Rakhi Anand's novel Dev the Divine is an amazing story of a common man's journey to greatness. It is an inspiring tale brought to us by Locksley Hall Publishers, which highlights the value of hard work, sacrifice, and kindness. I really enjoyed reading this one.
Raj Narayan was one of the best lawyers in his town, but his untimely death put his family in trouble. With no source of income and little resources, the eldest of Raj Narayan's six children, 14 year old Dev took up the onus of supporting his family. He got a job as an assistant with homeopathic doctor Dr. Banerjee and continued with his education at the same time. The hard times the family went through and how they did not have enough to eat on most days is very emotionally portrayed in the book.

Dev soon became an indispensable member of the Banerjee household with his hard work and dutifulness. The Banerjees returned the favour by supporting Dev's family a great deal. It was awe-inspiring to learn about the Banerjee family, who selflessly supported Dev all through his life and even after his death.

After completing his education, Dev temporarily worked as a school teacher, where he was quickly promoted to the post of headmaster. However, soon he got a better job opportunity in Life Insurance Corporation of India and this job changed his life. Dev established himself financially, but he did not forget his duties. One by one, he found suitable grooms for his sisters and arranged their marriages. The way Dev convinced the boy's families was another amazing journey. Particularly the sequence when Dev and his friend spent the night in an open field, waiting to meet the groom's family the next morning, left a mark on my mind.

The Banerjees gifted Dev's family with their own house and land and they shifted from their old home. This kind deed by Dr. Banerjee and Ajoy also moved me a lot. Not only Dev, but these two people were also divine persons. It's hard to find such souls in today's world!

Dev made good progress in his career and married off his two brothers too. He also helped a few other relatives get suitable jobs. He took the responsibility of one of his sisters, who had untimely lost her husband. At the same time, Dev was always a loving and caring husband and father, taking good care of his family.

While reading, I thought that Dev's life has come to a full circle after he divided his property and married off his youngest brother, Lalit. But there was more to the story. His brief stint in Assam and sudden death presented a wholesome and realistic account of his life. The hardships faced by Dev's wife Maya after his death and how Dev's friend Ajoy Banerjee supported her in this period is also heartwarming.

I was much inspired by the courage, determination, and resilience of the protagonist Dev and learnt a lot about the indomitable human spirit from this book. The amount of details with which the author has described each scene is impressive. It just paints a picture in front of your eyes and I could visualize many scenes in the book while reading. The language used is beautiful and it captivates the reader right from the start to the finish.

A multi-generational coming-of-age story that tugs on your heart strings, "Dev -- The Divine', is about the eponymous character Dev, his parents and children, as they eke out their living in a humble village, before making developments in their lifestyle. What starts off as an impoverished but smart child morphs into one of the most generous men in his locality. From tutoring sessions, to learning homeopathy, and from striking an entry-level job to getting hard-earned promotions, Dev's transformation is inspiring and underlines the importance of humility, persistence, and kindness as one treads in life.

The story is close to home, and anyone who has tasted the dejection of an impoverished life would relate to it. The beautiful rural setting adds charm to the story.

Narrated with tenderness and honesty, Dev and his family make you root for their happiness during tough times and revel with them in their moments of joy.

When I came to know that the story is based on real people, it made me like the characters tenfold. The author, Rakhi Anand, has bared her heart and soul to the characters in the story. After closing the book, it instilled in me a sense of gratitude for all the things I have and made me look forward to life with positivity.

'Dev the Divine' is a beautifully woven tale with relatable characters. It follows the life of Dev, who loses his father at a very young age and faces the responsibility of taking care of his younger siblings. His struggle to provide the best for them while even relegating the needs of his wife and children and succeeding amidst trials and tribulation depicts his great love for family values. His loyalty and friendship is also commendable. Each character is strikingly defined by the author and makes us feel that we are actually visualizing life as it actually unfolds. Kudos for a tale well written.
