Corby King’s skill on the ice was the only reason he ended up switching schools his senior year. He was being scouted by pro hockey teams, and his new foster dad thought Corby was the key to the Cougars winning a state championship.
Cutting through red tape was easy when you had money to burn, but Corby didn’t complain. Playing for his rival team was a small price to pay for a better chance at a full-ride to college.
What Corby didn’t expect was to meet someone he’d grow to love as much as hockey. Emmeline Cushing grew up in a different world than him, but Corby was determined to claim the shy girl who stole his heart.
Black Mountain Academy. From the outside, it may look perfect and ideal—school uniforms, exemplary teachers, privileged students.
But anyone on the inside could tell you about the debauchery, the scandals, the drama, the forbidden--taboo--romances.
Because where Black Mountain Academy is concerned... never judge a book by its cover.
I absolutely adore reading - always have and always will. My friends growing up used to tease me when I would trail after them, trying to read and walk at the same time. If I have downtime, odds are you will find me reading or writing.
I am the mother of two wonderful sons who have inspired me to chase my dream of being an author. I want them to learn from me that you can live your dream as long as you are willing to work for it.
When I told my mom that my new year's resolution was to self-publish a book in 2013, she pretty much told me "About time!"
Safe sports story you say? Yes, please! Finding a safe story with a hero involved in any sport is like finding a unicorn. So when I find one, i gobble it up and it leaves me wanting more. I could have kept reading more about this couple.
HERO Corby was so great. Being in the foster system could have made him bitter and angry but he was thankful for all of the things people did for him. He was so devoted to Emme and I just swooned over him. Protective, loving and always was considerate of her. Great hero
HEROINE Emme was a sweetheart. She was shy but she let her claws out a couple times when the opportunity came. That’s what I like in a heroine, some who is sweet and quirky but if she has to, she’ll defend herself or someone she loves. And she loved Corby
OW DRAMA some jealous girls tried to be mean to the heroine. The hero had never been with any of them. Corby and Emme didn’t give them any power to come between them
OM DRAMA one guy who liked the heroine but he was also a non issue
STEAM some steam but not a lot
SEPARATION no separation
SECONDARY CHARACTERS I thought the best friends were great. Supportive and looked out for each other.
VIOLENCE no violence
SAFETY safe - no others after meeting. Heroine was a virgin but hero was not.
Owwww what can I say about this book!!! I absolutely LOVED it!!! Finding a safe sports book is rare and when I find one, it’s hard to put down. Corby was determined to keep Emme no matter the obstacles he had to go through. Emme may have started out shy, but with Corby by her side, she grew the confidence that she needed to stand by his side through it all. Gosh I didn’t want them to end!!
Safe read h virgin H celibate but not a MH No om/ow drama No sexual abuse past or present Epilogue 6 years out
Rochelle Paige never fails to make me swoon and fall so hard for her books and characters, no matter the genre or circumstances. Well in this newest beauty she takes it back to high school and y'all, this might be the swooniest Black Mountain Academy book I have read to date. Throw in loads of heat, so much goodness, and touches of suspense and you have quite the addicting, fast-paced little romance.
Charity is a new standalone in this what's becoming a new favorite of mine series and just you wait until you meet Corby and Emmeline. These two, be still my heart, packed quite the punch in their journey, filled me up with soooooo many emotions, and left me wanting a whole lot more by the last word.
Fans of the Black Mountain Academy and/or Rochelle herself need to run and grab this baby up. I promise you won't be disappointed a single moment.
One thing I love about series like the Black Mountain Academy series - reading stories from authors I didn’t know about.... Rochelle being one those authors. Rochelle drew me into Emme and Corby’s story and kept me there until the heart meltingly sweet ending. This is a low drama, low angst romance and I honestly loved every minute.
This was a very sweet story and different then the other Black Mountain Academy stories I’ve read. Emmeline and Corby have a instant connection when they meet and in that moment Corby knew he found the love of his life. Emmeline is so sweet and kind you can’t help but love her and Corby wasn’t what you initially think he will be, she was his everything.
This sweet hockey romance was just what I needed! No angst, no drama, just a lighthearted romance about two high school sweethearts.
Why can’t all high school boys be like Corby? Life had definitely handed him a difficult hand, but then he was given an amazing opportunity to attend a prestigious school to play hockey. And there he met the love of his life.
