Dan Slott is an American comic book writer, the current writer on Marvel Comics' The Amazing Spider-Man, and is best known for his work on books such as Arkham Asylum: Living Hell, She-Hulk, Silver Surfer, The Superior Spider-Man, and Ren & Stimpy.
Zippy and amusing Spider-Man book, perfect for reading on a winter afternoon with a cup of coffee.
In the Rashomon-style opener (the action is presented from three different points of view), Spidey is pursuing carjacker Overdrive through the streets of the Big Apple while being alternately assisted / impeded by dedicated off-duty NYPD officer Vin Gonzales. (Gonzales is Peter Parker's roommate - he has no idea about Parker's secret identity.) Pleasantly heavy on both non-stop action and humor.
Which then leads to the main story involving a harsh and calculating new villainess who is inspired by classic Spidey bad guy Kraven. She kidnaps Gonzales (under the mistaken assumption that HE is Spider-Man) and steals the Spidey suit, leading Spidey to have to impersonate Daredevil during his rescue of Gonzales. The violence is a little more ferocious here, but it has moments of wit as well.
World: The art is aight, it's nothing special and I don't really feel the sense of motion that a Spidey book should have...meh. The world building here is fairly bad and a disrespect on a classic character. I know Kraven's a hokey character but Kraven's Last Hunt is one of the better and more iconic stories for Spidey and building upon that you would think would be interesting and honoring that character. That's not the case here. Here we get a poorly executed new hunter that's not defined well just poorly written. This is not how to build and honor the world of Spidey.
Story: Man this story is rough, it's pointless and reaches for the moon and falls flat on it's face. It's paced poorly, it's stupid and just boring. The biggest flaw is in the character because Kraven is so poorly written that the story ends up being nothing. It's forgettable and pointless and just bad. I don't see anything of note here that's a takeaway and Vin does not get any good solid building at all, or Spidey's situation plus it's inconsistent with what happened with his identity and Daredevil and all the past that they've had...it's a mess and bad.
Characters: Wow Kraven is a terrible character, stupid, illogical, and just as I said already stupid. For a new hunter being her first hunt she's pretty dumb, talks a big game in the first issue and is just stupid throughout, a terrible disservice to the namesake. Peter is meh and his situation is barely played upon and rather a retread. Vin is a boring character, he's pointless, he has no personality and I don't see the point of him, there is no chemistry there with Peter and I don't see his point.
It starts off with the story between Spidey and Overdrive and the face off with Vin and then comes Mr Negative and he has to deal with the room mate problem but the big story comes when Ana Kravinoff, the daughter of Kraven abducts Peters room-mate Vin and so its upto Peter to rescue him and save his life while also sporting a new costume and what will their relationship be like once its over? Will Vin survive? And whats the origin of Ana?
Its a great volume and does pretty well to answer most of it but not give the exact origin of Ana and I also like how capable Vin is and he will stand for anything thats right and this animosity being created between them is something, also I like Peter's commitment to saving others and the way he saves his secret identity was the best part. The art was okayish for the most part and its a pretty decent read.
I'm glad I picked up the first volume! It had a good story and humor. Definitely want to read more of the Kraven. Never knew about Peter's cop roomie Vin and hoping he doesn't stick around long bc he's pretty one note
I read this years ago as single issues when they came out and vaguely recalled them being not too bad. A few days ago I bought this on a whim (Ebay, dirt-cheap...) Well, what can I say? I really enjoyed this relatively short volume (it contains only four issues of the Amazing Spider-Man series; a stand-alone story and this collection's titular three-parter)! These stories take place in the Brand New Day era when the book came out three times a month and was written by a "braintrust" that reworked Peter Parker's status and supporting cast after the deal Peter made with Mephisto in One More Day. Maybe I enjoyed these stories more than I recalled because this time I did not read them as a result of OMD (which still sucks bad) but on their own merits. The first is a Rashomon-like telling of events through the eyes of three different participants and is pretty funny, showing how well the "braintrust" worked together; the following three-parter, written by Marc Guggenheim, introduces Kraven's daughter Ana (the "reveal" comes at the end of the story, but the girl refers to her father constantly. And this book IS called "Kraven's First Hunt", so go figure...) who mistakes Peter's roommate Vin (a character mostly forgotten these days) for Spider-Man and puts him in the costume she found at their flat, forcing Peter to borrow another costume and fight Ana Kraven as Daredevil, which makes for some interesting (and amusing) moments as well as keep his identity safe. The stories' subplots (and a short at the end of the volume) work to (re)establish characters (Harry Osborn, Mr Negative, et al.) and events so the character does not move in a vacuum but has room to move forward. (And let me say here: Peter Parker sucks at selecting roommates!) The art is by Phil Jimenez whose work I really like, so no complaints there. All in all I found this collection rather entertaining.
Fearful Symmetry: Kraven's Last Hunt is probably my favorite comic storyline. Ever. Everything about it is perfection. This feels like a cheap ploy to cash in that. Everything the original did right, this does wrong. The original made us feel sympathy for Kraven; this makes us feel nothing for Ana. The original used alternating points of view - Kraven's, Spidey's, Vermin's, MJ's - to enrich the story; this one just uses them for no apparent purpose. The original was built on years of history; this one is trying to set up something that feels lost in its purpose. The original made me feel something for each character; this one makes me feel apathetic toward all of them.
