Moon The Avalon Café #5
In what may be the final book of this series Arthur and Gwen are happily married, Gwen is six months pregnant, they are getting ready for Christmas and everything seems perfect. And then Arthur’s sister shows up needing their help to thwart an enemy. Arthur is more interested in keeping Gwen safe than taking on a quest to save England, but it seems they must assist and so they do. With the assistance of Immi and Christian, Matthew and Hollie, and Merlin the magical dog the group begins their search for a magical stone needed to prevent an evil doer. On their quest they visit many historical sites, and I learned a few things about the history and places of England. This was a fun cozy mystery series with mythology, magic, history, romance, good thwarting evil, witches and warlocks, pagan leanings, and so much more. I would recommend reading them in order so that you get the full benefit of the build up to the finale.
Thank you to the author for the ARC- This is my honest review.
This was a brilliant conclusion to the series that I keep wanting to read more of! I love how the story progressed through the series, both in contemporary time and in terms of the legend of King Arthur being incorporated into it. The quests and historical figures were a bonus. A very enjoyable series.
this was a good conclusion to the story but I don’t feel like it was enough. everything seemed to be resolved very quickly and i didn’t have enough time to absorb anything that was really going on.
regardless, i really love the family dynamic between all the characters and how they are always there for one another.
I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review; and I loved it!
Right off the bat, that's what I want to say. This book is a lovely wrap-up to the ongoing series mystery, the white ghost legend, the love story of Arthur and Gwen that spans centuries. It re-introduces Morgana as someone who's actually likeable and to be trusted, loved even, and it gives us a brief glimpse into the future as well. I hope we get to see more of that future in the actual future, too!
The beauty of this book is that is really does justice to juxtaposing Arthur as a man out of time with Christian, who is very much a product of modern day. Throughout the book, Arthur tries to insist Gwen stays behind because of her pregnancy, and that he needs to protect her, but she puts her foot down and, gently but firmly, explains that she's not a glass doll and this is HER heritage too. Her mission. Yes, he will protect her when time calls for it, but she also needs to protect herself, and her children's future. In contrast to this, Christian doesn't even blink when Immy decides she's doing something dangerous, but shrugs and goes along with it to be there when needed.
It's a rather interesting look and I thought it was nicely done. We also get some inklings that maybe everyone has been together in a past life before judging by some of the skills they pick up along the way, but honestly, it's just an enjoyable, history and magic packed story.
It's a rather fitting ending because we tie a nice bow on the entire present of it, and leave them all in a happy place of anticipation, which is what Christmas is all about.
Especially this year.
So if you need some cheer, pick up this series, pick up this book, and lose yourself for a bit in what King Arthur might have gotten up to in modern day!
I didn't think the author would be able to pull this off. I felt that she made this "thing" too large, that there was no way she was getting this genie back in it's bottle. I was wrong. She did so in such a way that I felt satisfied. The ending was perfect and all the loose ends tied up nicely with a big giant bow.
The dark tone that ruined books 3 and 4 for me was mostly gone. Yes, it was still there but there was also a lighter hopeful tone to the book. The book was more light than dark. I loved seeing the developing relationship between Holly and Matthew. Loved seeing his evolution. He's now a character that I can see being part of their inner circle.
I got a little bored and annoyed with all the traipsing through British history in this book. Then I realized that's because it's not my history. As an American whose ancestry is the Basque region of Spain, I don't particularly care to dig that deeply into British history. Sorry...not sorry...meh... lol. I actually skimmed over a good part of it. I did enjoy seeing the ghostly figures of history. That was fun! I just didn't like the pages and pages of descriptions of historical sites.... boring... zzzzz.
It didn't remove my enjoyment of this book though!
Arthur was trying so hard to be a modern day man but he can't help that he's rooted in the past. The differences between how he approached Gwen and the way Christian approach Imogene was interesting. I'm not some raging feminist so I didn't get mad about it. I just found it interesting and kudos to the author for showing this.
The final battle and what happened at the end of it made me cry. What? It's early morning and the day after my birthday, I'm emotional! LOL. It was so sweet and perfect and just awwww.
I finished this book with a happy heart and a smile on my face. It was perfection and a 5-star rating. So glad that this series ended with me feeling the same way I felt about it when I read books 1 and 2.
