Marian Fletcher Blackley, Duchess of Endsmere, has been on the run from the English Crown for weeks since killing her abusive husband…no matter that it was self-defense. She has only one safe place to go—the MacKinlay clan in Scotland, where her sister is the laird’s wife.
War Chief Cameron MacKinlay has vowed never to marry after witnessing his widowed mother’s grief. He has his lands and his clan, and that’s enough for a good life. When one day a sprite of a lass comes running out of the forest with hounds nipping at her heels and an English bounty hunter not far behind, he feels compelled to save her by claiming the disheveled duchess is his wife. But he certainly didn’t intend to marry her for real!
Very good story about an abused woman who killed her husband in self defense and ran to Scotland for safety. She married Can in handfast and he treated her oh so well. It was pretty much insta love but she had been brutally abused by her husband and had many scars inside and out. He wooed her and I enjoyed everything about their story. eventually she did have to return for the trial for the murder of her evil ex and I was so so angry. But something wonderful happened. I loved the ending and the epilogue. It made the whole book worth all the angst.
I'm going with four stars on this one, simply because it made me Feel Things. Oh the angst. There was so much of it, . Marian kills her husband, and as this in a time when self-defense wasn't really allowed as justification, much less even a mitigating factor, particularly when it was a woman committing the murder, the reader is aware that the clock was ticking and not in a good way.
But this book wasn't entirely an angstfest. I loved the character of Cam, who is a cinnamon roll Highlander. How did I not know that I needed this in my life before this point? I mean, yeah, he's a badass war chief, but he's a good guy, too. And he's hilarious at times, which brings some much needed levity in a story that would otherwise be quite bleak. I mean, there would be a big scene with drama, , and then Cam would say something a few paragraphs later to diffuse the situation that had me cracking up and laughing out loud.
I also loved the character of Mari, who was brave and strong and a badass survivor. And I loved her together with Cam, because they were seriously perfect.
I think the author did a great job of portraying the ripple effects of being in an abusive relationship.
The ending...
The pacing was a bit of a problem for me. There was a lot of action in the beginning and end, but the middle kind of dragged.
My biggest problem with this book, though, was the history, and I wavered a good deal between a rating of three and four stars before the Feels won out.
This book almost feels like it is set out of time, if that makes any sense. What I'm trying to say is that this book felt like it was written in a generic time period that had almost no historical detail to it at all. If you don't know your history of this time period, you may literally have no idea when it is set.
However, the author did give us a few historical tidbits that gave a span of a few years when the story could be set. She mentions King Charles, who ruled England from 1625 until his execution in 1649. I am assuming that it simply must be King Charles I and not King Charles II, for a few different reasons, which are under the cut because probably no one cares but me. And she also mentions Oliver Cromwell, a rabid Puritan, "abolishing" Christmas celebrations, or at least any celebrations that didn't line up with his beliefs. This happened from 1644 to 1660. Therefore, this story had to take place sometime between 1644 and 1649, and more likely towards the end of that time frame, because the author hints that this wasn't the first year that Christmas had been toned down.
This presents a major problem historically speaking, because in this span of years, there was a huge thing going on called the English Civil War. And it's something I know a fair amount about, because one of my ancestors, a seventeen-year-old Highlander Scot, fought for King Charles II in the Battle of Worcester in 1651. His side lost, obviously, and he, like thousands of other Scottish prisoners of war after Worcester, were transported to the American colonies as indentured servants, effectively squashing their rebellion, at least at the time. And I find that super fascinating, so I have learned as much as I can about the era.
So during this time period, the time period in which the book must be set, there is literally a civil war going on - and a bloody one. A civil war in which many of the Scottish people, who supported the monarchy and therefore King Charles, although not all Scots (since they did hand him over at one point), were involved in quite a bit.
But there is no real mention of war in the Highlands or in England in this book. Cam talks about wanting to attack the McCurdys for the MacKinlays' benefit, but that's about it, and that is a clan-to-clan battle, not an overarching monarchy-vs-parliament one. There should be talk of war in the Highlands during this time and plenty of it.
