I picked this book solely for the front cover. That and the name. It seemed like some sort of adventure to do with dinosaurs so when it turned out to have a heavy romance storyline I wasn’t expecting that, especially with what the book is about: death row convicts on an island with dinosaurs. Was all of that right in the description/synopsis of the book? Yes. Did I bother reading it before I was mostly done with this book? Nope. What this book turned out to be was a sci-fi, action, adventure, mystery, romance. The best way I could describe it is if you mixed The Hunger Games and Jurassic Park. I ended up really enjoying this book; so much so that I immediately got the second one and started reading, which I’m notoriously bad at doing. I have a super bad habit of getting the first book in a series, reading it, getting really into it, getting the other books in the series, and not reading them. 😬 Except this one I had to know what happened next, especially with that cliffhanger at the end!! The romance seemed a bit cheesy to me, but in an endearing way. Romance is also not my usual genre so that could have also been it. One of the focuses of the book was the romance, but had a healthy balance with the other elements of the book. This definitely had a B movie vibe that I enjoyed, but I also really enjoy B movies. I could see how this book might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but despite this book not being what I expected I really enjoyed it from start to finish.

I would’ve rated this so much higher if there weren’t curse words.
It was such an interesting story and every twist and turn took me by surprised and I was super invested in the whole thing. The language was just super unfortunate to me!!

Really enjoyed the story and I loved the feel of jurassic park. But the physical attraction in the book was a bit much for me in this book.

I really liked the concept of an island where inmates on death row can choose to live out their lives on Extinction Island, an island filled with live terrifying dinosaurs. Although the danger might come from the humans on the island more than the animals.

4.5 stars--this is an electrifying read you won't be able to put down. Very creative! I'd love to see even more dino scenes in the next one (and maybe less romance, but that's just me). Well written and nicely fleshed out characters. Definitely interested to see what Oakley and friends get into in book 2! This book is easy to envision as a movie or TV series--the romance + the high octane action reminds me a lot of the movie Romancing the Stone.

Fast paced but problematic

Will I binge read the next book? Yes. The dinosaur and genetic manipulation plot is compelling enough for that. But the love triangle and focus on Oakley's overpowering "womanly allure" I could do without, even as it gets explained away by pheromones.

First of all, the cover on this book is phenomenal. It’s one of the most evocative, transfixing covers I’ve seen in a long time and, combined with a stellar title, will definitely get you to give it a second look. Flip it over to the back cover copy and you get a blurb that lets you know this is either going to be amazing in a way that B-movie camp always is, or it’s going to be bad. Unfortunately for Boekhoff, it’s the latter. It’s not that story wasn’t salvageable. The basic plot—a young girl discovers a shocking truth about herself and her past—could have been good. The problem begins with the setting. Extinction Island would have been a much better book without the extinction or the island.

The basic premise is this: Technology has allowed humanity to Jurassic Park dinosaurs back to life. After…some incidents…all dinosaurs are collected on the island of Costa Rica.* Also, due to a rise in crime, American legislators decide to make the island a place to exile death row inmates.** Oakley Laveau is a convicted murderer who has been sent to Extinction Island. Her crime? She murdered her best friend. She doesn’t she did it, but there’s a gap in her memory. She certainly never would have on purpose. But, in any case, she’s being sent to almost certain death on the island.*** Oakley will battle hardened criminals and genetically-modified dinosaurs all while trying to unravel the mystery of what happened that fateful night.

Oakley arrives on the island and is introduced to the outlaw society. There are various factions and gangs, but they’ve all learned to mostly coexist. There is one obvious Big Bad, but the real enemy is the dinosaurs. However, as Oakley struggles to survive, she meets someone who knows a little too much about her past. Someone who show Oakley who she truly is. This is the part of the story that’s interesting. Without offering spoilers, let me just say that the dinosaur prison island is just a distraction for the real story. But also, dinosaur prison island is what the whole book is supposed to be about. Boekhoff’s plot is at war with her setting. At one point, it gets so ridiculous that to advance the plot, Oakley needs to know something from her dad and conveniently her dad comes to the island to visit her. To. Visit. Her. On the dinosaur island. Where they put murderers.

It’s as if Boekhoff took two totally separate books and put them in a blender. By the end of Extinction Island, you begin to see how the dinosaur island setting ties into Oakley’s personal background, but it’s not a great connection. Extinction Island would have been a better book without Extinction Island and that’s unfortunate. The setting is so great for a gory, survivalist story. It’s not so great for a suspense/mystery with a perfunctory romance subplot. There are two good elements in this book, but they work against each other.