A lovely story, a great climax to the series, although I hope there are still more to come! It is right before Christmas, and Gwen is almost seven months’ pregnant - with twins. She is at home cooking a trial recipe of gingerbread mince pies when she see someone in the kitchen with her ... and he is too short and fat to be her husband Arthur! It is a ghost, she recognises as Bernard Richards, who had been a librarian and died on the night of her wedding. He is trying to show her something which looks like the Alfred Jewel, a famous relic of King Alfred the Great. Then Arthur’s sister Hollie turns up, in the past she was Morgana, and is a powerful witch.
They are all aware that it will be the winter solstice in a couple of days, and the Prime Minister of England, Cedric King - a powerful wizard - is planning a summoning, which he intends to use it for dark magic, to help him find the Grail and gain eternal life. They decide, after much argument, to go to the Ashmolean museum in Oxford to see whether Gwen will learn anything from the Alfred Jewel. Arthur doesn’t want her to go because of her condition, but he gets outvoted. They will leave the next morning, but their group gets larger as Imogen and Christian, their friends, decide to come with them to help, and Hollie arrives the next morning with Matthew Hopkins, who neither Gwen or Arthur like.
The little gang set off, and run into trouble at the museum, but also Gwen is given another clue, leading them to London. They seem to be off on a dangerous wild goose chase, following the clues given to Gwen until they reach the final destination, where the evil is going to take place.
Hermione has carried out a great deal of research for this story, and it is very interesting, tying ancient legends together and providing information about several historical monuments. There are many twists and turns, and at the climax the gang receives help from surprising sources. Gowen’s magical powers continue to grow.
This a good story, with a well thought through plot and a sweet and triumphant ending. Very enjoyable and well worth reading.
Oh my Goddess, where do I even begin with this book and series. Hermione Moon (aka Serenity Woods) decided she wanted to go in a different direction in genres with her writing, now her loyal fans might have been a bit worried that we would never see her true self that we all love in her romance books come out in a paranormal genre, or at least I was because it’s not a genre I normally read. So the fan that I am of this author, I embarked on that first book, and I was floored on how amazing it was, which has brought me to the final book in this incredible series, Twas the Knight before Christmas, and what an intense, emotional, well written, well thought out book it was. The amount of research it took to write this series is mind boggling, I mean authors do it all the time when they are this good, but the history lesson you are taken through is nothing short of amazing. Loved the characters, loved the storyline, loved the setting, loved everything about this book, except one thing, it’s the last book in this incredible series, but oh what a ride it’s been. Gwen and Author have quickly become two of my favorite characters from this author, throw in the side characters with Imogen, Christian, Hollie and Matthew (who would have thought), and you have the makings of a series of 5 books that takes you on an incredible journey of King Author and Guinevere that you never realized existed. Added bonus is the paranormal twist to the story, which makes for some pretty nail biting reading well past your bedtime. You’d be doing a disservice to yourself if you didn’t read this series. All five stories are difficult to put down books that will keep you turning the pages until you get to the end. Definitely worth the read.
‘Twas the Knight before Christmas by Hermione Moon, book five in The Avalon Café series, was another delightful and intriguing cozy mystery. After six amazing months of marital life Gwen, Arthur, and Merlin are preparing for their first Christmas together, before their twins are born, when they are interrupted by a friend in need of help. Morgana’s Sisters along with their allies are summoning the Saxon god Woden; asking that he collect all the last souls during his Wild Hunt on the night of the winter solstice. All of the portals to the afterlife have been locked so no souls are able to leave England. It is their belief that the ghost who knows the truth about the Paladin’s Prophecy will be among them. Gwen and Arthur are joined by their best friends and Arthur’s sister and one other as they travel toward London and its surroundings in order to stop this summoning in time for Christmas. During their travels we, the reader, learn a great deal about the history of England and additional information about many famous people who, over time, resided on her shores; traveling back in time through Gwen’s visions.
Once again, Gwen and Arthur’s past and future are tied to this case. Ms. Moon created a story that is full of enchantment, legends, along with the perfect mix of suspense, sweet romance and magic. I was so caught up in the story that I kept reading, finishing this book in one sitting. I highly recommend ‘Twas the Knight before Christmas to other readers.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.
'Twas the Knight Before Christmas (Avalon Café #5) is a wonderful conclusion-for-now to the Avalon Café Series by Hermione Moon. The series began as a paranormal cozy mystery but this book in particular descends into the world of fantasy where good battles evil. Past, present, and future collide in this story of winter solstice and Yule time. There is history, druid mythology and a twist or two in the telling of the King Arthur legend. How it all fits together is amazing really. It is difficult to read this story without being just a little bit jealous of Gwen with her Arthur. So this is a story with a hero and heroine worthy of admiration.
