Highly highly recommend!

These four books were my first taste of Ms. Johnson’s work. And how amazing!

I listened to the audio versions. And later re-read them because they were sooo amazing!

Review per book:

1 Pretty Little Fliers - FUN STORY!!! And WHAT AN AMAZING NARRATOR!!!

First of all: I love the narrator! Very bubbly, young, fitting for the genre! Her narration was top-notch. The voices she had to do, of the different characters, were all very easy to understand. And with all the animals noises she had to make, it was quite the challenge, I can tell you that! She did such a good job, really amazing!

And then the story. How FUN!!! Loved it from the start!!! Jolene can talk with animals. I never knew cockroaches could be so funny lol. And I’m such a softie for a guy who loves his pet! In this case, the police officer who’d do anything for his dog. But the dog doesn’t like shifters… and Jolene used to be one… still is I guess, only without the ability to shift. The case: a woman falls to her death. Jolene’s help is needed as a police consultant, as the only witness is a parakeet. What follows is an unorthodox investigation, to say the least…

What an excellent book! Oh My Goodness, I loved it so so so much!!! I’m really very enthusiastic about it!!! I am so going to read/listen to more books by Ms Johnson!

2 Friday Night Bites - What a joy to listen to!

It immediately starts funny! Oh how I love this lighthearted, fun style! And it sure helps having a fantastic narrator who really brings the story to life. She does the different voices crazy well and they’re still understandable. Doing sound effects that really raised the level to a very high standard and added so much to my enjoyment. But that giant spider oooh uugghhhh lol.

The conversations between Jolene and police dog Daisy continue to be so much fun!
Favorite quote: “Nothing to see here, just a woman and a dog exchanging insults.”

Highly recommend!

3 Game of Bones - Very entertaining

Such a fun story and the narration lifts this story to the next level.

Ooh, Jolene is in a right pickle. At the policeman’s ball there are people from her previous life… who could out her as a lowly shifter… Snakes! This is not going as it should!

A lot is happening, and not all to do with the investigation! Jolene’s life is never boring! And neither is this book. Fast-paced as ever, full of humor and very entertaining. Will Daisy sniff out the truth?

4 Mouse of Cards - How I love love love being back with Jolene!

This book really provides a fun escape in difficult times. And the narrator was awesome. Her ‘woofs’ are so real! The author set the narrator quite a challenge, with some of the voices! But the narrator rose to the challenge and did an awesome job. I highly recommend this book!

Synopsis
Jolene can talk to animals. Handy skill or reason to hide?

A cursed and outted shifter, Jolene needed to find a cover for her ability to talk to animals, and decided on pet psychic. When a murder happens just outside her door - and the same officer who came to her for help with his injured magical dog is investigating - she gets swept up helping to find the murderer.

Can she hide the truth from the truth sniffing Daisy? Will she trust Peter enough to tell him the truth? Is there a way to catch who really killed Bim?

My Thoughts
This was a fun and incredibly cosy mystery. There could have been a little more world building and backstory given, but at under 200 pages I think this was a great overview of the city.

Jolene is written as being depressed and down without it ever being said outright. She's lethargic, unwashed and overall just not that interested in life. The tough situation she's found herself in seemed never ending but it all got better when she decided to help a cop.

There wasn't any gore or overt violence in this, and the majority of crime or darker themes happen off page. This was a light hearted and quirky look into the cosy mystery world.

The magic system does need a little more explanation. This is the first in the series and setting the scene for later books, but I would have enjoyed learning more about it sooner. I'm excited to continue the series and see where it ends up - mostly does Daisy ever warm to Jolene!

What could be better then getting four stories back to back in one fantastic box set? Starts with book one in this magical cozy mystery series where we meet Jolene a shifter that was cursed taking away all of her powers. As a side effect she can now talk to animals though which comes in handy when Officer Flint arrives with his sick dog partner looking for help. This is the start to a fantastic journey between the two of them where she works as a police consultant on some of his cases. Four mysteries in makes for a great start to this fantastic series. A total must read for fans of cozies set in a world of magic, shifters, witches, and so very much more. I totally loved it so I give it 5/5 stars.