The author states that King Charles (by name at least once, and "the crown" several times) has to sign the warrant for her arrest , but from 1644 to 1647 he is concerned about, oh I don't know, saving the monarchy. And after 1647, he's pretty concerned about saving his own head (which he does not do) and is under house arrest. Cromwell is essentially ruling the UK at this time. It doesn't seem logical that King Charles would have put all that much effort into finding a Scottish woman who killed her English duke husband, ESPECIALLY since the Scots were among his biggest supporters.
Okay, I would TOTALLY GET IT if it was Parliament doing all of this, because this could have been a huge slap in the Scots' faces. But the author clearly states that it is King Charles, not Parliament. And no one is like, wait, you mean the king who is under house arrest? Why is he even involved in this? How can he be?
It also makes Lachlan a SERIOUS FUCKING BADASS, and no one gives him credit for it or seems to realize how badass he is.
Like I said, fucking badass.
So, historically speaking, this story just didn't ring true for me on many levels. That is not to say that I didn't enjoy the book - because I did, immensely! And I am definitely going to read the other books in the series. I'm already looking forward to the next. But as a stickler for history, that part didn't work for me at all. I just wish that a little more research had gone into this book. It could have either been set during a relatively peaceful time (I mean, it's the Scottish Highlands lol so there weren't all that many of those really, but perhaps a time where a war wasn't playing a huge role in all things) or the author could have used more historically accurate ways to achieve the same result (as detailed under one of the spoiler cuts).
Look, I know this doesn't matter to most people, but the reason I love historical romance so much is the HISTORY. I want to be immersed in the time period and see how other people lived. I want to learn new things. I know historical romance requires some blinders to enjoy it (or, at least, for most books), but I just couldn't look past the history in this case. I really tried hard not to be picky, but this is like one of my most favorite periods of Scottish history ever. I know that a lot of people gravitate towards the Jacobite era, which is also wicked interesting, but all of those later uprisings came from THIS era and a bit beyond. The whole reason they were called Jacobites is because of King Charles I's son, James (Jacobus = James). King Charles I's great-grandson was Bonnie Prince Charlie. Come on, give me the history in this book! I want it!
But I would still recommend the heck out of this book.
During one of his abusive attacks, Marian Blackley, Duchess of Endsmere, accidentally kills her husband and flees for her life. War Chief Cameron MacKinlay has vowed never to marry, but when Marian runs into his life - chased by dogs and British trackers - he proclaims her his wife...unintentionally handfasting and making her his in truth.
Cam is a perfect "cinnamon roll" hero, firm on the outside but soft and sweet on the inside. Despite not wanting a marriage, he is protective, gentle, and determined to win Mari over. After suffering years of physical and mental abuse from the Duke, Mari has a sort of PTSD. She wants to trust Cam, but her heart, mind, and body aren't on the same page. She also knows the happiness she's building away from England is on borrowed time.
This is my first experience with this author and it was very enjoyable. I liked the writing style and found the story engaging. The romance was well established and the secondary character were great additions. My interest waned a little near the end as Mari dealt with the problems from her former life, but I would definitely look for the next story in this series.
* I received an ARC and this is my honest review. #HerAccidentalHighlanderHusband #NetGalley
This was a happy surprise for me! I have never read this author before but I love a marriage of convenience trope, as well as Scottish heros, and the blurb describing the premise promised all of that. And it really delivered.
I can't spoil the way these two meet and end up together because it's DELIGHTFUL. But still, this is not a rom-com. Mari finds herself married to Cam after fleeing to her sister's home in Scotland after murdering her abusive husband in self defense. All of this happens IN THE FIRST CHAPTER. The last few reads I've had were a bit slow in pacing, and this book starts off with a bang and keeps delivering. The plot moves quickly, with a lot of action and character development. I was quickly sucked into the story and didn't want to put it down.
Cam is a true cinnamon roll hero. No brooding, reluctant hero here. He understands Mari's past trauma and cares for her just as he should. Mari is a heroine with quiet strength. She's not your typical hoyden "strong" heroine, but someone who has endured true trauma and survived. In fact, the abuse she suffers on page warrants a trigger warning for those sensitive to domestic violence.