Gwen, Arthur, and Merlin along with Holly, Imogen and Christian must stop a diabolical plan that will go into effect during the winter solstice. If you have been reading the series you know where the danger is coming from as well as how it relates to one ghost and others who will be used to bring it all to be. If not, well, the author tries to bring the reader up to speed with the background. However, if you are new to the series reading the fourth book I think would enhance the enjoyment of this one. I have loved this series so I can highly recommend reading all.
As for me, now I am hoping that Arthur, Gwen, and others will have another story in the future. Especially for Holly and Matthew, who deserve a story or two too.
The publisher/author gave me a complimentary ARC of the book which I voluntarily chose to read and reviewed. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Oh my goodness, Hermione Moon, you have really surpassed yourself with this one, I loved it. Gwen Young is a baker, she is also a witch from a long line of witches, she bakes her spells to do good into her cakes, recently she has extended her powers, Gwen is married to Arthur, a reborn King Arthur. The English Prime Minister, wicked Cedric King, a reincarnation of King Cedric is out to find Woden's Woe, a jewel that will lead him to the Holy Grail and the power that comes with it but he must find it before the winter solstice and time is running out. Arthur's sister Hollie, also a witch, is out to stop him and she engages the help of pregnant Gwen, Arthur, Gwen's best friend also pregnant Imogen a DCI , her husband Christian and lastly, much to Arthur's annoyance, Mathew Hopkins, a journalist who has locked horns with Gwen on many occasions but has recently learned that he is in fact a warlock and who has begun an affair with Hollie. I can't even begin to describe the exciting journey they follow, the prominent people from the past that materialise to assist Gwen, the author very cleverly weaves fantasy with fact and her knowledge of the history of medieval and modern England is outstanding. This is an enchanting story, complete escapism, it also gives an informative look into the history of Britain and it's monarchy, pomp and pageantry.........oh, and has a very exciting ending. I received a free advanced copy of this book and I am leaving a voluntary review.
I don't think I have ever used the word captivating about a book I have read before now. Absolutely 4.5 stars. This book should not be read as a standalone. There are no real cliffhangers in each book. Each book does build on the I formation from the previous book. I have to say that each book is totally worth the read.
The historical aspect, the magic, the season, the location, the winter weather, all intertwine to make this a captivating tale.
I liked how Gwen, Arthur, and all of their friends banded together to try and defeat an evil aspect that they weren't completely sure they had the power to defeat. Arthur and Merlin were so protective of Gwen. Charles and Immi had as much to lose, but were willing to take the chance.
The story was full of romance. There was even a romantic aspect to Hollie and Gwen's time travel scene as well as the scene with Herne. It was all larger than life, suspenseful, and intense at the same time. This was more than an HEA associated with a romantic relationship. This was an all encompassing HEA.
I voluntarily read and reviewed the Advanced Reader Copy of this book.
This is an exhilarating, epic magical fight against evil. There are thrills, chills, famous ghosts, and a magical treasure hunt across England! I love the realism of the geography and actual historical places and artifacts mixed with Arthurian legends and exciting fantasy elements. The stakes are high and the enemy is resourceful. The characters are warm and lovable. The relationship between Gwen and Arthur is full of respect, support, and love. The steam level is very low, just kissing. I love everything about this book.
This fifth novel might be the last book in the series; at least Hermione Moon is not writing any more right now. It seems like Gwen and Arthur could have further adventures in the future. This book ends at a lovely spot where no one is in danger. This unique cozy paranormal mystery series is the best that I have ever read. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves cozy mysteries and/or fantasy novels. The series must be read in order.
I received a free advanced reading copy from the author, and I voluntarily wrote this honest review.
This was another enjoyable read. Again, there were a few instances where the language felt a little flippant (Arthur comparing journalist Matthew to Hitler, really?), and it was very pro-Churchill/the Monarchy/other figureheads, so much so that I felt the book was written for a tourist by a tourist (dogs, for example, are allowed on the London Underground). All the major events seemed to happen at locations you'd see in a 'Top 10 of Things to Do in England' list on TripAdvisor, and most of the book seemed to take place on what came across as one long guided tour. The magic was even more fantastical in this instalment, however, and it was nice and Christmassy, which is great for this time of year. The ending was also a nice touch. I found Arthur and Gwen's relationship a little bit same-y, and Arthur was flat as ever, though I do like how all the plot threads wove together. I'm giving this book 5 stars instead of 4 because I loved the series as a whole, and would recommend it to any Arthurian or Charmed fan.
