Shades of good are colored by the poison of greed, lust, and envy, and all too often the warm colors of humanity are consumed by evil.
The assassin known as Smoke had his future planned. When his partner’s life imploded, his absence left Smoke adrift. Then Guardian threw a sassy, enticing anchor at him. When the alluring siren boarded his ship, he should have seen the rocky shore in the distance. She was irresistible and he was twenty years her senior. Anything but a professional relationship with her was a shipwreck waiting to happen.
The operative known only as Charley dove headfirst into a chance of a lifetime. Her temporary partner radiated a magnetic personality, sexy smile, gorgeous body and they formed an easy comradery, but she could sense darkness below the shiny veneer. She wanted more than a working relationship with this man, and she let him know in no uncertain terms the attraction would come with no strings attached.
Unfortunately, the complication of a relationship was the one thing Charley couldn’t afford. A foreboding cloud draped her future, bringing a deluge she’d managed to outrun and outmaneuver… or so she thought.
When you exist within the shadows, nothing is as it seems.
USA Today and Amazon Bestselling Author, Kris Michaels is the alter ego of a happily married wife and mother. She writes romance, usually with characters from military and law enforcement backgrounds.
Kris was born and raised in South Dakota. She graduated many years ago from a high school class consisting of 13 students (yes that is thirteen, eleven girls and two boys...lucky boys). She joined the military, met her husband, and traveled the world. Today she lives on the Gulf Coast and writes full time.
Kris is an avid people watcher and dreamer. The stories she writes are crafted around the hopes and dreams of a true romantic. She believes love is essential, people are beautiful, and everyone deserves a happy ending.
When she isn't writing Kris enjoys a full life revolving around family, friends, laughing, whiskey, and cold red wine. (Yes cold...don't judge.)
Another great book in the series the really moves both the Shadows, the Guardians and the main story along. Smoke has been doing a great job in support on a number of the other books. Also be and Charlie have been around each other for a while now.
I do think that this is more Charlie's book, as a number of things about Smoke are still unresolved. Though this just gives me more hope to see more of these two especially in the future books. I am very glad that Smoke was acknowledged for what he means to the Guardian universe.
The revelation was not really a surprise but I think the biggest strength of this book are the changes that are going to come from it. I am guessing the are going to be some more main characters showing up,and well as changes to the company itself. The next generation look bright.
Honestly it was a little boring. I just wasn't feeling it. I think their time stuck together on the boat is what did not work for me. Outside of there there was a lot of action and the big reveal on who Charlie really was. It might be a 3.5. It just wasn't as awesome a connection between the MCs as we felt in the original series.
What do you say when the book is that good. I was sucked in from the very first page. The chemistry between Charley and Smoke was an inferno. They were fantastic together and I loved the other members of Guardian involved as well. Smoke has bumped my favorite Kris Michaels book Jacob to the #2 spot and Smoke is now my #1 Favorite. That was huge to me because Jacob is where I fell in love with the Guardians. This series keeps getting better and better. Kris Michaels you need to start writing faster so we can read more. You have some hungry reads wanting more books!!! Definitely on my 1 click buy list for all her books.
4.5 Stars! OH MY!!! The twist/secret in this story was brilliant, fans of the Kings of Guardian (original series) will love this story! We meet new characters, the Kings & Guardian personnel are involved throughout the story, the banter we’ve come to love is there, Smoke and Charley are hot and intense at times. I Loved it!! Long may Guardian continue!
OMG! Another FANTASTIC story by Kris! This story is about Dan and Charley. There was a lot of cloaking going on around Charley as to who she really was. Smoke was dismayed that he had to babysit Charley in the beginning but soon couldn't resist her. Charley was secretive about her life but she was falling for Smoke. She sure does get into a lot of trouble. She says trouble always seems to find her. As the mission gets more intense, these two finally found their love for each other. I am happy these two are working on their happily ever after! FANTASTIC job Kris! Can't wait for Reaper's story!
There's going to be a great big showdown between good and evil. Smoke has been tasked with teaching Charley how things go boom! Along the way things heat up when Guardian finds out that someone in their past has gone to work with the enemy. If you have been following all the different Guardian series things are getting intense. I need to catch up with a couple other books so I can be ready for the newest versions to be published.
I enjoyed reading the storyline for Smoke aka Dan Collin's a Guardian mentioned in previous books. Smoke is someone who cares about those he works with & is such a humorous character & also a twin to his celebrity brother. His mysterious new partner Charley who since boarding his yacht turned his world upside down since his other partner Sage took a leave of absence from Guardian to take care of his parents. I sure hope Kris gets to tell his story too.