I'm so glad that I found this series!
The characters are fun and relatable, and I love that they grow with each and every book. The mysteries contain twists and turns that keep the reader on her toes, and keep her turning the pages. These are well written and entertaining and I look forward to continuing on with the series.

Oh wow!!! I have not known this author to produce a bad book, I don't think she could even if she tried. Each book (in any of her many series) are entertaining, humours, character driven, with funny or quirky sidekicks and above a magical experience you won't want to miss out on and in this box set you get four times the fun.
PRETTY LITTLE FLIERS
In this book it is the dog that says the snarky great one lines and I loved the banter between the dog and the main character. The mystery was good and had a numbers of very plausible suspects. Just loved everything about this book and it is a great book to bring a smile to your face and a good start to the box set..
When Jolene had to give up her career as a lawyer because of a curse she became a pet psychic. It is easier to explain being psychic to her customer than she was a hated shifter and is actually talking to them. However this job doesn't pay much and she is about to get evicted by her land lady. Which explains how gets talked into helping a handsome police officer and his annoying dog, there has been a murder in the building opposite and the only witness is a parakeet. The parakeet unfortunately didn't see anything and the three of them must go against orders and question more suspects to unearth the killer. Jolene needs to solve the case to get paid and pay the rent but the more she investigates the harder it is to keep her secret.
FRIDAY NIGHT BITES
It's good for a laugh and is highly entertaining. I enjoyed the mystery side to the story too and the fact that it kept you guessing as to who the killer was.
Jolene is once again asked by the handsome police man to help consult on one of his cases. A woman has been killed by spider bite and the only witness is a giant spider that is knocking on deaths door, he needs Jolene to find out as much as she can before it is to late. The women owned a sweat shop making clothes and ripped of fashion accessories. A fashion designer also died on the same night, of a heart attack. Could the two death be related? Jolene goes under cover to try and find out the truth and at the same time tries to keep her shifter life a secret. But when you work with a lie sniffing dog some secrets could prove to be to hard to keep, especially if her two worlds collide
GAME OF BONES
The characters are what makes it such a fun and quirky series (and a must listen) and I really like the way the relationship between the two characters is developing and of course the fun with the animals. The mystery was good and I didn't work out who the killer was.
Jolene has trouble saying no to the handsome cop which is why she finds herself attended the policeman ball, the ball her ex co-workers and ex fiance will also be attending. The only good thing is, is it is a masquerade ball and down on her luck pet psychic Jolene looks a lot different now compared to her high powered lawyer suits. Nobody will recognise her, right. If only that was the worst thing she had to worry about. While at the party the officer who is being recognised for his brave work is murdered and Jolene finds herself once again acting as a consultant for the police. She can't possible keep her two worlds apart as she investigates, especially as one of the first people that needs interviewing is her old boss. Torn between helping the handsome cop and keeping her secret Jolene must pull of a miracle, to bad she is the only one in Bejumere that can't use magic
MOUSE OF CARDS
I really loved this book. This is my favourite book in the series so far, although I might have said that about the last but each book gets better and better, so that it is hard to choose. I really love the characters and find each book adds another level to the enjoyment and intrigue that surrounds them. Jolene is a strong independent woman that doesn't need anyone but at the same time longs to be normal and this comes across really well in the story, so much so that you are rooting for it to come out well for her and her friends. I really like the friendship between her and Daisy the Lie detecting dog, one minute they are snipping at each other and then worried the other is okay, also with Peter now knowing one of her secrets it adds another sparkle to the book. The mystery was good and I certainly didn't work out who the murder was.
Jolene is asked to.consult on another one of Peter's case despite there being no animals involved. He does this because he thinks the place the murder happened would be highly interesting to her. It happen in an old museum, one that is currently hosting an exhibition on cursed artefacts. Jolene ever hopeful that she can find a cure for the curse that took her magic and stopped her ability to shift into an owl, jumps at the chance to put a murder behind bars and maybe just maybe find some answers on curses. A lot of people out side the museum are unhappy with the exhibition and a lot of people inside were unhappy with the changes the dead man was making. But are they really a motive to murderer someone? Jolene, Peter and Daisy will have to work together in order to get to the bottom of the murder, as well as work with a new boss. Jolene also has the worried fear over a friends strange behaviour and avoiding the leader of the underground shifters before he can ask her to do something she might regret or damages her friendship with Peter. Of course the big secret she still hides might do that all by its self.
I just love the narrator. In my opinion she is one of the better ones out there. She does amusing voices and even uses different sounds and sound effects to bring the series alive.
I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Fun read