There’s also the problem of meeting expectations. This is an island of dinosaurs. Look at the T-Rex skull on the cover. But the majority of dinosaur interactions are with crocodile-like creatures, one nicknamed CamoCroc in particular. I know that crocodiles are basically dinosaurs, but they don’t count for purposes of this kind of fiction. When I want to read about a dinosaur fight, I want the kind I can’t find on any local Florida news station.

Boekhoff’s writing ability is fine. There’s nothing outstanding about it and the plot is rather generic and derivative. The romantic subplot is a big miss—too quickly developed and not at all in line with the setting. The setting shows potential, but is underutilized and underrealized. I really wanted to like this book, and, even though I didn’t, there’s still a part of me that wants to read the next book. The pieces of a good story were all here, they just weren’t arranged well. Future books may improve on that and shake it up. But just go read Michael Crichton instead.

*It is here geographically attentive readers will note that Costa Rica is not an island. However, it is an island in this book as the Panama Canal has been expanded and a Nicaraguan Canal has been built on the other side. This sort of takes some of the power away from the book’s awesome cover and unnecessarily means that the author has to handwave away how America just bought Costa Rica to use as a dinosaur-and-people prison. I guess it’s probably a nod to Jurassic Park, whose Isla Sorna was off the coast of Costa Rica, but it’s not a good literary decision for this story.

**It’s a massive misunderstanding of the US prison system to think that exiling all death row inmates would alleviate our problems with prison population. There are currently 53 people on death row in the United States. Our prison overpopulation is due to mandatory minimums for nonviolent drug offenses. I get that this is fiction, but so far removed from reality while yet trying to tie itself to reality, that it becomes unbelievable from the very beginning.

***Apparently a single murder with sketchy motive is enough for the young white girl to get the death penalty? This might the most fictional thing in the book.

An author friend recommended this book and I preordered it. Mainly because the preorder price was only .99. Hey, gotta be honest. So it showed up on my kindle and I opened it last night. Stayed up far too late reading it, but couldn’t stop! It was incredibly exciting even from the opening. The premise of sending death row prisoners to an island of genetically changed dinosaurs was just enough to pull me in. Danger is absolutely everywhere, especially when said prisoner is a woman. Wow! This is a super fast and exciting roller coaster ride. I just warn you: there is a huge cliffhanger because it’s part of a series. I cannot wait to see what happens in the next book. Awesome adventure.

Ok. I very, very, very rarely read anything sci-fi. BUT this novel has me chomping at the bit for the next book in the series. This was a good mix of sci-fi/dinosaurs/with a little bit of romance mixed in there. I read romance, and there wasn't enough for this to be classified as a romance novel. Definitely enjoyed all the characters from Kaleo to Raptor to Cody. The fact that the government has created this island to send convicts to, was a wild thing that I never would have thought of. If you're looking for something different that will catch your attention quickly, I recommend this book!

Fresh and interesting, I immensely enjoyed this suspenseful adventure. I barely escaped with my life from the dangerous convicts and Red Grizzly. However, I'm willing to return to the island in the next book in this series - Deception Island.

Trashy romance novel, every trip out from the base is the same. She gets in danger and gets saved by the hunk. It's also a christian book hiding under the guise of a thriller. Just be honest about it.

worse than anticipated

I really wanted to like this book. It had so much potential, but it basically takes the worst parts of popular franchises. The forced love triangle between a pastor and a Hawaiian bad boy? The main character several times being described as tiny and petite but curvy and the chosen one trope gets tiring. The book reads like a fan fiction written by a man because aside from her appearance, the female characters lack depth. Actually most of the characters did, but for being a main character I barely can describe Oakley’s personality, she’s so one dimensional. I might not even bother to read the remaining books.

I randomly found this on KU last night and stayed up late to read it. What a crazy story! If you like “The Most Dangerous Game,” “Jurassic Park,” and “Upgrade,” then you’ll enjoy this punchy 300 page story about a woman exiled to an island filled with murderers and dinosaurs, only to discover there might be something even more deadly: herself. I want to read the next two books (as this one ended on a cliffhanger!) and am curious to see where it all goes.

TW: no actual rape takes place on page but the FMC keeps finding herself in situations where it almost happens; she’s on an island with violent criminals so it makes sense but it also adds a thread of tension underneath everything else.

Honestly, I picked this book just because of the title and cover—I didn’t even read the description. Maybe that was my mistake. It really wasn’t my cup of tea. I may or may not continue with the next one.

