I’m Cami O’Brien, and the powers flowing through my voice are turning destructive.

To gain control of them, I must enroll at Elmwick Academy—ready or not.

Elmwick Academy is home to the town’s legacies—the six types of supernatural beings who masquerade as humans. That is, until they show their teeth during class at the Academy.

And then there are the hunters—the humans trying to uncover our secrets. I’m talking about Mason Fowler, my next-door neighbor with smoldering, brandy-colored eyes, who has taken a sudden interest in me.

In a whirlwind of magical twists, I must learn to tell friend from foe, master my abilities before I lose them, and figure out how to hide my powers from Mason. Because revealing the truth could lead to war…

No wonder they call me the harbinger of death.

Newcomer is a young adult fantasy novel about a magical academy and the creatures it hides—the good, the bad and those in between. If you like complicated friendships, dark family secrets, and slow-burn romance, this story will pull you in and leave you wanting more.

Step into a world of magical intrigue now!

Emilia has done it again. This story pulled me in from the first chapter and I found it impossible to put down (I even stayed up till the early hours in order to finish it). This is the first book in a new series and I'm already excited to read the next one! ⁣

I am in love with this world that she has created and all the detail that has gone into it. I found myself growing attached to these characters, especially the legacy kids and Cami who is struggling to gain control over her own powers. Mason definitely grew on me but I felt so suspicious of him that I didn't want to get too attached incase I needed to hate him later. ⁣

The lore and the history of this town and it's residents are so thought out and everything just clicks into place. It was perfect and everything I wanted.⁣

If you love YA Fantasy, dark secrets, slow-burn romance and new friendships then this is the book for you!

Newcomer is the first book in Emilia Zeeland’s Elmwick Academy, and I was eager to dive into this one after adoring the author’s STAR Academy series. Although it took me a while to get into this one, I ended up hooked.

Newcomer starts somewhat slowly, as we’re introduced to a world of mystery. There are plenty of elements that remain unknown throughout, details I hope we find out more about in the future books, but in this one details are slowly given to suck the reader ever deeper into the story. With some popular creatures, some creatures that are rarely focused upon, and some new elements, this one offers plenty to keep the reader turning the pages and wanting more.

With great characters and plenty of elements I want to find out more about, Newcomer has me eager to see what happens next.

Original review

This book was provided by the author in exchange for an honest review. Thank you Emilia Zeeland!

Newcomer
is the first book in the Elmwick Academy series and tells the story of Cami.

First of all, let’s talk about the cover: It’s stunning! I love the blue and the lettering! I’m a huge fan of this cover and I cannot wait to see the cover of the other books in the series! Now, let’s talk about the book. So I really enjoyed reading Emilia Zeeland’s first series called the STAR Academy series and when I discovered her new series, I was so excited! I’m so happy that I read Newcomer because now it’s my favourite book by Emilia Zeeland so far!

When I started reading this book, I knew that I was going to love it. I instantly loved Cami, I really like her personality and I love that she’s somewhat special. I’m also a sucker for star-crossed lovers so when I read about Mason, I immediately shipped them. I cannot wait to read more about them in the other books. I also really liked Jean, I want to read some more about her too. I really liked the characters and that there are ‘legacies’, I think it’s really original. I haven’t read something like this before and that makes me love the book even more!

Newcomer is such a good Young Adult Fantasy and I think it’s the best one I’ve read so far in 2020. I haven’t been reading that many YA books so it was really nice to read one and I enjoyed every bit of it. Emilia Zeeland did such an amazing job with this book and I’m really excited for the second book in the series. I hope I don’t have to wait too long because I really want to know what’s going to happen next for Cami!

This is the first book I have ever read from this author. It started off at a slow pace but the suspense is slowly building until you are on the edge of your seat. I was so immersed in this story that I did not want to put it down. Between the mysterious goings on and the slightly eerie feel this book was one awesome read. I will definitely read more books by this author.

I could not put this down. Cami, the last banshee roaming free, has come home to Elmwick. After her mother was murdered, her father brought her to where all the legacies live. She is taught and trained to claim her powers on her 17th birthday. If not, then she loses them and her hearing. As the date looks closer, things around her heat up with the hunter next door. Now she must maintain her secret while not losing herself in the process. I can not wait to read the next book!!!

When I began reading the book “Newcomer, Elmwick Academy, Book 1” I was prepared for another “coming into their powers” type shifter story. Boy did I get a lot more than I bargained for. I don’t want to say too much amd let the vipers out of the bag though...

What I will say is that Elmwick Academy is a place for people with supernatural powers. They attend regular high school with normal humans during the day, then they study about their innate capabilities that will come to life on their 17th birthday. It is very important that they not only learn about their powers but also, learn to control their powers, all while keeping the normal humans from figuring out what is going on. They have the help of the charmers to hide their idiosyncrasies.