This was really an enjoyable and easy read with a great emotional arc. There were a lot of great secondary characters, and even though there were some serious things that the characters had to deal with, the book didn't feel heavy the whole time. The ending, and the seemingly impossible situation these two faced, truly tugged at my emotions. I'm glad I took a chance on this one, and would definitely read future books in the series!
This is an interesting case of the characters being far more developed than the story. It's also oddly cute for such a dark plot - the book opens with Marian having just beaten her abusive husband to death with a fireplace poker. She spends most of the book being anxious and looking over her shoulder for the English who want to hang her for the crime, but the stakes rarely actually feel high, and the denouement is definitely underwhelming. I also spent much of the book feeling like I'd somehow missed the actual first book in the series, which does not appear to be the case.
Long story short, I enjoyed myself reading this, but in the aftermath, I find myself rather underwhelmed.
“It’s lovely. You are lovely. There’s not a one of us save the little ones who doesn’t bear scars. Wear yours with honor, lass, for only a survivor is able to wear scars.”
Wow! I was hooked on the first page. Marian Fletcher Blackley, Duchess of Endsmere, has been on the run from the English Crown for weeks since killing her abusive husband…no matter that it was self-defense. She has only one safe place to go—the MacKinlay clan in Scotland, where her sister is the laird’s wife. Enter, War Chief Cameron MacKinlay who has vowed never to marry and accidentally marries Mari. If it wasn’t for the fact that Mari was running from English soldiers trying to drag her back to kill it would have been the cutest meet cute. I mean she does climb him like a tree and accidentally marries him right in front of the soldiers.
“Whether or not she was his wife a moment ago, I assure ye they are now wed. They stood before witnesses with hands bound and declared themselves married. Under Scottish law they are hand-fasted, and it is a binding marriage.”
This starts our story. Now I have to say, I did like the story very much, but it’s so sad. She was tortured by her husband for years. He was going to kill her if she did not escape and she couldn’t escape. She was alone and an outsider. Cam was dreamy. I mean it. He was protective and caring. He was a good guy caught up in a bad situation. I loved how they feel in love. I love he was patient and understanding but most of all caring. He didn’t see her as a broken woman. He saw her as a survivor and I loved every minute of this sad story.
I do wish the middle had a little more action. I was getting tired of their internal monologues. Both characters hid things from each other, to help the other. My question is, did it help or hinder? I wanted to scream at them at times. They were both the silent martyr type and protective so they wanted to do everything. I just wanted a little more in the middle. But then the story picked right back up and I loved it all over again. I almost forgot the ridiculous ending. I get it, but there’s no way they’d let her go. None. She was going to hang for her actions. It seemed so childish. Not that I wanted her to hang but she did kill a man. At least get some prison time. Pay a fine. Something.
1.5 stars -- The beginning was really nice and I really liked how it seemed it would pan out, but I really disliked a good majority of this book.
eARC provided by the publisher & NetGalley
Trigger/Content warnings for: domestic physical abuse/assault (on-page descriptions + emotions and flashbacks pertaining to the experience), panic attacks, emotional abuse.
When I picked up this book, I was instantly intrigued by our heroine. She was so strong and I loved how her panic attacks and trauma from her previous marriage were discussed on-page and described. It was very well done. However, I felt like once I got past the first third of the novel, I lost interest and the writing just went downhill.
I had wanted more from the relationship, but once you hit a certain point, Marian's emotional struggles disappeared (even when she was assaulted AGAIN and kidnapped). During a couple of points of extreme stress (moments that would expect to cause a person to experience moments of panic due to their previous experiences), she had no reaction whatsoever and it just seemed really unrealistic that her panic attacks and trauma would disappear once she became slightly more comfortable because of her accidental husband.
Another issue I had was with the pacing. The middle parts of the novel had some good plot-driving and character developing moments, but it really just felt like a whole lot of nothing. By the time the characters made it to the end of the story, I was incredibly bored, uninterested in what the conclusion could have been, and annoyed with how it turned out.