Smoke took Charley under his wing and taught her everything he knew about becoming a dive master, to learning all about explosives & blowing things up which was his craft. He kept her at arms length because not only did he feel like she was too young but she was someone important to the organization and even thought she was apart of the King family lol. The chemistry between Smoke & Charley was explosive once he stopped running away & admitted his attraction to her too.
They was sent out on a surveillance mission to just get pictures of a target & the action packed storyline from there along with lots of laughter, tears, guessing who Charley really is was so worth the lack of sleep I got again last night not wanting to put this book down to sleep. I stayed up all night thru this morning to finding the answer to who Charley really was and OMG I had a gone through all the previous main characters & was shocked I figured it out towards the end when she blew up at Jason on the phone when he tried to sideline her & she agreed to quit if he let her stay to finish the mission and get her revenge. Both Smoke & Charley are so alike because they both lost it when they believed the other was killed & let's just saw a lot of bad guys died by them both! And they both survived, I'm sooooo excited to know what role they both will play in Guardian's future, praying Sage is returning, & more characters mentioned will have their story told too in future books because I know there is more to be told & I am thanking God for my husband getting me my kindle & kindle unlimited to be able to buy your books as well as read those I have yet to buy.
And lastly I must say that cliff hanger on Reaper at the end was such a shocker & great book teaser to his story I hope to read soon! Kudos again on a great book Kris Michael's!
When you read a book that you really, really enjoy you sometimes wonder what the next book will be like because surely they can't get any better than the one you've just read?
Wrong!
I just spent about five hours reading this book because I could not put it down. Even bathroom breaks were difficult as I couldn't take my kindle with me because it was charging up. Suffice to say they were very quick breaks!
This book had so much contained in a nice little package - great characters, intriguing storyline with questions that kept popping up (some answered, some teasers for future books to answer), lots of action and just not in the bedroom and some brilliant scenes of humour. The conversation about Charley's new nickname had me laughing out loud (good thing I live alone). Not to mention the end scene where several pertinent questions were answered in the final pages - questions the author had been very tight lipped on and driving everyone crazy with the need to know answers.
Kris Michaels is the queen of hooking her readers in with the way she drops subtle clues, some true some decoys, throughout her stories making it a compulsion to keep turning the page. And when you finally get your answers there are even more questions because there's a delicate little teaser to hook you into the next book and have you rushing to press the preorder button on your amazon account.
Oh, well, I guess I'll have to find something else to read while the calendar ticks down to the next release in this amazing Guardian World.
3.8 This is the fourth book I read from the author. The author is good with the plots she write but most of the time she failed with the romance. The only book that seems that the H has a genuine caring for the heroine besides lust was Centurion's even that book the H needed time to truly love the heroine. I hate that in all kinds of books the Heroes always easily loved the OWs unconditionally while they needed to know the heroine and see if they are worth to giving their love while the heroine give to them easily. In this book I see that the heroine he lusted gives him the same sexual excitment that he had with this past women or men but I don't see true feelings. When he caught her in a fight at the bar, he had her six but he did seem to be bothered that the heroine was battered nor he seems protective of her, she is just a partner to watch her back. I think his former partner is more important than the heroine. And another thing that bothered me was I don't think that Gabriel care enough to be worried in the dangers that his daughter was at. Nor for his wife in the past before marrying her, he showed more caring and worrying for the victim in Gabriel's book than for his wife and children. I'm tired that the heroines always has her hormones rule them, to them love/desire it's the same fir the H while for the H is always lust the same way they lust after other OWs. And I hated that when the heroines had lukewarm sex with the OMs before while the Hs always have pleasure or mind-blowing sex with the OWs.
OK, what can I say that hasn't been said before? Kris Michaels always writes an excellent story. Smoke and Charley are a fabulous addition to the Shadow/Guardian family, especially Charley.
Charley's mysterious past will keep new readers guessing but those who have read the first 22 Guardians (Kings, Defenders, and Shadows) will know who she is. Smoke's past and present bring some angst to his story, especially concerning Sage (he needs to come back and get his own story). More of the second generation of Shadows are introduced (Phoenix is standing out as my favorite, so far) and they are just as interesting as the first generation and their assignment of a codename for Charley is adorable. Between the action scenes, there is plenty of time for conversations between the characters giving us more insight into their personalities. Of course, no Guardian is ever alone anymore, so there are several guest appearances from familiar faces including a man that really does know everything about Guardian (abso-freaking-lutely loved his cameo).
Overall, fast paced, well written, great characters (both new and old), and most of all, keeps your attention through the whole story. You don't have to read all the books before this one but to get the background and understand all of the players - you should start at the beginning and work your way to Smoke.
