When Saint John “Sinjun” Livingston drove out of California in his vintage Caddy, he left behind the years of shame and fear instilled by his stalker ex. Sinjun’s new life as owner of the Rainbow Spa and Lodge in small town New Mexico is the perfect bandage for all his hurts. Finding this surreal place of peace is more than Sinjun dared to hope for, but what he doesn’t expect from Truth or Consequences is meeting a beautiful Texas cowboy on the side of the road… and wanting to get to know him.
From the first chance encounter, Rhys Davis knows he wants to see the free-spirited man with the weird name again. When Rhys offers to help renovate the lodge and spa to take the place from the 1970s to the modern age, he’s well aware he is falling for Sinjun. But the spa’s healing waters are needed more than ever when Rhys’s family interferes and Sinjun’s dangerous past comes back to haunt him.
Now Sinjun and Rhys must trust each other and the place that brought them together if they’re going to survive to build a future.
Texan to the bone and an unrepentant Daddy's Girl, BA Tortuga spends her days with her hounds and her beloved wife, texting her grandbabies, and eating Mexican food. When she's not doing that, she's writing. She spends her days off watching rodeo, knitting, and surfing Pinterest in the name of research. Following their own personal joys, BA and Julia heard the call of the high desert and they now live in the New Mexico mountains. BA's personal saviors include her wife, her best friends, and coffee. Lots of coffee. Really good coffee.
Having written everything from fist-fighting rednecks to cowboy daddies to werewolves, BA does her damnedest to tell the stories of her heart, which is committed to giving everyone their happily ever after. With books ranging from hard-hitting BDSM, to fiery passions, to the most traditional of love stories, BA refuses to be pigeon-holed by anyone but the voices in her head.
The cowboy and the sweet soulful man make a steamy pair ! Truth or Consequences, New Mexico is a blissful place in the southwestern USA, with beauty, peace and magical believers. Sinjun, a pretty, long haired man, who has escaped his brutal, abusive ex and landed where he could build a safe, happy life, owning a healing springs Spa. He loved getting it ready, working hard and meeting new friends in his new community. He met a gorgeous cowboy, strong and solid, Rhys, who owned a ranch, and later found he could help with some of the remodeling it needed.
Meanwhile, their attraction was spectacular, but they went ahead slowly, dating and getting to know each other. Their stories are told in time and Sinjun has been through so much pain. As their feelings grow, Sinjun’s ex is stalking and threatening, while Rhys has his family issues, too. There are many events at once, and the Spa is a healing place for Sinjun. He talks to the Adobe structure as he works, feeling the peacefulness, and magic, soul deep. Later, we find out why it’s so important.
The ex escalates and we have violence, and injuries, plus an unusual set of heroes, we did not expect. I would have liked a few clues about the spiritual magic-ness earlier, but the ending had a worthy justice, which was startling, but made me happy.
These men are perfect together, hot and sexy, caring and loving. The epilogue says it best ! Enjoy !
Hidden deep inside the nearly 220 pages of B.A. Tortuga’s incredibly disappointing novel, Truth or Consequences, is about 15 pages of an almost decent story. Almost because even those few pages are spoiled by the inclusion of some mystical almost religious sect-like interventions that make little sense at all.
And, egads, a major pet peeve of mine - rugged gay cowboys calling other men ‘honey’ and ‘darling’ from the day that they meet! NO. Just no way.
If all the discussions of meal preparation, shopping, and gratuitous sex were deleted, Truth or Consequences would be at best a close to OK novella.
All of this is truly unfortunately because the author has created some really likable characters who are truly good people and who definitely deserve much better treatment than they receive in this book.