This was just not my cup of tea.
I honestly wish I had just DNFd this instead of pushing through.
Her Accidental Highlander Husband, by Allison B. Hanson. Oh wow! This writer really gives her readers a romance story to fall in love with. Her writing is informative. It shares with the readers details on how people lived their daily lives back then, during historical times. She provided the readers imagination with descriptions and details of the landscape, the peoples homes and what they ate. This gives them the vision that enhances the story. The writer doesn’t drift away from the plot of the drama and romance that she wants to give her readers. The book reads with ease. It has a good pace for one to take in what the characters are feeling or going through. The writer gives her readers suspense, romance and drama that absolutely makes this a good book to read. Cameron and Marion meet in a not so believable situation, but when they do, two people walk away married. Hmh. How did that happened? Makes a woman want to runaway to Scotland. Grab herself a brawny Highlander by his arm and wrap a scarf around their conjoined hands. The writer really focuses on the romance and love that grows between Cameron and Mari. The two come together during a very tragic time in Mari’s life. She flees London to seek out her younger sister Keena in Scotland. Mari meets the Cheiftain Warrior Cam. Instantaneously the two are joined together. They settle into a relationship of convenience. So they say. Cam a warrior whose soul purpose of living, is to protect his family. He can see that Mari is going through something and is running from something. He works hard at trying to connect with Mari to save her from her nightmares. Together Keena and Cam try to convince Mari that she is safe with them. Slowly Cam’s love that he denies he has for Mari surfaces. And the safety and security from the strong handsome Highlander, has Mari feeling things that she hasn’t felt before. She wants to experience these feelings with Cam desperately. Cam claims it’s lust and Mari enjoys being literally swept off her feet. The two come together, to explore this burning passion that takes over their lust. That lust transforms over to wild lovemaking. As life begins to settle for the two, Mari’s past resurfaces. And this time the couple can’t ignore it. Suddenly, ugly secrets are revealed. Scars are uncovered. The community turns on their leaders. Kidnappings come into play at almost every turn. People are thrown into the gallows facing execution. Heated battles are put into action. Revenge has been chilled long enough. And a cold hearted duchess has met her match with a warm hearted, Cheiftain Highland Warrior. I recommend this book. Until next time my fellow readers...read on! I voluntary reviewed this ARC after receiving a free gifted copy.
After Marian Fletcher Blackley, Duchess of Endsmere, kills her abusive husband in self- defense, she flees to her sister’s clan in Scotland in search of refuge. Pursued by authorities in England, Mari runs into Cameron MacKinlay, the War Chief of her sister’s clan, and, in attempting to save Mari, Cam claims her as his wife. They agree to remain wed in name only since neither really wants to be married. But can they resist their growing feelings for each other, and what will happen when her past comes back to haunt her?
Her Accidental Highland Husband is a captivating and steamy historical romance with well-developed characters and a page-turning plot. Cam is a patient man, more attuned to his wife’s needs than his own. I find his character interesting, as his personality is so different from the stern warrior facade he presents to the world. Cam is funny and sometimes awkward. He is affectionate and warm, and he is amazing with children. In contrast, Cam is also fierce, bloodthirsty, and relentless in battle. He is a protector, a gentle giant, passionate with a good heart, all of which endears him to Mari.
Mari is a fascinating character, as well. A victim of abuse and on the run from her past, Mari struggles with fear, guilt, and shame. She longs to feel safe again, and living with Cam goes a long way toward her healing. Mari never had freedom, bound by the expectations of her family and the abuse of her first husband, but living with Cam and her sister’s family changes things for her. It changes her. Under their protection, Mari grows more confident and self-assured.
The romance between Mari and Cam is, of course, one of my favorite parts of the story. I love how awkward Cam initially is with Mari. This strong and confident male is brought to his knees by an unassuming and frightened woman, which makes him a little less intimidating and even more appealing in Mari’s eyes. Cam is smitten with Mari from the start. He admires her strength, resilience, and bravery, and he finds her charming and beautiful. Here’s Cam in one of my favorite swoon-worthy lines:
"He swallowed and managed to nod, thinking he’d gladly give her his last morsel and waste away into dust if she asked it of him."