Cami just moved back to Elmwick . Her family had left ten years ago after her mom brokered a peace with the Hunters who also lived in Elmwick. The peace was to be held unless there was a death caused by either side. since her family left ten years ago. Cami’s “claiming” or coming into her powers had a gut wrenching emotional appeal. You may need a few tissues to get through that part as it is so well written, you feel like you are present watching it with Cani.

If you like supernatural books that have some similarities with others but, where in other cases the author takes a turn all to herself such as with Awan’s powers, you will really enjoy this book. Also, what is a YA book without a little romance thrown in? Read on to find out if this impossible group can keep the peace while coming into new powers and being hunted by the hunters! Well worth reading! I am looking forward to Book 2 Suspension!

Oh, the angst of teenage years, I remember it well! High school is difficult on the best of days, with the "who likes whom", "what did they say about me", "oh no, he/she is not welcome in our group", etc. But when said high school is filled with regular kids AND various monsters, the stakes are even higher.

I have enjoyed many of Ms. Zeeland's books, and this ranks as one of the best. The kids are totally believable, even those that are not human but must display themselves as such. She has imagined new twists about the abilities and powers of these creatures, some which make really good sense. Ms. Zeeland is able to paint a great picture of the schools, the town, and the typical interactions of kids. This story will enchant young adult readers while still being able to withstand the skepticism of us old codgers. And I do appreciate a story not filled with curse words just curses. (grin) It's an easy read and I think it's a good character study of how people have preconceived perceptions of others who are not exactly like themselves.

This book is described as young adult fiction but as a mature adult (in my 60’s) I did not let that put me off reading it and I suggest neither should you. It is well worth a read if you enjoy a little love, mystery and a touch of the supernatural.
Cami comes back to Elmwick, a place that she hasn’t lived in since she was a small child. Now approaching her seventeenth birthday this is the only place to learn about the powers she must claim or lose a part of herself.
All is not as is at first appears and Cami must first learn to trust her instincts about who she is and who she can trust.
For Mason the new girl next door presents a challenge. Should he get to know her as his father suggests or will knowing her cause him all sorts of confusion?
Mason too learns more about himself but by the end of this story is he more confused than ever about both himself and his family?
Book 2, Suspension awaits.

I felt in love with the concept of the city of Elmwick immediatly, and with the main characters, the cross-Stars lovers Cami and Mason.

Not only the story is just the YA fantasy romance that I love but it is really original in its supernatural families, not only the most commons vamps, weres and witches but banhees, lions, vamps and of course... hunters and family secrets!

I really loved and enjoy the POV perspective having one chapter each thru Cami’s and Mason’s eyes giving us a 360* view of the story and insides.

I was ARCing for the author (thanks Emilia!) and can’t wait for book 2 to see how the story follows!

This is a great supernatural read. The book is written from two points of view: Cami, a rare supernatural just coming into her powers; and Mason, a monster hunter trying to find out who are the monsters and learning how to kill them. It's a book about finding out who you are despite outside pressures and about controlling new powers that don't want to stay hidden. Cami has a choice: does she want to keep her powers, which will endanger her life, or give them up and lose her hearing. Mason has to find out who the monsters are before they find him. I felt the true meaning of the story was - who are the real monsters. I loved this story and really recommend it.

This is the first book that I have read by Emilia Zeeland and it was pretty good. For one, I was too intrigued with the mystery of the story. The story builds slowly but it is intense. The mystery being that once you learn something new and you think you have it all figured and then here comes the twist. You have Cami moving back to her home town to go to Elmwick Academy. However, things get crazy now. So this town is full of supernaturals, humans and hunters. Say what? Yes Hunters! This all evolves around teenagers who cannot talk about any supernatural stuff. Mason, who is Cami's neighbor knows that something weird is going on in this town. He is determined to find out. But at what cost. Lets not forget the attraction between Cami and Mason so this is going to get messy. So what will happen once the secrets out. You will need to read to find out what happens.

Well this was a different take on the supernatural community. I liked how some of the main legacies weren't your normal supernatural people. Though I'm not sure I ever want to be friends with a snake. Most academy books I have read the people are college age. In this book they are in high school. Cami is back after being away from her hometown for the past ten years. She is there to learn about her supernatural abilities and also wants to keep the peace. Like everything in life everything doesn't go according to plan. This is a good setup to what will be coming in the rest of the series.

I received a free e-arc in exchange for an honest review.

After reading The Star Academy trilogy earlier this year, I was so excited to read Emilia's first foray into urban fantasy and it did not disappoint.

We follow Cami, a 16yo legacy, as she returns to her hometown of Elmwick 10 years after leaving it. She is preparing for her Claiming where, on her 17th birthday, she will either reject of accept her legacy powers.