Smoke is the sixth instalment in the Guardian Security: Shadow World series by Kris Michaels. I couldn't wait to dive into this series - binging my way through this thrilling blend of high-stakes suspense, military precision, and emotional romance. This series is a spin-off from her Kings of Guardian universe, and dives into the covert, dangerous, and morally complex missions of elite operatives working in the shadows where the stakes are high, loyalty is tested, danger is constant, and love often comes at the highest cost. Each book focuses on a different operative, giving us a fresh perspective each time, while also weaving in an overarching sense of camaraderie and found family. The characters are layered - hardened by their pasts and yet still vulnerable in ways that make them relatable. I recommend reading the series from the beginning, reading each book in sequential order for you to be able to fully appreciate the interconnected relationships and evolving team dynamics. Ms. Michaels doesn’t shy away from the darker realities of covert work, but she also infuses hope, resilience, and the healing power of love into her storylines. So, if you enjoy romantic suspense with military and intelligence intrigue, then you will want to dive into this world and experience all the action, passion, and edge of your seat missions for yourself. Happy Reading…
Smoke has been given more than he can handle on his latest mission, almost four months at sea with the gorgeous, sassy, smart, fearless Charley was sending him insane. He is determined to keep his hands, and mouth, to himself. She is far too young for him, too innocent, too good, too everything. He has totally underestimated her... Charley is used to fighting for what she wants, and not only does she want the training but she also wants Smoke....she has never failed yet, however he is proving to be a challenge. This will not be her first failure, he and his heart will be hers, at least until her future is taken from her..... They both have secrets, they are both running from who they are. But together they find acceptance, for the first time, someone who loves them for them, not who or what they are. This is a tough one for the Guardians, Charley almost pushes them to breaking point, but it is an awesome book and when we finally find out all her secrets...woah! Not what I was expecting...or what Smoke was expecting....obviously!
Smoke had been introduced in other books and also played a part in one of the Silver Seal ones. After his orginal partner had to leave Guardian, Smoke was paired with a sassy, obsinate, bossy girl 20 years his junior. Charley is a freshly trained operative with a mysterious background. Lots of guessing who she is but not revealed until the end. She is likeable, still often too impulsive and with a history of acting first, thinking later.
Smoke brings her to scratch and a originally boring babysitting mission turns interesting and dangerous. There is a good mix of action and banter, two more Shadows bring the group feeling I love, compared to the earlier Shadow books where the hero always acted alone. The Kings are never more than a phonecall away .
The author deals with Smoke's baggage well, compared to other Shadows, his history is an open book which I find easier to understand.
Negative is the age gap, Charley is just often too immature. Yes, she brings Smoke to life but I just can't shake a feeling that she knows she would fall on her feet even if she would screw up. Making her 5 years older would have helped for a more believable relationship.
yay, yay and triple yay. smoke was released....thanks audible. only thing is that I have to rack my brain for the previous book to rememberthe details that connect this one. I so loved the plot and a "new" character. kris your knowledge of how black ops, tech, computers and whatever you delve into, is staggering . I so love the Intrigue and action. the love and emotion with this book was quicker than I thought and this depth of plotline and character kinda reminded me of Lycos and asp books. Which I must say were action packed but a bit flat on the characters...a lot of time lapsed on the ship that wasn't written into the story so the attraction delta but instalust/love however, the mystery of who our heroine was kept me in suspense till about 3/4s through the book then I twigged..oh so clever...loved it. hoping we see more of sage one day. I'm still holding onto my 1st place of all time..Joseph and Tempest runs in 2nd. Matt Haynes thankyou again for your awesome narration. so waiting for reaper, thankyou for my wonderful world of guardians their women and their family as with shadow world, their family and their women too.
Smoke has been an interesting character to me since he was first introduced and well I was anxious to hear his story. When we last left him, his partner Sage had left to sort family business and he was now partnered with 22-year-old Charley. Honestly, I wasn't sure how this would work with 20 years separating them but Ms. Michaels wrote it perfectly. Charley and Smoke both have secrets and they needed to learn to trust each other. That came slowly but it did come and in the end, we found out who Charley is and why she kept secrets. Ms. Micheals kept the action coming and the heat intense as the story unfolded. We met Reaper and Pheonix and well both are as interesting as her other assassins but they just something about Phonix that is perhaps a bit wilder than the rest. This story was hard to put down as always. I suspect we will see Sage again and will find out that a new threat is laid upon the Kings' doorstep. There is never a dull moment in that family and I wouldn't have it any other way!