There are a few hints in the book of a supernatural aspect to the story, but it’s a light touch for the most part, something that could be Sinjun’s own happy thoughts or spiritual energies. But then the end of the book happens and I don’t feel like enough groundwork was laid to support the sudden mystical element. One moment we’re in a story about Sinjun, Rhys, and Sinjun’s crazy ex … and the next we have a haunted hotel. Personally, I didn’t care for the resolution. While other parts of the book worked for me, including the romance and the friendship between Sinjun and Rhys, the rest of it, from the hotel to Hal, really didn’t.
I loved this book and got very engrossed in Rhys’ and Sinjun’s story to the point where I had to stop reading about forty pages to the end, and save it till the next night because I knew if I kept going I’d have to sit up late to finish it.
I loved Sinjun and the way he cares about everyone and everything and does what he can to help. He and Rhys are wonderful together, and I enjoyed reading about them getting to know each other, and slowly trusting each other enough to talk about their pasts. I also loved Rhys and how he’s so protective of Sinjun but in a caring, I want to be there for you kind of way, rather than the I need to possess you of Hal.
Although this is a romance, there’s also a sense of suspense lurking throughout. Sinjun’s nasty ex’s presence is right through it until the final showdown, which I loved. I kept waiting for him to turn up to try to claim Sinjun back, and when he did I was on the edge of my seat. The author writes an action scene very well and knows how to rack up the tension. Hal is creepy and nasty, and I thought the line of him being a monster summed him up very well.
I loved how Sinjun becomes part of the community and how they all rally round to help. Angie rocks, and I liked Sinjun’s dad, Arlo. All of the supporting cast fleshed out the story and gave it a wonderful found family, small town vibe. As a side note, coolest name for a town ever. The setting also felt very real and was easy to imagine, and was a character in its own right. Quite literally as it turns out. The magical realism part of this story was fabulously written and believable. Wow.
This is very much a story about family, and I liked the thread with Rhys’ family too, and how all that worked out in the end. The ending is a lovely HEA.
I’ve only recently discovered this author, and I’ve loved everything I’ve read so far.
3.5. I always forget how much B.A. Tortuga uses food in her books. And saying "honey" and the dialogue style is very distinct. It was okay - I guess I wish this story had been told by a different author. I really liked the rainbow springs spa setting and the somewhat mystical land connection - but this author always stays a bit mid-level. It's not a surface read but it never goes tooo dark or tooo deep. Although given the villian is pretty dark that seems maybe like I'm not correctly stating it. I mean the magical realism component in this one where he literally turns into some form of imagined beast begins to get a little interesting. But a quick resolve and a sort of - don't look too deeply into it feels like it misses out on some depth that could've been explored throughout the book instead of just hinted. Maybe it's the way it's written and the ease of recovery that I never fully gel with.

This is a beautiful love story coming out of mostly off-page prior abuse and pain. Sinjun made the decision to escape his abusive ex-husband and to create a new life in New Mexico, as the owner of a small mineral springs spa and hotel. The new place gave him positive vibes and the town seemed like a good place to heal. While asking for directions, he met Rhys, a local rancher who was estranged from his Texas family due to being gay. The two hit it off immediately and found an instant connection. Sinjun's ex-husband continued to stalk and threaten him. Can these two find safety, healing, and love?
I really liked this story because it had a tender, mystical side. The land connected to the Ancients and there were a few touch points of spirituality that enhanced the book. The love between the men is deep, blessed, and life-long. This is a really enjoyable read.
This one just didn’t bang it out of the park for me. The other books I’ve read from this author make me not want to leave, this book just had holes in it. I’m confused by the end really. Was this suppose to be a paranormal book? I didn’t get that vibe in the beginning, how did we jump to I love you so fast. One Mc’s family drama didn’t really seemed resolved. I’m not exactly thrilled with how mr cowboy reacted to few things either. Just ehh with me
The looming stalker threat and welcoming small-town environment made for an intriguing, unique romance
The prologue almost wrecked me with anxiety and worry--please be cautious when reading this vivid depiction of someone escaping a domestic abuse situation. The abuse and stalker themes are recurring throughout the story, so I would recommend skipping this book if that is a trigger for you. That being said, while this wasn't my favorite book, I did find this small-town cowboy romance enjoyable. Sinjun and Rhys are very sweet together, and it was adorable how quickly their connection grew. This is a great example of a story with instant attraction that doesn't cross too far into insta-love.