Elmwick is now a safe haven for the 6 types of Legacies, but it came at a price that Cami's mother paid dearly for.

As Cami approaches her 17th birthday, her powers start to grow, and her problems with it...

I really enjoyed the dual POV's from Cami and Mason, as it meant we saw both sides of the story; how their growing attractions affected them and their loyalties and how Mason slowly discovered the truth of his family heritage and the Legacies along with his internal struggle of who's side was the 'right' side.

I really liked the town of Elmwick and I loved all six of the different variations of Legacies. Emilia has used some existing creatures such as Werewolves and Vampires (Cold Ones) along with creating some of her own and tweaking some existing but less common creatures.

Emilia has a special knack for building a female friendship from nothing as well as creating a great found family dynamic.
I loved watching the friendship between Cami & Jean develop and how they navigate their own issues with trust and who they are.
The character of Vanessa definitely reminded me of Natalia from The Unsound Theory and I'm intrigued to find out more about her. I really appreciate how Emilia's characters are never quite what you think.

I loved the take on Banshee powers and the use of sound waves as a weapon, as well as the added power of visions. Banshees are a creature that aren't represented in stories often and if they are, it's often as a villain or an inconvenience so I enjoyed the fresh take!

I also really loved the idea of the Lions, the astral projection guardian was such a cool and unique idea and I really want to learn more about them.

All of the legacies have side-effects if they are not claimed, a lot of which result in disability such as becoming deaf or blind which easily could have come across as ableism but I think it's handled well.
At no point is Cami scared of potentially becoming deaf, her grandmother is deaf and Cami also learns sign language as a child. Her father clearly tells that he'll accept her no matter what she chooses and there is no shame in either choice. Cami is more focused on whether she can control her powers or not, not on whether or not she will become deaf.
My only point about this would be that when Mason realises the effects if Cami rejects her powers, which the Hunters are trying to coerce her to do, he thinks 'They never mention the fate she'll suffer if she doesn't claim her powers' which *could* be seen as him viewing deafness in a negative light.

The action scenes were gripping and I also found it really interesting that how the visions are interpreted can make a huge difference and how that made you not trust certain people throughout the book. I also really enjoyed lthe revelations at the end of the book and how it makes you question things even more.

Basically I can't wait for book 2 to be released and to see what's going to happen next!

CW: violence, death, deafness, poison

Newcomer is an interesting read that will have you asking tons of questions throughout the entire book. Cami is a special legacy and moves back to her hometown to learn how to control her powers. When she gets there, she meets Mason. He is from a hunter family who has kept him in the dark about his own legacy and who the people around him really are. Mason soon relentlessly searches for answers, coming to the wrong conclusions almost every time. This book is a story of both of them learning the truth and becoming who they were born to be.
While Newcomer is an interesting story, some things are kept hidden for a lot of the book. It builds suspense, but also frustration as the reader struggles to understand what’s going on. Character motivations aren’t explained very well, which damages the overall plot of the story. The hunters hunt legacies. This makes sense for a few of the legacies, but why hunt all of them? With the peace, they no longer hurt anyone. So why are hunters still hunting? The major conflict of the story seems to be made up just to drive the story. There isn’t enough supporting evidence for it to be believable.
In addition to that, the peace that was achieved should have been broken much sooner. While the Legacies have done nothing to provoke the hunters according to the book, the hunters have done many things that should have the legacies ready to kill them all.
This book reminds me a bit of the Secret Circle by L. J. Smith. It has the feeling of traditions passed down in a small town with parental choices affecting their descendants. It was enjoyable just to read, but analyzing it raises a bunch of issues that take away from its overall value.

I recieved a copy of this book for an honest review through Voracious Readers Only.

I received a review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I really struggled with the first part of this book. It felt like an info-dump where, as the reader, I wasn't privy to the lore behind the world yet or all the terms, and so I was just left feeling really confused. However, once the world starts being revealed to the reader, it's a much smoother and very enjoyable journey. So, if you also struggle at the beginning - persevere! It's worth it.

While I still enjoy young adult books, as an older-than-I'd-like-to-admit adult, I realise I have well and truly outgrown books that take place in schools. I'm just past the age where I can relate to school ground politics and first loves, even if they are in a more interesting, magical setting. However, I still really enjoyed this book and I know full well that younger me would have loved it even more.

The best thing about this book is the plot. It definitely kept me reading on and wanting to find out what happened next, and there were plenty of twists and turns to keep me interested. The concept behind the story was well planned out and I feel like the chosen supernatural entity of the protagonist is a rarely used one, which made it all the better. The characters were fine, they weren't bad, but they almost felt cliche to the YA genre, especially those set in schools. It felt like the author played on certain stereotypes a little too much, but that could just be my adult cynicism.  Overall, a great read, but maybe one that can be better appreciated by younger readers who can relate to the characters more.