Emme is sweet, kind, caring, and generous. Beautiful but shy, she steered clear of the typical high school experience, opting instead to hang with her two best friends. Then she meets Corby, and is instantly smitten.
These two together are adorably cute and romantic. Their sweet story gave me all the feels and I loved reading it. This book is an excellent, feel good read with the perfect HEA!
Rochelle hit it out of the park, delivering a read that kept me glued to the screen from start to find.
The characters, particularly our two leads were fantastic. They weren't pretentious they were relatable and likeable. For me that is an absolute must.
The read was easy, it moved continuously and I LOVED that there was no pointless drama added. No cheating, no injuries, and no messy breakups.
Emmeline was sweet and just a regular girl. None of the flighty self absorbed girls that seem to constantly flood social media. She was genuinely nice. She had a heart of gold. And her relationship was Corby was swoon worthy. Slow build at its best.
Corby is one guy with his head on straight, his maturity and his laid back attitude is what I found most attractive. Sure he was hot but it was take on the situation he found himself in is what I found interesting. He didn't go off the rails. He appreciated the opportunity he'd been given. I think being accepted onto the team and welcomed made the difference. There was no unnecessary drama within that circle. It wasn't needed.
His foster parents, Willian in particular may have had ulterior motives for taking him namely hockey but they didn't hold it against him. The support William gave his and his encouragement of his relationship with Emme was awesome. Again it didn't need the normal cliche drama that tends to come with some of these books. Rochelle gave me a feel good read that made me smile.
"Her shyness was a f*cking turn-on. I loved knowing I got to see a side of her no other guy did."
Emmeline Cushing is the shy, sweet girl who has been ogling her new neighbour all summer. When she ends up being his guide on his first day at school, she can't quite believe that he seems interested in her.
Corby King is living the dream. He's landed on his feet and he's not taking anything for granted. He's determined to stay focused and make his hockey dreams come true. He never factored in meeting Emmeline - the beautiful girl who appears to be avoiding him since their first meeting. However, he takes it as a sign of encouragement when she turns up at his first game of the season and appears to be his good luck charm. He makes his intentions towards her very clear and life just feels all the richer with her in it.
"What just happened between us changes everything. You gave yourself to me, and there's no taking it back."
These two teenagers were so sweet and adorable together. Don't get me wrong, Corby has a hella dirty mouth but he's a real gentleman with honest life goals and a solid work ethic. I loved how much he cared about her and, in turn, I loved how Emme came out of her shell and became bolder and more assertive towards the bullies in her life. The two of them had a balanced relationship, an equal amount of give and take between them. I thought this was a fab, feel-good romance with plenty of heat.
This particular one I was in two minds about as I did love the main storyline but then they chucked into another plot that we see happening in a future book and it just to be honest felt out of place and it was like we are going to chuck in this whammy OMG moment but only gloss over it. Charity starts with Corby King our male hero growing up in the foster care system after his mum died and his father in prison. Corby has had one thing that he worked on and made a name out of himself, his amazing ability at hockey. It has captured the attention of one of the wealthiest families in Black Mountain. The family has never had any children and have decided to foster Corby so that he can come and play at Black Mountain Academy and lead them to the championship and win the trophy. It is a dream come true for Corby, now he can play to his heart's desire and never have to worry about anything else. Meanwhile, Emme is a shy bookish girl whose family is all about status but she never has been, what happens when she falls for Corby? Someone whom her mother would never accept and it doesn't help that her dad is a pushover. Can Corby and Emme overcome the obstacles and class ratings in front of them and make it work? Find out in Charity by Rochelle Paige. A gender reversal rags to riches story. This time the guy-Commoner might win the heart of the Princess.
I wasn't sure how I was going to feel about a high school romance. There are certain things I enjoy about characters that can sometimes be lacking in HS stories (maturity, for example; also HS stories can sometimes bring miles of angst, which is just not my jam!). Since I trust this author's writing, those things weren't an issue in this instance, thankfully!
Emmeline is sweet & shy in the beginning, and she doesn't lose any of the sweetness as the story progresses, but she does come into her backbone, which was great to see! Corby is a mature 17/18 due to his life circumstances, and his Alphaness is also on point. I highly enjoyed his drive & determination!