The people of T or C really elevated this story for me. Their welcoming nature, acceptance, and willingness to help out whenever necessary was so wonderful and made me fall in love with the town. Even though all the interactions Rhys and Sinjun had with the other townspeople were just everyday conversations, I felt such a strong sense of community running through them. It was exciting to read about Sinjun's lodge restoration or Rhys's ranch because I never knew who would stop by with an interesting story or offer to help out.
Where this story took a huge left turn for me was with the otherworldly aspects. Maybe there were more hints along the way that I missed, but the epic showdown at the end was so unexpected that I didn't know how to feel about it. The imagery of a legion of spirits fighting off the moster was very moving, but somewhat lost on me because of how surprised I was. I wish that the spirits had been more present throughout the entire book, because then I think it would have made more sense to me why they showed up in such a big way at the end.
Overall, this story is a decent mix of romance, small-town dynamics, and suspense. I wouldn't call it a particularly lighthearted read, even though the romance is certainly angst and drama free, because of the stalker threat looming in the background. I don't think I'd read another story set in this town, but I was happy to see Sinjun and Rhys's happily ever after.
**I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
When Sinjun tied the knot, he was young, scared and alone. Where he was expecting fireworks and romance, he got absolutely hell on earth with a possessive, controlling psychotic monster instead of an attentive lover. In a bid to escape from his abusive, stalker ex, Hal, he packs his bags and moves to Southern New Mexico. Here as the owner of the Rainbow Spa and Lodge he is able to start afresh and give himself another shot at happiness.
When Rhys Davis meets Sinjun for the first time, he is instantly enamored with the beautiful surfer come to life, his soulful bright blue eyes and his carefree smile. He can't help but be drawn to the free spirited man with lean muscles and gorgeous tanned skin. Fixing Sinjun’s lodge gives him a chance to get closer to the intriguing man and get to know him better.
Will Sinjun get another chance at happiness with Rhys or will his past come back to destroy the little happiness he has found?
This was so beautifully written! What Sinjun had to go through with his ex was heartbreaking, but that only made him fight for a better life and made him stronger. Rhys was so sweet, caring and understanding, he was a breath of fresh air that Sinjun needed in his life. The scenes where Hal physically and verbally abuses Sinjun were so heartwrenching and made me a bit emotional.
This was such a beautiful journey of a man claiming his life back despite the emotional wreckage that he has gone through and coming out braver and stronger than before! I always like my MC'S to be put through the wringer before getting their HEA, and this one definitely didn't disappoint!
This book was fantabulous! The tone and flow of the story made this energy that was sheer perfection. I've read better stories, but RARELY have I ever read anything as well crafted as this. There was just so much depth and something else I can't really describe that made this feel so unbelievably real.
Rhys and Sinjun were so layered and deep, each completely unique from the other. They felt like real people. Fully and completely real people and behaved like real people.
DIdnt really get Sinjun's name though. Spelled saint john? What? Is that a thing I've never heard of? It confused me pretty much the entire time though and was sort of off putting.
I also really didn't like the small little snippet when rhys first found out about Hal. There was a brief conversation about bdsm that didn't sit well with me. It was like the author was trying to prove they knew enough about the lifestyle to make comments about it by pointing out how wrong that one book was. But at the same time I feel like the arguments made were more from memorization and not true understanding. Add to that the fact that there was no backstory on the bdsm angle. Was that how he and sinjun got started? And why? BEcause the whole thing seemed like a cop out and naturally a twisted, sadistic, psychopath would be in the bdsm community... Just.... Seriously that whole thing never should have been in there. It added nothing to the story or character development and was never mentioned again. It really just felt like the author wanted to jump on a soapbox for a minute and simultaneously defend and condemn bdsm as a whole.