I remember those days of entering junior high – it was the real time that clicks formed and I never figured out who got to be in the “IN Click” never made sense to me but I knew I was not in and I would never ever be in. I survived but I wonder if I not only had to deal with the mean girls and monsters, witches, those coming alive with new magic, oh my, would I have survived. This should give you a little insight that this academy was not just the normal supernatural l academy! Elmwick Academy is home to the town’s legacies—the six types of supernatural beings who masquerade as humans. That is, until they show their teeth during class at the Academy. So you have regular old human students, the supernatural students and then HUNTERS. Who do you talk to, who can be your best friend? Who do you trust? So our protagonist Cami O’Brien must figure all this out while she is developing her own supernatural abilities. How does she learn when she has to hide her powers most of the time? If she seeks help from the wrong person it could literally mean life or death. And the hardest part of all is that her power is her voice! Emilia Zeeland is a gifted writer. This is a brilliant read ... well written plot and story line that had me engaged from the start. I love the well fleshed out characters I found them believable. Great suspense and action with and wonderful world building. I highly recommend this novel. I gave this honest, voluntary review after being given a free copy of the book.

4.8 stars I give this book....Ok 1st thank you BookSiren for having a great site to find new authors to love.. Thank You Emilia Zeeland for allowing me to fall in love with not only these characters but with your stories in this Elmwick Academy Series. This book took me on a ride that kept me pacing, stopping to catch my breath and to calm down from screaming along with Cami. The storyline is perfect and surprised me to find out who Cami really was and what everyone is to be honest. Mason grow on me at first I was bored with him but I've grown to love him. I do have only one negative of this book, I would like to have had it just be that a book instead of Cami's and Mason stories for each chapter. When you are getting all excited about what's happening on Cami's side it switched to Mason and you lose that high and feel deflated then the same on Mason's side. It's a high and low kind of ride but a good one mind you just would have like it to just be one big story. I'm off to get book 2 seriously still on a high from this one.. Recommend to anyone who loves super naturals, family , friends, love and being on the edge of your seat excitement this book is for you. The book cover is beautiful Andreea-Elena Vraciu. Gina Clabo

Before I begin my review for Newcomer (Elmwick Academy book 1) by Emilia Zeeland, I would personally like to thank the author, publisher and Booksirens for the opportunity to read this ARC and I have reviewed it honestly.

Shes a banshee; the last of her kind. He's a hunter; destined to rid the world of supernaturals. Their relationship was doomed from the start. Join Cami and Mason as she struggles to master her gifts and he fights to see through the haze of a town that's just not quite right.

Newcomer features, but is not limited to, the following themes:
○ YA fantasy
○ High school
○ Forbidden romance
○ Supernatural Academy
○ Supernatural beings
○ Curses
○ MPOV

My overall rating for Newcomer is…

3.5 Stars!

Newcomer is an interesting combination of human high school and supernatural acadamy, where both coexist beside each other, but the humans are clueless. I enjoyed the mix of supernatural beings and their titles in this book and how they veered away from their predictable stereotypes somewhat. I didn't love the characters, however. The friendships felt forced and messy and the forbidden love did little for my feels. Overall, Zeeland has created an intriguing tale of supernaturals, curses and magic.

This was a good start to a paranormal series of different legacies. This book has so many twists and turns that will have you wondering who is who and who can be trusted. You have Cami and Mason who are drawn to one another but have no idea why and you have the slow burn of a coming of age romance. They are the star-crossed lovers trying to find their way to one another without understanding their connection. This book has so many details on the myths of different supernatural creatures and even hunters of them, think of a cross between Supernatural meets vampire dairies and beautiful creatures. This book is very intriguing and makes you want to unravel the secrets of each individual who lives in this tiny nowhere town. I was given an ARC by booksirens for my honest opinion and I definitely recommend this book if you like indepth paranormal books with a coming of age romance mixed in. This is a twist and turns of mystery of each individual in this book, so be prepared to be sucked into this mysterious world. Can't wait to see how this series will play out.

I recieved a free copy of this book via booksirens in eschange for an honest review.

I really enjoyed this book, it was cheesy as hell but it was fun and not read a book about banshees before. This book may change that for me, I will be reading more. It did have the cliched teen enemies attracted but there was a lot more too it to.

There were some great dynamics between the characters and many mysteries to work out, some I am looking forward to discovering in the second book.

Cami was a great MC, she new what she had to do but she also knew what she wanted, so there was a little battle inside her head, which I loved. I| love books where there are multiple fantasy creatures, which this had, I just wish we found out a little bit more about them all.

Overall I really enjoyed this book and have already got book two sitting on my kindle waiting for me.