Whew, I feel like I have been on an amazing, wild, intense roller coaster ride through the world of magic! This is not my usual genre but these books are so good and romantic and well-written that I have loved them all. You really should read them in order because the plot builds in each story until they reach an amazing crescendo in this book. Plus, the love and history and commitment between King Arthur (or warrior as he insists) and the love of his 1500 year existence Gwen is perfect. In The Knight Before Christmas, they are finally married and getting ready for Christmas and the upcoming birth of twins when all hell breaks lose (literally) and they and their friends and reincarnated dog take a wild ride through English history to try to find the magic to stop a truly evil character who was starting to develop in the earlier books. It was exciting, fun, magical, scary, romantic, sassy and wonderful. You cannot miss this story.
Gwen is baking when she's visited by Bernard, he's trying to send a message but until Hollie turns up and explains that Cedric King is planning to use the power of the souls which have been prevented from reaching the summerlands to activate the TRI clock on the winter solstice.
They have very limited time to trace Woden's Woe and stop him.. but they are not sure what they are looking for.. Gwen, Arthur and Merlin, Imogen and Christian, Hollie and... Matthew.. set off for the Ashmolean following Gwen's vision of Bernard showing her the Alfred Jewel.. and so begins a chase through history to trace the current whereabouts of the precious item to prevent Cedric from becoming immortal, gaining the Holy Grail and unleashing untold pain and suffering on the world.. and with Gwen and Imogen both 6 months pregnant they really are risking their all.
5 Star review Twas The Knight Before Christmas (The Avalon Cafe # 5) by Hermione Moon
I have been loving this cozy mystery witch series from Hermione Moon. The characters are fun an quirky and the mysteries that they become embroiled in are interesting and entertaining. I was captivated by the story that Ms.Moon wove as I tried to guess what was going to happen and who the guilty party was.
There were some surprises and quite a few twists and turns as witch Gwen, Arthur become involved in yet another mystery. This will be there first Christmas together, let’s hope it won’t be their last.
When a ghost asks Gwen for help, will she be able to rescue him and stop the evil that is rising? These characters are engaging and you cannot help but become invested in the story that Ms Moon weaves as you follow the clues.

Overall this read was a satisfying conclusion to the series...it just didn't hit the same book feels that the first few reads did. It's really weird because I enjoyed the read, but there was a fair bit of things happening that felt like unnecessary fluff.
I think it stems from the fact that if this was a standalone read it would be this great quick and easy time to relax read. But it's not. I figure my response to this read is part the way I imagined things would go based off the first 2 books, and also partly my overall mood when reading this.
You're likely as confused about this all as I am. Basically, it's a good read from an author I enjoy and if you're reading this book you've read the other parts of the series. So it'll just tie it all up neat and with a bow.
This story had a great blend of history and magic. Hermione Moon’s story telling makes me want to visit England and all the historical sites that Gwen and Arthur have visited. During this story, Arthur, Gwen, Merlin, and some of their friends are looking for a magical amulet. They are in a race against the evil prime minister and his followers. Gwen gets some help from some significantly important people from England’s history. This is a cozy mystery series, but I learned so much about English history, and it was fun! Some of their friends are magical, like Hollie and Matthew, but their good friends Immi and Christian aren’t magical and are there for them nonetheless. I’m so sad this is the last full story of Arthur and Gwen. I’ve enjoyed their journey immensely and hope to see some future novellas. I received an ARC from the author. This is my honest review.
WOW!! This story was full of twists & turns, red herrings, plenty of magic. and lots of history. Gwen and gang have a couple of days to find a magical item called Woden's Woe or evil will prevail. Gwen and Imogene are six months pregnant but that doesn't stop them from doing all they can to prevent a catastrophic event. Married life is bliss for Arthur and Gwen but the evil of Cedric King hangs over them. As they try to find Woden's Woe, they encounter obstacles, dead-ends, and strange events. This story is well-written with likable, fully-developed characters, and an engaging plot that grabbed my interest from the beginning and never let go. I urge you to read the entire Avalon Cafe Series.