Survival against dinosaurs mixed with romance just doesn’t work for me.

This is my first book by this author. I was intrigued when I first read about this book in a Facebook readers group. I was curious about the plot and as a Jurassic Park fan, I knew I wanted to read this. I listened to the audio version and the reading/voices was well done.

First off I have to say it was incredibly well written. I felt like I was walking inside a Jurassic movie and the visual imagery was captivating. The plot was super intriguing and kept me on the edge of my seat until the end of the book. The constant threat of danger made this a one day read for me. I couldn’t handle the suspense for longer than that. I will definitely read the following two books in this series because I want to know how Oakley’s story ends.

However, I feel I must be fair in my review that this book is a bit “edgy” for Christian fiction. There are some graphic scenes that some readers may find disturbing. And knowing that the setting of the story is an island for exiled murderers lends not a few moral dilemmas to the plot. As one might expect, most all of the sub-characters are on the island with a back story. And at times it feels like the back story excuses the fact that they murdered someone. Some wrestle with their past mistakes and others seem proud of their body count.

There are references to rape, and a handful of attempted rape scenes. There are comments made about men taking turns and sharing a woman. There are several lustful men who ogle the main character (even the good guys). I get it, it’s an island of murderous, depraved men, but the lustful thoughts and feelings (even between the main characters) was a bit heavy. There was one use each of *ell, *itch, and *ss. Again, I think the author was painting a picture of the sinful state of the islands human inhabitants, BUT I would’ve preferred not to hear those words. As one may expect, people are eaten by dinosaurs and die at the hands of other people on the island.

Without giving away spoilers, I will say there are a few revelations in the story that were quite unexpected. One in particular was very dark and in my opinion, quite disturbing. It almost made me completely lose empathy for Oakley but the author explains the reasons for why she did what she did. It’s up to each reader to decide where they stand on taking Oakleys side or not.

There is a subtle faith element in the story. Again I won’t give much details and spoil it for readers, but there are a few scenes where Oakley and another wrestle with deep thoughts and questions about faith, God, and if they can be redeemed. I will read the next two books in this series because I’m hopeful the faith part of the story will shine brightly through in the next books and Oakley will find her answers in Jesus.

“Extinction Island” is the first instalment in Janice Boekhoff’s “Jurassic Judgement” adventure sci-fi dystopian series. A brand-new take on both ‘genetic species- reincarnation’ and ‘legal punishment’ tropes. This is the kind of story that should be enjoyed without any spoilers; thus, I will only give the cliff-notes: the story take place in our own world, in which three premises are possible
1) Dinosaurs are been brought back to life, some even genetically enhanced
2) The prison system (specially dead-row) is overloaded
3) Costa Rica is factually been turn into an island by the expansion of the Panama Canal to the South and a freshly dug Nicaraguan Canal to the North

Oakley Laveau has been convicted of murder and sent to Extinction Island, where she meets Kaleo Palani and Cane LeBlanc, a convict and a volunteer, whose secret friendship shows a variety of nuances. The rest you have to find out by yourself, you’re welcome!

This is a fantastic story, thrilling, action-paced, original, well-written and highly entertaining, which could easily be turned into a movie (or TV series) script. Dinosaurs, who doesn’t love dinosaurs? Well, you might like to address the convicts about that 😉. The narrative is flawless, the world-building carefully done, highly visual, the characters tridimensional with unexpected facets. Boekhoff manages with ease to bring the reader along to fight both the dinosaurs and the system. Because the real evil doesn’t really inhabit the island; under the entertaining adventure layer, lies a much darker political truth, even if outsmarting Camocrocs and dodging Red Grizzly seems to be much more urgent at the moment. But make not mistake, this may be Survivor, but here the Dinos are running Tribal Council.

This is kind of a Jurassic Park meets X-men. Dinosaurs have been brought back from extinction, but they don’t play well with American citizens. The United States purchased Costa Rico, relocated the Costa Ricans, and dug canals to isolate the island and then relocated the dinosaurs to the island. To offset some of the costs of creating Extinction Island and to relieve the overburdened prison system, an option is given to death row inmates—immediate execution or to be exiled to Extinction Island.

Curious circumstances surround Oakley Laveau’s murder conviction. A man who might have been a witness to the murder for which Oakley has been convicted cannot be located. She has no memory of most of the evening of the murder. After receiving the death penalty, Oakley chooses to take her chances with the dinosaurs and convicted murderers on Extinction Island. The missing witness turn up on Extinction Island. Between the inhabitants of the island—convicts and the dinosaurs—danger lurks around every corner. Genetic manipulations make for some interesting abilities in dinosaurs and humans.

