The old breed: A history of the First Marine Division in World War II / by George McMillan

Rate this book
The Old Breed is considered one of the finest division histories ever produced for an American unit. Comprehensive in its coverage, the history traces the First Marine Division from its activations in February 1941 through training in the U.S. to initial combat on Guadalcanal. After a lengthy account of savage fighting on Guadalcanal, the book covers Cape Gloucester (New Britain), Peleliu, Okinawa and, finally, duty in North China.

I have read this book many times and will read it every couple years until I am gone. It was my grandfather's book and is special to me because he served as a scout/sniper (1st Marine Division Recon Company) during WWII (Pelilieu & Okinawa). The book lets me understand more of what he went through and how it shaped him each time I read it.

The book itself is well written and moves quickly but it is factually accurate and detailed enough for a history buff. The combat photos are mesmerizing and the interspersing of illustration is very good. I also appreciate the section highlighting the Division's Medal of Honor winners. It is a humbling book that makes me glad men like this were and are looking out for me.

I probably rate this higher than some others would because of my personal connection to the subject, but not by much.

The best unit history on the market. It gives the complete and storied history of the 1st Marine Division from their training in a brand new camp we now call Camp Lejeune through the Battle for Okinawa. Highly detailed and inspirational.