When they get together, their story continues with the sweet, adds an appropriate amount of spice when the time is right, and has some great hockey highlights! Thumbs up!!
I absolutely adore this book, it made my heart so happy.
I loved everything about this book. Emme is the sweet and shy girl, and even though she comes out of her shell during the book, she doesn't change herself for anyone, doesn't lose any of her sweetness and kindheartedness just to fit in. It's not a Cinderella story or a "she's all that" remake, Emme is perfect in Corby's eyes just the way she is, scrunchy and glasses included. Corby is just a genuinely nice guy. It's so lovely and refreshing that the heartthrob jock isn't an alphahole with a mean and dirty streak but a dang sweetheart, who doesn't care about the popular cheerleaders but only has eyes for the sweet girl.
I also have to give credit to the simplicity of the story. There is no manufactured drama. No hidden agendas or nefarious motives. Charity is the book version of the restore-faith-in-humanity videos and I am so totally here for that.
I've got to say I loved this story by Rochelle. I'm loving the Black Mountain Academy books! Corby is a pretty amazing hockey player who ends up going to Black Mountain Academy because his new foster family wanted him on the team. What he didn't expect was Emmeline Cushing, or Emme. I think it was love at first sight for both of them, but Emme was shy. They become friends and then slowly boyfriend and girlfriend. He is infinitely patient with her and she is the sweetest person he's ever known. When Emme has a falling out with her mother, things change. Charity takes you back to high school/young adulthood where you believed anything was possible. And that epilogue was the best! I always love reading Rochelle Paige! 5 stars
Corby has had to endure a lot of change in his life but his one constant has been hockey so when his foster family advises that his dreams of a future in hockey could be enhanced by attending Black Mountain Academy he isn’t about to say no.
Emme is a person that anyone would be lucky to have as a friend. From their first meeting they are drawn to each other and aren’t about to let anyone or anything come between them.
The way that Corby and Emme support each other proves how perfect they are for each other and seeing their relationship unfold is sure to touch your heart.
Charity is a sweet cute read. I loved the characters Emme and Corby. He’s a kid from foster care that has a chance to go to an elite private school. His character has been a relief. I love getting stories about genuine nice guys and that exactly what Corby is. Emmeline is the sweet, innocent rich girl who has captured his attention. Together they make an amazing couple. I really enjoyed this book and definitely recommend it.
This book just didn’t do much for me. I thought the beginning of the book was super cute but it doesn’t ever develop past that and cute with no conflict isn’t really the scene I go for in my romances. Also once the characters got intimate the book went down hill pretty fast for me.
I will say that I did really enjoy all of the hockey scenes!!
Really sweet, kind of a slow burn, high school romance. Emme and Corby come from two different worlds. Great story about family and the choices we make when standing for what we believe in.
Charity (Black Mountain Academy) by Rochelle Paige ⭐⭐⭐⭐
HERO - Corby King. High school senior and hockey player. Tall, broad-shouldered, and muscular with blond hair that’s a little on the longer side, crystal-blue eyes, and lightly tanned skin.
HEROINE - Emmeline Cushing. High school senior. Height-wise, is 8-9 inches shorter than Corby. Curvy with dark brunette hair and pretty brown eyes.
OVERALL THOUGHTS - I loved both Corby and Emmeline as individual characters as well as them as a couple! However, I’m not gonna lie, this story is kinda slow in the beginning. It’s not until about a third of the way in that anything really happens between the hero and heroine. .
Overall, though, I did really enjoy this story despite my issues with it.
Appearances and mentions from other books: Cole Travis from Rowdy Boy by Clarissa Wild is mentioned in passing. Knox from the upcoming Hate Me by Ashley Jade is also mentioned, along with a series of mysterious murders that may or may not be tied to him. Both of those books are part of the Black Mountain Academy series. Dillon and Faith from the Fortuity Duet (Fortuity & Serenity) by Rochelle Paige appear as side characters during an out-of-state campus tour. I’ve haven’t read the duet, but for fans of those books, Dillon and Faith are engaged and living together here with Dillon having graduated and Faith having started graduate school. And finally, Corby gets drafted to the Chicago Cavaliers, several team members of which have their own stories in Rochelle Paige’s Bachelorette Party series, starting with Sucked Into Love.