I just love the way Cam feels about Mari! However, Mari and Cam both resist their feelings. Cam’s recollections of the past and his mother’s grief over losing her War Chief husband, and Mari’s abuse at the hands of her first husband make both of these characters afraid to love.
Another fantastic aspect of the story is the character’s reverence for books and the written word. As Mari and Cam get to know each other, they use writing as a way to express feelings that prove too difficult to say out loud. When Mari is separated from her sister, they also write to each other, as do other characters in the story. The use of letters throughout the novel adds to the character development and plot progression and appeals to the book lover and writer in me.
Her Accidental Highlander Husband is a great story for readers who like steamy historical romances with well-developed characters and an interesting story-line. Though it is the second book in the series, it can easily be read as a standalone. Thanks so much to Netgalley and Entangled Publishing for a copy of the book in exchange for my honest review.
This was a fun, steamy, and sweet romance. I haven’t read this author before, nor do I read a lot of Scottish romance, but I love the marriage of convenience (especially when it’s instant) trope and this did it justice. Thanks to the author, HFVBT, publisher, and NetGalley for giving me a copy in exchange for my honest review. The full review will be at https://bitchbookshelf.com on October 15.
An emotional roller coaster of a story that will make you laugh as well as cry. Mari kills hers husband after five years of emotional and physical abuse. She escapes to Scotland where she runs into Cam who rescues and marries her. This is a great story as it shows the strength of family and love and how it can help a person heal no matter the damage. Cam gives Mari the time and the space she needs to heal and grow. By doing so she is able to heal others around her. This is really a wonderful story filled with passion and love.
Cameron MacKinlay certainly did not come up short here, my fellow Scottish romance book loving friends. And I’m not just talking about his mountain of manly muscle build and his well earned beast of a warrior’s heart on the battlefield reputation. When it came to clan, family, and helping the defenseless, he was also an alpha protective, gentle giant who would tear anyone limb from limb who threatened them. You might say his only flaw was his at first determined stance never to love knucleheadedness. Even that though was done with well meaning but misguided intentions.
Marian had made one heck of an unavoidable mess when she finally had no choice but to fight back against her abusive duke of a husband. Patience and resourcefulness got her into Cameron’s arms and heart, but it was her own courage that would truly determine their fate.
I honestly don’t want to give anything away here, so my review will have to be brief. Just know that I did enjoy meeting and spending time with this main couple and the supporting cast of characters. It was a surprisingly romantic, sweet, emotional read, especially near the verra end. Make no mistake though, there are plenty of graphic smexy scenes after they get to know and trust one another. Sir Galahad had nothing over this handsome Scottish type knight in shining armor. Joan of Arc would have been proud of Lady Mairen, as well.

Marian and Cameron were married the minute they meet each other...literally. Cameron never wanted to get married because of his status/job as war chief. Marian didn't want to get married after her first arsehole of a husband. Fate had other plans. They fell in love, though neither one would say it or admit it. The law finally caught up with her and it looks like all hope is lost. Make sure you have a box (or two) of Kleenex handy.
It sounds like there is a previous book with her sister and the Laird, but I can't find it. The next one is gonna be good too.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This book has two of my favorite tropes: marriage of convenience and friends-to-lovers. The overall story is great and the author really knows how to evoke emotions from the readers with hard-hitting dialogues from the characters. The beginning and ending parts are so engaging and fast-paced while the middle parts are tame and quiet. I really rooted for Mari and Cam, as partners and as individuals by their own. I liked both of their characterization and really felt their humanity. I commend the author for being able to write realistic characters that struggles, made mistakes, and act as a real human being.
The only critique I have for this book is that the transition to different scenes in a chapter is so abrupt and anticlimactic. It's so obvious and not great in my opinion. There are also a lot of chapters were thoughts/phrases are being repeatedly stated over and over again. I mean, I understand Mari's situation and her cautious nature because of the trauma she had experienced and she always reminds herself that she's safe now and there's nothing to worry about. But, I think there are better ways to show that in the story and not just repeat the same exact words/sentences from chapter to chapter. Nonetheless, the story is still good and I don't think the flaws in the writing lessen the quality of the overall story.