The story is fast paced and thrilling. The characters are well developed and complex as they struggle internally with killing or be killed. Oakley gets caught up in a love triangle on the island. The story offers many surprising twists and turns. The book ends on a cliff hanger that leads into the second book in the series.

I thoroughly enjoyed Extinction Island and recommend it.

Really good story

The United States has bought Costa Rica and populated it with dinosaurs. Almost the same kind as the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park. I say almost because some of them have been given a small adjustment to their DNA. But buying the island and evacuating all the people cost the U.S. a lot of money. To offset the cost, anyone given the death sentence now is given a choice, did immediately or take your chances on the island.
Oakley doesn't remember killing her best friend but she was found with the body. She was given a death sentence and finds herself facing the jungles of the island.
I read this book in a day. I couldn't put it down. It was very much different than Jurassic Park. This island is full of killers......Animals and humans.

If you are a Jurassic Park lover you will want to read this first book of new series. It is full of bad people that are examples of the evil that lies within all of us. There are also 2 Really Scary dinosaurs & one little cute guy that loves Oakley. I think this story goes further than Jurassic Park since there are DNA altered animals (& even people?). How can that be? I don't know. Hopefully, it's revealed in the future 2 books that are in this series. There are lots of twists & turns in this book, a huge surprise & a cliff-hanger at the end. I am very curious about where this series will go. Can't wait for #2. I received an ARC. This is my voluntary review.

This thrilling tale begins with the necessary background details to establish the storyline and then slowly eases the reader into full sensory overload as they come to grips with the terrifying new habitat that is Oakley Laveau's new reality. If Oakley is to survive, she need to learn to live in this tropical rainforest jungle dominated by male criminal gangs and genetically altered prehistoric reptiles. Kaleo and Cane, two residents of this strange new world, make a lasting impression and play a very important role in her life. The dino interaction is fast paced and bone-chilling. Amazing Read With Lots Of Interesting Developments!!!!!

Extinction Island is a exciting thriller and heart thumping beyond my imagination. Danger seemed to be waiting for all the great characters at every turn. Being imprisoned on the Island they were free to do what they wanted to but still imprisoned because nobody could be trusted. I read the book first before I looked at the Jurassic Judgement Junkie which is a must to see the! Janice makes you feel like you are walking in the jungle with the characters. I was given a copy of this book and while under no obligation to write a review, I couldn’t wait to encourage others to read this unique novel from a wildly creative author.

Creative, intriguing, cool story. I enjoyed this book a lot and couldn’t put it down. Although everyone seems a little bit “off”, you can still relate to the characters. The book has a good mix of action, adventure, science fiction, mystery, suspense and a little bit of romance all rolled into one exciting story. Everything in this story happens fast, so you’ve got to keep awake otherwise you’ll miss some of it. There are many interesting twists and turns but no-one can expect the ending. You will definitely want to read the next book as well.

Fans of the Hunger Games and Divergent will love this!! Oakley is convicted of a crime she didn’t commit – or did she? The punishment in lieu of death, is banishment to Extinction Island – home to the worst of the worst – and dinosaurs! Some of which are genetically modified to be smarter …. She begins to discover abilities she didn’t know she had. Now, how to survive? Lots of action! I received a free copy of this book, with no obligation.

This book was terrible. I thought it was going to be all action adventure and dinosaurs. It was romance and complete disbelief. I did not finish this. I wasn't invested in any of the characters (except maybe Cody, he was cute). The plot made no sense. The prison island with dinosaurs made no sense. Nothing made sense. Maybe I'll finish it another time, but I have better things I'd like to read for now.

Extinction Island

I really enjoyed this book. The characters are amazing and the dinos are awesome. Seems like a plot within a plot and it is hard to tell the good from the bad. So much going on, but it moves at a pretty good pace. Looking forward to next book in series. So glad to see another book without f this and if that. Kudos for language.

I am not a fan of books that don't properly conclude, as a "trick" to make you buy the next book in the series; HOWEVER, despite this cheap trick I found Extinction Island well worth reading. Here is a truly creative, fun book unlike anything I've ever experienced before. I hope Boekhoff writes many more like this (but with more fulfil!ing endings 😉)

What a thrilling read! The story grabbed my attention from the start and held it until I read the last word. The characters are strong, well described and realistic. Twists and turns, suspense and mystery fill the pages keeping you glued to them and sitting on the edge of your seat. A perfect read for fans of a great thrilling mystery. I received an advance copy of this book to leave a review.