Charity by Rochelle Paige is part of the Black Mountain series. The Black Mountain series is a multi-author series of standalone books. Corby has been in the foster system for while. He's a great high school hockey player. For his senior year, he gets a new foster family and attends Black Mountain Academy. Black Mountain Academy is full of rich kids which is not what Corby is. He meets Emme at school. Emme is a shy sweet girl. Her mother is not very nice. Corby takes an immediate liking to her. These two are great together. This one is a sweet cute read.
Rochelle Paige wrote a 'high school' story that had very adult-like characters and no huge drama. Jealousy of a good relationship took place in this story but that is to be found anywhere. Corby and Emme are a great set of characters and deserve their happy ever after.
This was a very boring and overdone read to me. Wealthy but unloved girl meets outsider who cherishes the ground she walks on. Gives her unlimited orgasms by simply existing and then they live happily ever after. I wonder if these authors have actually been around 17-18 year olds sometimes...they're not like this lol
Corby is a boy who is in foster care after he lost his parents. His mother died in a car accident and his father is in jail. His salvation is hockey, a sport in which he excels so much that a family from Black Mountain is willing to let him with them during his last year of high school. On his first day as a BMA student he meets Emme, the girl who will change his life forever. Emme is his neighbor but she’s so shy that she hasn’t dared to introduce herself in all summer. On the first day of school, Corby invites her to the first game and she accepts, but for a month she avoids him, since she has doubts that a boy like him, who can have any girl that he wants, is truly interested in her. Game day arrives and Emme’s friends convince her to go. Corby wins and since that Emme will become Corby’s lucky charm. Their relationship is very beautiful and romantic, although they will have to face the strong opposition from Emme’s mother, who is a snob. But Emme and Corby will fight tooth and nail for their relationship. It’s super nice story with some sexy moments. Also in this book we’d see a little about the book “Hate Me” by Ashley Jade, which promises action since a serial killer appears in this book killing girls in BMA.
“I think we have Emmeline to thank for that. She’s my good luck charm now.”“Why does he think I’ll be at the games so often?” “Something you should know about hockey players; we’re superstitious as fuck.”“That’s why it’s so important for you to come to all of my games from now on.” “Hmm”—I cocked my head to the side and stared up at him with a smile—“that seems like an awfully convenient way to ask me to come watch you play again.” He shrugged, his grin widening. “But did it work?”
“Damn straight, you’re my girlfriend. I know we’ve only been seeing each other for a month, but I’ve wanted you since the first day of school. It would be pretty fucking dumb of me not to lock you down while I have the chance.” Her grin widened. “Consider me locked down then, boyfriend.” I couldn’t resist claiming her mouth, and we spent the rest of the ride kissing.
“And I fucking love your curves.” I buried my face in his neck and mumbled, “I might need to hear that a few hundred times before I truly believe it.” “I’ll tell you as often as you need, babe,” he vowed, stroking his hands up and down my spine. “Right now, what I really want is for you to show me.” I dug my fingers into his shoulders. “Make me believe.”“It’ll be my fucking honor,” he rasped, his hands going to the bottom of my shirt to pull it over my head. “It shouldn’t be possible, but you’re even more gorgeous than I imagined. And I did a fuck of a lot of fantasizing about you while you were avoiding me.” I offered him a sheepish grin. “Sorry.” “You can more than make it up to me by coming on my face.”
When they were gone, I pulled my cell phone out. I highly doubted that Corby had his phone out since they’d be leaving the locker room any minute now, but I pulled up our text thread and sent him a message. Me: Win or lose, I’m so freaking proud to be your girlfriend. “It helped a lot to have my good luck charm in the stands.” He set me down and claimed my mouth in a deep kiss. “But you started a new tradition tonight.” “I did?” I tilted my head to the side, trying to think of what I’d done differently and not coming up with anything. “Yeah, I’m going to need a text from you before any championship game from now on,” he explained, pulling his phone out of his pocket to show me the message I’d sent a couple of hours ago. “Oh.” I felt my cheeks heat. “I didn’t think you’d see it until after the game was over.” “I saw the screen light up when Coach was giving us a pep talk and checked it really quick before we lined up. And I’m glad I did because your message was perfect, baby.” He brushed his lips against mine again. “The only thing that’ll change on that text at some point is the last word.” I didn’t understand what he meant. “How so?” “Because it’ll need to say fiancée or wife at some point.”