This book, like the previous 5 in the series, was exciting and fast-paced. I couldn’t give it 5 stars, though. Things just got too confusing. The relationship between Smoke and Charley was clear, as was the inclusion of Reaper and Phoenix in furthering the plot. The really fuzzy part, at least to me, was the involvement of highest level Guardian characters. Who are these people?
Clearly, they are family to Charley. But I felt like there is a whole other series that might explain what their roles are in the Shadow world. Well, duh, I know there is—Michael’s has written several series using this world. It would be nice to have a preface or something to explain the overlapping characters and where to read about them. It’s especially confusing when I see that the author is continuing to publish new books in the other series as I am mid-way through reading this series.
I wish Michael’s would give a backstory to the entire Guardian organization. Things are now (in this book) getting too confusing.
This is book six in the Guardian Security series. This book is chaotic in all the good ways. I did ask myself several times, what are they doing and why aren’t they more protected? This book begins with Smoke on his ship alone. His partner Sage was called away. Out of the blue, an operative comes aboard. Smoke called this person out of the shadows, but she, Charley, explained why she was there. Smoke was not happy about this new assignment, but reluctantly agreed to do it. Charley brought chaos to all things, but she was beautiful, inside and out, clever, and determined. Please mind your triggers because there are character’s histories that are revealed in this book that show the awful darkness and danger in trafficking and violence. Let’s say the Smoke, Charley, Reaper, and Phoenix make a great team. It was good to have the old and new characters in the mix too. There is a happy ending for our couple but a sad epilogue for the next book with Reaper. Read On.
I loved the book!! Readers will be shocked at Smoke & Charley's story. Both have secrets that they don't want to divulge! Charley has been training for several months but her handlers are holding her back! Smoke has been instructing and "babysitting" Charley who is in his mind too young, a new operative and if he's right, a family member of one of his bosses. In addition, he has been trying to fight his attraction for her every day and she is not making it easy and his willpower is failing. Just when they are assigned an op, they give in to their feelings. Smoke's impairment and Charley's secret unite them as they search for an assassin to eliminate him. This book has danger, suspense, love and a surprise ending!!
I love how Kris Michaels has woven together Guardian and the Shadow World and the new generation of operatives in this book. There will be many more books in these two series. I can't wait!!!
Dan (a/k/a Smoke) reminded me of a big ole teddy bear that you want to hug and snuggle with. Charley reminded me a wild child always up to something and wanting to have fun. They were both vulnerable at times and the connection they shared was intense. He was a little older, but she suffered something terrible as a child that aged her and made her more mature. I liked how no one made Smoke uncomfortable because of his issue, especially Charley.
I figured out Charley’s true identity before the end of the story and I liked the scene between she and her father.
I’m looking forward to reading Reaper’s story next, but hate it wont be released until later this year. I hope Phoenix’s book will be released after that and I’d like an update on Sage also.
I've enjoyed getting to know each of these characters and I like how we always get to see the characters from previous books as well.
Wow! Smoke is a highly trained Shadow operative that has a new partner assigned to him. Enter Charley a much younger and very driven operative that wants to prove her value to Guardian. Charley finds herself attracted to Smoke and gets frustrated as he keeps her at arms length. This two work together and during this time Charley accepts him and helps him to see what kind of person he truly is. They give into their mutual attraction as they take on difficult assignments. Kris Michaels does a great job developing this relationship between a woman who has secrets and a man that needs help overcoming his unknowns. This story is very well written and has a wonderful surprise ending. Great direction for the Shadows of Guardians. I can’t wait to read more!
As usual Kris Michaels introduces you to the characters and then spins her web of intrigue and compassion. I could not put the book down and when a neighbor rings the doorbell I almost didn't answer. Once I got engaged I was hooked and did not want to interrupt my reading. Smoke and Charley came to life for me and I really did not want to leave their world. Michaels characters have depth and real lives and the assassin's have their own family. They take care of one another. They are there for one another and they have ups and downs as most people do. Smokes' life addresses his disability and his abandonment issues. Charley has issues about self love and self care and we find her taking steps to be sure that she never again is a victim. I would recommend this book and all of the Guardian Security Shadow World series.
Yet again Kris Michaels has outdone herself, this time with Smoke!! Smoke is an experienced Shadow operative. His regular partner, Sage, has gone to take care of family issues, so Smoke is dealing with a new partner he isn’t sure he wants. Charley is young, beautiful, sassy, inexperienced, and keeping secrets. Not to mention she’s attracted to him and letting him know. He’s very hesitant because, among other things, she’s young, he knows he looks like his famous brother, he knows she’s keeping secrets, and so is he; and they are supposed to be working. And that’s just the start of things. I literally could not put this book down, I may have growled at my husband when he tried to interrupt to ask a question. Totally a must read, then read again to make sure I didn’t miss anything in my rush to see what happened next!!
