This first book in a new LitRPG series had me engrossed in reading right from the start. The hero is a young man who had been planning on enjoying the adventures in-game with his team of friends, however as they were still newbies they came upon a cottage of an old hag who caught Terran and sent him to a land far from his teammates. Terran had to survive as best he could on his own in a forest terrain which he was certain was full of wild animals. The first he came across was a massive white spirit bear and a Grey rock leaf lynx whose foot was trapped. Terran freed the lynx who in turn saved him from the bear, he called her Luna and they became companions. Luna was later his bonded animal and they could communicate without words. They meet many dangerous things on their travels across the forest namely massive crag trolls and a trio of human players who tried to bully Terran. Terran found the mother seed which had been stolen from the rock leaf elves by the crag trolls and his first quest was to return this to its home where the mother tree had been in Gneiss Glen. There Terran and Luna met Petram, the shaman of the elves and the spirit guide for the sacred valley, and he told Terran that the mother tree had chosen him to be her champion. He planted the seed and returned the mother stone tree to all its glory whereby other tree elves felt its growth and returned thus Terran became the leader of a new settlement which he built up to make a home for the returning elves. I really love the idea of the Mother Stone Tree and the lore attached to the elves who were the protectors of this tree. I also love the courage Terran shows and the many innovative ways he finds to solve his quests, I also really enjoyed the snarky and sarcastic remarks Luna makes to Terran bringing a bit of light humour to the story but I hated the trio of villains who returned bringing trouble with them and who I am sure will continue to torment Terran in the following books. I am also looking forward to seeing the budding romance between Terran and Chanterelle blossom thus I am really eager to continue reading further into the series.
First, my review: “This was a fun book. I am glad that I read it. You should try it too.”
Over the past year it has become apparent that my reviews are somewhat antagonistic and I apologize to those of you that have taken offense. I think I had hoped to change peoples’ minds about reviewing works of art and that seems to have backfired spectacularly. However, I am still going to be true to myself and write what I believe.
To the author: Thank you for this chance to escape reality and enjoy the world you created! Keep up the good work.
To my fellow reviewers: Messaging me and reviewing my reviews is as productive as trying to shovel water out of the ocean. Stop. I get it. Let’s just all live peacefully.
To potential readers: Art needs to be experienced at an individual level. You are the only one that can determine what you like and don’t like. Don’t let others make that decision for you. You should definitely read the book and completely ignore all of the reviews. You are a much better judge of what you will like than anyone here.
I've enjoyed all of Thomas Carpenter's series so far. In fact, I just finished reading the Gamemakers series, his other litRPG series. There are definitely some really awesome moments and a few subversions of common fantasy tropes. First, Terran uses pinecones as a legitimate weapon, which is pretty fun. Second, Luna (his lynx animal companion) is really cool. I'm always a sucker for a lynx companion and I like that she just starts out intelligent and able to talk, rather than have a slow build in Intelligence and developing a connection with the MC. The other thing, and maybe the most important, is that I've never read as clear a description of how elves build houses in trees. Everyone knows that elves live in trees, but I've always found the descriptions lacking.
So this is definitely an awesome read, lots of action, good enemies, and some genuinely funny and/or kickass moments.
I chose 5 stars, because I did not want to put the book down. This is only the 3rd or 4th book in this genre that I have read, it's not my go to typically, but it is worth it. Loved the characters, and the quips. It had me chuckling. The story moves along nicely, I didn't get confused or lost. The authors painted great visual story. Romance was very light touch (a positive for me). Violence was really mild to nil Can't wait to read the next in the series.
A LitRPG hero being led by the plot rather than his own choices
Firstly, I liked the book. It was pretty much action point after action point. I felt the author could have let Terran have a bit more freedom of choice, even though he makes fairly questionable choices through out the story. The LitRPG element are somewhat minimal and Terran doesn't really attempt find out much about it through experimentation. He min maxes as a solo character and as a result is pretty weak at everything but his specialty. It was an ok book, but it could have been better.
An enjoyable read. The MC is a fun guy and I liked to follow his path, but the litrpg aspects were only weakly thought out, like a filter.
The story definitely progressed too quickly and left little room to have a real effect. Add to that the fact that the story also sometimes felt like leaving out important world building and you have a fun, quick read, but most likely not a story you will think about a week after finishing it.
Not my book. Things working too good for the MC. it feels too much choreographed and not as a number of unrelated events. Also seems a bit unreasonable for those two elves to be that rude to him after he freed them and restored their holy home and on the other hand he let them be mean instead of making a point. So i lost identification with the MC early and couldn't develop a good feel for the story afterwards.
Excellent start to this LitRPG series. Even if you have never read a book in this genre you will be pleasantly surprised. Get carried away to a world which reminds one of The Lord of the rings boiks and go on awesome adventures. Meet interesting characters with well thought out plot lines. I really enjoyed this book! Excellent read for young adult and up.
The characters were really engaging and the world building is phenomenal !!!
A fantastic and gripping story!!!
Even if you are not an RPG gamer, all fantasy fans will love this book and this different style of writing, it is definitely addictive! I highly recommend it, and the other series as well!
An exciting adventure posed as a video game. Heartwarming storyline full of adventures, battles, magic and romance. Perfect for a rainy afternoon. Looking forward to the next in series.
What an awesome new series! Terran is the perfect underdog hero. This book presents an enchanting world that will suck you in. I can't wait to see what happens next! Keep churning out the awesome stories, Tom!
As always, when I start a Carpenter book, I don't put it down til it's finished. All too quickly. Thankfully there are a lot of them. So you can binge read. Then start over, and read em all again. ;)
Nice direct start to what I hope will be a great new series.
Nice direct start to what I hope will be a great new series. Nice rhythm and action, some character growth. Outside world left to the imagination. A larger mystery shows its first steps in the background.
The book starts off with people in a game where they can level up and die to respawn. Elves and enemy’s abound. Fighting and ingenuity in the main character is shown by points rewarded and how they are spent
For all you lovers of litRPG books this is a must , as a series starter it has it all , an absolutely brilliant storyline with a great assortment of characters. Let the game begin !!! A group of gamers enter a world with the intent of having a good time until disaster strikes one team member who is re spawned but not with his team. This is his story and what an adventure he endured , to say much more would excusing the pun , give the game away. I can only say I absolutely loved reading this book and as such have no hesitation in completely recommending it.
