Wraith King #1-4

Wraith King: The Complete Series

Rate this book
A world where the sky is on fire and the air tastes of ash. A prophecy that tells of a coming savior. An immortal overlord who holds the very gods in his fists.

When I woke up in a place called Hell, I thought it was a practical joke. But it became distinctly less funny when people started trying to kill me. With a succubus, a number of elves, and a Hellhound shifter at my side, my first instinct is to find a way back to my own world. But there’s a powerful darkness within me, and maybe I don’t have that option. Destiny is calling, and her voice is loud.

As required by U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) regulations and Audible requirements, I am disclosing that I was given a free review copy of this audiobook at my request. I have listened to the audiobook, and I have voluntarily left an honest review. Receiving a review copy did not influence my rating nor my review.

“Wraith King: The Complete Series” features the complete adventures of earthman Jon, who finds himself teleported into a strange world where even the water isn’t safe to drink. I’ve previously reviewed the first two books, so I’ll focus on books three and four in this review.

First, the narration continues with TJ McKenzie and Melanie Hastings; TJ continues to effect a very odd accent which takes some getting used to, but isn’t really bad…just unusual. Melanie is fantastic, as always.

In Book 3, Jon continues to be plagued by very violent nightmares as the pull of his darker side seems to grow. Searching for the regional warrior lord, he encounters a man, Maelon, with his own harem. Maelon suggests he seek out the wood elves, who may know of the seer he seeks (to learn more of the prophecy).

Well, Jon is in Hell, after all, so the wood elves aren’t particularly friendly until they learn he’s met their captive queen, and is willing to help rescue her. Busy, busy, Jon. He begins to tire of chasing the prophecy, and yearns to simply protect his loved ones from the many dangers of Hell. Book 3 ends with Jon having killed an important character while lost in battle lust.

In Book 4, Jon and his companions return to Nya and Syn at Blackhold castle. Nya is pregnant, and Jon despairs that if he gains the title of Wraith King by killing his father, that he will become as evil as he and things won’t turn out well for his unborn child.

Jon gets more advice from his mother, and everyone heads off to confront the armies of the Wraith King. I don’t want to give away any spoilers, so I won’t provide any further details. The battle is fierce, many die, but in the end we get a much happier ending than we might have been expecting for what has been a fairly dark series.

I liked this series, and fans of darker fantasy such as Lord of the Rings will likely enjoy it as well!

Audiobook: This was my first experience with Jack Porter's work, and my entertainment was split between the two different fantasies represented in the story. On the one hand, there was an entertaining dark fantasy complete with an evil king, various fantastic creatures, and exciting battles. Each successive book was better than the previous one as things built up to a thrilling conclusion. On the other hand, there was a sexual fantasy complete with in-depth descriptions that I found distracting and unnecessary woven throughout all the books. TJ McKenzie's and Melanie Hastings' narrations were great, and their performances added to the story's entertainment. I was given a free copy of the audiobook, and I have voluntarily posted this review.

I forced myself to read the first book in this collection and … yeah … just so boring and bland and badly written. The events that happen only happen because the author forced them to happen. Why does it take place in Hell???? No reason. Absolutely none. It could have been a fantasy world named Lleh and it would not have changed a single thing about the story. The characters are all flat, boring, there’s no arch to anyone and it’s just a story that probably was written in less than a month just to put something out rather than you know … write something … good. So yep, sending this one back to kindle shelf and moving on to something that is hopefully better.

Great fantasy!

This is what great fantasy reads like, full of magic and adventure. The characters make the world realistic, with their struggles, loses and wins. And let us not forget the erotic moments that gives it a little spice. I totally enjoyed this read and fans of great fantasy will too.

not good.

It’s just not good.

The book is a slog. The world is poorly detailed, the main character is about as engaging as a pair of wet socks, and the ‘love interests’ are not interesting.

I would not recommend reading this book. Skip it. If you want engaging smut, fan fiction exists for a reason.

Difficult to get in to

I found myself completely turned off the book within 50 pages or so because the MC comes off as extremely stupid, maybe he gets better later but I can't be bothered to find out.

A mammoth read

This story is an edge of your seat one. IT starts steady, then begins to accelerate. The ending is well managed. If you like adventure, you will like this.

Audiobook has the main character sounding like Johnny Depp from Dazed and Confused. His every inflection is annoying... If you can get past that, it's decent.
