n this engagingly funny romantic 90-minute short story, Eric Alton commutes daily on a downtown bus. From afar he admires Angie, a beautiful young woman, and one day while on the bus she does the unprecedented and unthinkable - she sits beside him. She carries a briefcase and is dressed as a conservatively attired business professional, but soon Eric learns she is anything but, as the sparks and the lies fly.
1.5 Stars for ANGIE’s Occupation by E Ryan Janz, an extremely unusual short story.
MY RATING GUIDE: 1= dnf/WHAT WAS THAT?; 2= Nope, NOT FOR ME; 3= This was okay/cute; 3.5= I enjoyed it; 4= I liked it a lot; 5= I Loved it, it was great! (I seldom give 5 Stars).
I selected ANGIE’s OCCUPATION thinking it would be a quirky Suspense Spy novella or a Mystery. It was neither. And after reading it, I’m still not exactly sure what it was - Satire? a Spoof? a Dark Comedy? I either didn’t understand it, or it simply wasn’t for me. I deleted it from my library and I have no interest in purchasing additional titles. I will say I thought the cover was intriguing.
READER CAUTIONS - IMO not appropriate for YA readers or those who prefer Clean fiction. PROFANITY - Yes. Strong language is used. VIOLENCE - Yes. Brief mention/themes of violence are included. SEXUAL SITUATIONS - Innuendos.
I would not call this short story romantic, funny, OR engaging but would liken it more to a Monty Python skit more than anything. The cast of characters is eclectic, and everyone has a story to tell that’s completely unbelievable; therefore, the reader can never really decipher truth from lies.
The concept of meeting 5 people at a bus stop is interesting; however, the intrigue of who these people are is wasted on the fact that no one divulges the truth.
This book seemed to start somewhere in the middle for me and left me in the dark for the limited pages. It was wordy without a reason to be. Honestly, it just wasn't for me and I'm glad it was a borrow from KU.
