Hadley’s had to make herself a new life. One that doesn’t involve Edric, the love of her life, who was living it up in London now. Oh, she knows he is because she went there herself and checked the veracity of it. Until he isn’t. Because now, Edric’s shown up on her doorstep and he wants answers.
Hadley wished she had answers herself. Like why her sister Heather’s missing. Why Hedrina’s possessed by a demon. Why she and Helena can’t have regular lives, well, except for the magic part, because, let’s face it, the Moonfall sisters are witches. Seems Edric didn’t show up alone. He’s been followed by crows, risen dead, and a mysterious fog. Not to mention that it’s raining frogs and a dangerous vine seems to be overtaking the town.
What were we saying about regular lives? Nope, it doesn’t look like the Moonfall sisters will be having that.
Hadley, Helena, Hedrina and Heather are the Moonfall sisters. They are magical and pretty good looking. They are also a coven of witches.
Edric is Hadley’s boyfriend who was living in London for real. But now he has traveled back to Melancholy, Maine. And he’s brought with him a hex: a murder of crows, lightning strikes and zombies.
Somebody has planted a hex bag under a tree and it is bringing the zombies, poisonous plants and mucus mist. Yuck!
Hadley hasn’t a clue of who has done this, but she has her suspicions about who may be behind it. Is she correct in her assumption? We shall see.
Three sisters who are witches live in Melancholy Maine. The town knows what they are and come to them baked goods, teas and candles. When strange hints start to happen around town the residents turn to them for help. Also one of the sisters ran off her boy friend a couple of years earlier to “protect” him but he has returned to claim the girl he loves. Interesting characters and an interesting plot. I gave it three stars as the story was not fully resolved and led into another a volume. I’m happy to have returning problems for characters but cliff hangers are a pet peeve.
I liked the storyline of this book and the characters are interesting. The book felt a little bit rushed especially at the end. It would have been nice to have expanded more on the characters.
Hadley runs her family’s bakery; copes with the demon who periodically possesses her youngest sister; and tries not to miss Edric, the boyfriend she drove away from her dangerous life. But now her sister’s demon is gloating over a disaster it foresees, Edric is back demanding answers, and she’s burned her first cake ever. Is her witchy magic enough to keep her and her loved ones safe?
As one of several sisters, I could relate to Hadley’s complex relationship with her family. As the oldest, she feels responsible for her family’s safety. But as the looming danger to her sisters and to the entire town expands, Hadley’s guilt-inducing worry that she cannot protect them threatens to spiral out of control. The author avoids making Hadley a martyr, though, by also giving her a steamy romance with a supportive boyfriend.
Hadley grows as a person, and the plot arrives at a satisfying resolution. Still, enough questions remain unanswered to entice the reader to check out the second book in the series.
It's easy to read and it's short enough to be read on a quick trip, or during commute time. It has witches, spells, demons, family feelings, and a second-chance romance. It's fast-paced, with short chapters that keep the story flowing.
Things I didn't like:
I don't do well with stories that tell, tell tell, and don't show much. Also, the "I broke up with you for your own good and refused to tell you the reasons" only works for me if the characters are teenagers, not adults in their mid to late twenties. My other issue is with the magic system. It's kinda like "with a snap of my fingers I solve everything" and that's it. Maybe the author dives deeper into that aspect in the next books, but for now, it felt very "deus-ex-machina"
What bothered me:
The ending. Calling it abrupt is an understatement. I'm not unfamiliar with cliffhanger endings, but this wasn't a cliffhanger. It felt more like reading a book with the last chapter missing
Entertaining story about witchy sisters in an oddly named town. The townspeople all seem to be in on the fact they are witches and don't try to blame them when weird things happen in fact they seem to be more protective of them than you would expect. Hadley is the one who heads the "coven" and Hedrina is possessed by a demon who would like her dead so he can escape, sister Heather might be the source of their problems as she turned to the dark side of magic and Helena and Hadley are trying to lead normal lives now Hadley's one time boyfriend Edric is back on the scene and she is engaged to him. It's not as girly as it sounds, worth a read.
The Moonfall sisters are witches and the town of Melancholy embraces them. Hadley is the baker and keeps everyone happy with her special ingredients. She sent her love away to protect him but he's back in town to get closure. When mysterious events begin to plague the town the sisters try to solve the issues. This book is fun to read but leads you right into the next one .Have to read the series!
This novella was quite fun and had a good premise with interesting characters. Unfortunately the story itself only takes up 75% of the 163 pages. This means that there is hardly any time to really flesh out the characters, their backstories, or the relationships between not only the sisters, but the other characters in town. Give this book another 100 pages and I think it could have been a great 4 stars read.
I really like the idea and the storyline of this book. I enjoyed the characters all though the idea was incomplete. The author needed them to be clearer and and more complete to have me glued to the story. Thanks😃😃
Lots of witchy, Halloween vibes, which is what I look for at this time of year.
The plot was good and the characters were decent, but it was a fairly short book. As such, it felt thin in places. Still, it succeeded in embodying the spirit of Halloween.
Hadley broke up with Edric for his better future - but she didn't tell him why. She's a witch. When he comes to find out the real reason she broke up with him, strange magical events start happening.
Cute quick read. I wanted a Halloween read and this was free via Amazon so I tried it. I enjoyed it. A little bummed it ended on a cliff hanger but I think there were good characters with a Charmed vibe.
I enjoyed this story very much. I was looking for a light read that wasn't too beach and this hit the spot. Will definitely read more of this author and recommend to others
It was an enjoyable read. I just wish there was a pronunciation guide... especially for the main character names. The ending seemed to come far too soon. I get the story continues in the next one but it should still stand on its own.
Very short with a shallow story line. Not much character development. Magic system is basic and it appears these three witch sisters can do anything with a snap of their fingers. Not the book for me!
Three witches, mystery, magic, mayhem, and romance. A fun and slightly cheesy read which sets up the series nicely. It's let down a little by the abrupt ending.
Great premise. Promising characters and plot, bowever this was was just way too short. It needed more details. The ending was so abrupt. I was expecting another 30-50 pages at least.
