As a person of more mature years myself, I thoroughly enjoyed reading a story about a couple that had a few years under their belts and all the baggage that marriage and kids bring to the table. I found both main characters very likeable and very real. This was a really easy to read book, it easily held my attention and definitely entertained. Reading it on public transport thought perhaps wasn't one of my better ideas - some of the scenes definitely weren't ones I wanted someone reading over my shoulder!

Amidst those very hot and sexy moments there were also some very funny (and sadly all to familiar) moments. Poor Ally was certainly put through the emotional wringer and possibly needed shares in kleenex. However, despite how much she cried, I always felt immense sympathy for her and never once felt irritated or frustrated. Whilst some of the issues arose from not being honest with one another regarding their worries, so many of us are guilty of exactly the same thing. Not voicing our fears, our wants, our dreams because it's so scary and might go so badly wrong, this was another aspect I could empathise with.

It's very minor but I did feel as though their baby sitter issues were very easily solved. If getting to Stronghold had fizzled out because it was too difficult with kids, a sudden decision to start going each week was, in reality, never going to hold water. However in the grand scheme of things it's a minor issue that I was happy to let go.

TL;DR - so to sum up it's a great book with enough realism to ring a bell with many of us. It has plenty of steam, a few laughs, some tears and a great couple who you will fall in love with as they reconnect and fall even deeper in love with one another.

Having read Logan and Henry’s story,i really needed to hear what Ray’s was,and when i got the ARC from Maren Smith,i was só happy! Knowing i could find out,and the only thing required was an honest review? I can do that!

What happens to a Master and his sub after the i do? And after having 3 children? Is their connection still as firm as in the beginning? Or is it sagging? Like the former Army Captain’s belly?

When Ray returns from his weekend,he decides the best way to start blowing new life into their kink,is to work on his condition. He used to be able to run 10 miles when he was in the army,so that’s where he starts. Even though it hurts like hell. Eating healthier. He is determined to get back into shape to be the Master his sub deserves.

Ally wonders why Ray is acting so strange ever since he got back from his weekend. She tries to find a good reason, but looking in the mirror only leaves one conclusion.....he is having an affair!. What to do? With 3 young children, she knows she doesn’t look as good as she used to.
Giving him a reason to look elsewhere.
Even though she knows she should talk to him about it,she’s worried he’ll only confirm her suspicions.

Ray dóes notice something’s up with Ally, but when he asks her about it,she evades a clear answer. Telling him she has her hands full with the kids, and feels the house is a mess. Suggesting a maid makes matters worse. Her attempts at drawing his attention backfire and end up with punishment. Is there any way these two can find a way back to eachother?

Ray and Ally’s story had me in tears. Ray means well, but fails at attempting to understand why Ally is shutting him out. And Ally is stuck in her head too much, instead of building up the courage to talk to Ray. Her worries growing out of control. They both needed the basic rule, badly: communication.

This was a story that only Maren can write, the tlc (not so tender at some points, but still😉) she gave these two is so beautiful. I loved it!

(I was glad to see i was right about a very familiar club😊)

I'm a big fan of Maren Smith books in general and so I was THRILLED when she agreed to do the Dad Bod Doms collection!

Ray and Ally were hilarious in their all-too-understandable misunderstandings, the steamy scenes were hot af, and I was honored that she wanted them to visit Stronghold as part of their story.

Four friends, determined to breathe life back into their marriages and get themselves back in shape. Ray used to be a lean, mean, lovin' machine back in the military days, but marriage, a beautiful wife and 3 kids has basically made him let things go. What starts out as wanting to get himself in shape turns into something he never dreamed would happen. A hurt and jealous wife. Not that he'd ever given her any reason to be jealous because he loves Ally more than anything. The tension between Ray and Ally is there, you can feel it as you read. The anguish is real for Ally and it's going to take Ray opening up and listening to his wife. Communication is a two way street so Ally is going to have to open up also. Can they do it? I loved these two and reading their story broke my heart in some ways, make me laugh in others. Can Ray and Ally make it back to where they were before? Well, get the book and find out!

The 3rd book in this series of authors. And it was pretty fast pace and steamy.

All these couples trying to balance there bdsmish life after kids and all that. And Ray his problem was he though he was bigger and wasn't happy with his self image and with that he made a goal to lose the weight but he didnt inform his wife why he wanted to do it. Making Ally doubt herself and everything she thought she did and think her husband is having an affair since he never been this active in exercise in awhile. I loved that Ally did try to spice things up.. even if many of the ideas went badly.. Sometimes I didnt believe Ray truly showed Ally he loved her, in his pov yes it showed but his actions were meh. I wanted him to hug her show her that she was his (like come on dude).  This couple needed communication time because both were to stubborn to tell the other their problems. I kinda wish they talked more.

