This is the 3rd series and 4th book I have read from this author. I have come to the conclusion that he has awesome ideas but his execution is just mediocre. He has all the elements in each book that could make it really good, but doesn't seem to know what to focus on. Worldbuilding, characters, powers, relationships, action, banter. He has each of these in his books but nothing ever stands out.

In this book the author attempted to add the the litrpg genre which isn't something he has written about in the past as far as I know. Just like his other books, he seems like he knows a little bit about the topic but not enough to be interesting. In this book, each person has an aspect (power) that they receive when they are 2 years old. The MC is one of the rare few who are aspectless until he stops a robbery when he is around 20 years old and he finally gets his aspect. His power is like the rpg games. He has stats, levels, inventory and quests. This was a really good idea but poorly executed. The MC went around gaining levels and stats but there was no way to follow his progression. He started with 5 strength and ended up with 110 strength at the end but there was no indication about how much weight he could lift or powerful he had become. The stats were very vague and not very specific. He had a relationship with 3 women in the story and that was just okay. I would have preferred a scenario in which there was a reason he was dating 3 women at the same time when nobody else was doing anything like that. Everything in this book was just okay. I keep hoping for one book/story from this author that would stand out and be great. His idea's are awesome and I love the cover art on most of his books. I just need a little more.

Trash.

Soft core porn for Tweenagers written by a virgin with archaic views of women.

Seriously. Trash. Do not waste your time.

Good Work; Needs Minor Buffing

Archer is a very prolific writer, and he excels at putting interesting characters in different (harem) settings. In this case, he’s trying out a supes harem story, and it mostly works. There’s a an overall slight discordance to it though, which keeps it from being perfect.

Firstly, the MC voice and POV is so young (16-17) that you expect him to be in HS, but he’s not. That doesn’t really come into play until the first bow-chikka bow-wow scene, where it really stands out (heh). I’m not saying that someone (who sounds like they are) sixteen can’t be some harem sex meister [keep that dream alive, boys] but reading it is startling. That happens a few times until you kind of get used to it.

Secondly, there are story elements that get overlooked. The “store” is [probably erroneously] mentioned very early but is never investigated. When it reappears, it is briefly checked, but used only once. I don’t know about other gamers, but I’d be checking that sucker out for changes daily, and every time I leveled. The Inventory feature was also vastly under utilized. Got a super secret thumb drive to deliver? Where ya gonna park that baby where no one - and I mean no one - else can get to it? Where you can’t fall or break it? Uh-huh. Where didn’t it go? Right. What else can you put in there? What happens when you do? Yep: we don’t know, and neither does the MC, because he does it only once. Again, I would be stuffing it with all sorts of crap to see how it worked. What stacks? Anything? Does it stay preserved? Hmm?

Another item that got missed was the quest for the lost pet failing. He wonders about the penalty for failing a quest late in the book, but I’m pretty sure he did when he fell into the underground rather than retrieve the missing pet. I could be wrong about him Accepting it, but hey. I also want to know what happened to that cat caught in the sewer? Did it get out? Did it die under the rubble, or did a child grab it on the way out? What about the kittens? WON’T SOMEONE PLEASE THINK ABOUT THE KITTENS? Don’t let Sasha know you did that, bro. Just saying.

So yeah, overall it’s pretty good, but it feels like it should be a coming-of-age teen kinda-manga supes story (ala “Kid Sensation”) - except for the very detailed harem moments. (Which would cause World Carnage in the KS books. World. Carnage.) It also has a number of places containing inappropriate bought of laughter. Spooky. Don’t make eye contact.

For the record I liked it, and I’ll be looking for book two. I’ll also be hoping it’s a bit more clear and focused on what it is, and that it exposes (heh) more about the aspect and how it works. I also wouldn’t mind knowing who’s managing it, and why. (What, you didn’t think there was Something behind the curtain there? Bwa ha ha ha!)

Look i could care less about harem elements. I enjoyed other superhero litrpg books with harem elements like Super Sale on Super Heroes, but this? This was trash, man. I actually tried reading this book months ago and DNF’d it, and proceeded to forget all about it.

Found it again and, because of the old “don’t judge a book by its cover” adage, i gave it another try. Starts out great, what a cool concept. Absolutely ruined by the “flirting” or whatever you wanna call that horse crap. Utterly unbelievable nonsense and rushed relationships. Every girl he hits on is automatically attached at the hip (literally) and everyone acts like its perfectly normal.

