I am an author, award-winning travel writer, underwater photographer, and avid scuba diver. Citizen science has allowed me to visit the seven continents of the world, assisting scientists. My passion has led me to cage dive with Great White Sharks, scuba dive alongside endangered Dwarf Minke whales, photograph and ID Manta Rays, Whale Sharks, and other large pelagics. I am fascinated by all the creatures in the ocean, and particularly enjoy photographing faces. Through scientific expeditions with various organizations, I have become acutely aware of the dangers of climate change. I have made it my mission to educate others on the importance of protecting our oceans and the precious lifeforms that dwell in them. My book is the result of my many expeditions and experiences. Many people are interested in conservation, but few go out of their way to find out how to help. What better way for people to learn than through their children? Anyone with a passion and interest in protecting our Earth can make a difference, including kids. One does not need a Ph.D. in marine biology to encourage others to save the ocean. My experiences are a testament to the effects of crowd-sourced science, and how anyone can do far more than they ever dreamed possible. I encourage everyone, especially kids, to participate in citizen science and volunteer travel, learn about the ocean, and help preserve our ocean resources. As a former University Lecturer and College Consultant, I believe that knowledge is power, and education is always a positive force.
I loved the images in this book, they were bright, vibrant and really showed the lovely fish that we have in the seas and oceans. I liked the facts that the book had too.
The only thing I didn’t really like was the way the book was almost a little preachy about looking after the environment, I will teach my daughter that myself, we recycle, and reuse but she is only young and whilst I get the whole start them young thing, it was a little too much for me but other than that the book was great.
The book really needs to be read after the first book in the series as it does have a few references to it and this is a follow on so it will make more sense to younger readers.
It is 4 stars from me for this one, highly recommended!
This is another fabulous fishy book full off facts and stunning photographs. This is a great addition to the Ocean Friends childrens series.
Not only is this book great for your little Ocean Lover it also contributes towards cause. BOTH book will give 10% of profits to various ocean conservation foundations, including Marine Megafauna Foundation.
I received a digital copy of this book from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review .
More Fish Faces is a colorful, fun, and accessible scientifically accurate picture book about tropical reef fish by Tam Warner Minton. Released 1st Sept 2020, it's 52 pages and available in paperback and ebook formats. It's the second book in the Ocean Friends series for kids.
The book provides a collection of the author's photos from locations all over the planet - from the Indian Ocean to the Pacific. The photos are annotated in text sidebars with factoids and trivia about the different species and general info about the ocean flora and fauna. Photos are labeled with the location and common name of the pictured species. Interspersed in the text are important concepts which are clearly defined and understandable. The author manages to convey these important lessons on conservation and stewardship without being strident or preachy. The pictures are very bright, clear, appealing, and colorful and will fascinate readers of all ages.
This would make a superlative choice for a family with kids or a home study unit for such diverse subjects as science, natural history subjects, oceanography and related themes, art, biology, conservation units, etc. It would also be a great selection for school and public libraries.
Four stars.
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.
The author of this title clearly loves tropical fish. Tam has traveled the world to visit reefs in places including Australia, Ecuador. Indonesia, Africa, Mexico, Thailand and more.
Tam’s book is filled with detailed photos of the fish faces that were encountered and facts about them. The author encourages the children who read this book to learn more about ocean ecology and ways that they can help the planet. There are also many fun facts.
If you know a child who would like to see eels, puffer fish, trigger fish and more, this beautifully photographed book is a good resource.
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this title. All opinions are my own.
My son 8-year old son and I came across this book serendipitous and it's a perfect book to engage children about marine life. The pages are filled with colorful photographs (taken by the author! Talk about multi-talented) and fun facts including the fishes' location. If you have a budding marine biologist in your midst, this book is perfect. The beautiful photos make you feel like you're swimming among the fish.
**I received and voluntarily read an e-ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.**
The opening section on sustainability and how to help fight climate change was really well written. It treats children like grown ups and still makes it easy for them to learn ways to make a greener, better earth. It's also written in a way that makes small changes a little more accessible to adults and probably more likely for adults to make those small changes.
Between lighting issues and things being stirred up to disturb visibility, it's never easy to take good photos underwater, but the author has managed to do a fantastic job.
Some of the color choices for backgrounds took away from the photos, but overall, the book gets a solid 4/5.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing this book in exchange for an honest review. Any kid (or adult kid) who enjoys fish will love the pictures of these fish. The layout of this book is bright and colorful. The tidbits of information on the various fish and how to help their environment are a great part of this book.
A great kids book for ocean lovers! The pictures are bright and engaging and there are lots of interesting facts. Did you know that most ice cream contains kelp?! The author makes suggestions on how to protect the oceans.
1st. The designer of this book did not do a great job because part of it were very hard to read especially in digital. Thin white text on top of neon green is not ideal. 2nd. This is an interesting book for kids to learn about different tropical fish and how to make sure they are protected.
Thank you to NetGalley and TMW Publishing for a free digital copy for my review.
I had not read the first book in this series, so I was looking forward to what I thought would be is simply a children's book showing different fish and information about them. I was half right. While the book certainly does show a variety of fish, we actually learn nothing much about them in the first pages. Instead, those crucial first pages appear to be a vehicle for the author to express her views on environmentalism and how it relates to the oceans. This section did come across as a little preachy at times, which I'm never a fan of in children's books. That’s not to say the author didn't share good information about actions that children or families could take to be more environmentally conscious and protective. The book did finally give way to more photos and actual fish facts. Perhaps that environmental section should have been placed in the back of the book. I've often seen children's books focus on the promise of the title and subtitle first (in this case, fish faces and facts) but then include a more tangential topic in the back.
I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.