I borrowed Smoke ~ Guardian Security Shadow World ~ Book 6, by Kris Michaels from the Kindle Unlimited Program.
Smoke and Charley's story is full of secrets, taking four months to learn to be partners while doing small jobs for Guardian with the minimum of danger. They were assigned to get pictures of a person of interest and Smoke's yatch was blown up, and the action started from then to the end of the plot and it was non-stop in both danger and romance.
In the end Smoke revealed his secret first but Charley admited to loving him before he figured out her secret when he father showed up. The help from fellow team Guardian and two of the other Shadows kept the action and laughs moving and made this a quick read as I couldn't put it down. It seems that each of Kris Michael's books I read gets better with each one.
No plot spoilers No real potential triggers although there is reference to sexual abuse and kidnap. There are some gruesome scenes and graphic violence. As ever Kris Michaels weaves a story that sucks you in and keeps you there, the characterisation is exceptional and it's always good to visit old friends from Guardian. There is a lot of sex in this book, more, I think, than others in the series, and some swearing. To obtain the best read I would recommend starting the series from the beginning. Looking forward to reading Reaper's story, and then I hope we get Sage's book. I am also looking forward to reading Phoenix's book. Ms Michaels best get busy!
I love Smoke the hero who is quiet, effective and unassuming. The plot is dense but becomes a bit lost because of how I perceived Charley. There were too many inconsistencies about her. She was kidnapped, drugged and raped at 14 but is ridiculously tireless in her efforts to sleep with Smoke. She’s only 22 but supposedly has all this spy skill stuff already. She’s impetuous and can’t obey a simple order and is confused when her bosses tell her to stand down. Turns out Daddy is very important so it suddenly becomes very clear why she’s happy to risk everyone’s lives and the mission objective to do things her way. A great series and a potentially good story spoiled by one poor little rich girl. 🤷🏼♀️
Strong heroic lead characters abound in this book. Smoke is a seasoned, loner operative for Guardian Security. He's good at his job. But he has to avoid public exposure, mostly due to his look alike famous actor brother. When he draws young, sassy operative Charley to train aboard his floating home, he also has to avoid her charms and the chemistry between them. She has no interest in avoiding their attraction. They both hide secrets from each other, but that does not stop their relationship. When the mission they draw turns deadly it only increases their importance to each other. Fast paced, intriguing and well plotted this is a novel worth the read.
Each book Kris writes has it’s own, charm, intrigue, surprises, love, revenge, brotherhood, and so much more Charlie is such a stitch. She had a difficult life but wonderful parents. God help any nan that claims her as his. I would like to have had more of her adventures and why she was such a rebel. Smoke had horrible parents, a a horrible childhood at the group home. How could anyone do that to their child.? Charley is assigned to Smoke as his partner. Lot of tension, he not happy she’s there. He missing Sage. As they finally agree to disagree, their whole lives change forever. There is nothing going smoothly about any part of their mission. They both get hurt, both think the other is dead. Once again the assassins work together. Wait until you find out who Charlies father is.
Smoke was such an incredible story! This series is already one of my favorites and Smoke just tops it off.
Smoke is a Shadow for Guardian Security when he gets a new partner he’s forced to reveal parts of himself he keeps hidden. Charley is young and ready for her next adventure, when she gets assigned to Smoke she gets a lot more than expected.
These two characters are something else. They’re perfect, absolutely amazing flaws and all. I enjoyed this book so much that as soon as I finished I immediately started reading it again. Can’t wait for more from Guardian Security Shadow World!!
Wow, what a fantastic story! Smoke has been trying to not let Charley know how much she means to him and she is doing the same. For months Smoke has been training her in explosives and underwater placements. Charley's never told Smoke who she really is. She's afraid he'll leave when he finds out. Smoke is still trying to keep his own secrets. When they're sent out on a mission, it's more dangerous trying to find this man than they first thought. This has been a real page turner that Kris Michaels does with all of her books. I've loved reading this series and I can't wait to read Reaper's story next.
From the very beginning the story doles out every emotion that exists. There's heartbreak of a longstanding relationship dissolving due to outside influences leaving our main male character Smoke feeling unanchore. Charlie's arrival brings us the utter most intense romantic dynamics heat thats bursting with happiness. Kris Micheals never fails to deliver, this is another exceptional quality novel, that has the ability to pull us into the story and keep us there until the very end. I have read this ever evolving series, since the very first novel Jacob, Kings of Guardian's and wait with baited breath for more.
