I suppose after so many books our perfect team of cold case detectives was bound to have a falling out, especially as they are a married couple. It was a big change for the series since Dehan and Stone usually get on so well they practically read each others minds. However when Carmen is accused of murder Stone will do anything in his power to clear her name.
As usual the book is action packed and moves fast. Emotions run high and not everyone acts the way they normally would. I enjoyed the way Stone and Dehan worked through their issues and then dealt with the case in the same way they always do despite the fact that this time it was personal.
This is such a great series - please write some more Mr Banner!!!

John Stone and Carmen Deehan are partners on the cold case unit in the 43rd precinct in New York, they're also husband and wife too.
This book starts with Stone not being able to sleep so he gets up and alternates between looking out of the window and looking at Deehan his sleeping wife wondering where it's all gone wrong.
At 6.00 am he goes for a shower and goes downstairs to prepare breakfast and is joined by Deehan after she had showered too. Stone is standing eating a slice of toast and has a cup of coffee in his hand. Deehan notices he doesn't look quite right and asks what's wrong? Stone then asks her if she has feelings for Detective Tony Sanchez an officer from the 45th precinct she's been working with at a youth club to stop underprivileged kids getting into gangs and crime? Deehan is flabbergasted and can't believe her ears and asks where this is coming from? Stone says that he hasn't seen her at home for 3 months as she's always at the youth club. Stone is also a lot older than Deehan and Tony is her age and a handsome young man. Deehan is hurt by the accusation and admits that although she'd been neglecting him lately it was all for the benefit of the kids and she only loved him.
In the middle of this conversation the door bell rings, it's their colleague Mo from the 43rd precinct and he asks what time Deehan had arrived home the previous night? Deehan answers between 10 and 10.15 pm and asks why he wants to know? He asks if she's ever been to Tony Sanchez home? Deehan and Stone are becoming annoyed and ask what's going on? Mo then tells them he's here to arrest Deehan for the murder of Tony Sanchez as her finger prints are on the murder weapon, Tony's police issue .38, and the bannisters of the House and the head and base board of the bed. Deehan can't believe her ears and Stone goes to check the pockets of her jacket and finds nitrile glove and evidence bags.
Tony's wife Astrid had been at a company dinner the previous evening as they had just landed another property deal and when she'd come home she went to the study to pour herself a nightcap and was confronted by an armed assailant who fired 3 shots and she managed to fire 2 in return. After she had saw them make off through the garden and into the woods she'd gone immediately to check on her husband and was faced with a grizzly scene of finding Tony dead, shot 4 times centre mass in the stomach.
After convincing Stone she was innocent, she'd never been to the family home and never ever handled Tony's gun, and that he was the only man for her they go about solving the crime, after she's freed on bail.
Stone and Deehan's boss DCI John Newman call Stone in and asks if the allegations that one of his best officers has been arrested for the murder of another cop are true? Stone admits they are but also that someone is obviously framing Deehan but who and why?
The case is being handled by a DI Blakemore at the 45th and when Stone goes to see him to explain that Deehan was being set up all he's met with is belligerence. As far as Blakemore is concerned this is a slam dunk as Deehan's fingerprints are on the murder weapon and all over the residence where his body was found, the DA thiinks the same too.
When Stone and Deehan start discussing the youth club they make a list of all the people their apart from her and Tony. Their was caretaker and a psychoanalyst named Shanna who checked the kids mental state and the kids themselves as well as a couple of cops from the 45th precinct too. Stone asks Deehan to think if there was ever anything unusual had happened in the three months she'd been there. She suddenly recalled a tall, skinny black guy in deep conversation with the caretaker he was named Tombs on account of his teeth looking like tombstones. Tombs then approaches Deehan asks her if she'd be interested in a one off job for his boss for which she would be well rewarded? On hearing this Deehan realises he's asking her to do a hit and frisks him and searches his bag then tells him to get lost. He tells her she'll regret turning him down and she'd made a big mistake.
With things looking bleak Stone decides to hire Saul Cohen the best attorney in New York who's regular clients are known mafioso.
Saul would love nothing better than to stick it to the NYPD but even he thinks it's a slam dunk and Deehan is guilty. Stone then begins to point out that he and Deehan, a decorated police officer, always carry nitrile gloves and evidence bags everywhere they go, there's no way she'd be that sloppy and leave fingerprints anywhere. And Saul points out, yet there they are in situ at the murder scene.
After their meeting with Saul he advises them to stay at the hotel where he does till the case comes to trial, if it comes to trial?
Stone is owed leave and John Newman his boss tells him he's got the file of what the 45th have on Deehan but obviously he can't show and it can't leave the office but if Newman was called away then the file's just sitting there alone. It makes for grim reading but Stone knows the woman he loves is being set up and he'll go to any lengths to make sure she doesn't spend the next 30 years in prison.
On leaving the precinct his phone rings and its the widow Astrid Sanchez though professionally she goes by the name Astrid Meyer. She inherited a realty company from her father, her great grandfather a German had emigrated to New York and they all became realtors and had built a successful portfolio all over the city. Astrid would like to meet Stone and she could send a car for him. 5 minutes later a car arrive and the driver tells him his name is Stuart, on the short drive to the home of Mrs Meyer, Stuart tells of a woman with a hard outer shell but she's basically got a good heart. When they arrive a maid shows him into the lounge where Astrid Meyer stands, a cold looking woman who's obviously distressed at the loss of her younger husband. Stone asks why she wanted to see him? She immediately goes into a tirade of abuse asking how he could defend his whore of a wife who murdered her lover as he wouldn't leave his wife. Stone defends Deehan and tells her his wife carries latex gloves everywhere she goes and had them with her on the night of the murder, so it was obvious she was being framed. Mrs Meyer had called her husband an angel loved by all who knew him and at that Stone said would you rather an innocent person went to jail or the real murderer, she hissed that he should've been able to control his woman better and threw Stone out.
Stone then goes to see Shana the psychoanalyst to get her take on what happened and she also says that Tony and Deehan were having a torrid affair but she wasn't the only one he was sleeping with. It seemed that Tony was universally liked by all but had being have a series of one night stands as well and he'd bought a house secretly to conduct these affairs, as well as allegedly bedding Deehan. Shana and Tony had actually been best friends since childhood and all through school and college and now she was seeing him in a professional capacity too as his analyst she knew all his secrets. She insisted that Deehan was lying to Stone that the affair was very real and that Stone had to take his head out of his ass and see the truth that was right in front of him, his wife was a whore and killed her lover in a jealous rage. Stone felt that Shanna was holding something else back but he couldn't work out what?
Suddenly Stone receives a call from Astrid Meyer again apologising for her outburst and could she see him again. This time she's more personable and asks that if he's so convinced his wife is innocent she couldn't live with her going down for a crime she didn't commit. She asked him to try to find the real killer and because she was well connected offered to use her influence in any way she could. Stone points out it will also give her closure even although it won't bring her beloved Tony back. He asks to see the crime which hasn't been touched since the forensics team left and she allows him to take a look but she can't face going with him. Stone walks around the scene and notices a hell of a lot of blood for a guy who was shot four times centre mass. The victim would've died quickly so the amount of blood at the scene just didn't tally up. As he thanks Astrid for her cooperation and leaves he bumps into Stuart her driver who has a cottage on the grounds of the Meyer ancestral home. He asks him how on the night of the murder he didn't hear the shots being fired, seven in total, Stuart informs him that both his and the ancestral home have triple glazing and that unless a window was open he couldn't possibly have heard a thing. Stuart then makes an odd statement that on his return to his home after dropping off Astrid at her works do he should've known something bad was going to happen due to the banshee scream he heard from the woods, he thought this was an omen.
How was Stone going to keep Deehan from going to jail for a crime she didn't commit? Was Tony the angel he was made out to be? Was everything in his marriage as rosy as it seemed? Is Blakemore going to do any real police work and see if there could possibly be any other culprits? Is there something altogether more sinister going on here? Who is the mysterious tombs and who is he working for? Was there really a banshee signalling a portent of the evil to occur later that evening. You'll have to read the book to find out.

