I looked down at the baby sleeping against my chest. I’d also been taught that protecting children always came first.
“She’s not stupid, but she’s selfish as fuck,” Cam muttered.
“You left me pregnant and alone,” I said, my voice vibrating with the anger and resentment I was trying so hard to control. “Because you weren’t ready. Because you wanted to get out of Eugene. Because you wanted to play soldier. You. You. You.
“Because I did see the aftermath,” she said, shaking her head. “I saw the way it wrecked you. I also saw him come back, heart in his hands, and you wrecked him right back.”
“He left, and I was so terrified and helpless and without options that I had an abortion. There’s no coming back from that.” “You had options,” my mom pointed out. “You were never alone.”
“God, I was snorting so much coke.” I shook my head. “That was part of the reason I made the decision to go through with it. Who knows how much damage I’d done by that point?” “I didn’t know that.”
“I thought you’d wait.” “If you’d have given any indication that I should,” she said gently, “I would’ve.” “Fuck,” I whispered. “Fuck.”
“I would have followed you to the fucking moon,” she said, her voice almost pleading. “And you left me without a word.”
“They’re the black sheep, and I’m the llama. I don’t fit…and I spit at people.”
Me and Leo just hadn’t fit, and we’d both known it. Ironically, he’d fit with my baby sister—who was my complete opposite.
Like I’d told Mark, even my family had let the stuff from the past stay in the past—from what I could see, they weren’t holding any grudges. So why the hell would Leo? It didn’t make any sense.
“Dad was more of a Zeppelin guy,” he said, clearing his throat. “The Who. Pink Floyd. Bob Dylan. Creedence.”
Knowing that they hadn’t gotten back together after I’d left didn’t lessen my hatred. If anything, it made it worse.
“From what I remember, once you were drunk, you weren’t too careful about what you spread around the bar,” Leo said, his voice flat.
I met Leo’s eye. He wasn’t glaring, but his expression wasn’t exactly welcoming, either. Yeah, we were going to go rounds if he didn’t get his shit straight.
Rose and Mack had broken up before they were kidnapped because he refused to have any more kids.
Drake Warren had come for me in Eugene and somehow Leo, a man that I’d already betrayed in a variety of ways when we were kids, had born the brunt of his presence.
From The Aces series to The Aces’ Sons series, I’ve followed the Aces MC from the very beginning. The danger, brotherhood, loyalty and family are some of the things that attracted me and hooked me deeper into the fold. Craving Cecilia came as a welcomed surprised release. It was finally time for the most misunderstood person within the crew to get her belated redemption.
From previous books, we’ve known Cecilia as the bitchy selfish brat who always acted out and only brought trouble to the Aces family. However, after peeling away all the complex layers surrounding Cecilia’s heart, everyone would agree that they misunderstood Cecilia and got her all wrong. She was the strongest, bravest and most loyal person who was hiding behind a prison of guilt that she had built by herself. Acting out and being crude were her ways of defense and self-preservation.
Mark and Cecilia were in love when they were in their teens, but Mark left Ceecee in Eugene without explanation. Their connection and bond were still strong and electric even with a decade between them. With the flashbacks and retelling of the past, it was evident that they were meant to be together but they were too young and too broken in their younger years. They both made mistakes and assumptions that they regretted. They needed the time apart to grow up a little to be able to appreciate what they had in front of them.
Ceecee was at the wrong place at the wrong time and the trouble which brought her back to Mark and the Aces family was gripping and exciting. The danger, suspense and actions that they had to navigate kept me on the edge of the seat. It was wonderful to meet the others as we head back to the Aces compound in Eugene. I felt like I went home too alongside Ceecee and Woody.
I truly had an enjoyable and gratifying time reading this gripping, fast-paced, and emotional second-chance MC romance. The story introduce Mark’s team of mercenaries. This new crew of characters were interesting and I feel like they all had a story worth telling behind them. I really want to get to know them better and hopefully it would lead to a new series in the future.
I volunteered to provide an honest review of an advance complimentary copy of this book.