Other than those 2 glaring issues I just adored this book. The romance between these 2 MCs flowed so naturally it was like magic. They had issues and personality clashes and talked it out, moving forward together. I practically screamed when they said the I love yous out loud the first time. Amazingly satisfying!
All you have to do is read the Prologue of this book and you are hooked. BA Tortuga is a new author for me and I was very pleasantly surprised. The writing is great, the characters are well developed and the storyline is engrossing … you can’t help but love Sinjun and Rhys as well as the town of T or C, and you will feel a connection with them on an emotional level. The authenticity and descriptiveness of the writing is impressive. I could picture in bold colors the scenes being painted by the words on the page, and the accents, cadence and mannerisms of the locals is so real and accurate. But beyond all of this, the crowning achievement for the author here is the portrayal of Sinjun. This is a guy who has suffered emotional trauma at the hands of a violent abuser, yet when we first see him in T or C, he is so happy and upbeat and optimistic. His indomitable spirit shining through despite how easy it would be for him to be a scared, bitter shell of a person. He fought for himself before and we see him fight for himself again. And the best part is that he is still willing to recognize that he can still love and others can love him and there’s no shame in asking for and accepting help from those who care about you. This book was a surprise for me. It’s unique, with a different feel to it than your typical M/M romance. I highly recommend you give this a read. I think you’ll enjoy it as much as I did.
* I received an advanced reader copy of this book and voluntarily agreed to provide my review, which reflects my independent opinion.
I absolutely loved this book and I was fully engaged from the first page to the last. Truth or Consequences is beautifully written, sweet, gritty, emotional, fun, uplifting, deals well with some very serious and difficult issues, the characters are amazing and the setting is gorgeous. Sinjun is an absolute sweetheart who has spent the last ten years with a monster who horribly abused him. Now that he is free he has started a new life in New Mexico. Rhys also has a painful past but he loves his ranch and the local town. He is determined to help Sinjun fix up the Rainbow Spa & Lodge as well as learn as much about him as he can. Even though they are complete opposites they are exactly what the other needs and I love how their relationship evolves. Unfortunately Sinjun's ex refuses to let go of him and is doing everything possible to ruin his new life. In spite of the obstacles they face they refuse to give up and will do anything they have to to keep each other safe. I love the quirky townspeople as they add so much to the story and Sinjun's dad is amazing. I have never read a book by this author that I didn't love and I can't wait to see what she has in store for us next.
I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy of this book.
I dare anyone try to say that the prologue didn’t get them emotionally amped up. I could feel the adrenaline pumping throughout that entire scene, and I was on the edge of my seat, worrying whether Sinjin would get out in time. As hard it it was, it was a brilliant way to begin the book. I was invested by the third paragraph.
This book is not angst free, but it has enough other things going into the story that it doesn’t feel heavy. These two men are both lovely, easy to root for, and written so well. I enjoyed the organic feel of their romance. They’re both dealing with painful issues. Sinjin’s including a history of abuse from a previous relationship. Although it’s in his past, it turns out that it’s going to try to reclaim him in the present.
I’m not sure what T or C is like in real life, but I want to believe it’s similar to the town in the story. I enjoyed the townspeople. The town in the book is one I would love to live in. I love green chilis already, so it wouldn’t take long to win me over, food wise.
Overall I really enjoyed this book, and I’m looking forward to reading more by BA Tortuga!