The ending is also great and realistic, it made me cry. I legit don't know if I want this book to have a happy ever after or a bittersweet or a straight tragic ending. I low-key want this to end on either a bittersweet or tragic note, since I've never read a historical romance book having a not happy ending, and I think there's a good reason for the characters to have a bittersweet one. This is the first book that even though the ending isn't my choice of ending if I were to write the book, it still gives me satisfaction and made me happy.
Overall, the story is great. The characters are relatable and worth rooting for. The last few chapters are phenomenal, and evokes all the tears and emotions inside you. The writing is simple and nothing special. The cover has a calm and pleasing allure to the eyes, too bad there's no Mari in there. But still, totally worth it and five out of five stars! And I would definitely read more from this author. Highly recommended!
my personal markers for a great read...1. smart and engaging writing, 2. Humorous, 3. sexy interactions and 4. stories with family/friends.
The development and interest in main characters (cam/Mari) and secondary characters was enjoyable; loved her sister (Kenna). I really did like the H/H for this book; very well paired as a couple.
I loved the writing around the women empowerment (it wasn’t over the top for me). Badass women rock.
writing style is easy to follow, humorous moments, the give and take dialogue enjoyable. Mixing of Modern and Scottish written dialogue.
Action filled, family centred, traumatic events (no great detail in writing however it does help the reader with the personalities of the H/H) and relationship timeline takes place over 12-16 month period (it dragged on a bit for my enjoyment).
I’m not a huge fan of ‘internal dialogue’ or scenery writing in books. I can only take so much before I start skimming through pages and I found myself doing that with this book.
Romantic/sexual content (kissing, oral, love making scenes) was throughout the book. Nothing over the top; again nicely intertwined in the story. There are a few detailed written scenes and several just mentioning the act. 2.5/5 hotness and steam.
I love series around family members or a group of friends. I love the series even more when the author intertwines those characters throughout the book series (it’s a pet peeve when authors don’t do that because what’s the point of the series and introducing the characters if they are not going to interact throughout the series). Hopefully the series will include past characters.
recommend author.
Will read the next book by the author as the secondary characters peek my reading interest.
It’s more of 3.5 stars for me personally but I believe most people will enjoy the story and rate it 4/5.

Her Accidental Highland Husband by Allison B. Hanson Clan MacKinlay #1
Kill or be killed That was her choice Kill him she did and then She ran for her life.
Dogs on her heels Men on horses She ran and breathless She saw a braw man.
Climbing him like a tree She whispered in his ear Would he save her Or turn her away.
A pursuer asked her a question He asked her again The braw man and she answered And the words spoken changed their lives forever.
This was a wonderful book! The introduction captured my attention and the way Cam and Mari met was perfection. I loved it from beginning to end!
What I liked: * Mari: raised to make the perfect match, obedient, abused by her husband, fearful but stronger than she knew. I really liked her character. * Cam: a man that avoided love and marriage, a devoted friend, humorous, intelligent, a man who loved deeply once he fell. He was a man I admired. * Kenna and Lachlan: sister and brother-in-law to Mari, truly in love with one another, put the clan first though it wasn’t always easy. * The Dowager Duchess of Endsmere: a curmudgeonly old woman guarding her heart, suffered a loss long ago, and has secrets that might save a life * The whole story…the highs and lows, happy times and sad one, all of it from beginning to end!
What I did not like: * That women were considered no better than possessions to be treated as the men in their lives chose * The laws of the times
Did I like this book? Definitely Would I read more in this series? As soon as possible!
Thank you to NetGalley and Entangled Publishing-Amara for the ARC – This is my honest review.
So, I haven't read a highlander novel in quite some time. Always a historical romance reader, lately I've been reading more contemporary sports romances and mafia stuff, but have returned to some historical reads trying to balance a variety of genres and authors.
While I liked this book well enough, there wasn't anything that made it amazing for me. It was an easy read and I moved through the story quickly, but yeah...not much wow factor.