Enjoyed the characters. Each book wraps up it's own plot while allowing for the books to continue and have a common thread. Love her arguing with Daisy

I read each book in this boxset separately but would like to render a review as Erin Johnson has a creative imagination. She has introduced another fun, vivacious series that is an easy read.
This series is known as the Magic Market Mysteries.
There is a variety of unique characters as Officer Peter Flint, Daisy (Flint’s canine partner) and Jolene investigate the murder. There are a variety of suspects, twists, and some unusual information. Daisy and Jolene do not get along which led to some snarky exchanges. Did I mention Daisy is a lie sniffing german shepard.
I am hoping for a step up in life for Jolene. It would be nice not to be hungry, dirty, and living in filth. Maybe in the future she can get some or all of her magic powers back. Learning more of how & why the curse was placed might give us insight into reversing it.
I like Ms. Johnson’s descriptive writing style. You feel as if you are there.
If you’ve read any of the Spells & Caramel Series, we return to a seedier side of Bijou Mer. More of the underbelly of the island, the Darkmoon Market District is where the poor live and criminals conduct business on a day-to-day basis. Also, it is the base of operations for the head mob shifter. Shifter’s still are feared in this community.

Through the four books there are a few deaths, descriptions of the have and have nots, and what drove the murders. Without giving too much away, Jolene and crew investigate the deaths and try to find the guilty parties.

Each book gets better and better.

Series gets better as the pages turn

I almost stopped reading this series as the main character seemed too snarky to like, and I’d read similar plots in other books that I liked better in some ways. The characters seemed shallow at first and needed more depth. However, I finished the four-book set and enjoyed them enough that now I want to get the next books.

The protagonist develops into a more relatable person with vulnerabilities, and her behaviors are explained. The fact that she seldom bathes is a put-off, but the poor hygiene fits into the story later. Her friends are good people, and her evolving enmity with Daisy adds to the overall development of the romance with officer Flint.

This is a slow-burn romance with some murder mysteries to solve along the way, and a larger plot arc that becomes apparent in book three but is unresolved at the end of book four, which all together keep the reader intrigued to continue reading the series.

There is peril, some threats of violence, frequent alcohol/potion consumption, tertiary characters die off-page, and creative expletives. The writing is mostly excellent, but there are several grammar errors with sank/sunk type verbs, missing commas, and misplaced modifiers. None is too distracting.

Overall, reading these books is a pleasant way to spend time, and I would recommend them to older adult females who enjoy mysteries, a bit of paranormal and magical elements, and a bit of romance all mixed together.

Humorous and Fun Series

This is a delightful series. Each book is better than the one before as you get to learn more about the characters. If you enjoyed the Spells and Caramels series, you’ll find this one equally entertaining.

Jolene Hartgrave is in tough straits. A former lawyer, she’s lost her job. And worse, her magic, due to the effects of a curse. She’s trying to make ends meet by pretending to be a pet psychic, but in truth, she’s barely scraping along. When a police officer needs her help, and then offers her a job as a police consultant, she’s can’t say no.