Trust me, don’t bother. DNF’d again at 50% and i will not revisit this again.

A very enjoyable book.

The story was fun and I enjoyed the interaction between the MC and the secondary characters. The pacing was good and I liked the twists the author worked in.

I was avoiding this book like the plague, but someone I know recommended it to me. I hope it works out, because I will be ignoring anything he says from now one it it doesn't.

The person who recommended this said it was like the anime "My Hero Academia" in litrpg form, and he is 100% right. The same craziness of that series with people having organic and inorganic mutations grafted onto their bodies is here, and the same being ostracized for not participating in the crazy mutations is also there.

Just like the anime there is a hero school, etc, etc. I can't take this seriously, same as the anime.
The My Hero Academia knockoff isn't the problem.

The problem is

The author watched too much anime. The book was going good until the end. I was thinking of picking up the sequels, but now I don't know. There is nothing I hate and detest more than that "friendship is magic" anime trope. The fact that the author took something that was made to help foster relationships with kids, and used it in an adult book (it has a harem) as a serious plot point... I don't have words.

I was thinking of trying the author's other books, but I saw some negative reviews about him dropping the ball (it's why I avoided him), and it seems that is true. The person who recommended this to me is a huge My Hero Academia fanboy, so I could see him overlooking things he normally pick up on.

I really don't know if I will pick up book two. We will see.

I would say this is more a 3.5 for me. The conflicts in the book were too smooth. It is still an enjoyable read and puts me in mind of My Hero Academia. A world where almost everyone is born with a power or Aspect.

The MC is aspectless until they have a run-in with a villain that kicks things off. Then it is a matter of mastering their aspect and leveling up.

You know the Devil's Bargain that all LitRPG readers face at some point? Do I read a harem gamelit story to scratch that litrpg itch if I can't find a pure genre litrpg to read? Well, I took that bargain so you don't have to: Don't Do It!

Character 5/10 Plot 5/10 GameMechanics/Harem lol 5/10 Writing 5/10 Enjoyment 5/10

I would describe this as the main character premise of Solo Leveling set in the world of My Hero Academia. For anyone interested in the gamelit aspect, it is a third tier priority behind the superhero element, which is then an extremely distant second tier priority to the sex scenes—which are set up by the barest of motivations.

I'm not going to overly punish a book for being something different than what I hoped it would be because I can recognize that I was hoping against hope here. But, I have ,um, accidentally read a few harem stories in my day, so I can still say that this was middle of the pack. Granted, I am also not really part of this genre's readership, so for true fans out there this might hit differently.

Had potential

The level up progression is fun, if a bit generic and severely overpowered. But this is a power fantasy, so that's the name of the game.

The real downfall of this story is the romantic aspect. In a word, it's garbage. That is a real problem because the romantic aspect easily accounts for 1/3 of the story.

The author chose to make this a harem novel, and the gist of it is every girl he's interested in immediately falls in love with him and wants to have sex right away (in one case within hours of meeting him), and also loves the other girls he's in love with and are instantly super best friends and totally wondering when he's going to bring up the idea of them sharing.

This is not a strange aspect of his power (which if it were should probably be considered rape), it's just bad writing. Where there should be a love triangle with tension and stakes, instead it's just a bunch of horny people who want to bang anywhere the conceivably can. Gag.

The result is a paradox of three characters that take up 1/3 of the actual writing while remaining undeveloped one-dimensional cardboard cut-outs.

These bad relationships exist to a lesser extent with non-romantic partners as well, but it's less pronounced as they don't have near as much focus as the romantic partners. A perfect example of a character who is effectively a chief of police for supper powers, who was going to railroad the MC into being labeled a super villain and sent to prison until he was stopped by the world's most popular superhero. Then a few days later invites himself to the MC's private workout session and suddenly they are all good friends. Like, what the hell? This guy is incompetent at best, incredibly corrupt at worst, and suddenly we're all buddy buddy? And from there on out he's supposedly good at his job? What?

The last issue with the book is that it is effectively three distinct arcs that happen one after another. The final climax is not something that has built over the course whole story, it's just spring on you at the end. It's like the author wrote the first part of the story, got done and said "oh crap! This is way too short! I know, I'll add this, that will be good!". Then once he finished that he said "oh no! It's still too short! I know! This will be the big climactic ending! Yeah, that's great!"