No ow/om drama, no cheating, slight secondary character, drama (relationship wise), sexy time, no virgins

The blurb was great and I was looking forward to this marriage romance where there was no cheating but sone insecurities about their relationship after eight years and three kids.
I liked Ray’s POV that showed his love and vulnerability for Ally, but he never showed that side to her. Yeah, I got that he was the Dom and called all the shots, but I thought Ally gave up everything for him and he was too much in control for me to believe that she was special.
I found him cold in comparison to what he was going through internally. He treated her like a subordinate instead of a Dom who was focused on his sub.
While the scenes were consensual with steam, I felt zero romance and emotional affection from Ray. He was more honest and open with his buddies at their retreat than he was with Ally.

Ray went camping with his friends, and he decided to get his life back together, including getting out to go jogging and losing some weight. The problem is, his wife Ally is convinced that he's cheating on her because that's where her anxiety brain goes.

I totally relate to Ally because anxiety gets into my brain really easily too, and it's really hard to be a parent and a wife and a woman. I think that she's trying, but it's hard, and there's so much pressure on her.

I think Ray is really trying to do everything he can for his wife and family. I think that he thinks that he and Ally are talking, but they are generally kinda talking at cross purposes, and missing what the other is saying. And that's no one's fault. Neither one of them are mind readers or anything.

I really liked this one.

This is the third of four Dad Bod Doms books centering on four friends who find themselves in a middle-aged rut (professionally, personally, physically) and the steps they take to reinvigorate their relationships with their submissive wives. Each entry is a stand-alone in terms of the MC.

Because this is a series, each book features a different D/s dynamic and emphasizes different kinks. In this case, former BDSM-clubbers Ray and Ally are now married and living the prototypical middle-class life: job, house, and kids. Former army man Ray, however, has long been dissatisfied with his aging body and decides to take up jogging again to lose weight. Insecure Ally, in turn, immediately assumes that he's getting his body in shape for another woman. Neither feels comfortable voicing their insecurities to the other; the rest of the plot details their attempts to reconnect.

I had very mixed feelings about this book because much of the characters' behavior was inexplicable to me. So, let me say that if you're looking for consensual, well-described kink scenes (some of which take place in Stronghold, one of those fantasy BDSM clubs common in this genre) between an older, established couple underpinned by a realistic story with some depth, you may enjoy this. As always, Ms. Smith's prose is self-assured and flows well: alternately funny (Ray's epic fail with the pepper spray) and touching (Ally's very real fears).

That said, the central conflict in the book -- Ally's belief that her husband is having an affair -- strained disbelief given how little evidence she has and, though the author tried, I never understood her reasoning. Unlike his friends, their lives are actually pretty good: they enjoy their work (Ally is a happy stay-at-home mom), their children, and each other. While it's true that they miss their smexy times, there's nothing in the narrative that suggests that their marriage is so bad that it prohibits such basic exchanges as "Babe, I don't feel good about my body anymore and would like to lose weight so I'm going to go jogging early in the mornings. Don't get worried if you don't see me before breakfast." Or, "Honey, I think we should get out more, just the two of us. Maybe leave the kids with your mother and go to Stronghold like we used to." If you're so incapable of telling your spouse anything this simple, then your problems are too big for the BDSM magic bullet to fix, yet at no time does the story indicate that either has ever felt unhappy or unfulfilled in the marriage.

It's also really difficult to connect with either Ray or Ally, but this is, in part, my personal reaction to Ms. Smith's depiction of D/s dynamics. In almost all her books, her Doms are very cold, with a very clipped, precise manner of speaking and a preternatural calm that prevents any display of real emotion. I suspect the author's fantasy Dom is one who remains in control at all times, but this becomes problematic when we're supposed to believe that a character is hopelessly in love with his wife: Ray's internal monologues were much more heartfelt than almost anything he said to his wife.

While Ally is more likeable, she does little in this book except cry and apologize. She's one of Ms. Smith's fantasy sub creations: a straight man's wet dream who never says no, never sets limits, never calls red -- indeed, never refuses him anything. While I wouldn't exactly say that Ms. Smith's h's are doormats, they have little personalities since their wants, needs, and aspirations revolve around their H's. Ally is the perfect 1950s stay-at-mom & housewife, with no interest in anything outside her home and family. And, given that Ray doesn't ever interact with his children or do any chores around the house, her satisfaction with her life was inexplicable.