***I voluntarily accepted an ARC from Gay Romance Reviews. My review reflects my own thoughts and opinions***
Abuse is abuse is abuse and is never justified. After ten years of marriage to his violently abusive husband Sinjun has finally found the courage to strike out and leave. He finds himself in NM and the owner of a run-down resort that he renames Rainbow Spa and Lodge. Here is where he finds friendships and a strong attraction to his rancher sans handyman Rhys. As Rhys discovers the level of abuse Hal subjected Sinjun to his naive eyes were opened and he soon learned "Shit, his man was a brave son of a bitch. Down to the bone." The touch of the supernatural in the Indian spirits that Ms. Tortuga incorporated was a wonderful and suspenseful touch that added to the mystery and much deserved deliverance to Hal's fate. All the citizens of T or C graciously accepted enveloping Sinjun into their close nit family. This is what Sinjun was looking for all along; a magical place to wash away his heartache and fears. This was a very satisfying read for me for the ARC I was given.
This was a terrific story of finding love and healing in a beautiful and magical place. Rhys and Sinjun could have been a bit of an odd couple, but instead they were perfect together. I loved that they fell for each other almost immediately and never wavered from those feelings. Rhys was estranged from his family back in Texas, and Sinjun was building a good life after escaping a horribly abusive marriage in California. Their new home of Truth or Consequences, New Mexico, was exactly where they were meant to be. The town was full of nosy and caring friends, and the land was full of healing springs and strong spirits. When evil came looking for Sinjun, he couldn't have found himself in a more supportive place. The characters here were distinct and likable, especially Sinjun and Rhys. The descriptions made me feel like I was right there with them, for the good and the bad moments. The author has given me a new favorite, which will be pulled out when I need to see loving goodness unafraid to battle heartless evil. This was a wonderful story, and I'm so happy that I read it.
I am a fan of everything I have read by BA Tortuga so far and this book did not disappoint me. There was love, family, even a little danger and a touch of the supernatural. Sinjun escaped from a very abusive marriage and is trying to start a new life in the town of Truth or Consequences. He has bought an old hot springs resort and wants to transform it and reopen it. Rhys is a cowboy who owns and operates his own ranch. These two characters hit it off right from the start. The hot springs spa resort is almost its own character. I loved the charm of the place and Sinjun was such a lovable character. He still struggles with his own self worth but he is determined to be his own person and not let his ex stop him from living his own life. I really enjoyed this book!!
Romance, love, humor, mystery, spirits (some vindictive and some protective), great characters, professional and personal strengths, family discord, a stalker and a plot that twists and turns and keeps you engaged.
You'll discover new things about New Mexico, even if you've been there several times or live there. You may find yourself plotting out a new trip! You may want to stay a while in T or C so you can get to meet some fine people and fall in love too.
Best of all are the main characters. They are very different from each other in careers, but they know love when they find it and fight for each other and their dreams.
This was an awesome story!! Sinjin has left an abusive partner and is starting over. He has bought the Rainbow Spa and Lodge. He meets Rhys. Rhys and Sinjin have an immediate attraction. Rhys helps Sinjin get the Lodge ready to open. They go on a couple of dates to get to know one another. There is a bit of a stalker mystery looming over their heads that quickly escalates. Both men have emotional baggage to get over. The secondary characters really helped to make the story; it was well written. I liked the paranormal aspect to it!! I highly recommend the story but be careful about triggers of domestic abuse. I am voluntarily leaving a review form an ARC that I received. My reviews are solely based on my thoughts and opinions.
4.5 stars A great start but a horrible one for Sinjin runing. In a new town Sinjin is the new owner of the Holden Hotel in town. A new freindship and romance happen between Sinjin and Rhys. Its not long before trouble finds Sinjin although Rhys tries to help keep him safe. A great story written for a cowboy rancher and a hotel owner. • domestic abuse & child sexual abuse (off page) • stalker and danger • haunted hotel • community spirit and more Then- Sinjin was running for his life from a abusive husband with minutes counting. Now- Rhys worked as a cowboy when Sinjin 30+ yrs stopped to ask directions.