It's not a good structure.

For a 20 something the MC and his best friend both act like 12 year olds.

The dialog is cheesy and dumb.

The stats make no sense and kinda just work.

The whole story seems to be an stolen from different stories like Solo Leveling and My Hero with minor difference. And the random pseudo-pop culture Easter eggs got weird because canonically this is in the future.

The story building is bad and he coincidences are laughable. This random kid is somehow connected to the 1st and 3rd best hero’s (how is that even decided). He also always runs into the love interests randomly. Somehow the HEAD of a government agency that like the FBI, is the same age as the Mc early 20s and for some reason wants to be this random guys friend.

The main character has the attention span of a fly. And not fleshed out at all. He is a fan boy that’s about all we know.

For someone who didn’t have powers you’d think he would think he would spend plenty of time going over every little detail of his powers but no he forgets about the shop for so long I think the author forgot and had to re introduce it.

The MC is also super dumb and a spoiled brat. He judges everyone for everything as soon as he gets his powers.

Also he has a hero complex that definitely isn’t earned and because the author wrote it makes everyone around the MC agree.

Also the sex is just bad. Also his power definitely messes with people heads. The fact that he can increase charisma and it somehow makes extremely cringy pickup lines work on everyone is a terrifying idea, especially in the hands of a man child that will f*** anything that walks and talks.

I didn't like this story very much.

Not much thought or effort seems to have gone into the world building.

The Gamer gimmick is integrated very half-heartedly into the story. It doesn't drive the story or add much to it.

The characters were not all that intriguing, but not the worst part of the story either.

The relationships didn't come across as very realistic, but as this was a harem type story, that was pretty much expected.

If the sex-scenes had been better, they might have carried the book by themselves. After all porn doesn't need much plot, but as it was, that was not the case.

Overall, it feels like the author took some interesting parts from other better and more successful works and slapped them together without taking great efforts to create a new working whole.

Fun at times, but the author has some problems that really wrench me out of suspension of disbelief:

1. He clearly has no conception of how long things take. Several times he describes standoffs as lasting "minutes" when even 10 seconds would be awkwardly long, and breaks in conversation as well.
2. The way people relate to each other and especially the main character bears on resemblance to real life. People are constantly throwing themselves at him and not just as love interests but even as for platonic relationships.
3. Other stuff that I've forgotten since reading.

I did enjoy this book, but I probably won't try the sequel since I know that another book of the same will annoy me even more.

Finally

I will be honest I’ve been disappointed with what this author has put out recently but I’m happy to say this feels like it’s finally back in the game. Although it could certainly be seen as a more mellowed down spin off of The Boys, it’s got some metal to it. Characters, though a bit on the 2D side, are well rounded and engaging. Plot is well thought out and world building is well done.
Also, I have to give a round of applause to all the little nerd references, such as the YMCA song and a tip of the hat to Mr. Kong’s “The Land” books (yeah, I see what ya did there Mr. Archer ;) )
All in all, it was a fun read and I’d be willing to pick up the next one.

A good story with good twisted plots

This book is a good read. It has a good a good story line that is easy to follow. Ibwould have like the father not be the villain. I would have had a twin brother to the father who Lost his memory and instead want to kill his relatives unknown that it was his family. Especially when he met his twin brother and how everyone including the hero thought it was the father causing crime wave. Both brothers realize they were having shared memories of each other. The hero having sex with 3 different lovers was hot. I look to reading this author's next book. A good read.

Yay for level up

What can I say. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The harem elements were straight up and didn't interfere with the story. It may actually help in the future but we will see. I enjoyed the aspect system of the world and the unique level up power should be fun. Wonder if it runs off on others some. The book is basically about the coming into power of a non aspect wanna be hero and his journey to becoming a hero. Good fun and fun characters. Good light fun harem \litrpg read but light on the litrpg.

A bit too raunchy for me.

I don't mind some descriptive violence where the drama of the story calls for it, or some well placed inuendo or live interest sub plot, but for me this story spent far too many pages on the exaggerated sexual exploits of the main character. The increased descriptive nature of the sexual relationship he had with the cast of sub characters did nothing to enhance the plot.

