Enid Blyton remains one of Britain's favourite children's authors and her bumper short story collections are the perfect way to introduce her work to a new generation of readers.
Enid Mary Blyton (1897–1968) was an English author of children's books.
Born in South London, Blyton was the eldest of three children, and showed an early interest in music and reading. She was educated at St. Christopher's School, Beckenham, and - having decided not to pursue her music - at Ipswich High School, where she trained as a kindergarten teacher. She taught for five years before her 1924 marriage to editor Hugh Pollock, with whom she had two daughters. This marriage ended in divorce, and Blyton remarried in 1943, to surgeon Kenneth Fraser Darrell Waters. She died in 1968, one year after her second husband.
Blyton was a prolific author of children's books, who penned an estimated 800 books over about 40 years. Her stories were often either children's adventure and mystery stories, or fantasies involving magic. Notable series include: The Famous Five, The Secret Seven, The Five Find-Outers, Noddy, The Wishing Chair, Mallory Towers, and St. Clare's.
According to the Index Translationum, Blyton was the fifth most popular author in the world in 2007, coming after Lenin but ahead of Shakespeare.
This is a lovely collection of festive stories, would be an idle to read one or two a night during advent. My only problem with the collection is that some of the stories are of the time they were written so some of the wording or behaviour to the children doesn't translate very well to present day.
Although dated this book was full of innocence of children. Loved reading Blyton as a child and this was a lovely book to reminisce by and even better cause it was about Christmas.
Once upon a time, when I was a young child, I got all my mom's old books. I devoured them and especially liked the boarding school books by Enid Blyton. So, when I discovered that there were quite a few themed story collections available, I didn't hesitate and got myself the Christmas themed ones to read this season.
This collection of stories was everything I had hoped it would be. It captured the true Christmas spirit with stories filled with traditions, presents, trees and of course a little Christmas magic. Quite a few children in this book get the chance to meet the one and only Santa and there are walking snow mens present to save the day.
Of course, the stories are a little outdated. They capture Christmas as it used to be. They also capture society as it used to be. On top of that, all the stories consider some kind of moral. The kids are taught to be thankful, to be kind, to do good and to be humble. The kids not behaving perfectly have their toys or trees taken away.
However, I quite enjoyed reading these stories and I can't wait to start the next Christmas collection!
A heartwarming collection of stories about "Christmas Wishes" from Enid Blyton. The book is very much of its time so some elements will be alien to young readers (e.g. buying tobacco for Dad) but for us old fans it's lovely.
I enjoyed Enid Blyton as a child and I still like to revisit her tales as an adult. As always the tales are delightful and teaches children to always be kind to Mummy, and honesty is the best policy. I am glad I have this book to add to my Xmas audio stories.