Hollie requests Gwen and Arthur’s help in stopping Cedric King from succeeding in his diabolical plan for Winter’s Solstice. Arthur is initially concerned and against participating because Gwen is six months pregnant with their twins. To stop Cedric, they need to find Woden’s Woe before he does. I received a free copy of this ebook from the author. This is my honest and voluntarily given review. I am really enjoying this series. I love how Gwen encounters people from England’s history while following clues. I also love the strong and loving relationship between Gwen and Arthur. A mixture of the magical, the mythical, and a cozy mystery create a fun read.
Another amazing read from Ms Moon. I love these characters and I have to say by the end of the book, even Matthew was growing on me.
In this book, the unlikely bunch, including a heavily pregnant Gwen, Arthur, Christian, and Imogen, travel the countryside to solve yet another mystery. At times I was blown away by the intricacies of the story. There was so much history involved and so many twists and turns.
I would recommend this series to anyone looking for a cozy mystery with some romance and history thrown in.
I received an ARC of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
'Twas the Knight Before Christmas is book 5 of The Avalon Cafe series. Gwen, Arthur and Merlin are back, preparing for Christmas and awaiting the birth of Twins. Hollie's arrival marks the continuing battle against evil that has been building in the previous books. This book is packed with the incredible characters that feature throughout all these books as well as some unexpected new ones. A beautiful blend of fiction and legend and wonderful writing make this a book, and series, that I absolutely love. I cannot recommend it highly enough. Worth 5* and more.
A brilliant fifth instalment to the Avalon Cafe series and I hope there will be more to come. Gwen is 6 months pregnant with twins and preparing for the winter festivities but Cedric is using all his power and resources to find her and Arthur.
When Hollie turns up on their doorstep only a few days before the Winter Solstice Gwen and Arthur know that something is wrong. When they hear that Cedric plans to use Woden’s Woe to harvest the lost souls and become a God the three of them along with Merlin, Imogen, Christian and Matthew go on a hunt to find the relic first.
Complete with some hold your breath moments this book was a lovely addition to the series and leaves you with a warm feeling.
Historical Mystery Tour. This was a fun story with Gwen and friends racing to Oxford, all around London and Windsor trying to locate a jewel which Cedric King wants to use for evil purposes. History, famous persons and ancient lore abound in this sparkling tale. Whilst this could be read as a standalone, I would recommend reading this series in order, particularly the one which immediately precedes this one “Her Wedding Knight”. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book from the author. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
‘Twas the Knight Before Christmas finds Gwen pregnant with twins and the winter solstice during which Cedric King promised would unleash his evil plans (see book 4, Her Wedding Knight) is rapidly approaching. It is up to Gwen, Arthur, Merlin, Imogene, Christian and a most unexpected tag along to save the world from the forces of darkness. Fans of the series don’t want to miss this episode. Hermione Moon includes a lot of historical references that are sure to intrigue her readers as the past blends with the present to create an unforgettable story. Most highly recommend.
I never cease to be amazed at the story plots! I simply love reading them! The latest of the series is so captivating as every one before it. And i love the Christmas theme! I intend to re read it again in December! It’s the perfect cozy Christmas book! I don’t intend to add spoilers so i am just gonna stick to the fact that if you decide to pick this book, be prepared to just make time to read it that day cause you will definitely be hooked! Yup it’s that good! Hermione Moon never disappoints! 😁
Oh man, this book was so good, and knowing it was the last in the series, I had to work hard to not read it in one sitting! Hermione Moon can tell a story!!! She can portray such complex emotions and make characters so three dimensional, not all good, not all bad but varied and layered! Her knowledge of history and description of setting is unparalleled. I don't want to give anything in this story away, but I will say you will enjoy every second of the book, and the ending is extremely satisfying!!! I received an ARC and am writing this review voluntarily.
'Twas the Knight Before Christmas. Wow! I am blown away by this book! It was a great book! The characters were amazing and captured my heart. I wasn't expecting so much knowledge about the history of England and all the information about the kings and queens of yesteryear. I am now ready to go learn more. I didn't think I would be interested in this history, but Hermione Moon made it clear and fun to read about. I hope there will be more in the future with these characters because I enjoyed them. "I am volunteering to leave a review for an ARC of this book."
Best of series to date. So exciting to follow the main characters Gwen and Arthur once more. Lots of mystery, ghosts and magical twists in the story, which has us meeting many British historical figures throughout time. If anything it ended too soon. Lots more relationships to explore in the future. Hope Hermione keeps adding to this tale as old as time.