I really loved this. I was in the mood for a sweet story, to break up the dark ones I’ve been reading lately. This is exactly what I needed. From the moment Colby meets Emme, he only has eyes for her. Before that he has never really had a girlfriend (middle school I believe) partly it seems because he is so committed to hockey and he has moved around a lot. Emme is really shy and sticks to her two best friends. While she hadn’t physically been bullied, she has been picked on for years by the mean girls. I loved how protective Colby was, but that he didn’t always need to fight her battles. She really blossoms after she begins dating him. She maintains her kind personality, but becomes so much more confident. I also loved that while Colby was beyond sweet to her abs basically the perfect boyfriend, he wasn’t boring. The author didn’t hold back on the steam. She didn’t take the fake route either thankfully, heroin didn’t go from from nun to vixen in .5 seconds. Their buildup was very real. There was time for him to know her and her him so it felt organic when they said or did things.
Safety: h is a virgin, hero isn’t, but hasn’t been with anyone in a long time (he makes a reference to not even owning any condoms since he hasn’t needed them in so long). There is no indication that he has ever been a manhoe, he just doesn’t think with his junk like that. There are zero scenes with other women or even thoughts about other women, aside from thinking about how she feels better than anything he has ever felt before. He is confident and knows when women want him, he just didn’t feel the need to screw someone just because he can. When the catty girls hit on him he immediately shuts them down. When he realizes they are mean to Emme he flares at them if they even look at him even he had only had one conversation with her. She has never dated anyone, but was embarrassed once when a guy claimed to really like her but went to a party and screwed a random girl the same weekend. The mean girls tease her about it a lot.
Spoiler (just because I want to leave a note to the author in case she reads her reviews) while I loved this book there was one thing that drove me a little nuts. The one thing that wasn’t organic and made zero sense was the timing of the “I love yous”. While I feel like the author was maybe trying to avoid the dreaded “instalove” title or maybe even trying to leave something for the end since this was such a sweet story, it just truly didn’t fit THIS story. This guy was all in with her right away. Even though he didn’t push her or do anything crazy, he was just amazing at being there for her. He moved her in with him when they were to there for 5 months, but still only halfway through their senior year of high school just because he was worried about her for Pete’s sake. When they had smex at 1.5 months into their relationship he told her something to the extent of “ this changes everything, you’re mine. I’m never giving you up now” so waiting until they’ve been together for 9 months for him to drop an “I love you” and for her to gasp and seem surprised just comes off as really insincere. It cheapens the love just a little bit, and I hate that because otherwise Corby was freaking perfect. I know that timeline works for other couples depending on their story, again it just made zero sense for THIS story. It definitely didn’t ruin it for me, but I just felt like I needed to mention it. It took so long I went back skimming through the book because I was convinced that I had missed it somehow! That was incredible distracting from the story.
Corby is a phenomenal hockey player, he’s currently a senior in foster care, his skills as a player has a wealthy man who was a player in his days at school becoming his new foster parent. William wants Corby to play hockey at his old school, Black Mountain Academy. He sets Corby up with the best of everything which only improves Corby’s game. Emme lives next door and has been spying on Corby all summer. She thinks he’s beautiful but she is extremely shy and doesn’t think a guy like him would be interested in her. Emme’s mom is a beauty queen and is very hard on her. The first day of school, Emme is assigned to give Corby a tour of the school.the two hit it off and Corby asks Emme to come watch him play since he has no family. Emme plans to go until the mean girls remind her that there is no way the hot new guy is into her. When her best friends find out they all decide to go and cheer Corby and the team. Corby is thrilled to see Emme at his game, and he dedicates his every goal to her. After the game he drops her off at her friends house. They begin spending time together at school and of course the mean girls notice, but Emme and one of Corby’s friends put them in their place. Emme joins Corby for a college visit and winds up loving the look and feel of the campus. She’s been accepted to Yale, but doesn’t really want to go there. Back home they continue to spend time together and Emme continues to go the Corby’s games. At the 70% mark is when they finally have sex, up until then, they just fooled around. Emme was a virgin, didn’t have any info on Corby’s past, but he does say he hasn’t needed condoms in a longtime. Emme’s mom tries to cause drama at her birthday party by inviting a boy who humiliated her freshman year. She confronts her mom and Corby tells the guy to leave. A murder takes place in their community and Corby knows no ones home with Emme most of the time, so he asks her to move in with him. William gives his ok and after talking her into it, Emme moves into the pool house with Corby. The team wins their championship and soon after everyone graduates. Epilogue six years later with Corby’s team winning the Stanley Cup and him bringing it to Black Mountain like he promised William. Emme is pregnant with their first child and his dad who was in prison released early with Emme’s dad’s help.