The writing is filled with humor. The underlying theme of this book is about discrimination, for Jolene as a shifter isn’t considered as worthy as others. It’s something that reflects things going on in the real world today. This theme is handled with a light touch, but it’s there. It’s doesn’t diminish the fun of these books.

I loved the narration. The performance is done well and professionally. The characters are distinct and brought to life by Ms. Somerville who has the perfect voice for these books.. My only complaint is that there are a few mispronounced words, but it's easy to ignore them.

I enjoyed listening to this box set, and I highly recommend it. I look forward to the remainder of the books in this series.

I received this audiobook for free from the author. I thank her for her generosity, but it had no effect on this review. All opinions in this review reflect my true and honest reactions to reading this book.

I loved the first book in the Magic Market Series on the island of Bijou Mer where we meet Jolene, a down and out shifter whose been cursed by a former colleague. The curse took away her magic and outed her as an owl shifter. She lost her job as a lawyer, her fiance, and her life as she knew it all in one fell swoop. During a fake reading as an animal psychic and desperate to pay rent to her Dragon landlord in the Dark Moon District, she agrees to help a cop with his K-9 partner. It turns out the curse took everything but gave her the ability to communicate with all animals and insects which she disguises as being psychic. Peter, nice guy that he is, hires her to "read the mind" of a bird witness to a murder across the street. Thus begins Jolene's new job as a police consultant, now if only the shifter community that is described like the mob doesn't find out. The author's vocabulary of (clean) curse words is hilarious. Trust me, you will have shell of a time. The next three books continue with more cases, all of which are great fun! Jolene and Peter get a little closer, too bad she's holding back some pretty big secrets. All of these books are must reads. They are cute and funny with good mysteries. Daisy, Peter's K-9 partner has a lot of great lines sparring with Jolene.

Better than I expected

I was a little leery on whether or not I would like this but surprisingly, I got into it. The whole island of magical beings, separate from normal "humans" with a separate "lower" class of shifters, distrusted for that alone with Jolene stuck in the middle, was a different take on other books with a similar theme. Jolene is unique in that she was cursed and lost her magic but couldn't share that without making herself more vulnerable to everyone. A shifter who can't shift with a wand that is now useless, but a new gift as a side effect that can also not be broadcasted without negative consequences. Barely eking out a living, she meets Peter and finds herself helping him with his cases. But what would happen if he found out who she really is?

Peter is a police officer with a unique partner, Daisy, a canine lie detector. After Daisy gets hit with a curse and dying, he rushed to Jolene's assuming she is a vet. Comes to learn she is pet psychic instead and offers her a consultant fee to help him with his cases. Pretty soon, they are solving multiple murders and growing closer until Jolene confesses all and has to face the consequences of trusting a non-shifter.

Loved it!

I really enjoyed this box set of paranormal mysteries. And I'm glad it was a box set too because they're so short! I wish I could read the next ones but they're a pretty penny, so I'll have to wait on that. Anyways, excellent writing on the author's part, it was all very engaging and interesting and I loved the characters! None of it seemed overly fake or pointless, everything had a purpose and all the characters were well fleshed out. The mysteries were engaging as well and I never knew who the murderer was going to be, so points for not being obvious but giving enough subtle clues that we could theorize. I also liked the paranormal aspects of the story, the magic and shifters were neat to read about and the world building was well done. I wonder where the prejudice against shifters came from though, it was never really explained. It may be from her other series. One last thing is that it had a very Dresden Files vibe to it at the beginning, I would say the beginning was almost identical to the Dresden Files, but maybe that's just common among paranormal murder mysteries, I don't know, I'm new to the genre. Overall, 5 out of 5 stars.