I'm always excited to see a new 'cowboy' book from BA Tortuga and this was no exception. Watching Sinjun insisting on being himself, after everything he'd been through, was heartwarming. His love of life and enthusiasm for working on his dream is sweet and fun. The immediate sparks between Sinjun and Rhys are palpable and keep us rooting for the relationship between the two. Both men must deal with their pasts and leaning on each other is the only way they'll survive. Between Rhys' estranged family and Sinjun's abusive ex, they have much to overcome; but with the help of friends, family and the Rainbow Lodge itself, they prove they can do anything together.
Whenever I read a VS Tortuga story, I get the warm fuzzies. This story is an excellent example of that. Sinjun and Rhys hit it off right from the start, though Sinjun is a bit skittish - with good reason. Sinjun has left a horrid situation, making a new life. Rhys and the people of T&C help do that with love, humour and friendship. There is an undercurrent of suspense with Sinjun's ex stalking him, but it ends with a bit of a magical twist. Really enjoyed this!
I am a big fan of this author, but this story is my favorite so far. I love the New Mexico setting and the details about getting the spa up and running and renovated were really interesting. I adore books where you get details about the business a character is involved in. Roger Ebert used to love films that take you inside the world of work and that's me with stories. Then, you add in the wonderful characters of Sin and Rhys, the heat they generate together, the nasty family and evil stalker plot aspects and this was a book I started and finished in one sitting.
This is a bit of a different storyline than most of BA's books. This one is more suspenseful. Sinjun and Rhys both have bad pasts. Sinjun's is violent and still after him. Where as Rhys' is hateful, unforgiving family issues that won't let go. The story lets you fall in love with a beautiful quirky New Mexico town full of lovely people that turn into more family than neighbors. You get to meet Sinjun adorable dad (Arlo) and are there through Sinjun and Rhys falling in love and fighting for their right for life and love. This is a very well written story and has more than a hint of spirituality/zenness in it. It is definitely a must read and has been added to my keeper/read over and over list.
Absolutely fabulous book! I loved Sinjun and Rhys story. They are such great characters and finding strength in themselves, each other and the land. Sinjun left a bad situation looking for healing and a new start and found a cowboy that seemed to be waiting on him. I can’t wait to see if there might be a follow up book so I can catch up with all the characters from this book.
I received an advanced copy of this book for an honest review.
What an intense read. What makes this one so good is not on the surface. When you truly dive in and sink deep into the story you get the full affect. It’s those not so obvious gems that give this it’s true power. Beyond Rhys and Sinjun. Though the way handles the decision with his dad’s ranch was beautiful. It shows the real power of doing the right thing which this whole book leads with in a subtle way. I love stories like that. So much more than a romance.
I loved Truth or Consequences. It was just a bit mystical and I thought it definitely added to the story. I loved Sinjun and Rhys’ relationship. It built in such a simply obvious way that they were meant to be together. It was fast-paced, there was definitely some action, but lots of love, romance, super hot sex and great men. I liked all the other characters, they really added to the story. I absolutely recommend this book. I love visiting New Mexico and Texas with BA Tortuga’s books.
Two souls who find each other in the desert. Sinju has bought a hotel and Rhys, the cowboy, will help him fix it. There’s an element of suspense with Sinju’s ex on the loose with an obsession to get him back. The MCs are funny and have great chemistry. Rhys is quite understanding and lovable. Sinju’s past and hurt will rock the relationship for a bit but both characters are strong and determined to overcome everything. Nice romance!
The portrayal of abuse was OTT to the point it almost minimized how horrible real DV is. Also, just because Rhys is from a small town doesn't mean he has never encountered DV before and to have to Google it because he somehow gets it mixed up with BDSM is super weird. The whole scene where Sinjun reveals his abuse and Rhys reacts was gross and killed it for me. The paranormal left turn was also super weird.
Such a beautiful story trying to take control of your life, Sinjun has had a bad relationship and trying to pick up the pieces of his life. He buys a place to fix up and have a place to be his. The place has special vibes and also he meets Rhys a ranch owner who has his own demons he is fighting. the make a amazing couple and help each other to become happy in life.
