Trashy Suspense Novel

Rate this book
"Once upon a time, the towering pines and sturdy Carolina hemlock seemed like a protective barrier, the walls of a living sanctuary. But now, draped with morning mist and heaped with snow, my beloved woods appear a menacing maze of secrets and shadows.
The perfect hiding place for monsters."

Eloise Keller doesn’t believe in the Bogman, the creature that’s said to haunt the woods of her small mountain town. Or rather, she doesn’t want to believe in it. She’d rather devote her time and energy to raising her son, running her bookstore, and daydreaming about Daniel Brunsworth, the handsome horror novelist who’s just moved to town.

Her sense of certainty is shaken, however, when a young tourist mysteriously vanishes from a neighboring ski resort. And with sightings of the Bogman steadily escalating, Eloise may well soon discover that some monsters are real whether she believes in them or not.

At first I thought it was more a romcom than a suspense novel, but I was proved wrong. The ending was very very creepy. And I was also made sad. But again Jackie got me to love her characters and I hope they'll live happily ever after.

Trashy Suspense Novel is my 3rd Jacqueline E. Smith, so far it's still a hit with me. I love how immersive her novels are, in terms of the characters' environment, their different upbringings, the characters themselves and how the plot flows. However, what I kind of miss here in Trashy Suspense Novel was that I think I was too focused on the mystery on hand and I am getting served by too much romance? Although, reaching the end still makes me think that I got played by the author, because, literally, it's there on the title, suspense. The suspense of the triller I think.

I'll never get tired of meeting Jacqueline E. Smith's characters! I'll probably read Cemetery Tours soon.

Disclosure: I won this book from the author's giveaway. Thank you so much Ms. Jackie!

Midland TX ComixCon had a wide assortment of retailers. Ms. Smith had a nice setup and we talked about books. Her Trashy Suspense Novel is not that trashy. The romance is well developed. The Suspense is also not that complex but near the end we get some action. Overall her characters are good. Eloise is a bit of a "too much helicopter mom" but it works in this setting. Small town in North Carolina is the setting, given just enough development, the plot is almost a "cozy formula" although the usual normal person being a nosey detective is absent giving us a better read without knowing what was coming next as with so many cozy mysteries. So a good read, nice story and no over-the-top situations.

This is Jacqueline E Smith’s greatest book yet! The characters come to life in a delightful story that I literally hated to put down, as cliche as it is to say. I have had trouble staying focused long enough to read these last few years, but I always look forward to Jacqueline’s books because it’s so fun to jump into the worlds she creates. This was fun and engaging...and suspenseful!

First person narrator Eloise has a warm heart and a fun-to-read narrative voice. When Daniel comes into her bookstore, the sparks begin to fly, and then Eloise finds out that Daniel is the famous horror author D.H. Whittaker. My favorite part was how the cryptid Bogman is woven into the plot, along with excerpts from D.H. Whittaker's fictional horror novels. Highly recommend this book for fans of romance and suspense!

A Perfect Blend of Suspense and Romance

This was the first book that I’ve read by Jacqueline Smith, but it most definitely will not be the last! She managed the perfect balance of romance and suspense that made me want to keep turning the pages. And I don’t know how Jacqueline did it, but she made me, this 100% Texas girl, want to pack up my family and move to a small town up north!
