"This history of the Phillies begins with the club's inception in 1883 and goes through the 2011 season, highlighting the team's finer moments and players but also covering less memorable times. An exploration of the Phillies' relationship with Philadelphia and numerous historic photographs complete this celebration of the oldest continuous one-name, one-city franchise in sports history"--Provided by publisher.

The Philadelphia Phillies The History of the Philadelphia Phillies goes way back. The Phillies have lost more games and finished in last place more times than any other Major League Club. The club started in 1876 and had a losing season, but had some players throughout the years. Some of the player’s names were Grover Cleveland, Steve Carlton, and players today like Chase Utley and Ryan Howard. Finally the Phillies were World Series champions recently in the 2008 season. The author’s purpose is to teach readers that about the history of the Philadelphia Phillies organization and to show that the author cared about the organization because he was the president of the Philadelphia Historical Society. I would recommend this because it shows how a losing organization would have losing seasons throughout the years. The organization stuck together with seventeen owners throughout team history and each owner having different philosophies. Most organizations would of have just went under but the Phillies pulled through by winning the 2008 World Series.