Stone and Dehan return in their 25th book. If all I said was I pre-order every book in the Dead Cold series, those who know the number if books I read, would be impressed with my opinion of Blake Banner as an author. But lets not stop there.
In Hot Blood Banner has ratcheted up the series. Faced with the possibility his wife has not only "lost interest", but also set herself on a course of self destruction; Detective Stone is forced to question the essence of his career and emotions. The evidence points to an affair and murder! The police and DA see a " slam dunk" while Stone sees his world falling apart.
Only by hiring a shady lawyer and investigating the investigators does he see a possibility of clearing Dehan's name. But his search for the truth only leads to more accusations and evidence. Is this the end if the best Detective team in the 43rd?

Sadly I had to suspend all belief to finish this book. Great series but the author seems to moving both the Stone and Dehan characters away from elegant sleuthing to hardcore intimidation, and in the case of this title, zero regard for the rule of law. We are to accept that Stone can assault, threaten, intimidate multiple characters with impunity, on top of conducting an investigation that he has been ordered to not be involved in. Laughably, several characters accept this "bad behavior" rather than filing complaints against him. I hope this is just a temporary tangent in the series and the duo get back to solving crimes without trampling over peoples rights.

March 18, 2023I can't put a rating on this book. I want to know how we went from the end of the previous book to Dehan being arrested for murder. She was volunteering for 3 months and there wasn't a cold case for her and Stone to work? There was too much that was impossible to believe. Has anyone ever told Mr. Banner that he should use the correct terms that someone who lives in NY would use? Why does he add "the" in front of streets and expressways? Who says that? But, I digress. Stone and Dehan are enjoyable characters and I know that no matter what, Stone will figure it out. How he figures it out is always a mystery to Dehan, and to me, but he does figure it out.