"Charity" is a Standalone book of the "Black Mountain Academy" series by the author Rochelle L. Paige. Told in dual perspectives , get ready to enter this twisted academy of lies and wonders once again!
I am so sooo obsessed with this series that it's borderline pathetic!! I mean I jump straight into these books , consequences be damned and then what is the best part is that I love each and every one of them!
Corby and Emmy were amazing! This was a plain sports Romance with very less twists and turns. The storyline was good and I loved the other characters too! Corby had a tough childhood because he was in the foster system. However those rough edges did not stop him from being sweet and devoted to Emmy. Emmy was an amazing character too! She was sweet and sassy which was the perfect mix for me. There was next to none drama in this book and I finished it pretty fast.
A definite recommendation to all the high school contemporary romance lovers out there!
All Corby King has ever wanted to do is play hockey, and do it well enough to catch the eye of scouts and earn himself a ticket to college. When his foster dad suggests that he switch schools and play for his rival team to get himself closer to a high school championship and that full ride scholarship he has his reservations, but decides it's probably his best shot at his dream. Going to a new school has him a little nervous, that is, until he meets Emmeline Cushing... it doesn't take long after meeting her to realize he is right where he should be!
Charity is a sweet heart squeezing little page-turner that will have you smiling throughout. It's starring characters are bound to win you over within a few pages, both are genuine level-headed kids with hearts of gold. I loved watching these two tip-toe around one another, and eventually find their way into each other's heart. Nothing is sweeter than young love, and these two proved that time and time again, they had my heart skipping a beat throughout. I really enjoyed what I found between the pages here, the words were engaging and heartfelt, and the characters were easy to connect to, I truly loved every moment I spent with them! I highly recommend you get your hands on this one, it's characters are bound to charm their way into your heart after the first page!
I requested an advanced copy of this title from the publisher, and I am voluntarily leaving my honest and unbiased opinion.
Charity is a different take on Black Mountain Academy. What I was expecting and what I got were two different things. Charity is a sweet, hockey romance.
Corby and Emme are not at all what I had planned on reading. Corby is sweet, and caring and perfect. Emme is sweet, caring, and kind. It's absolutely no surprised these two found each other. They are extremely relatable and their down to earth personalities just made me love them more.
Paige delivers a well-written, sweet, light hearted romance that had me completely shocked but still loving it. She put her spin on the Black Mountain Academy collection and gave us this amazing break in angst, and drama.
Rochelle Paige completely shocked me with this book and yet still made me love it. When you expect one thing and get something else in a book it's not always a good thing, but Paige made it a great thing. This sweet romance won me over.
~Corby King & Emmeline "Emme" Cushing~ My first read of Rochelle Paige and what a sweet read this is! Corby has been in the foster system since he lost his mom. Even though he has to deal with such a situation, he keeps aiming high. Until he gets an opportunity to uproot his life at Black Mountain Academy where he meets Emme.
Corby is hands down one of the sweetest H ever written. Not only sweet but his determination and perseverance to make a better life for him are also qualities I adore from him. He takes Emme out of her shell as she was really shy before she meets him. I love seeing Emme grows from someone who hides her thoughts to someone who stands up for herself.
This was a sweet romance read about two characters that come from two different worlds. I really loved this story and the way that the characters got together. I also enjoyed the ebay that the main characters were relatable and likable.
Emmeline was an incredible sweet teenager that was trying to navigate her way through high school as best she could. She was a sweet and caring character that was genuinely nice to everyone.
Corby, I absolutely loved and I really enjoyed the way he was a sweet and caring guy. I loved the way that he was with Emmeline and how incredible caring he was towards her.
I really loved this story and found moments throughout the story were completely swoon worthy. This is one story that I recommend a lot.