The story features Marian a Duchess who is running after just murdering her abusive husband. TW for abuse by the way. There are flashbacks and comments throughout the story. Nothing terribly graphic, but it's part of the plot of the story. Anyway, she's fleeing England and heading back to Scotland to find her younger sister's clan to find refuge from a trial of murder. As she's running onto sister's land, a War Chief named Cameron is out picking rocks near the woods. She runs to him and quickly hand fasts herself to him and they're now married. When the English raiders catch up her new husband stands up for her and takes her back to the castle. She's reunited with her sister and now has to navigate life again as a Scot and as a new wife to this war chief.
The story is mostly about them falling for each other, Mari gaining her confidence back after being in an abusive relationship, and waiting for the English to come get her and hang her for murder.
The story was sweet and the characters decent enough, there just wasn't much more to the story than that. I don't like books that are overly angsty but, this one needed a bit more drama to it. If you're looking for something light and cute though, this is it!
Her Accidental Highland Husband Rating: 4 ⭐️ Thank you to the publisher for the ARC given through NetGalley for review. All opinions are my own.
This is the first book I read by this author and I truly enjoyed it. Marian is on the run from murdering her very abusive husband who happened to be a Duke. It’s not until the law gets very close to her that she pretended to be married to Cam, which turns out that they are now married due to Scotland law. Cam then returns home with a wife in tow. This book deals with the very difficult subject of physical and mental abuse. Due to those years of abuse caused by her husband, Mari is now dealing with the aftermath, but sweet Cameron was the best thing that could ever happened to her. He was a big, intimidating man but he had the biggest...heart! He was very patient with her and treated her gently. He thought that he would never fall in love but Mari broke through those walls and made him realize that there’s always room for love.
4.5 stars This story moved along at a good pace and the characters were very likeable. Marian (Mari) has suffered an horrendous marriage and was now escaping to her sister in the Highlands. Her accidental husband is Cam, the war chief of the MacKinlays. Cam didn’t want to marry because of his own past experiences. However, he is an honourable and caring man. I liked the way he was very patient with Mari’s fears. The author created a feeling of tension through out the book as Mari waited for her past to catch up with her. Mari was a brave lady inspite of her fears. There are some dangerous events and oh my! some heartfelt moments, particularly towards the end. This was an engaging story that I enjoyed very much. I received a copy and have voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Her Accidental Highlander Husband by Allison B. Hanson is an exceptionally well written tale. The storyline will grab you from the start and hold you in awe. The characters are engaging, charming and realistic. An emotional rollercoaster that will make you cry, laugh, and so many other emotions as you watch Marian and Cam’s story, come to life. While part of a series, "MacKinley Clan."I feel it can be read as a stand alone. An interesting and unpredictable story of love, danger, and so much more. An enjoyable and satisfying read. #NetGalley, #HerAccidentalHighlanderHusband, #AllisonBHanson, #EntangledAmara

2.5 ⭐️ I’m all about free (Audible Plus) historical romances and the Scottish/regency era genre got me back into reading 15 years ago, so there’s always an element of it being a cozy read.
However…
The character/plot development was so inconsistent. It seemed decent in the beginning, but by the end of the story major events were described in a sentence. The plot was predictable. The dialogue between characters seemed inappropriate sometimes given the circumstances (I.e. the maid said the FMC looked happy now that she was with the MMC….but the FMC was under house arrest and awaiting the trial to call for her death…? I’d look more stressed than happy 😅).
The opening scene is so good! Immediately I was in and a few pages later when she meets her accidental husband solidified it. I could not put this down and before I knew it it was over. We get to see Mari and Cam fall in love and later deal with the consequences of killing the Duke. That part left me feeling like they weren't going to get their HEA.
Marian Fletcher Blackley, Duchess of Endsmere, flees London after killing her husband in self-defense. The only safe place is can run to, the MacKinlay clan in Scotland, where her sister is the laird's wife.
