Nighthawk – Lee Williams
The author was a special agent with the criminal investigation division of the Internal Revenue Service. That his writing rings with authenticity should come as no surprise. But what is surprising is the writer’s ability to tell a fast-paced story with a real feel for character development. The story starts with a tragic incident when Agent Gloria Nighthawk and her lover, James Abbott, are attacked on the way home from Iraq, leaving Abbott dead. The incident leaves Nighthawk tortured by questions: why the attack? Was her lover involved in illegal activities? Back home, she tries to return to her family and her work, only to find her husband involved in a case she is investigating. Relationship problems develop not only with her spouse but with her teen children. And then she is contacted by someone in Iraq offering information on financial cover-ups on an international scandal that may have involved her murdered lover. Nighthawk is put in the near impossible situation of resolving both investigations, in Iraq and in Chicago, while attempting to salvage her relationship with her children. There is a new crisis at every turn. We care deeply for Gloria, and trust that somehow she will find her way. The dialog is exceptional, the characters compelling, and the action real. A must read!