I read this book on my phone, as I didn't realize that the copy that I was going to receive would not work on my Kindle. I did not subtract anything from my rating for this but definitely feel like it would be better on a tablet or hard copy. It actually made me a little sad that this was on my phone and not my tablet because it takes up a lot of memory on my phone and I was hoping to share this book with my son. My son typically tries to steal my phone, so I prefer to use the tablet which he has yet to figure out that he can grab.
I picked this book up because we love fish in my home. We have several tropical fish tanks and love looking at the fish in the fish store. My husband and I have both been snorkeling in the Caribbean and this book brought me back to those fond memories.
The book is filled with pictures and has a ton of colors. It is set-up in a really attractive way and is a huge attention grabber. The one thing that I did not like about some of the photos was having the writer in them. I felt like it detracted from the animal itself that was being depicted in the photographer.
The author starts the book off by explaining a little bit about the book and her previous books. It then gives you the locations of all of the places that the book takes you. The book is filled with a ton of fun facts about each animal, the ocean, and even tips on how we can work on protecting our ocean and ocean friends.
It is written very simply and it should be really easy to read with a young child. The author even explains what some words mean. For example, she explains what "boycott" means in a way that a younger reader could understand it.
A wonderfully detailed book about many different species of fish. The author uses fun layouts, bright colors and beautiful pictures. I think both children and adults would enjoy reading and learning with this book.
The photography in this book is incredible, and the facts placed throughout are great for all ages of ocean lovers. My favorite are the sea horses, but I liked every section.
In her visually arresting series about tropical reef fish, Minton pairs striking, colorful pictures with information about the characteristics, habits, and diversity of these ocean vertebrates.
In the first book in the series, Minton covers everything from differences and similarities between tropical reef fish and mammals, common fish characteristics—the way they breathe oxygen, how their scales protect them, the effect of sea warming on their bodies, their sixth sense known as Lateral Line—and also various types of reef fish including innocent looking and yet highly poisonous pufferfish, the angelfish, a cleaner fish that lives in a symbiotic relationship in coral reefs, butterflyfish, the weird looking filefish, and the master at camouflage frogfish among others.
Calling oceans vital to life on earth in the second book, Minton explains how oceans help humans by absorbing plenty of carbon dioxide and turning it into oxygen, and how coral reef plants and animals are used in medicines to treat various diseases. She explores concepts of climate warming, its effect on fish and other sea life, and how we can help keep oceans safe. Striking colorful images depict a variety of reef fish underwater, including eels, triggerfish, parrotfish, seahorses, scorpionfish, and anemonefish among others.
Minton also includes projects for ocean lovers and budding marine biologists: the reader is encouraged to find various locations across the world on the map where she took photographs of the fish in her series. A variety of fun facts about reef fish add to the intrigue. The accessible text is supplemented by stunning photographs that beautifully capture the diverse attributes of reef fish while evoking a sense of their mystery and allure.
A child-appropriate tone and playful prose combine to create an arresting and informative read. Everything fish lovers could ever hope to know about the tropical reef fish pours forth between the pages of these striking picture books.
This is an engaging and visually sophisticated addition to young readers’ libraries.
More Fish Faces: More Photos and Fun Facts about Tropical Reef Fish by Tam Warner Minton is the second book in the Ocean Friends series. This volume offers readers more fun faces and more fun facts for fish fans young and old. Colorful photography — including the names of every fish featured — creates a colorful dive log worth experiencing again and again. The photos and fun facts are presented in small and easily digestible bites so your child can enjoy learning in short bursts or longer reads. It is a wonderful book for bedtime. Concepts like recycling, re-purposing, and sustainability are presented with photos and practical examples that are easily understood. 10% of profits will go to the Marine Megafauna Foundation to continue their scientific research to protect our oceans and ocean giants.
More Fish Faces: Photos and Fun Facts about Tropical Reef Fish offers readers exactly what the title suggests, a continuation of the colorful photographs and interesting information the All Fish Faces gave readers. Again, I found that the photographs were high quality and worth looking through the book all by themselves. I liked that each picture is also clearly labeled and that the accompanying information boxes were well written and chosen for the audience. I think animal and ocean loving readers will adore this book and its predecessor. I learned a few things, and really enjoyed the photographs.
A truly colorful book, with a friendly and attractive design, large print and magnificent photos.
Throughout the book, the author invites children to take care of the oceans, she mentions eco-friendly proposals that are easy to carry out at home. In the first half of the book each page is organized in two ways. On one side (indistinct left or right) there are comments that highlight the importance of the ocean to sustain life, oxygen provider, ecosystem balance, climate change, the resources it provides, eating sustainable fish, using ethical products. And on the other hand, we find interesting data and fun facts about fish species.
In the second half, it is dedicated to attractive and fascinating families of fish, such as pufferfish, angelfish, eels, triggerfish, parrotfish, seahorses, scorpionfish, trumpets, coronets, anemonefish.
A very comprehensive look at ocean life. This book has enough detail to satisfy the more avid reader, but also a lot of colorful large pictures to encourage curiosity. Some of the more complicated words or concepts are explained in side bubbles. Activities are suggested for learning such as finding places on a map, which is very beneficial. A great educational book for middle school and beyond, and possibly younger readers who have an interest in ocean life as well.
The pictures were great, but my copy had all the words mashed together. Incorrect spacing, most punctuation missing; very difficult (almost Impossible) to read. But the pictures were so good, I'm only taking off 1 star.
My daughter loves when we read about animals, and do projects/crafts based round them, especially when they are colourful and exotic. This book gave us a chance to talk about the different fish that live in the ocean and what they look like. She loved it and really enjoyed learning all about them.
Great Photos and Fun Facts! Beautiful underwater photos with many fun facts about the fish! Great book for kids who love fish. But I even enjoyed it myself!