3 stars. Even given what I said above, I might have rated this more highly because it is consensual, but it contains two of my pet peeves in this genre: the double standard apparent in so many of these generic DD books (Ray insists on open communication, but doesn't tell his wife the truth about why he's jogging) and a dom spanking his sub when she's pregnant: I have no respect for any couple who would risk the health of either the mother or baby like this. YMMV.

Fabulous Addition to this series.

Loved every moment of this book. I really wish there would be a fifth book where the couples come together. This is not a stand alone. These books are best read in order.

What ever happened to the young Doms and subs? Life. I really encourage you to read the entire series.

My absolute favorite in the series thus far! This was a perfect blend of sexy and emotional and it all read very real and realistic. The story is wrapped in miscommunications, but it never read tiresome and I never once rolled my eyes. I rather enjoyed reading this couple’s navigation thru their hurdles and misgivings and was captivated by them and the story from page one! There is chemistry abound between them and I laughed myself silly on more than one occasion. Well done!

I have somewhat mixed feelings about this story. I very much like the overall premise of the series; how do BDSM couples adapt when they are growing older and have more and different responsibilities? It is actually a dilemma that applies to all couples, regardless of their sexual preferences. Ray and Ally are described as having a life they both really value. Each still loves the other partner, their children, their home, he is happy with his career and she is happy being a stay-at-home mom.

My problem is the conflict that drives the plot … each of them fails to communicate at all with the other about something important that is bothering them. Ray is upset that he has gotten fat and out of shape, but instead of telling her that outright, he just starts slipping out of bed at daybreak to jog, which is an activity she knows that he loathes. For her part, Ally immediately jumps to the conclusion that he is either having an affair or is contemplating one. She has no foundation to base that on except for her own insecurities. A 5 minute conversation between them would have prevented all of the conflict. It is especially ironic because communication is supposed to be the key to BDSM.

The writing skill of the author is what saved this book for me. The internal monologues of both Ray and Ally are excellent. There are some incredibly funny scenes, including a couple of his first disastrous jogging outings, and her spectacularly awkward attempt at phone sex. The intimate scenes between them are also extremely electric . Overall, the book was very well-written, but the plot could have been stronger. I would say read and enjoy it for the entertainment value that it definitely delivers, and don’t overthink it much.

The writing and editing of the ARC version of the manuscript was clean, with no typos that I found and well constructed sentences and paragraphs. The world building was quite good in this contemporary novel. The characterization was well done, with both hero and heroine having strengths and weaknesses as people in a relationship. I found the heroine deeply unsympathetic for a lot of reasons. The development of the romantic relationship was natural and organic. The plot and pacing were all right, though I found it a little slow. There was very high angst and very low stakes in this romance, which meant I struggled with this story. The main reason I gave this novel a combined rating of three stars, however, has to do with the fact that all the conflict in this story sprang from the Refusal to Honestly Communicate trope, which happens to be the one trope in romance novels that this reader hates with the passion of a thousand burning suns. The world building, plot and pacing were all four stars. The characterization and development of the romantic relationship were also four stars. However, the fact that all the conflict in this story was based on the Refusal to Honestly Communicate meant that I gave this novel a combined rating of three stars. This novel had a Happy Ever After ending instead of a cliffhanger, so that was a plus. I recommend this novel to readers who enjoy bad communicators as romance novel protagonists. I really liked the series concept, so it is sad that I found this installment so disappointing. I do not plan to buy myself a keeper copy.

This is the third story in a series where 4 Dads make a pact to reconnect and revitalise their middle aged rut they have fallen into. This book is the first one I have read, but can definitely be read as a stand alone. I found the premise of getting stuck in a rut after 8 years of marriage to be a realistic and relatable prospect, and I could relate to each of their insecurities and buy into the lack of communication - a common theme especially where bdsm is involved, the importance of this is paramount! I did find Ally’s lack of common sense to be be frustrating however and her resistance to just asking Ray what was happening with him seemed a bit contrived to me. I also found Ray hard to connect to, as he didn’t appear to be overtly affectionate to his wife and the chemistry between the two seemed somewhat lacklustre. The flow of writing was good and this is a fast paced read with some great scenes described at the bdsm club, so readers of this genre may still enjoy it. Overall I’d be interested to take a look at the other books in the series.

Any book that can leave me gasping for breath because I was laughing so hard is going to get a lot of leeway from me. I said it before, after encountering Penelope Bloom’s “The Golden Pecker”: BDSM romantic comedy? This book really defies all expectations. It’s steamy and sensual while also being laugh-out-loud funny. For the most part, I found Ray and Ally to be endearing characters, and the habits they’d slipped into were familiar and easy to relate to. Having been to the place that Ally’s insecurities kept suggesting, I found the depiction of the way her irrational fears overruled all her common sense to be very realistic, and unfortunately also very familiar. It may be true to life, but their inability to discuss what was going on with each other frustrated the living daylights out of me. It came as a great relief to me when all that tension finally broke. If the other books in this series have a similar tongue-in-cheek view of the Lifestyle in middle age, I’m desperately looking forward to reading them because, apparently, I’m now a fan of BDSM romantic comedy.