Awesome Hero story

This is one fe the best Gamelit books I've ever read. The story of Sam accidentally killing ice erator. Only to discover it unlocked his Aspect. Is quite realistic. While the nature of his Aspect is fun and very interesting to read about. As is Sam's life especially his building of his harem. In short this book was just plain fantastic! Awesome job Simon Archer!

From almost Zero to definite Hero

I enjoyed the quirky leveling system most games are familiar with, in some form or other. A modest amount of harem-lit was the right balance, and a diverse group of personalities made this a fun, light read. I couldn't put it down and binge read it rather than sleep.

I can see openings for a series, and look forward to seeing how our Hero progresses.

Cool concept, poor execution.

Story felt disjointed and discombobulated. MC within a week of becoming a hero fights the 3rd rank hero to a standstill, how? What are they ranking heroes by? Popularity? Characters had no depth, and interactions felt contrived. Frequent plot twists which added nothing to the story except a disjointed story and word count. I'm left wondering why I read as much as I did.

A fun take on gaming

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The gaming super hero premise was a fresh take. Action packed I liked that the characters weren’t all 16 years old trying to save the world. The hero has a great charisma stat so attracts 3 girls, fairly standard for this genre. I’d like to see an author mix it up and have at least one guy fall for him too. Logically (can we use logic? ) the stat would affect both men and women. I look forward to to more adventures.

Loved the One Punch Man easter egg.

When I was reading the reviews for this one person had said this book was a "My Hero Academia" rip off, and you know what...I'm so glad it was true because that review was the reason I bought the book.

I enjoyed the story immediately. Most of the characters are well done and vibrant. The writer did a good job of making you care about even the side characters.

This book was very enjoyable and I can't wait to read the next one.

Started okay

Then it went to poo.

The MC has a neat ‘Aspect’ which lets him level. Cool stuff. He has to work hard to keep up. Great.

Then he starts having sex with every woman he lusts after, and scenes become little more than histrionic displays like the worst of anime. Random things happen and the plot ping pongs from scene to scene with little to no direction.

It may be fun to listen to as an audiobook, but it is terrible to read.

Less than what I was expecting.

I think I’m so disappointed because this is just a pornographic version of many other stories that I liked. The writing is too simplistic and the characters are too much like cardboard cut outs. All the characters except for the main character, all feel like low intelligent NPC‘s from bad video games. The only reason I’m giving it 2 stars is because I really like the concept behind the story if not the execution.

A fun read, the plot and the character was different with the LitRPG upgrade system in a superhero novel. It's not a fan of the upgrade paths, level quest, reading the points made over and over again. However, the book did not focus so much on it and it didn't bore me unlike most LitRPG.

The harem elements were not necessary at all and would not have changed the story or ending if it was not included.

A Superhero Erotica LitRPG Novel

While the erotic scenes are short, they fit with the pace of the novel's plot. There is much more to the novel than the erotic aspect as this is the origin story of no less than five rising superheroes.

This novel may appeal to adult fans of the wider fantasy genre, adult fans of comic books, fans of erotica (even though the erotic scenes are a minor aspect of the novel), and possibly to fans of playing RPGs.

So, what’s your super power?

It seems to come up fairly often. What superpower would you want? Well I have definitely changed my choice after reading this book Level Up: Press Start by Simon Archer. Simon doesn’t call them superpowers, they are called aspects. I didn’t realize that this Book had a harem aspect to it which isn’t really my thing. I still enjoyed the heck out of this story. And I want to level up!

tons of fun

I really loved this book. The only downside Was that I found suspiciously too many things in common with the book Solo Leveling. This left a little bit of a bad taste in my mouth.

That being said it had its own unique moments. I enjoyed when he used his enhanced intelligence to repair and build his robot. I felt the nuances of his other abilities weren’t fleshed out well enough, but I suppose that is what the hero academy is for in book 2!

A fun read

I enjoyed the ride as a Young Man starts to become a hero. Not much angst and some oddball hapenstance occurrences kept it light and fun. The gamer in me got annoyed at how the MC did not exploit the features and items gained from their aspect. A part of me wanted more of the LitRPG. I still had a great time.

Has potential but fall short. Too much just kinda fall in place for the MC. Even when he accidentally does something its right. The pace of the book is also really fast not meaning that it has a ton of action but that the flow of the book is off. Don't think ill read anymore from the author for awhile.
