Erin Hunter is inspired by a love of cats and a fascination with the ferocity of the natural world. As well as having a great respect for nature in all its forms, Erin enjoys creating rich mythical explanations for animal behavior, shaped by her interest in astronomy and standing stones.
This German exclusive Warriors novella collection contains three previous published novellas: Thunderstar’s Echo, Goosefeather’s Curse, and Pinestar’s Choice. I come to an average rating of 3.5 stars; surprisingly, none of the stories was really bad and they all centred around interesting characters.
Thunderstar’s Echo: ★★★ I always love to read more of Dawn of the Clans and especially Thunderstar. This novella is quite character driven: Thunderstar is struggling because he realizes that he’s responsible for his whole Clan and needs to protect them but he’s not always able to and not if he can do it. The plot that was there was not very great and included the typical elements I don’t like in Warriors books: retelling of events from past books, random uncreative animal attacks, and a birthing scene. There was one scene that stood out for me, namely when .
Out of all other characters, I especially love Lighting Tail . But there are other characters that aren’t as great, like Violet Dawn whose only character trait is to be beautiful or Skystar who’s still an idiot, no surprises here.
Goosefeather’s Curse:: ★★★.5 I don’t know why I should honestly care for Goosefeather and if anyone asked for a novella about him, but here we go. Goosefeather has it really hard in life: He can look into the future and see the fates of cats but can’t change them and can only watch, he became a medicine cat against his will (haven’t seen this trope before lmao) and gets bullied and treated unfairly because he’s different than other cats.
Again, we have some random animal attack and a birthing scene. Also, the timeline just makes no sense. Barely any times has passed since Mapleshade’s Vengeance but Bluestar was already born; I always thought the events around Mapleshade happened longer ago, but oh well. I also find it weird that .
Pinestar’s Choice: ★★★★ This was my favorite novella of this collection. I just loved to see a different perspective on kittypets and twolegs which does not just discredit them as stupid but shows them in a positive light. The focus is on Pinestar, the famous ThunderClan that leaves his Clan and his son Tigerkit to live his last life as a kittypet. Since he was an apprentice, he went to visit the kittypets and asked them for advice – and Jake is one of them, my boy. Through this, he evaluates many things that are normal for Clan cats, like living with borders. In the end, .
But also with this novella, I have some critique. Two are personal nature insofar that I neither like this time of ThunderClan nor stories starting with the protagonist of an apprentice. My other two were with the writing. First, we have much retelling from other events of the book and second, there’s this deterministic trope that Tigerstar is evil since birth which I just don’t like, and which sends some weird messages. Other than this, it was an enjoyable novella.
I used to read the series as a kid, and sometimes I still do now. The older I get, the more I'm wondering if those are really children's books... So many death and sadness. I still love to read the books but I'm 25 and crying about goosefeather, a character I didn't even cared about prior to this novel. It's the same scheme as the previous books and also feels the same.