Not my usual read and I went in with no expectations. It was alright for me. I think that writing was superb but I found that I did not quite connect with the characters and a lot of the issues these characters faced could and would have been solved with the least being communication. Yep that is all that was called for within these pages. Now other than that fact the story needed to be told and the author did a good job with her characters.

Wow. What a very moving and emotional story. Ray and Ally were doing okay when Ray decided to start running and eating healthy because he had put on weight and lost his abs. Since he had told Ally he had a new client, she put two and two together and assumed he was going to leave her. What she should of done was talk to him and find out why he was running again when he hated it. It just goes to prove communicating is the key. Enjoy their journey back to the basics.

3.5 Second chance BDSM romance

No plot spoilers
No real potential triggers
There are a few grammatical errors that totally irritated (course instead of coarse for example) but they don't kill the book.
It always speaks volumes to me when an author can't be bothered ensuring the errors are removed, I usually feel insulted, and that's no different on this occasion. Still, they are not on every page by any means so it is possible to ignore them.
There are a few BDSM sex scenes, some of them quite heavy so if the kink isn't your genre don't buy the book.
It's often an emotionally journey, but although the characterisation is quite good, I found there was something indefinable missing.
The plotline is engaging, and I was moved to tears on more than one occasion as they began their journey to reconnect. There are some funny scenes too, which lightened the angst considerably.
I thought the male lead slightly too removed to be utterly believable, and often a little too harsh for her.
If you enjoy the genre you would probably enjoy the book.

Getting the collection back

This is the third book in the series about four men who've last the spark in their marriages and decide to fix things. Ray decides to start with losing weight and his wife thinks he's cheating. Makes sense. She then lets her thoughts spiral out of control. Her actions are a little over the top and Ray should have figured out something was wrong faster. There should have been a heart to heart discussion before they went to stronghold and he should have been there to support her while she broke down. She developed the doubts on her own but he should have been there while she figured things out instead of alone. They could have then reconnected in the scene. 3.5 stars.

I am still surprised how people let their imagination fly instead of communicating with each other.
Good story, could be longer.

I enjoyed this book and it has a great message about communication however Henry is still my favourite in this series. Ray comes home from the men only camping trip determined to both lose weight and to bring back the BDSM lifestyle to his marriage. From there it becomes a comedy of errors. Ray thinks he looks as if he is many months pregnant so he returns to an activity that he hates, running. He felt he had done his fair share of it in the army. His first run finds him fighting off dogs and his second run has him trying to pepper spray the dogs but he accidentally sprays himself. Each time he returns home sweaty and exhausted. Ally is worried because she can’t understand why Ray is running which he hates and she knows that Ray knows that she likes him as he is. So why is he trying to get fit...must be another woman he wants to impress. Probably one of his clients. She tries to spice up their love life but everything she tries backfires spectacularly. I couldn’t really understand why she was so sure he was having an affair because they do a great deal of love making and a man who is tired of his wife would likely save it for his mistress. I laughed in many places but I didn’t feel emotionally drawn to the characters but it sure makes the reader realize that full and honest communication is very necessary in a happy marriage or to keep a marriage happy.

Oooh, these Dad Bod Dom story’s are just keeping it at a high level of storyline. Each one is just as good as the one before it. In Ray’s story, he’s headed home with the best intentions to get his marriage back on track. He’s determined to get off those extra pounds and get back his pre-dad Bod. He’s even named his tummy the “Gestation” Mmmh, image that! He’s ex Military so he thinks this will be a cake less walk in the park. It’s nice to know that even a Dom has to start off with baby steps😂 His wife Ally has started to freak out when he starts his new regime. And, she spirals down the rabbit hole from there. This book first off is about love, honesty and communication and what a huge role that plays into a successful marriage.
Maren Smith is on a roll in her books and she adds another hit with this one. If BDSM is not your thing, you might not want to read this. Even so, there are basic elements that speak to all of us when we let life get in the way of spending quality time with your spouse. Reading this book has given me a few ideas how to maybe take my own relationship into a better direction.