Jolene is a cursed shifter who cannot shift and has no magic, living on a island where everyone else does and shifters are hated. Not a good situation, especially for someone who was once a high flying lawyer and now makes a dubious living as a pet psychic, a side effect of the curse is that she can speak to all animals. This is a great premise for a series and the writer does not disappoint. Witty stories, good mysteries, great characters, loved Jolene sparky, independent and a survivor, Daisy the lie detecting dog, Peter the cop and Will the grumpy bear shifter, there various hilarious conversations with spiders, crabs, lobsters, rats and mice, and one very high snail. Her fight to discover a curse is an arc that stretches across the stories. Her relationship with Peter the cop develops nicely but is hampered by her lies and evasions. This set covers the first 4 books in the eight book series and I look forward to read the rest This is a new author for me but I will on the look out for more stories. Narration is great giving all the characters life and depth. Highly recommended

Cursed Shifter, but Wait . . .

The curse stopped Jolene from shifting, but now she can talk to insects, vermin, and all animals. . . not in her head, out loud! A lawyer who just made partner and got engaged is outed by a jealous coworker with a curse loses it all. Now, she is a pet psychic, barely paying the rent in an apartment house that is run by magic she doesn’t have anymore. She gets a break when a policeman demands she take him to the “underground” vet because his dog partner has been injured. He, then, keeps returning for her to interview animals connected to crimes he is investigating. Each story has different animals and people. The snarky interaction between her and the police dog and the growing friendship with Peter, the detective, are funny and endearing. The interaction of the kids Jolene grew up with in the orphanage plays a part in the dynamics of this depressing part of the island as well. It is a well written series.

Interesting twist from the usual

Usually, the Heroine thinks she's human but then develops magic. In this series, everyone in that area has magic....but the Heroine has been cursed into losing hers. Oh, and she's also a shifter who can no longer shift.

I liked that there were various murder mysteries that she and her potential love interest solved with the help of her new ability to communicate with animals. I liked most of the supporting characters, especially the police dog. But unfortunately, I really didn't like the Heroine. Too much immaturity (considering she's an adult). Too much snark. The Cop love interest is too naive. There wasn't much explanation of the World until 77% on the kindle.

The 'didn't likes' outweighed the 'likes' for me. So for me, it was just OK.

Great Mysteries

I am blowing through these books. Already on the second box set, book 6. The characters keep me guessing. I go back and forth between really liking the H\h and then being very disappointed in them. Isn't that life? She practically gave up on herself until he came along and offered her work and friendship. He is naive and sees the world in black and white regarding some issues. She is on occasion not verbally nice to his police dog Daisy. I think that is what disappoints me the most. But as the books progress, the relationship between the heroine and Daisy improves and becomes more friendly teasing than outright insults. I guess it would be hard to stay cool and calm when the man you are starting to like has a dog who tattles every time you lie. Yep, she lies a lot! Big problems coming in the second box set. Cannot wait to see how that ends up.

Great series with lots of action and suspense
I love this series. It has wonderful plots and the characters are amazing. Each person is relatable and likeable. Even the bad guys. There are some scary parts and some humorous sections. The characters have ARC and the story lines are interesting. Each story brings something new to the audience. Daisy is a wonderful dog who can detect lies. Jolene is a Pet Psychic. She consults for the Police (Peter in particular). She is helping Peter solve cases and she discovers that she is good at it and enjoys the adventure and using her analytical skills. The series has some scary parts, some sad parts and some whimsical parts. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes mysteries, paranormal, or pet stories.

Took a bit for me to get into the first book but kept reading. Jolene is cursed by who she doesn't know nor does she know why. She is now an witch with no powers and a shifter unable to shift. However the curse gave her the ability to speak to animals. Living in a world that doesn't accept shifters she goes back to Darkmoon where she grew up and tries to make a living as a pet psychic.. Enter Peter Flint a member of the police force whom shifters of Dark moon don't trust and his dog who is able to tell if people are telling the truth or lying. The story line continues in each book and Jolene works her way towards finding how to work with the police and still maintain her life in Darkmoon. The constant teasing between girl and dog gets annoying.