In Not Blood Blake Banner
Detective Dehan, Detective Stones partner and wife is being framed for a murder she didn't commit. All the evidence points to her. A slam dunk case. A jealous and extremely wealthy wife with connections to a homicide detective with connections to criminals to stage and execute a murder. The wife's motive as well as the crooked homicide detective and his hired help? A motive as old as time. Money. Another excellent read on this series. Enjoyed immensely!!!

It's 4 starts but only just.
Story was convoluted. Very little of Dehan in it except when questioning her character. So snippets of the Stone and Dehan duo we love and there was a good plot there but there were some large flaws in the logic of the murder. Like why would someone try and bring Dehan into it knowing who she is, why not just frame someone in the picture and close to him like Shana?
Blakemorea character was annoying and Astrid letting Stone in seemed implausible. I enjoyed parts of it unit felt let down by a lot of it also

Another great twisted mystery
I love the Dead Cold Series and have enjoyed the twist and turns of each and every one. From the very first book the interaction between the main characters intrigued me and kept me waiting for the next one. Love the brilliant minds of Carmen, and John in particular. I enjoy all the deep thoughts and situations and the struggles to untangle them. I did not intend to get hooked, but I’m still coming back for more.
I love the Dead Cold Series and have enjoyed the twist and turns of each and every one. Another in a great series by a great “Indie” Author.
“The Dead Cold Mystery Series” has always been one of my favorite reads and a series I’ve always looked forward to the arrival of a new book.
A great deal has happened over the years since I read book one. However one thing has not. That one thing is that each book has been a great story.
This book is no exception and I highly recommend it.

yup one of the best
If you’ve read the other 24 books in this series you will know how good this one is. However, the ‘two will get you twenty’ repetitiveness one could do without. The author is more creative and not repetitive in his storylines. Sometimes there are words used that are creative but not really the meaning that he insinuated. Again repetitive under the guise of being ‘creative’ in his use of words. Good book—read the series.

Dead Cold Strikes Another Hit
The Dead Cold series is a favorite of mine. I have enjoyed following Dehan and Stone in their adventures. This is an easy reading series, I look forward to each new book. Can’t wait for #26 in 2021. Banner’s storytelling has kept me happily occupied during a difficult year.

Banner kills it again
Corney lead in, I know. I couldn't resist. Blake Banner continues to impress with story plots that are creative and always have new twists. Stone and Dehan are like old friends whose stories never make you tire. This book had me concerned and intrigued from the first page and never let up. great job again Blake.

How in the h#$ll did he
This series is truly inspiring. The twists and turns, the subtle plot flips. The number of hints that you the reader must pick up on, but can't possibly catch.
There are in the early books some, "ham fisted" verbiage. But they become fewer as the stories continue, and the literary journey becomes a pleasant way to pass the time.

There are in the early books some, "ham fisted" verbiage. But they become fewer as the stories continue, and the literary journey becomes a pleasant way to pass the time.

Spectacular!!
I thought that I I've read all the books in this series, but I was wrong.
The plot, the development, the subsided menace, had me clinched until the early hours of the day following paths, persons involved and the final more or less expected murderer.

Whoop, he did it again
Ok, still has me up too late reading “just one more chapter”. This one was a little different in that Dehan didn’t have quite a large role but was..... ok can’t tell you, read it for yourself.

Disappointing after two dozen great reads.
This had a great plot and I enjoyed it the first time I read it by another author. Framed for murder? High profile victim family? Transferred prints? Animal blood? Faked shootout missing all valuables?
We really expected more, Blake.

The great storm
This is the same story retold - book 4 of omega series, for which I gave 5 star - wonderful mystery - though kind of outlier in omega series. But if you read either this or the other book - it is a very good book. Giving 4 star because of rehash.

Surprisingly different than previous offerings yet full of the twists and turns Banner uses to relate his tales.I still don't understand the reasoning that solved the case, but it ended well.

A very exciting read! This book was a good bit different from the cold case files! I saw a hot blooded husband and a wife accused of murder. It's easy to get into this story and hard to put it down!

The best one so far!!
You have got to love these two cops. This is a great story. I couldnt put it down. If you haven't enjoyed any of the Dead Cold books start with book one and read them in order.

disappointed - Banner stole a story from himself.
It’s a great story, but I think it was better in the “Lacklan Walker” version - “The Storm” was written/released by Banner three years earlier and is a nearly identical story, just different characters.

Nail Biting
Wow. Again another great book in this series. This one had me worried but I should have had more trust in Stone and Dehan. Excited for the next episode their lives.

I love the Dead Cold books-- I've read them twice-- The characters are engaging, and the storyline and crime twists, very New York. Please keep them coming, and you have a devoted fan.

Not like other books
Book is written well but too much out of character for Stone. Wasn't comfortable with beginning of book but then it got back to character.