I think part of the problem is the name. Using a name that refers to the original forces me to make these comparisons. Had they let the story have a life of its own, they could have built up to something. I also do not see the point of including the Overdrive story (unless it's simply to reinforce Vin's dislike of Spider-Man) and the Harry story.
Read a bit of it in my local library before going to see the latest (at that time) Spiderman movie (Far from home) and then returned a few more times to finish it. Featuring an undeveloped but quite interesting female iteration of a classic comic book Spiderman villain, this is quite entertaining yet straight forward story with not too much depth. Her plan was overly flawed though, which although helped move the plot along it did underplay the effectiveness of her character as a worthy villain, especially for a first appearance. The character of Spiderman was well written though, and some of the jokes delivered by this once again witty banter spewing spider hero made me laugh. Not much more to say, rather then the extra story at the beggining included one of the more obscure and ridiculous modern Spiderman villans (a villan that when he touches any vehicle he can change it's shape to make it a more dangerous vehicle-doc ock he is not.)
Good book. Great art work throughout and a nice cover! The first issue had great pencils of Spider-Man (similar to Todd McFarlane) however the colours were very bland. The story was pretty good featuring well known characters like Mister Negative, Vermin and Daredevil, and a new female “Kraven”. But the hunt doesn’t go very well for her or Spidey’s friends. It is fairly well written with some decent humour, but sometimes a little cheesy (but to be fair Spider-Man usually is). The end to the main story has a nice cliffhanger that makes you wonder where the new characters and story will go next. Overall, pretty decent Spidey book! Would recommend.
Kraven's daughter Ana took his name and decided to get revenge from Spider-Man, but she got the wrong target and Spidey borrowed Daredevil's costume to save the day, but it wasn't all easy when Vermin showed up.
Pretty interesting set up but Ana was 12, she took on 2 grown man without any super power. That's got to be a bit preposterous. And Spidey only had 1 costume? It's a bit weak logic wise but nonetheless entertaining.
Yet another child of Kraven, introduced to exact revenge on Spider-Man for the events of a better story from decades ago. At least her design is leagues better than the Grim Hunter from the 90s, and at least the story being told here is more interesting (and far better paced) than last year's abysmal Hunted arc.
Not a bad Spider-Man story! Has a lot of the elements that you know and love, plus the art style was pretty great as well. I always love when Spider-Man gets to interact with Daredevil. And this situation was entertaining! Borrowing his suit. Always hilarious. Especially when Peter had all those little bandaids on his face at the end. It's always the little details that get me.
I recently re-read Kraven's First Hunt, so this was nice to read after refreshing my memory of the other epic. This is a fast-paced, interesting read. I like the idea, and I like Peter's solution to his costume crisis, as well as his explanation to Vin afterwards. It was also great to see Vermin, as he was such an important part of KLH. Ready to read the next volume and see what happens...
This new Kraven character was rather underwhelming and the story crafted around her debut was only marginally interesting. I appreciated the complexity of Peter's policeman roommate but beyond that the story felt a little off tone-wise for one reason or another.
I'm sure most would say that five stars are one or two too many, but I've been binge reading Brand New Day and this was a tone changer the run needed--and it's a damn good story with incredible art from Phil Jimenez.
The first chapter - seemingly a filler story, but it’s all Rashomon! Four separate perspectives of the same events!
The story arc with the hunter has DareDevil and Vermin, two entertaining characters in the Marvel Universe. Finally, the big reveal: the hunter is the late Kraven’s daughter!
All of the ingredients are here: The Parker luck, web-shooters malfunctioning, a real supporting cast, personal life in shambles, money problems. Everything that fans both old and new could possibly want out of the title is here, making these the best stories since DeFalco’s ‘80s run.
Brand New Day dönemi aynen devam ediyor. Straczynski'nin olgun Peter Parker'ını 15 yaşına geri döndürmelerinden hoşlanmıyorum ama arada güzel anlar yakalıyorlar hikaye içinde.
Overall mediocre, this volume introduces the arrogant and boring Ana Kravinoff and gives more screen time to the uninteresting Vin Gonzales. And it's not even very funny...
This trade collects Amazing Spider-Man issues # 564-567 and material from Spider-Man: Brand New Day - Extra!!!.
The first issue is a quick stand alone story told three times - by Spider-Man, Peter Parker's cop roommate Vin, and the villain Overdrive. Each has his own take on the day's events. Decent enough.
The next three form the titular "Kraven's First Hunt." A young woman has taken the name of one of Spider-Man's most deadly foes, and is as determined to make the wall crawler a personal trophy as her departed namesake was. The hunt will force Spider-Man to revisit the traumatic events of Kraven's Last Hunt and the new Kraven isn't above involving bystanders such as Vin and Daredevil.
The original Kraven was a favorite of mine and I recently read some of the Gauntlet trades and The Grim Hunt and wanted to go back to read the introduction of his "successor." It felt a little rushed and probably should've been given more issues, but was a solid adventure with some very nice plot hooks and appropriate nods to the original Kraven and his most famous story.
We finish with a light eight page glimpse of how being Spider-Man effects Peter's friendships. A nice character piece but largely forgettable.
I liked the art here quite a bit throughout the trade. The styles aren't perfect and the faces look a bit off on occasion in the Kraven tale, but
Overall a perfectly acceptable bunch of stories that feel like they could have been more than they are, but provide enjoyable reading none the less.
