A beginning to a new saga? When we finished the previous Dragon Assassin book I had assumed the story was over. At least for now. And here we are back again with another book and new adventure beginning. This is a great piece of writing and takes the story of Carmen and Drax in a whole new direction. In some ways it was as intense as the whole previous 8 books. From the very first words our interest is grasped, and the attention kept. Those words are:

“I had never seen a dragon so completely and utterly destroyed. Its battered and broken body lay on the shore of the island. I wanted to turn my head away from the carnage, but my training had taught me it was always better to look at the worst wounds or worst situations and gather knowledge. The crumpled, crushed body took awhile to come into focus. Its scales were red, the same color as its blood. That meant it was a Crimson dragon.

One of the strongest, most powerful types of dragon in the world.”

The description of the book is:

“An ancient enemy rises from the seas...
Brax and Carmen are exploring the ocean when they come across the dead body of a dragon on an island. He was an outcast, living far away from Drachia. And he was just recently killed. It turns out that the old enemy that the dragons believed were all destroyed have returned. And they want revenge. One dead dragon at a time...”

Up until now I had assumed that the Dragon’s were the most powerful creatures in the world. There may be some wizards that could rival a dragon one on one, but nothing that appeared to be able to beat them in physical combat. That has all changed. We are soon embroiled in a war. Between the creatures that have returned and the Dragons. Surprising tactics are used. Carem realizes some of the tactics being used, but once Brax loses his temper almost all is lost.

Be warned the story ends on a cliffhanger, and it will leave you desperate for the next installment. This is a great book and as mentioned the start of a new adventure for the duo of Carmen the human assassin and Brax the Dragon Prince. The writing is great. The characters are excellent. And it is classic epic fantasy.

Another great read from Arthur Slade’s masterful pen.

I thought this series had ended and I was so very happy to find out that there was still more to the story. Since I have been listening to this entire saga on audio, I found that the next installment was book 9 and 10 combined.

In this saga, Brax and Carmen are taking a breather after the finale with the evil emperor and somehow stumble upon the discovery of an enemy that the dragons thought had been extinguished.

Unfortunately, there is not a lot of time from when they discover this danger to when the foe makes their presence known. The bad news is that the dragons are not the victors in this battle.

Let me through in a few words of praise here. I listen to A LOT of books on audio, and I do mean A LOT. The narrator of this series is truly incredible. She does such a fantastic job of creating not only a unique voice of Carmen and Brax, but of every other character that is in this story. She has made this series so EASY to listen to. HOURS have gone by without me even realizing that the story has progressed. That is how involved in the story I have become. The narrator is Claire Corbett. I am going to look her up after this to see what else she has narrated, that is how much I think of her performance on this series. Anyway, I just wanted to put it out there.

So, we now have a new foe. And one that seems to be unbeatable......but....what if Carmen calls on the person she has been thinking of this entire time.....????

Dragon Assassin 9: Old Enemies by Arthur Slade begins with Carman and Brax exploring the sea environs where they find the dead body of a very large dragon. It appears unwounded, but the nearby shore shows a deep furrow as if the dragon had fallen from the sky. Searching further, it begins to look like the dragon was killed by repeatedly being smashed into the shore until quite dead. How could this be? It could only have been done by something giant!

Long ago, all the Giants had been driven over the cliffs, burned and utterly destroyed by decree of the King of Dragons. But, they have now returned for revenge and relentlessly begin a total Dragon extermination.

I was given an Arc of this book by the author. I have voluntarily posting an honest review.

Brax (the formerly one eyed dragon) and Carmen (his assassin friend) are off on adventures again (you really should read the books before this to gain all the history, if you haven't already). While out on their adventure, they come across an old enemy of the dragons, who now have some more tricks up their sleeves. Will the old enemy bring the dragons down this time? I loved this new addition to this fantastic series, and I look forward to reading the next one.

Carmen and Brax are travelling when they are faced with an ancient dragon enemy reappearing. The confrontation is brutal and devastating with Carman having to balance a difficult line between her human and dragon loyalties.
Arthur Slade does an excellent set up for the final story in the series. This story may be too violent for younger readers but will captivate young adult and more mature readers.

I thought the last book was the end of this series but that is not true. Now Carmen & Brax was faced with a new foe: rock giants. How do you kill that kind of enemy? You have to read this book to find out. This book is just as exciting as the previous ones. I really love this series & can't wait for the next book. I received an ARC. This is my voluntary opinion.

I thought this series had ended with the 8th book, but was pleasantly surprised to have another book in the series. The story was quick moving and interesting story line. I am really looking forward to the next book, as I'm hoping that Brax comes through it safely. I am also curious as to how the giants are handled.

A completely invulnerable enemy, Allie’s who are essentially useless and a fmc who hasn’t even tried to better herself and learn new skills or develop her magic. I sincerely hope fmc does something and doesn’t just fumble along to a victory.

I didn't like this book nearly as much as the other books. The start of this new saga wasn't bad, but there are some elements I could do without.

It's interesting to see the war between the giants and dragons reignited. Will be interesting to see how it all plays out.

One of my favourite characters, dragons. Unfortunately are they all dead? Totally intriguing and can’t wait for the next one. Definitely a must when it’s released.

What a turnaround! Our mighty Dragon Empire decimated by a race of beings that they had expelled from their lands millenia ago.

As Carmen seems to be immune to the influence the Giants have on the Dragons, Queen Brea charges her with infiltrating the enemy camp (as the Giants have no problem with humans), and finding their weakness, if there is one.

I look forward to reading Book 10 as I am dying to find out how this all pans out. Happy reading. Annemarie.