War Chief Cameron MacKinlayhas vowed to never marry. His lands and his clan are enough for a happy life. While out on the lands he sees a dishevelled lass comes running out of the forest chased by hounds and an English bounty hunter. He feels an overwhelming need to protect her, claims she is his wife and now they're married.
Now, he'll do anything to protect her.
Thanks so much to Entangled Publishing and NetGalley for this ARC.
Wow! That is all I can say after finishing this read. It starts off heavy and ends heavy, but in a good way. Mari is forced to make a hard decision and then run for her life. She ends up in the arms, literally, of a highland war chief who, luckily, goes along with her story of being his wife. Little did either know that their conversation was legally binding in Scotland.
As two people who never wanted a spouse (or another spouse in Marian's case) are forced to forge a new life together, they come to care for each other. Everyone knows that the English will not stop looking for Mar though, so dreams and hopes are soon shattered.
****Potential spoilers***** The multiude of emotions that I felt during Mari's confinement were sometimes overwhelming. The author was able to bring such emotion to this part of the story that I was not sure we were even going to get a HEA (we do though no worries!!) BUT WHAT A RIDE. From the England to Scotland and back it was such a journey.
I liked this book and the story. I felt like the end took longer than it needed to establish the point it was making. Over all I enjoyed seeing the Hero and Heroine work together as a couple.
Hello and welcome to another meeting of the Review Club. And what’s the first rule of the Review Club?
*nods*
That is correct! *points finger*
What’s said within these reviews stays within these reviews!
In other words when Laura (i.e. moi!) gets overly emosh and gushy - You. Do. Not. Repeat. It!
Are we all agreed?
Because it’s just us, can I make a confession? Well, as you all know by now, I have a bit of an historical-romance-fiction-addiction going on. Yet, I generally steer clear of Scottish ones. “Why?”, you may ask. Well, this Scots girl has a bit of an aversion to the overabundance of doonas and kens that can be found in some historical stories.
I’m happy to report that there wasn’t a doona in sight, and although there was a sprinkling of kens, I was so absorbed in the story that I didn’t give them a second thought!
After living the last few years in her own personal hell, I loved watching Marian learn to live, love, and above all, trust once again. (*whispers* She didn’t hit the Duke hard enough in my opinion.)
A wife was never in Cameron’s plans. As the war chief for the Clan MacKinlay, he is a man laden with responsibilities and knows better than most how quickly a life can be cut short. Why risk your heart under such circumstances?
I’ve got one word for Cam - swoon! He may give off an air of ‘Don’t mess with me!’ but he is one rugged, gorgeous, gentle, caring specimen of man-mountain-deliciousness. Come on, can you imagine having that rumbling brogue whispering all sorts of naughty delights in your ear?...
Right? Hot AF!
*coughs*
Where was I?
Ah...
My heart was in my mouth towards the end of the story worrying if it was all going to work out. Honestly, I was doing my best Braveheart impersonation, ranting about those blasted English, and shouting ‘Freedom’ at the top of my lungs! Okay, I admit that my words were a bit bluer *shrugs*. I got caught up - it happens *blushes*.
This book was everything I love about historical romance. Cam and Mari’s story is full of drama, suspense, intrigue, passion, and love.
In short, I can’t wait for the next in the series!
4.5 stars. Her Accidental Highlander Husband was a very sweet, romantic tale. After years of abuse, Marian breaks and kills her husband who is an English duke. She escapes to Scotland and is being hunted by the crown. She just makes it to her sister's husband's land and launches herself at a man she sees in the field.
Cameron MacKinley is working in the field when a woman running away from a pack of soldiers and dogs leaps into his arms. What's he to do? Claims she is his wife and by Scotts law they are now married. But Cameron never wanted a wife or a family of his own. Marian certainly never wanted to remarry. But they are stuck with each other now.
Cameron and Marian's love story is very sweet. She has been terribly abused and he is so patient and loving with her. They hide their feelings, but their chemistry is clear for all in their clan to see. Marian knows these days won't last - she is wanted for murder in England. How will they stay together when Marian's past catches up with them?
Very good book - I really enjoyed Cam and Marian's tale. There were love scenes but not erotic - they could have used more heat.
I received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
