ΣΥΝΟΨΗ: "Το σαλόνι των εξόριστων καλλιτεχνών στην Καλιφόρνια" είναι μια βιογραφία της φιγούρας της Σάλκα Βίρτελ, μιας Εβραίας ηθοποιού που μετανάστευσε στο Χόλυγουντ και ήταν γνωστή ως σεναριογράφος της Σουηδέζας ηθοποιού Γκρέτα Γκάρμπο. Επιπλέον, είχε ένα σαλόνι στη Σάντα Μόνικα, Καλιφόρνια, στο οποίο παρευρίσκονταν πολλοί ευρωπαίοι διανοούμενοι στην εξορία. Η Σάλκα ήταν μια πολύ μοντέρνα και ενδιαφέρουσα για την εποχή γυναίκα που πρέπει να είναι γνωστή όπως της αξίζει. Στο βιβλίο παρουσιάζονται ποικίλα και ενδιαφέροντα θέματα της εποχής άμεσα συνδεδεμένα με τα μεγάλα γεγονότα του 20ού αιώνα.
Με αυτό το έργο η συγγραφέας απέκτησε τις υποτροφίες διαμονής του Προγράμματος Συγγραφής της Σαγκάης (Κίνα, 2016) και του Βαλτικού Κέντρου (Σουηδία, 2017).

Her novel "Els nens de l'Elisa" was third among the finalists for the 24th Ramon Llull Prize for Catalan Literature and was published in 2006. "L'escriptora morta" [The Dead Writer, 2020], in 2008; "Núvols baixos" [Lowering Clouds, 2020], in 2009, and "La mirada del fill", in 2012. Her most recent work "El salón de los artistas exiliados en California" [The Salon of Exiled Artists in California, 2020] is a biography of scriptwriter Salka Viertel, a Jewish salonnière and well-known in Hollywood in the thirties as a specialist on Greta Garbo scripts.
Some of her novels, short stories, and articles have been translated into Spanish, French, English, Italian, German, Polish, Chinese, Latvian, Portuguese, Dutch, and Greek.
Her writing focuses on the characters' psychology, generally antiheroes. The characters are the most important in her books, much more than the topic, due to "an introspection, a reflection, not sentimental, but feminine". Her novels cover a multitude of topics, treat actual and socially relevant problems such as injustices or poor communication between people, and frequently, the core of her stories remains unexplained. Añó asks the reader to discover the "deeper meaning" and to become involved in the events presented.

Esta biografía está escrita de una forma original y concienzuda, muy bien documentada, biografía apasionante donde la autora indaga de una forma muy interesante y así lo muestra con la vida de Salka Viertel, una mujer polaca y judía nacida a finales del siglo XIX.
Salka Viertel vivió dos guerras mundiales y dos exilios, sorteó los peligros, las pérdidas, el dolor que conlleva todo ello y el hecho de ser diferente a las mujeres de su época, en unos tiempos donde la mujer tenía que hacerse un hueco en la sociedad, que le era negado. Ella fue valiente y luchadora, en un mundo donde dominaban los hombres, sobre todo en el ámbito laboral y social.
Salka Viertel fue una mujer de gran calidad humana, amiga de sus amigos, acogedora, amable, culta... Sin plantearse nada en especial, dejó fluir su interesante vida, fue actriz, salonnière, guionista, madre, amante, amiga, esposa... En su casa del exilio en California creó un salón literario y de encuentro. Allí conoció a grandes escritores, actores, poetas, pintores... la mayoría la admiraban y adoraban. Durante años fue guionista de la actriz sueca Greta Garbo y por ello, su autora ahonda sutilmente en la profunda y larga amistad entre ambas.
La bisexualidad, la homosexualidad, la diferencia de edad entre parejas, las cobardes traiciones políticas en la conocida "caza de brujas", la amistad, la familia, la guerra, la muerte, el hambre... El Nazismo visto desde el exilio, temas interesantes como el mundo del cine mudo, sonoro y sus trifulcas, la vida fugaz de las estrellas de la gran pantalla etc. Unas vidas de cine que se reunían en un salón cada domingo.
Su autora Núria Añó no solo presenta la vida de esta salonnière y de otra gente admirable que ha formado parte de nuestra historia pasada y reciente, sino que a través de sus vidas conocemos un momento muy crítico en Europa, donde sobrevivir era lo realmente difícil, mientras tanto otros triunfaban y vivían de lujo en la meca del cine en Hollywood. Un sinfín de vidas intensas y cómo las narra la autora, como personas sin miedo y luchando, día a día, contra corriente, muchas veces, sin perder la esperanza y sin olvidar los orígenes lejanos y el país de dónde proceden: esa Alemania que llevan en su corazón y que la historia les arrebató.