Dad Bod Doms: Ray’ is the humorous, witty and yet very realistic story of two people who have forgotten to nurture their connection to each other because life happened, children came along and routine set in.
Ray is not happy about his body or his sex life anymore and wants to get both back in shape. But breaking his routine by exercising and eating heathy without talking to his wife about why, sets a whole chain of misadventures in motion that are as humorous in their execution as they are devastating in the reasons behind them, with both parties trying to save a marriage that doesn’t need saving and without communicating their fears, wants and needs.
This book is awesome. It is extremely well written, has amazing characters and the plot is very well executed. It is emotional and sexual, hot and spicy, tense and intense, yet sweet, heartwarming and funny. And it is something almost everybody can relate to, because at some point we all fall victim to the routine of everyday-life and dream about putting the spark back in our relationship.

I really like the premise of this series that's being written by a group of some of my favorite authors. All relationships as they mature change and how they partners communicate to each other is key to a solid relationship. Communication is especially key in s D/s relationship and that's where these two had some challenges. Ray and Ally have been life and lifestyle partners for a number of years and in that time they've had 3 children, settled into Homelife, work, etc. Ray decides to lose some weight and get back his young bod and Ally thinks it's because he's having an affair. This was the challenge for me. Why Ray didn't say to Ally "I need to lose a few pounds" or why didn't Ally say :Whats up with the early morning jogs"? Simple questions, simple answers. But because of the settling into their home life, their D/s life was just settled in as well. The characters are well written, the storyline compelling and fast paced. This is the kind of book I expect for Maren Smith. Great Read.

I received an ARC from the author thru Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving my review. Ray is a happily married man who realizes that he wants to get back what he and his wife had before life got in the way. He believes that has to start with himself. While he has set himself on a path to betterment, he does not include his wife in this goal. He truly is doing it for her and their love. Ally sees the changes in her husband but assumes that he is doing this for himself and another woman. She is heartbroken that she may be losing her husband. They do not communicate well and this causes a lot of of their issues. Although Ray wants to rekindle that fire, first he will have to convince Ally he is doing this because he values their relationship. I thought this was such a real story and could happen to any couple. It made the characters and storyline resonate with you. I look forward to reading more in this series

This one had it all...and SO many laughs

I LOVED this story so much...how could I not when Maren combined married life, romance, kink and laughter!?!

I couldn't help but laugh and cringe along with Ally and Ray as incident after accident continued to befall them in their quest to improve themselves and their marriage without actually working together.

I of course loved the kink in their relationship and how they clearly thrived and worked best as a team in a D/s relationship and mindset. Their scenes were HOT.

Most of all I loved that they were real...a married couple I could relate to, situations that are true to life and their individual and couple struggles that again seemed like something and of us could experience.

Thanks for the laughs and the steam Maren, it was a great read!

This is a fantastic story! I love reading anything by this author. I love this premise of what happens after a couple gets together and how life can change over the years. I was thrilled to read Ray and Ally's story. I couldn't put it down.

Ray has decided to get in shape after a camping trip with his friends. He loves his wife very much but they have gotten stuck in their everyday lives. He has decided to make a change and it starts by getting his body back. This sends his wife into a spiral without him meaning it to. She thinks that he is having an affair which is not the case. They seem to have forgotten to communicate their feelings to each other. Will they learn how to do so before it's too late?

This is another very enjoyable entry in this fun series with a unique slant. I simply love the level of genuineness and "In Real Life" feel of these stories. We all read for the fantasy but sometimes I think it is very refreshing to read a story that I can truly relate to and that is this series at its heart. This book gives us Ray and Ally's story. I liked these two and I could certainly feel for them in regards to both their personal and marital issues. This book gave my emotions a workout and thought that was a very good read. All that being said, for me personally the chemistry was somewhat lackluster and I desperately wish that I could have felt a much stronger and deeper emotional connection between this pair. This is my volitional, candid review.

This was a fun read that contains moments that grab at your heart strings. The story tells of Ray (a dom) who has let himself go and finds he needs to get back in shape causing his wife to think he is going to leave and replace her. By not talking about the real issues, Ally becomes insecure and connecting with Ray is harder. The story tells of how they overcome the misconceptions and find the old spark they have been missing. This story contains some hilarious dialogue that is very entertaining. I loved the story and would highly recommend it.

I voluntarily reviewed an arc of this book.

This is the third book in the Dad Bod Doms series, it can be read as a standalone story.

Ray and Ally have been married for years and with three children their romance has slowly gotten lost over the years. Ray and his friends made a deal to make their marriages and Subs better and make more of an effort but with doing that Ally gets the wrong impression. My heart went out to both Ray and Ally, plenty of miscommunication and loads of discipline....

Entertaining story, with plenty of drama and sizzle. Really likable characters, I enjoyed the interaction between them.
