Top notch compilation of art & making of the game Control, heavy on the 'making of'. The sheer volume of information packed into this is insane...absolutely the most detailed, in-depth video game book I've ever read. Each aspect of the game is meticulously broken down to give much more context into the decisions behind it. There's a ton of fascinating concept art. I am so impressed, and you can definitely tell how much love went into this!
An incredible, insightful, beautiful hardback with tonnes of both insights and interviews on the creation of Control as well as gorgeously painted concept art that goes into great detail on everything from design philosophy to storytelling to the (highly in-depth) technical lighting of scenes.
An extensive and insightful look at the design process behind an intriguing and distinctive game. There is an excellent balance between interesting character and environment art, and its creative and technological context, almost exclusively in the form of developer interviews and quotes. Unlike fluffier art- or making-of books, this was published far enough after the game’s release that there is also a good amount of material on the game’s reception and expansions, and the studio’s future goals.
An absolutely massive masterpiece. The Art and Making of Control is what every behind the scenes material should aspire to be. An exhaustive in-depth look into every single aspect of Control: initial meetings, story, art, environment, sound, graphics, casting, dlc. Everything. And not just explained through dozens of sketches, artwork, photos and screenshots because, as the title says, this is also a “making of” so it includes the equivalent amount of text to complement the pictures thanks to all the interviews to the workers of Remedy.
Reaching over 400 pages, I think there’s very little that could improve this. I’m glad they took the time to perfect this and not rush it. Like lots of Control fans, from Day 1 I knew I wanted to look behind the scenes of such an imaginative concept. Thanks to Future Press and Remedy because they truly delivered.