I was underwhelmed by the first two books of this series. As a writer myself and former English teacher, I admit to being a language snob. That means, for me, overuse of the same words in a story distract me. "Smirk" and "grin" are the two greatest offenders in these books. There are a whole variety of other expressions that are more appropriate in many of the instances here. Try using the dictionary/thesaurus.com app. Also, a smirk is *not* a nice expression; the definition of the word is important to know when it's used.

I was bored and turned off because of this and the unrealistic nature of some plot elements. I suggest getting a good story editor to evaluate the work before publishing.

Interesting, fun concept

Another fun mystery set. Will get the next set of books to continue the series because I like the series and Daisy the dog. I'm just not a fan of the main character Jolene. She is supposed to communicate with animals which I think is pretty cool, but she doesn't seem to like them very much. She's a real slob and doesn't impress me at all. I don't see how she even has any friends with her yuck factor. She was a high class lawyer but now she's a grub. Although it's a fantasy, it just doesn't make sense to me. Otherwise I am really enjoying this series.

So good!!!!

Jolene Hartgrave had it all.

Successful lawyer, who pulled herself up from a rotten beginning, and the thing no one knew, a shifter. Then it was ripped from her, cursed never to shift again, to never have her magic to use.

Thrown back into the gutter from where she'd come from magicless, except for now being able to talk to animals.

Then her luck starts to change when she meets Peter and his lie detecting dog Daisy.

But as things get better things get complicated and deadly.

Loving these books. Totally different take on shifters and the law 😁😁😁👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Fun stories, great dog

The best books are fun to read, add in a dog and that can either carry the story or make it better. In this case the stories would have been great on their own, but adding in the dog and his partner make them great. I was so glad these were in the collections book, so you can go right to the next story without missing much. I loved all the adventures the main character got into, and am glad to see there are more books in another collection. I rec mend this series and this collection.

Audiobook: I enjoyed all four books in this omnibus of the "Magic Market Series". Each story was fun and delightful. I liked the characters of Jolene, Peter, and Daisy. The mysteries were convoluted, but there were clues that were available, and the culprits could be determined before the end of the story. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series. Hannah Somerville's narration was great, and her performance enhanced the entertainment of the story. I was given a free copy of the audiobook, and I have voluntarily posted this review.

Much more depth and insight than I anticipated

I was drawn into this magical world right away and was fascinated by the story of Bijou Mer. It was often sad or painful but Jolene's life was always interesting. I was not expecting to see prejudice in this magical society, and felt a great deal of sympathy for a struggling orphan. The animal characters were especially fun to listen to and they added so much personality to the story!

Really Fun Books

This book contains the first four Pet Psychic .Mysteries and a link to a free ecopy of the prequel"Saved by the Spell. ". These stories are charming, mildly mysterious, and lighthearted. They can be read independently because each mystery stands alone and includes enough backstory to get a new reader through. The characters develop within each book as well as from book to book. I'll be reading the next book in the series.

Low 3

I liked the character, but not all of these worked well for me. As the series progressed, I felt like magic got more and more powerful and it seems somewhat lacking in limitations. Also the pacing leans to the slow side and at least one of them was more about the personal stuff than the mystery. So while they were okay and some parts were interesting, it just isn't quite there on implementation.

All of this series has paranormal murders that are investigated by a strange trio. A paranormal police officer, his female German Shepherd who can sense the truth or lies of statements. The main character is a cursed paranormal shifter who has no powers except she can communicate with animals in their own languages. She advertises herself as a pet psychic because even paranormals, would think talking to a fish in glub talk is weird.

A cosy murder is magic

These four books are funny as well as having magical murders. Jolene is poor, hungry and about to be evicted. A good deed leads to an upturn in her circumstances, as she finds a "job" . I liked the characters who include a bear shifter, a policeman and a dog with an unusual talent. A good read it you like fantasy and mysteries.
